2019 RAM Promaster Window Van Complete In-depth Review & Buying Guide

Shivendra Garg's image

What happens when one of the leading truck manufacturers of the country decides to make a passenger van? The answer is this, the 2019 Ram ProMaster Window Van. Unlike most of the manufacturers, RAM has resorted to a pretty dull looking boxy-shaped van, however, everything changes once you step inside it. Not the most exquisite, but the Promaster Window Van doesn't miss out on any of the necessary quirks that you'd look for in the segment.

Expert Review

Under the hood of the ProMaster lies a V6 motor, no surprises there. However, that V6 is good enough only for 280 horses and 260 lb.-ft. of torque. That said, this ProMaster Window Van might just be the least aggressive vehicle to bear the RAM badge they ever made.

This 2019 ProMaster Window Van lineup is now more versatile than ever. It aims to best the likes of the Nissan NV or the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter. At a price tag of about $37,000, it might just be able to. However, there are certain factors that are not very much in favor of this RAM. Let's pitch it against some better-established vehicles in the segment and see how does it fare against them.

2019 RAM Promaster Window Van Features

The 2019 Ram ProMaster Window Van is available in two versions, namely the 2500 High Roof and the 3500 High Roof. Both versions have the same standard features. In fact, both have the same engine option too.

The 2500 High Roof has a 236-inch long body. It also offers enough room so that adults can comfortably stand in the van. Hence the name High Roof. It is adequately equipped with features.

The 3500 High Roof is the elder sibling of the Window Van family. Standard features remain the same as in the 2500 High Roof. The only noticeable difference that remains is that the 3500 High Roof gets has an optional extended 250-inch body over the standard 236-inch body.

Both the variants sport a hefty 3.6-liter V6 engine that produces 280 horsepower and 260 lb.-ft. torque. Also standard on both versions is a six-speed automatic transmission which sends power to the front wheels.

Besides the features that are standard on the 2500 and the 3500 Window Van, there are several additional options available too. They include alloy wheels, foglights, daytime running lights, a driver-side sliding door, windows for the side and rear doors, power-folding and heated sideview mirrors, rear parking sensors, cruise control, cargo partition, heated seats, adjustable lumbar support, leather-wrapped steering wheel, paneled interior, satellite radio and navigation system.

We Recommend:

Both the ProMaster 2500 window Van and the ProMaster 3500 Window Van have the exact same features. So the only deciding factor that remains is the expectation you have from your van. In that case, the 3500 ProMaster Window Van is the more logical choice. It gets an extended-length body. So it can accommodate more people and their belongings.

2019 RAM Promaster Window Van Engine and Performance

The 3.6-liter V6 is the only engine available. It’s refined and quiet, and the transmission shifts smoothly.- Edmunds

Engine and Transmission

Both the ProMaster 2500 and the Promaster 3500 Window Vans derive power from the same 3.6-liter V6 engine. The engine makes 280 horsepower and 260 lb.-ft. torque. It might not seem like a lot, but the other vans in this lineup are all underpowered than this Ram despite having bigger 3.7-liter or 4.3-liter engines.

The engine rotates the front two wheels of both the 2500 and the 3500 ProMaster Window Vans with the help of a six-speed automatic gearbox. The shifts on this automatic transmission are quite refined and feel very smooth. As a result, the ProMaster Window Vans feel pretty easy to drive.

Acceleration

Any official data as to how quickly the ProMaster Window Vans manage to accelerate is not present. It is so because these vans are not purpose built to race. They serve entirely different roles.

Considering the fact that the Window Vans are powered by V6 engines, it’s without a doubt that they are powerful. But it’s the way that power is delivered that separates them from the naturally quick V6 engines.

Peak power is delivered at relatively higher revs to maximize towing efficiency. Hence, these vans lack that instant pick-up despite being powerful.

Braking

The standard ventilated disc brakes at all four wheels of the ProMaster Window Van provide ample stopping power. Although how quickly the vans manage to stop under emergency braking is anybody’s guess. What matters is the fact that the brakes work well even when the vans are completely loaded and there’s no fading response even after repeated hard braking.

