Expert Review, Pricing Analysis and Buying Guide

The 2022 ProMaster City wagon is expected to be a carry forward design and will be available in two trims, i.e., Wagon and Wagon SLT. The Wagon is the base trim which will be priced around $27,000, while the top-end trim will be available around a price tag of $29,000. The 2022 RAM ProMaster City Wagon rivals the likes of Ford Transit Connect Passenger Wagon and Mercedes-Benz Metris Passenger Van.

Features

The 2022 RAM ProMaster City Wagon will mostly be a carry-forward design and the same can be said about its trim lineup. The City Wagon will be available in two trims, which are Base and SLT. The Base is speculated to be around $27,000. It comes with 16-inch steel wheels, halogen headlamps, LED brake lights, air conditioning, cloth upholstery, 4-way manually adjustable driver and passenger seat, 5-inch touchscreen display, 4-speaker audio system, voice-activated Bluetooth, keyless entry and ignition, and 180-degree opening rear doors.

Apart from the standard features, some additional features can be opted for on the Base trim. The Lights and Wheels package includes 16-inch alloy wheels, fog lights, and more. Some stand-alone features include a navigation system, tow hitch, rear parking sensors, telematics tracking, and mapping system, etc. Moving up to the SLT trim will cost you around $29,000. In addition to the features standard on the Base trim, it gets upgraded cloth upholstery, leather-wrapped steering wheel, cruise control, power-adjustable heated side-view mirrors, upgraded window tint, etc.

The optional features available on the Base trim are also available on the SLT. Furthermore, it gets some exclusive features too. The popular Entertainment package will get you second-row power windows, heated front seats, and a 6-speaker audio system. Stand-alone features include premium vinyl seat upholstery and many more.

Which Trim should you buy?

Opting for the Base trim is wise if you’re looking for a no-nonsense wagon. Spend a little more (close to $2,000), and you’ll get the same features and utilities but more options to customize and enhance your cabin experience. Choosing for SLT will unlock some exclusive features and options which buyers might find appealing, hence it is the more desirable option.

Release Date

While there is no major update on the release of the 2022 Ram ProMaster City Wagon, we can expect it to be available around the end of the year.

Engine and Performance
7.0/10

Both the trims of the 2022 RAM ProMaster City Wagon will feature the same 2.4L Inline-4 as they did in 2021 MY. This engine is rated at 178 hp @ 6,400 RPM and 174 lb-ft @ 3,800 RPM of torque. The wagon is mated to a 9-speed automatic transmission, and the standard drivetrain is FWD. The engine is well-refined and delivers sufficient power to the wheels, resulting in a decent vehicle for commercial purposes.

2022 RAM Promaster City Wagon side view

The gearbox is quick and seamless with its shifts which makes the drivability much easier in cities. The ProMaster City Wagon has one of the best payload and towing capacities in the segment. It has a payload capacity of 1,883 pounds and a towing capacity of 2,000 pounds. While the compact passenger vans in the competition are not exactly built to win drag races, this one from RAM can do 0-60MPH in 8.6 seconds, and that itself is impressive enough.

The 2022 RAM ProMaster City Wagon’s tall and narrow nature makes it difficult to corner even at low speeds. Body roll is almost unavoidable. Apart from that, the steering is now equipped with an electric rack and pinion setup which makes the steering lighter. The response from the wheels is instant, and hence maneuvering this big vehicle has become fairly easy. Its strut-type front suspension and multi-link rear suspension perform best when pushed to the limit, in other words, when the Wagon is hauling heavy stuff. You can’t exactly expect a plush ride quality, but it does soak up some bumps.

The 2021 Mercedes-Benz Metris Passenger Van is the most powerful and the fastest in the segment, thanks to its turbocharged engine. It costs almost $10,000 more than the ProMaster City Wagon. One more interesting feature is that the Merc comes with an RWD drivetrain instead of an FWD. The Ford Transit Connect comes with a weak base engine that can do 0-60MPH in 10 seconds. Acceleration timings don't matter much here, but the payload and towing capacity do, and there, RAM does a little better than the Ford.

