Overview

Not everyone is familiar with the Smart ForTwo cars. However, whosoever are, testify to the fact that the ride is indeed one of the smartest, yet lesser-known 2-seaters. 2017 Smart Fortwo Convertible is the best incarnation of the lineup so far. Though the ride isn't a practical solution, as it lacks the back seats, it is a powerful option to stand out from the herd.

A tiny 0.9-liter 3-cylinder engine powers the 2017 Smart Fortwo. The engine is rated for generating 89 horsepower along with 100 lb.-ft. of torque. 2017 Smart Fortwo Convertible boasts a 5-speed manual transmission mode, which is a standard to the segment the ride belongs.

In the segment, 2017 Smart Fortwo Convertible receives competition from Fiat 500 C Pop, Mazda MX-5, and Mini Cooper. Rivals to the Smart Fortwo Convertible are better performers. However, the ride offers a remarkable combined fuel economy and a class-leading storage capacity along with an innovative infotainment screen and excellent maneuverability.

Engine

5.5/10

"Being tiny and lightweight affords some intrinsic fun, including a higher perception of speed and the tightest turning radius for a current production car (22.8 feet). Despite the improvements made, the Fortwo ultimately misses its mark of being a great car for the city"-Edmunds

Engine and Transmission

2017 Smart Fortwo Convertible flaunts a 0.9L 3-cylinder engine, coupled with a 5-speed manual transmission mode. The engine produces 89 horsepower, least in the competition, in addition to 100 lb.-ft. of torque. Evidently, the ride isn't a strong performer. Mazda MX-5 Miata Sport offers the most engine power of 155hp in the segment.

Mini Cooper Convertible offers the most torque of 162 lb.-ft. of torque in the league. Like the Smart ForTwo Coupe, Fiat 500 C Pop Convertible also supports a 5-speed manual transmission mode. Both Mazda MX-5 and Mini Cooper Convertible rely on a 6-speed manual transmission mode for gear-shifting.

Acceleration

2017 Smart Fortwo Convertible has a slothful acceleration. The ride takes 10.1 seconds for accelerating to 60 MPH. At least, this is faster than the 10.5 seconds required by the Fiat 500 C Pop Convertible.

Mini Cooper Convertible reaches 60 MPH in 8.3 seconds. However, it is the 2017 Mazda MX-5 Miata Sport that bests all class rivals with a requirement of only 5.6 seconds.

Ride and Handling

Obviously, 2017 Smart Fortwo Convertible is not meant for highways. The ride has an initial lethargic acceleration, which slows down even further with gear succession. Nonetheless, the ride is an excellent ride to park. Thanks to its short turning radius, the ride can be squeezed into the tightest parking spots.

2017 Smart Fortwo Convertible boasts a direct and responsive steering. Surprisingly, it is stable at higher speeds. Narrow track and skinny tires delimit the handling capabilities of the 2017 Smart Fortwo Convertible. Thus, the car isn\u2019t the one that can easily dangle and drape around turns. Unlike the gas model, the EV variant offers somewhat better drivability.

Braking

The 2017 incarnation of the Smart Fortwo Convertible boasts a bigger 11-inch brakes in the front. In the rear, the ride features a smaller 8-inch brake. In fact, it is the smallest brake rotors among the competition. 2017 Smart Fortwo Convertible has an ample braking system that is responsive too. It is far better than the subpar braking system of the Mini Cooper Convertible.

Both Mazda MX-5 Miata Sport and Fiat 500 C Pop Convertible have superb braking power. Mazda MX-5 requires only 109 feet for coming to a complete halt. Fiat 500 C Pop Convertible offers an even shorter stopping distance of 107 feet.

Fuel Economy

9.3/10

2017 Smart Fortwo Convertible flushes out its rivals in terms of combined fuel economy. The 2-seater offers 31 and 38 mpg in cities and highways, respectively. The ride delivers an impressive combined fuel economy of 34 mpg. The second in line is the Mini Cooper Convertible with a combined fuel economy of 32 mpg.

MPG (highway) 34 38 33 37

Like the 2017 Smart ForTwo Convertible, Fiat 500 C Pop Convertible also delivers 38 mpg on highways. However, it offers a less combined fuel economy of 31 mpg. 2017 Mazda MX-5 Miata Sport offers the least-in-league combined fuel economy of 29 mpg.

Interior

5.5/10

"Expert craftsmanship and exquisite materials are on full display. Every surface is impeccable and difficult to surpass with any budget. Rear-seat accommodations could be a bit claustrophobic with the top up, but the rear-hinged doors ensure easy access"- Edmunds

Seating and Comfort

2017 Smart Fortwo Convertible is able to accommodate 2 persons. The ride offers ample headroom and legroom for accommodating the passenger and the driver. Another ride in the competition that offers a seating for 2 only is the 2017 Mazda MX-5. The Smart Fortwo seating is comfortable and cozy.

Competition

Fiat 500 C Pop Convertible vs Smart ForTwo

A 1.4L 4-cylinder engine produces 101 horsepower and 98 lb.-ft. of torque in the Fiat 500 C Pop Convertible. The ride's initial price-tag of $16,490 is the lowest in the competition. Like the 2017 Smart Fortwo Convertible, Fiat 500 C Pop boasts a 5-speed manual transmission mode.

The performance is a bummer with the Fiat 500 C Pop Convertible. Its 0-60 MPH acceleration is even slower than the 2017 Smart Fortwo Convertible. C Pop Convertible takes 10.5 seconds for shooting to 60 MPH. The ride, however, has the best stopping distance of 107 feet in the league.

Mazda MX-5 Miata Sport vs Smart ForTwo

The 2-seater Mazda MX-5 Miata Sport boasts the best performance among its class rivals. The ride accelerates to 60 MPH in just 5.6 seconds and covers a quarter-mile in 14.5 seconds. MX-5 supports a 2.0L I4 engine, rated for 155 hp of power and 148 lb.-ft. of torque.

For gear-shifting, Mazda MX-5 Miata relies on a 6-speed manual transmission mode. The ride has an excellent stopping distance requirement of a mere 109 feet. Mazda MX-5 offers the best-in-league front legroom of 43.1 inches. However, it has the least-in-league mileage of 29 mpg.

Mini Cooper Convertible vs Smart ForTwo

Among its class rivals, Mini Cooper Convertible has the most opening bid of $25,950. The ride flaunts a 1.5L turbocharged Twin Power engine, capable of producing an ample 134 horsepower. It generates the best-in-league torque of 162 lb.-ft., nonetheless.

Mini Cooper Convertible accelerates to 60 MPH in 8.3 seconds and supports a 6-speed manual transmission mode. The ride is bulkiest in the competition with a total curb weight of 2855 lbs. It has the lowest braking power in the competition but offers a decent mileage of 32 mpg.

Final Verdict

2017 Smart Fortwo Convertible is probably the cheapest convertible out there. Meant for cities, the ride offers excellent maneuverability and a number of great features. On the flip side, you\u2019re stuck with a ride that can carry only 2 people around. Moreover, the ride isn't meant to drive, in any case, other than in city road conditions.

Nonetheless, the 2017 Smart Fortwo Convertible is a lucrative convertible if you like to drive all alone. Furthermore, its use of the smartphone as an infotainment screen is remarkable. Probably the biggest advantage of the 2017 Smart Fortwo Convertible is its super-inexpensive price-tag.