Ride and Handling

The ride and handling of the ProMaster Window Vans clearly isn’t something to gloat over. Both the 2500 and 3500 Window Vans are still equipped with the pretty dated 2-stage multi-leaf spring suspensions.

Clearly, the Ram ProMaster Window Van was not built for a day on the racetrack, but that doesn’t mean that comfort was the central idea behind it either. There’s a severe lack of damping on the suspensions too. So even the tiniest of bumps are felt throughout the cabin.

The amount of body roll is more than terrifying. Try cornering this van and you might just feel it tipping over. Ram obviously needs a more modern approach towards the ProMaters’ driving dynamics.

2019 RAM Promaster Window Van Fuel Economy

None of the vans in this lineup are EPA rated for their fuel economy. As a result, any official information regarding it is not present.

2019 RAM Promaster Window Van Interior

Utilitarian vans are seldom known for their comfort, but the ProMaster is fairly easy to get in and out of.- Edmunds

Seating and Comfort

The Ram ProMaster 2500 and 3500 Window Vans are equipped only with front seats. They are adequately comfortable and offer sufficient support. In fact, there’s also an option of suspension seats to add that extra bit of comfort for the driver.

As for the row behind the front seats, the space has been left empty so that the owners can customize it according to their wishful thinking. However, there is no option of getting the rear seats, in case you want them, from the factory. This implies that owners will have to get them installed through third-party upfitters.

Cargo Volume

The 2019 Ram ProMaster Window Van is more useful than most other vans. There are more than one ways to utilise the missing rear seats. It can double up as a great area for cargo space. At 420 cubic feet of cargo volume, the ProMaster is the most competitive of all vans in this lineup.

Dimensions and Weight

Even though the ProMaster Window Van is the longest in this lineup of vans and offers the most cargo space, it is not the heaviest. Considering how unwieldy this Ram can be, it’s a bit of a relief that it doesn’t weigh as much.

Design and Styling

The 2019 Ram ProMaster Window Vans are nearly not as aggressively styled as one might expect when they think Ram. This Ram looks rather utilitarian with its generic Ram style front grille.

The flat front bumper of the ProMaster offers great visibility. The overall wedge shaped and boxy design optimizes internal storage space.

2019 RAM Promaster Window Van Safety

The not so long list of safety features on the ProMaster Window Van includes:

  • Electronic stability control
  • ABS
  • Traction control
  • Side impact beams
  • Airbags
  • Tyre pressure monitor
  • Back-up camera

2019 RAM Promaster Window Van Competition

2019 Ram ProMaster Window Van vs. Nissan NV

It might not be fair to rank the ProMaster against the Nissan NV. The Nissan NV is the clear winner in this comparison. It is cheaper, lot more better looking and also more practical. The Ram ProMaster on the other hand, even with its restyled front grille, looks ancient. It quite frankly is. The equipment is not quite as advanced. Plus the fact that the ProMaster is only equipped with front row seats and there’s no way you can get seats in the back fitted at the factory is an even bigger let down.

2019 Ram ProMaster Window Van vs. Mercedes-Benz Sprinter

Noone buys a van precisely for luxury. What matters more is how practical the van is. Sadly for Ram, the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter outranks the ProMaster Window Van by far in both aspects. Also, the Sprinter does not cost a fortune. In fact, it is just marginally more expensive than the Ram. Considering other factors, the Sprinter might actually be cheaper to own.

2019 RAM Promaster Window Van Final Verdict

Ram maybe one of the finest pickup truck manufacturers, but is just not able to cut it with their van, the ProMaster Window Van. Yes, it is spacious and offers great cargo space, and that’s what vans are meant for. But the other manufacturers offer much more modern and well equipped overall packages. The ProMaster Window Van feels a generation older. The 280 hp engine is the most powerful despite being the smallest, but the van business has hardly anything to do with that. Probably Ram needs to put in a lot more thought into making this van a better investment than it is now.
