Subaru Crosstrek is a subcompact SUV launched at the 2011 Frankfurt motor show and it is in its second generation. It was produced by Subaru as a replacement for the Outback Sport in North America and the Impreza XV elsewhere. The Crosstrek is a slightly modified raised Impreza hatchback with a larger lift than the Outback Sport. The 2023 edition is expected to get some minor exterior styling changes and an additional new wilderness special edition package also has been confirmed by the company. The Wilderness edition has more advanced traction technology called the X mode, knobbier, stronger tires, and increased ground clearance The Crosstrek is already designed for travel through difficult, slick terrain, but a Wilderness special edition package would further its off-road prowess.

Expert Review, Pricing Analysis and Buying Guide

The 2023 edition is expected to come with the same 2.0 liter Boxer 4 cylinder engine on the base trim and will get the bigger 2.5-liter engine on the top trim. The price for the base trim starts from $23,645 and goes up to $29,495 for the top Limited trim. A hybrid version of the Crosstrek will also be available for a price of $36,845. It competes against the likes of the Kia Seltos, the Hyundai Kona, and the Honda HR-V. The Crostrek is the oldest running model in our comparison and let us find out how it fairs against the newer models

Features

The Subaru Crosstrek will be available in a total of 4 trims and a hybrid variant which we won't be covering in our comparison. The base trim MSRP will be $23,645 and will go up to an MSRP of $29,495 for the higher Limited trim. All the trims will be equipped with the boxer 4 engine but the higher trims get a slightly bigger 2.5L engine which produces comparatively more power than the lower level trims. Apart from this, there are a few other minor changes across each trim level with regards to exterior styling, Interior tech, mechanical features, and safety features.

The Base and Premium trim gets the option to upgrade the transmission to automatic Lineartronic CVT at an additional cost of $1,350. The special edition trim will be available only for the Premium trim. Another important point to note is that the special edition trim will be available only if you equip the Premium trim with automatic Lineartronic CVT. The Crosstrek also has a long list of accessories to choose from. Subaru has a section for accessories only for pet owners which has accessories like pet harnesses, collapsible kennels, etc. Apart from this, the following packages are available based on the choice of trim.

Optional Package

  • Power tilt/sliding moonroof
  • Blind Spot Detection/Rear Cross Traffic Alert
  • Keyless Access with Push-Button Start
  • Power Driver Seat

  • Power tilt/sliding moonroof

  • Harman Kardon® premium audio system

We Recommend

We would recommend the Premium trim add to it the automatic Lineartronic CVT and the special edition package both adding up to an additional $2,000 which will give you the best value for money proposition. Adding the special edition will dismiss your choice of color as it will be available only in desert khaki. Also if you feel the power is not enough on the premium trim you should upgrade to the next trim which is the Sports trim.

Release Date

The 2023 Subaru Crosstrek is available for booking on the company website and deliveries shouldn’t take much time.

Engine and Performance

The Subaru Crosstrek is equipped with a 2L boxer 4 engine and is the only car in our comparison which uses such an engine setup. The 2L boxer engine churns out a power of 152 horsepower and 145 lb-ft of torque. Meanwhile, the bigger 2.5L produces a total power of 182 horsepower and 176 lb-ft of torque without compromising fuel efficiency. AWD comes as standard across all trims with features like active torque vectoring which distributes power accordingly to each wheel ensuring better control on difficult terrain as standard. The 6-speed automatic gearbox performance is satisfactory according to us but opting for the 8-speed Lineartronic CVT would ensure much more accurate shifts ensuring a smoother ride. The Crosstrek is capable to pull 0-60 in 9 seconds and the quarter-mile mark in 16.9 seconds

In terms of our performance comparison, all cars except the Honda HRV gets 2.0L engine coupled with AWD drivetrain. Talking about the transmission the Hyundai Kona gets a normal 6-speed transmission whereas all other cars in the segment get the CVT transmission. The Subaru’s boxer engine produces the most power and torque a bit ahead of the competition but unfortunately, 0-60 acceleration and quarter-mile time take a hit on the Crosstrek. The 0-60 time is better on the Kia Seltos whereas the quarter mile time is best for the Honda HRV. The Kia Seltos also has the highest recorded top speed of 125 MPH.

2023 Subaru Crosstrek Ride and Handling

The standard 152-hp four-cylinder engine in the Crosstrek generates a lot of noise but doesn't provide much drive. Like many of its rivals, it takes an agonizingly long time to reach highway speed. However, the handling of the Crosstrek is pleasantly car-like because of the well-weighted steering and the smooth ride. Larger bumps are easily absorbed by the individual suspension because it is robust without being unpleasant. Although the Crosstrek tires have a fair amount of grip, we think it is a little lackluster in corners. The seating comfort is good but lacks the bolstering while driving offroad. Overall the ride and handling are above average.

