The wait is over; the brand-new 2022 Subaru BRZ is right here. It has been completely re-engineered and revamped to get you better acceleration, horsepower, and torque. Moreover, it preserves its great handling and a rear-wheel drivetrain, and imperatively so. The car is made for true revheads; it’s for those who want some thrill in their lives. With sporty engineering, the 2022 BRZ ensures Subaru belongs in the Kelley Blue Book’s 4-time Best Performance Brand.

The 2022 Subaru BRZ clearly gives more priority to the agility and affordability of the car as opposed to exclusive prices and horses. It’s a true sports car, so to say. The rear-wheel-drive Coupe, with its new revamp, is an exclusive entry among a lineup that offers Subaru’s symmetrical all-wheel drivetrain setup.

The speculated price of the 2022 Subaru BRZ is $31,000. It comes with a naturally aspirated flat-four generating 228 horses. It’s more powerful than ever, which is why most revheads’ complaints are duly over. The car has a lightweight and quite a low center of gravity, and decently comfy seating that is ideal in a sports car.

Expert Review, Pricing Analysis and Buying Guide

The interiors are redesigned and lots of modern techs are brought in. The tech holds the practicality of the car while the interiors hold the luxury. And when it comes to rivalry, the car stands adept in the face of the Toyota 86, the Mazda MX-5 Miata, and the Chevrolet Camaro.

2022 Subaru BRZ Features

According to the Subaru press release regarding the 2022 BRZ, for both manual and automatic gearboxes, there are two separate curb weight ratings, indicating two different variants for the model year 2022. The trims expected are called Limited and Premium and they differ by about 20 pounds each, so we believe there will be slight interior upgrades on offer between the trims, and the former variant won’t be as ‘stripped-down sports car’ as its other variant. Unfortunately, the press release is not very informative despite a few reads and often doesn’t depict the final specifications or features that will be on offer commercially. Nevertheless, the table below shows what we expect across the two trims for 2022.

We Recommend

As driving fanatics ourselves, we at CarHP can’t stress how much we recommend the Subaru BRZ for anyone like-minded. It manages to capture the essence of spirited driving while keeping the manual transmission alive in the best way possible. To pick between the two trims, we would like more information for a better decision, but for now, we would go with the Limited trim due to the upsized wheels and tires, which would perform slightly better on track. That being said, if you plan on sticking to public roads and would like to throw the rear around on the occasional twisty, you could either downsize the wheels or go with the Premium variant, which would make things slightly easier.

Price:

The Subaru BRZ is the closest to the people’s car as they can get in today’s industry, so we don’t expect any price hikes except for standard inflation. It’s estimated to start at $31,000

Release Date:

The 2022 Subaru BRZ is expected to be out by Fall 2021.

2022 Subaru BRZ Engine and Performance

With a new generation to begin with the year 2022, the Subaru BRZ’s engine is bigger and better than any of its previous year's models. The 2022 BRZ features an all-new naturally aspirated 2.4L flat-four-cylinder, also known as SUBARU BOXER engine producing 228 hp @ 7,000 RPM of power, which is 23-hp more than its previous year model and also an enhanced torque value of 184 lb-ft @ 3,700 RPM.

It’s the only engine that would come with the close-ratio 6-speed manual transmission along with the short-throw shifter. The shifter is, by the way, upgraded for the new model. Additionally, the refurbished 6-speed automatic transmission with downshift rev-matching and paddle shifters provide extra convenience. Coming to the drivetrain system, the Subaru keeps the sporty feel of its BRZ toned to the rear-wheel drivetrain.

Along with this, Subaru has claimed that the new Coupe offers a low center of gravity and a curb weight of only 2900 pounds. The weight is, in fact, distributed in equilibrium at the front and the back. Combo it up with a stiff structure and see how entertaining the car gets. The traction and stability system of the car gives you 5 distinct settings and if the driver needs more control over them, s/he can deactivate the system too.

The BRZ’s new bigger engine might be impressive enough with its upgraded performance attributes but not big enough to beat the Chevy Camaro’s 2.0L Inline-4 engine. However, in terms of torque numbers, the 2022 BRZ surely showed some impressive hike beating its cousin Toyota 86 as well as the MX-5 Miata.

2022 Subaru BRZ Fuel Economy

Neither EPA nor Subaru themselves has declared any distinct fuel economy for the 2022 BRZ Coupe. However, as per speculations, with the help of its 6-speed manual transmission unit, the BRZ can deliver 24 MPG in the city, 34 MPG on the highways, and 28 MPG as combined. These are certainly decent numbers for its particular segment.

Though the previous versions of BRZ have also been pretty good with its fuel economy, delivering decent numbers whether for MPG or even for a cruising range distance. The 2022 BRZ’s fuel tank capacity has also not been out yet, but the 2021 year model had a capacity of 13.2 gallons. And with the help of which it can be cruised for a combined range of 330 miles.

The above MPG data of the 2022 Subaru BRZ is just speculation in relation to its 6-speed manual transmission system. The exact numbers are yet to be revealed by Subaru as well. Till then, the Mazda is the one leading with its highest combined mileage of 29 MPG. Nevertheless, even after being a poor performer with its MPG figures, the Camaro has been granted a generous fuel tank capacity that helps it to cruise for a combined range of 456 miles.

