Detailed Review

The Smart Fortwo is a compact car conceived in the late 1990s. It featured tiny dimensions and a peppy engine in an order to emulate other compact cars like the Mini and Fiat 500. Cut to 2017, the Smart Fortwo is now in its third generation and carries a much developed overall profile.

Although a lot of thought has gone into the development of the 2017 Smart Fortwo to make it more appealing to masses but it still sticks to the DNA of the original Fortwo. The exterior of the car has now evolved into a much better and rounded product.

The Smart Fortwo offers the perfect solution for people seeking a car to escape through the city traffic. Due to its minuscule size, the car can zip around in traffic without much trouble. But, it is also a niche product because the small size also equates to impracticality.

2017 Smart ForTwo Coupe Engine

6.1/10

“Tracing an estimated 10.5-second 0-60 mph time with the automatic, the 2017 Smart ForTwo is anything but quick, but compared to the previous generations of the Smart ForTwo, it’s nearly blazing—a factor owing to the 89 horses and 100 lb-ft of torque on tap from the turbocharged 898-cc three-cylinder.” – Motortrend

Engine and Transmission

The Smart Fortwo features a 0.9L 3 cylinder engine mated to a 5 speed manual as standard. The engine produces a healthy 89 hp which is enough to propel the car through city traffic efficiently.

In comparison with rivals, the Fortwo is the least powered car but not the least priced in the segment. The most expensive and the most powerful is the Honda Fit at almost $16k and 130 hp.

Acceleration

The Smart Fortwo is a strict city car so swift acceleration is not exactly what the makers had in mind while developing the vehicle. However, the car still manages a decent 0-60 mph time of 10.1 seconds. The acceleration smooth and fuss-free.

Amongst rivals, the slowest car in the segment is the Chevy Spark at 10.7 seconds. The fastest car in the segment is the Honda FIt at 9.1 seconds.

Ride and Handling

The Smart Fortwo is nimble and agile at low speeds, especially while swerving through heavy traffic. Small potholes are handled efficiently but not exactly smoothly since the vibration easily seeps into the cabin.

Taking the car on long journeys is nearly impossible not only due to its limited range but also due to its underpowered nature. The car takes forever to reach highway speeds and feels too floaty after the high speed is achieved.

Braking

The Smart Fortwo features a set of 11-inch rotors in the front and a set of 8-inch rotors at the rear. These might sound a bit too small in size but they’re actually the biggest in the segment. Unfortunately, no official braking stats are available at the moment.

The Chevy Spark takes the least distance to stop from 60 mph at 128 feet. The Honda Fit on the other side takes the most distance to stop at 130 feet.

2017 Smart ForTwo Coupe Fuel Economy

Fuel economy is something that the Smart Fortwo is good at. The tiny dimensions and a small 0.9L 3 cylinder engine translates to a smart fuel efficiency. The Coupe churns out 33 MPG in city and 39 MPG on the highway, quite similar to what Chevy Spark offers.

Amongst rivals, all the cars in segment achieve almost similar fuel economy ranging from 32 mpg to 34 mpg.

2017 Smart ForTwo Coupe Interior

5.5/10

“Some cost-saving measures, such as the nonadjustable cupholders molded into the hard plastic center console, are laughably obvious. But there are some redeeming qualities to the Fortwo's interior, such as generous passenger leg- and headroom and a cabin design that feels modern and fun.”- Edmunds

Seats and Comfort

The Smart Fortwo is a coupe and offers comfortable seating for up to two passengers. The seats are nice and ergonomic considering the dimensions of the car. The legroom and shoulder room is limited but has greatly improved from the outgoing model.

Amongst rivals, the Honda Fit features the largest passenger volume at 95.7 ft.cube. The Fiat 500 supermini on the other hands offers the lowest passenger volume at 79.5 ft.cube.

Infotainment System

There is actually no screen on the inside of the Smart Fortwo. Instead, there is a free Cross Connect app that turns your phone into an audio and navigation controller is an inventive way to integrate touchscreen controls with a very basic radio setup.

Interior Features

Some key safety features of the Smart Fortwo are

  • Rotary knobs for volume
  • Slot for fitting cell phone
  • Multifunction steering wheel

Cargo Capacity

Cargo capacity and other utilitarian jobs are simply out of bounds of the Smart Fortwo. The car itself is tiny and offers limited space for its occupants let alone any form of luggage. However, no official boot stats are available at the moment,

The Honda Fit has the biggest boot in the segment at 16.6 cube feet. The much smaller Fiat 500 has the smallest boot in the segment at 9.5 cube feet.

2017 Smart ForTwo Coupe Exterior

8.9/10

“The Fortwo model line, starting with the gas coupe in 2016, benefited from all-new styling that carries on to the 2017 Cabrio and ED coupe. The large, round headlights and happy-to-see-you smiling grille on such a short car give the Fortwo the look of an enthusiastic puppy.”- Kelley Blue Book

Dimension and Weight

The Smart Fortwo is a small car even by supermini standards. The front end features a boxy design with similar looking headlights. The boxy design philosophy continues at the rear with curvy corners and tail lamps. However, no official dimension figures are available at the moment

Amongst rivals, the Honda Fit is the heaviest car in the segment at 2513 lbs while the Chevy Spark is the lightest car in the segment at 2246 lbs.

2017 Smart ForTwo Coupe Competition

Smart Fortwo Coupe VS Fiat 500

The Fiat 500 is an iconic car that enjoys a legendary status all over the world. It was one of the original subcompact cars and features a small, cute and timeless design. The car is a breeze to drive and very comfortable indeed. The boot and other utilitarian factors are compromised no the point of complete impracticability.

Smart Fortwo Coupe VS Chevrolet Spark

The Chevy Spark is one of the better selling products from the GM motors stable and is also a kind of icon. The car has featured in multiple Hollywood movies which gives it a special status. The car itself is peppy and fun to drive while being practical with a decent sized boot. The rear space is little compromised but overall, it is one of the better hatchbacks in the segment at present.

Smart Fortwo Coupe VS Honda Fit

Honda Fit, which has also reached its third generation is a car that the automakers sells worldwide with more than 5 million units sold already. The car features a beautiful interior with soft-touch materials and well-paced utilitarian pockets here and there. The engine itself is refined and loves to rev all the way to its redline.

2017 Smart ForTwo Coupe Final Verdict

The Smart Fortwo is designed for a small niche segment where it comfortable sits amongst very few natural rivals. It offers a solution to a problem that has been growing and pestering city dwellers since forever. However, in the name of small dimensions, it takes away a lot of the things that make a car decent to own. If you are in the market particularly for a small subcompact, consider the Smart Fortwo. Otherwise, there are much better options for the same price and even lower.