2023 Subaru Crosstrek Braking Performance

The Crosstrek's high-performance braking system includes next-generation calipers, high-quality brake pads, and a short pedal stroke to provide a quick and sure response. Numerous important safety innovations, such as Electronic Brake-force Distribution, Brake Assist, and Brake Override, are programmed into the braking system of the Crosstrek. Hill Start Assist, another component of the braking system, avoids rollback when starting on steep inclines. The rotors on the Crosstrek are 11.6 inches in the front and 10.8 inches in the rear which enables a considerably shorter stopping distance compared to its segment. Altogether we are very much satisfied with the braking performance of the Subaru Crosstrek.

The Honda HRV has the bigger rotors among the competition followed by the Hyundai Kona. Kia Seltos gets the smallest rotors in the segment. We feel all cars in the segment have a good braking performance with a slight edge for the Subaru Crosstrek. The curb weight of 3188 lbs is the highest in our comparison for the Crosstrek but this hasn’t affected the braking performance of the Crosstrek.

Fuel Economy

With outstanding EPA fuel economy ratings, the Crosstrek is one of the most fuel-efficient subcompact crossover vehicles. The continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) and 2.0-liter engine of the Crosstrek may be sluggish, but they are also fuel-efficient, with an EPA rating of 28 MPG in the city and 33 MPG on the highway. With the manual transmission, the MPG reduces significantly to 22 and 29, respectively. 27 mpg in the city and 34 mpg on the highway are the ratings for the 2.5-liter engine and CVT, respectively. The combined MPGe for the hybrid variant is up to 90. The Crosstrek also has a considerably bigger fuel tank with a capacity of 16.6 gallons which translates to a longer range of 465 miles in the city, 548 miles on the highway, and 498 miles combined.

In our fuel efficiency comparison all cars have a similar EPA rating, The Kia Seltos, and Hyundai Kona returns the best fuel economy of 29 MPG in the city. When it comes to highways the Kia Seltos take the lead in fuel efficiency with 35 MPG. In the combined fuel efficiency department, the Crosstrek leads with a figure of 30 MPG. Crosstrek also gets the bigger fuel tank in the segment at 16.6 gallons, whereas all other models get a smaller 13.2 gallons. Due to the bigger fuel tank and better fuel efficiency, the Crosstrek has the longest range with a difference of close to 100 miles over other models.

Interior

The Crosstrek boasts a straightforward and sturdy-feeling interior that puts function over design, in classic Subaru fashion. In the less expensive models, its lack of flair is totally acceptable, but in the Limited model, which can cost more than $30,000 with options, it starts to feel a little dull. Although there are feeble attempts to add some color, such as orange stitching on the seats and faux-carbon fiber trim, the overall ambiance is still gloomy and dull. However, choosing lighter grey cloth or leather upholstery does make a small improvement. Both the front and back seats have plenty of space, and the Crosstrek has one of the roomiest cabins in its class. The back seat will be the only area that is slightly constrained but only for taller passengers. The Crosstrek has a cargo space of 20.8 cubic feet which can be further extended by folding the 60/40 foldable rear seats.

Being the older model among the competition the Interior feels really outdated and dull. In terms of the interior quality and tech features the competition is better and ahead of the Subaru Crosstrek. The front row space is comparatively better than the competition offering more legroom and good shoulder room. Coming to the third row the Honda HRV has the better interior dimensions. The Kia Seltos gets the most cargo space at 26.6 cubic feet.

Some of the key interior features available with the 2023 Subaru Crosstrek are:

  • Leather upholstery with orange stitching
  • Starlink safety and security services
  • Satellite and HD radio
  • Power driver seat with heating
  • Automatic climate control
  • 60/40 foldable rear seats

How intuitive is the 2023 Subaru Crosstrek’s infotainment system?

The Subaru StarLink infotainment system is well-organized, provides a wide range of connectivity options as standard, and is simple to use in daily driving, but it occasionally feels slow. The knobs and switches on the center console also give it a dated appearance. Standard features include a 6.5-inch touchscreen with smartphone integration for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, as well as Bluetooth and a USB port. With a larger 8.0-inch touchscreen that includes SiriusXM satellite radio and several additional support apps, the Limited and hybrid variants are the only ones that can have inbuilt navigation. Clearly, the infotainment system used by the competition is superior and convenient to use.

Some of the most notable infotainment features available with the 2023 Subaru Crosstrek are

  • Apple CarPlay & Android Auto
  • Integrated voice commands
  • Integrated window antenna
  • Steering wheel mounted controls
  • 4 Speaker audio system
Exterior

The Subaru Crosstrek is immediately recognizable as a Subaru. With a high ground clearance, hard plastic cladding, and unique body lines, it represents the brand's design language. Depending on the trim, the appearance differs a little. For instance, the brand-new 2023 Special Edition model sports chic dark grey metallic alloys and a special Desert Khaki paint job. The hybrid variant also sports distinctive features like rare Lagoon Blue Pearl paint, low-profile roof rails, and customized wheels. Regarding the exterior dimensions, the Crosstrek is considerably bigger in terms of length, width, and height. It also gets a better ground clearance of 8.7 inches giving it a taller stance.