2022 Subaru BRZ Interior

The 2022 Subaru BRZ doesn’t have a much-changed virtual interior layout. However, you get a lot of improvised and new hardware. Alcantara and aluminum have been used right to make the interiors of the Subaru BRZ a wonderful place to be in. The steering wheel, gear knob, and other touchpoints of the vehicle are all dipped in leather. The seats are made of both Alcantara and leather. The quality of the materials is supreme, much better than what its predecessors had. Basically, no comfort or practicality is sacrificed in the interiors.

When it comes to hardware, the 2022 Subaru BRZ comes with an all-new 7” driver’s display that showcases lots of information and sporty performance. The telemetry is the same as Nissan GT-R’s system or other supercars in the industry. These can display lots of important info like oil temperature, display lap-timers, and more. The 2022 BRZ also gets an upgraded infotainment system that utilizes the 8-inch unit found in most of the modern Subarus. It also offers you great connectivity options; much thanks to the Subaru Starlink.

The Subaru BRZ and Toyota 86 are soul sisters when it comes to interior dimensions. Both the coupe cars offer exactly the same interior space along with a cargo capacity of 6.9 cubic feet. On the other hand, while both MX-5 Miata and Camaro offer a two-seater passenger capacity only, they also offer better and more spacious first row as compared to BRZ and Toyota 86. And the Chevrolet Camaro also offers the best cargo capacity amongst the competition. Interior features that stand in the 2022 Subaru BRZ:

  • Driver focused interior design
  • 8-inch infotainment touch screen with Subaru Starlink
  • Customizable 7-inch digital driver’s display
  • Subaru EyeSight Driver Assist (automatic only)

2022 Subaru BRZ Exterior

The exterior of the 2022 Subaru BRZ is completely overhauled. It has a very different wide-mouthed front fascia and a rather tucked or let’s say tightened rear end. The 2022 Subaru BRZ is an inch long and half-an-inch short that allows for a sleeker yet rakish appearance.

It comes with great looks, so it would be accepted by everyone even at an extensive price. The rear end of the car, the muscular one, comes with a slick ducktail spoiler curve or the dual-outlet exhaust on the rear decklid. Multi-spoke wheels complement the set of side rocker panels leading up to the scalloped side ducts.

The BRZ’s older platform has been refurbished into a new version with respect to the dimensions. The wheelbase has been elongated by 0.2 inches. Subaru Global Platform for the BRZ helped with the great chassis of the Subaru. It applies the structural improvements that enhance the front lateral bending rigidity rating by 60% as compared to the old version.

The 2022 BRZ’s new exterior design makes it slightly longer, half an inch lower, and comparatively lighter than its previous year models. The more functional aerodynamics design of the car gives it a better edge of styling than most of the mentioned rivals. Besides, Subaru has kept the BRZ’s iconic look closer to their vintage sports car model. Exterior features of the 2022 Subaru BRZ:

  • Low center of gravity enables the quality handling it offers
  • Weight distribution and overall controlled curb weight
  • “Double Bubble” roofline as an ode to the racing cars of yesteryear

2022 Subaru BRZ Safety

Well, it's pretty obvious that the 2022 Subaru BRZ is yet to hit the roads officially. Until then, none of the trusted organizations such as NHTSA and IIHS have crash-tested the BRZ. The 2021 year model of the BRZ has also not been crash-tested by these organizations to date. However, Subaru has equipped the BRZ with an advanced and effective safety suite. It has provided the coupe with a long list of safety features along with noteworthy driving assistance features. The 2022 BRZ offers:

  • Adaptive Cruise Control
  • EyeSight Driver Assist Technology with automatic Pre-Collision Braking (Automatic variants only)
  • SUBARU STARLINK Safety and Security offer a wide range of services that can keep you and your car connected to help such as Automatic Collision Notification and Enhanced Roadside Assistance.

2022 Subaru BRZ Competition

2022 Subaru BRZ vs 2022 Toyota 86

Both the 2022 Subaru BRZ and the 2022 Toyota 86 are soul sisters. But the 2022 Subaru is clearly better in terms of performance figures with its new and bigger engine. Though both the cars have been developed by Toyota, somewhere BRZ has an edge over 86 for being more engaging and having fun driving mechanics. But Subaru BRZ is also comparatively pricier.

2022 Subaru BRZ vs 2021 Mazda MX-5 Miata

The 2022 Subaru BRZ has a better performance compared to the 2021 Mazda MX-5. The Mazda MX-5 Miata has better fuel economy compared to the BRZ. Though MX-5 Miata has a 2-seater passenger capacity only, it offers comparatively better seating space for its front-row passengers. On the other hand, the Subaru BRZ offers a 4-seater passenger capacity with a better cargo volume.

2022 Subaru BRZ vs 2021 Chevrolet Camaro

The BRZ’s updated engine might be powerful but still not powerful enough to beat the heat of a Chevy Camaro. However, in terms of fuel economy, the Subaru BRZ is way ahead of the Chevrolet Camaro but Camaro’s bigger fuel tank capacity does provide it an advantage over BRZ to be cruised for a combined range of 456 miles.

2022 Subaru BRZ Final Verdict

The 2022 Subaru BRZ may look like a minor overhaul, but believe us it’s not. The car has its wings spread out in every direction. Subaru has been delivering, with its BRZ, everything that the consumers desire. The new model is way too sharp and better than its previous version. And for the places that didn’t need any revamps, Subaru did smart work and didn’t apply any of its minds over there. Embracing all, the Subaru BRZ is one of the most admired lightweight sports coupes in the auto market of the US today.