Fuel Economy
8.0/10

There’s only one powertrain option across both the trims, which is a 2.4L Inline-4 capable of pushing out 178 hp and 174 lb-ft of torque. The RAM ProMaster City Wagon is rated at 21 mpg for the cities and 28 mpg for the highways. This results in a combined fuel economy of 24 mpg. The mileage is decent considering its dimensions, but its rivals manage to outperform it quite easily. With a fuel tank capacity of 16.1 gallons, you’ll be able to roam around 386.4 miles (combined) in the RAM ProMaster City Wagon.

Among its rivals, only the 2021 Mercedes-Benz Metris has worse fuel economy, owing to its turbo motor. If you’re looking for an economical choice, then the best choice would be Transit Connect as it is the class leader in this category. It is rated at 26 mpg (combined). Compared to its rivals, only the Merc provides a bigger fuel tank. However, its worst-in-class fuel economy refrains from providing the best range in the segment. The best range is delivered by the Ford Transit Connect, which is 410.8 combined miles.

Interior
6.0/10

The 2022 RAM ProMaster City Wagon offers a comfortable and practical interior. However, do not expect it to be as plush and contemporary as the RAM trucks. It does not offer leather upholstery or power-adjustable seats, but for what it does offer, it is acceptable. It can accommodate up to five passengers. RAM also offers the option to remove the rear seats in order to maximize the cargo volume. The dashboard layout features a monotone black design with modern touches. The knobs and buttons are placed high on the dashboard right beside the competent infotainment screen. The layout is low, which in return allows the driver to have excellent exterior visibility.

2022 RAM Promaster City Wagon dashboard

The seats are cloth upholstered. The front seats are 4-way manual adjustable and have ample space in terms of headroom and legroom. The rear seats lack a bit of legroom but are still spacious and comfortable. Features like upgraded cloth upholstery, leather-wrapped steering wheel are reserved only for the SLT trim. On the other hand, manual air conditioning is standard on both trims. While RAM only offers seating for 5, the rivals Ford and Mercedes come with a seating capacity of 6 and 7, respectively.

The rivals like Transit Connect and Mercedes-Benz Metris offer more seats, but it takes a toll on cargo capacity. The RAM ProMaster City Wagon offers only five seats as standard but has the most cargo volume behind its rear seats. Without the third row, the Metris has the best cargo space, thanks to its large wheelbase. However, RAM and Ford offer better headroom when compared to Mercedes. Standout interior features include:

  • Cloth upholstery
  • 4-way manual adjustable front seats
  • Leather-wrapped steering wheel (SLT)
  • Heated front seats (optional only on the SLT)
  • 60/40 split-folding rear seats
  • Premium vinyl seat upholstery (SLT)

What’s there to keep you entertained?

The 2022 RAM ProMaster City Wagon will feature a 5.0-inch touchscreen display powered by RAM’s Uconnect system. The screen is pretty small, and its touch responses are just about acceptable. However, the system is easy to use, and browsing through its functions doesn’t take much time. It is paired with a 4-speaker audio system which offers decent sound quality. An optional 6-speaker audio system is available only on the SLT trim. Other than that, both trims come with voice-activated Bluetooth, USB ports, and satellite radio as standard. Standout infotainment features include:

  • 5-inch touchscreen central display
  • Four-speaker audio system
  • Navigation system (optional)
  • Bluetooth with voice controls
  • Telematics tracking and mapping system (optional)
  • 2 12V DC power outlets in the front 1 12V rear power outlet
Exterior
2.0/10

The exterior design of the 2022 RAM ProMaster City Wagon is expected to be the same as the current production model. Well, it’s not much of a looker, is it? Its awkward-looking styling is one of its letdowns. The front fascia consists of a small grille with RAM lettering. It is followed by halogen headlamps. The rear bumper is simplistic in design and is surrounded by fog light housing on both sides. An outward-contouring small hood completes its subtle not-so-special frontal look.