In terms of exterior styling and design we would rank the Honda HRV at the top followed by the Hyundai Kona, the Kia Seltos, and lastly the Subaru Crosstrek. This is primarily because the design is in its second generation and feels dated compared to the competition but we wouldn’t criticize the practicality factor of the car. The Crosstrek with its higher ground clearance is definitely the better off-road capable crossover. Due to its bigger exterior dimensions, it also has a spacious interior. The longer wheelbase offers good stability in highway cruising but could be a letdown in city driving conditions.

Some standout exterior features include:

  • Automatic LED headlights
  • LED fog lights
  • Body-color mirrors with integrated turn signals
  • 17-inch alloy wheels
  • LED rear gate light
  • Black cladding all around
  • Roof rails with black finish
Safety

The NHTSA has rated the 2021 Crosstrek with an overall crash test rating of 5 stars. We expect it to continue over to the 2023 model year too as there are no major changes to the exterior. The individual crash test performance pertaining to the frontal impact test are 4 stars and the side impact crash test are rated at 5 stars. These results are quite impressive. The sturdy design language ensures maximum safety in the event of a crash.

Along with a strongly built structure and other safety features like the advanced airbag system in the front, curtain airbags with rollover sensors, seat-mounted front seat airbags, and driver knee airbags coming as standard Subaru hasn’t compromised on safety. It also gets additional safety features like brake override and assists, TPMS, rear vision camera, and vehicle dynamic control which improves the overall safety of the Crosstrek.

Other standout safety features include:

  • Pre-collision braking
  • Advanced adaptive cruise control
  • Lane keep assist
  • Lane departure and sway warning
  • Pre-collision throttle management
  • Blind-spot detection
  • Rear cross-traffic alert
  • Reverse automatic braking
  • Subaru Starlink Safety and security
Competition

2023 Subaru Crosstrek vs 2022 Kia Seltos

Both vehicles have excellent interiors, but the Subaru Crosstrek has a larger cabin. The Crosstrek, which has a higher ground clearance and a manual transmission available, outperforms the Kia Seltos in off-road conditions. With features like hill descent control and traction settings, Crosstrek's driving experience is better. It also gets an improved all-wheel-drive system and has better power and torque ratings. Additionally, even on lower trim levels, the Crosstrek gets a lot more safety features. The Kia Seltos, in contrast, triumphs thanks to its larger cargo area, more contemporary exterior style, and more attractive interior cabin. Additionally, the Kia Seltos has somewhat superior fuel efficiency on both the city and highway. Both models are similarly priced hence it will boil down to your personal preferences.

2023 Subaru Crosstrek vs 2022 Hyundai Kona

Due to its superior off-road capabilities and standard all-wheel drive, the 2023 Subaru Crosstrek will continue to be the superior crossover option. On the other hand, the Kona's latest turbocharged engines make it more exciting to drive. There is also an all-electric drivetrain option for the Kona. Both crossovers have a roomy, pleasant interior, but the Kona wins out for higher-quality materials and better interior design. With a score of 5 stars in every individual crash test, it also boasts the highest segment crash test rating, making it more structurally robust and occupant-safe. Additionally, compared to the Crosstrek, it boasts a better exterior design and appearance. The Hyundai Kona's base trim also ends up being the most affordable choice.

2023 Subaru Crosstrek vs 2022 Honda HRV

In our Crosstrek and the HRV comparison. The Crosstrek came out to be the better handler, offers superior off-road capability, and has a tonne of amenities. The HRV has shown to be a pleasant and practical choice, but it falls short when compared to the Crosstrek with regard to interior capacity. Due to its aerodynamic design, the Honda HR-V does have better 0-60 and quarter-mile times as well as better assistance functions. The HR-V earns points for both interior and exterior aesthetics. The Honda HRV should be a viable option, in our opinion, given its lower price compared to the Crosstrek.

Final Verdict

The Crosstrek is an interesting option to consider if practicality is what you are looking for but this practicality comes with a price in terms of interior design and exterior styling. When Subaru Crosstrek was first introduced in 2016 we were liking it but in the recent past, the competition has a better exterior design and features more tech and a futuristic interior design. The Crosstrek has one of the best in class power and torque figure, interior space, and is the better offroader in our comparison. It also has fuel efficiency and range almost at par or slightly better than the competition. The safety rating is also very good. If the question was asked in the previous year we would have recommended the Subaru Crosstrek but in 2023 we have our reservations that would be mostly related to the interior which could have been made more futuristic with better infotainment systems. The exterior styling also needs a redesign. If you are utmost importance is practicality and the styling and dated interior aren’t a problem. The Subaru Crosstrek is definitely the better option.