2022 RAM Promaster City Wagon

Viewing the ProMaster City from the side will give you an idea of its boxy wagon-like body structure. It literally has no aerodynamics, body lines, or curves. However, its straight roofline translates into more interior space. It sits on 16-inch wheels with a ground clearance of 5.1 inches. It also features body-colored heated manual-folding side-view mirrors and black body side moldings. The rear end is a basic upright-themed body style. It is practically designed in order to load your cargo with ease. The doors are 180-degree openings that are fitted with a huge rear glass. The LED taillights are narrow and long and fit barely right next to the doors.

The 2022 RAM ProMaster City Wagon has the shortest wheelbase among its rivals. It has a 112.4-inch wheelbase, while the Mercedes-Benz Metris has the longest wheelbase of 126 inches. Not just that, the Metris leads the segment in terms of external dimensions with an exception of having the lowest ground clearance of 3.8 inches. It is also almost 800 pounds heavier than the ProMaster City. Standout exterior features include:

  • Aero-composite halogen headlamps
  • 180-degree opening rear doors
  • 16-inch alloy wheels
  • Fog Lights
  • Black bodyside moldings
Safety
6.0/10

The 2022 RAM ProMaster City Wagon hasn’t been tested by either NHSTA or the IIHS, and the same is the case with the current 2021 model. Hence, it is difficult to put its crashworthiness in terms of scores. However, RAM has made sure to equip the ProMaster City Wagon fairly to ensure the passengers’ safety. When compared to its rivals, there are some important safety features that are unavailable on the ProMaster City Wagon. Standout safety features include:

  • Electronic Stability Control (ESC) And Roll Stability Control
  • ABS And Driveline Traction Control
  • Side Impact Beams
  • Dual Stage Driver And Passenger Seat-Mounted Side Airbags
  • Tire pressure monitoring system
  • Cruise control
  • Back-up camera

2022 RAM ProMaster City Wagon vs 2022 Ford Transit Connect Passenger Wagon

Ford Transit Connect is the 2022 RAM ProMaster City Wagon’s fellow American rival. This Ford is powered by a smaller engine, but it is the most fuel-efficient wagon in the segment. The RAM, however, is more capable in terms of payload and towing capacity. Ford offers the Transit Connect in three rows with an occupancy of six. Opting for lesser seats will increase the cargo volume by a significant number which will be much more than the RAM. The Transit Connect is priced slightly higher than the RAM, but it proves to be a better all-around performer.

022 Ford Transit Connect Passenger Wagon

2022 RAM ProMaster City Wagon vs 2021 Mercedes-Benz Metris Passenger Van

The Mercedes-Benz Metris is by far the best wagon in the segment. It outperforms the 2022 RAM ProMaster City Wagon in almost every aspect. It looks better, it is powered by a more powerful engine, has a better payload and towing capacities, and it also offers better interior space and quality. The fuel economy and price point are where Metris falls behind. It has the worst fuel economy in the segment and is priced at almost $10,000 premium than the RAM. If you have loads of money to spend and can overlook its bad fuel economy, then Metris is the best choice in the segment.

2021 Mercedes-Benz Metris Passenger Van

Final Verdict

The 2022 RAM ProMaster City Wagon is overall a practical and affordable passenger van. It is expected to be the same as the 2021 MY. With good payload and towing capacity and a decent fuel economy, the ProMaster City is a good value for your money. However, there are better vans in this segment, especially the Ford Transit Connect and the most expensive of them all, the Mercedes-Benz Metris. The ProMaster City Wagon finds a subtle balance between a utility vehicle and a living passenger van, hence it wouldn’t be a bad choice after all in the segment.
