2019 Subaru Crosstrek hybrid SUV Complete In-depth Review & Buying Guide

Anuron Deka's image

Anuron Deka Content Writer Updated on: November 14, 2019

Crossovers are the new fashion in the automotive world. Big SUVs are resculpted to be more compact and hatchbacks are beefed up to be more spacious. This trend has given rise to a new niche market, that of the hybrid crossover. Subaru was one of the many manufacturers who capitalized early on this trend. The Subaru Crosstrek caters to multiple needs, it's comfortable in the city traffic, rugged for rocky terrains, and practical to pack for long road trips. However, the lack of power makes the deal less attractive then it should.

The Plug-in Crosstrek comes with a price tag of $35,950 with a similar engine that employed by the gas-powered trims. A battery is paired with the engine to create a hybrid powertrain. This powertrain is backed by a CVT transmission to hammer out 152 horsepower and 145-pound-feet of torque. Though Subaru isn't the only brand to carter to the needs of hybrid SUV customers, cars like Mitsubishi Outlander, Hyundai Kona, and Kia Niro that are offered with their own hybrid versions give a tough fight to the Japanese SUV.

Subaru served notice to the rest of the world by the sheer idea of building a Hybrid All-wheel-drive SUV, things went they stuffed all the tricks and treats from the Subaru's warehouse. You have Subaru's eyesight suit which adds a set of advanced safety features including Forward Collision Warning, Automatic Braking, Lane Keep Assist and more.

We Recommend

The Hybrid Crosstrek is backed by a decent list of features so there is not much left to explore. To make it more intriguing you can add optional features like the Rockford Fosgate Audio system, All-weather Liners, Remote engine start and more.

2019 Subaru Crosstrek hybrid SUV Engine and Performance

6.9/10

The Crosstrek is abysmally slow for a modern vehicle. If you can get past that drawback, though, it offers reassuring steering and a lot of off-road ability. Handling and in-town drivability are acceptable, though rivals offer a more enjoyable driving experience the majority of the time”- Edmunds

Engine and Transmission

Though the Hybrid Crosstrek is backed with 152 horsepower and 145 pound-feet of torque the Crosstrek’s engine is sluggish and uninspiring. The hood hides a 2.0L Boxer-4 engine which is either mated to a CVT transmission. The engine doesn’t feel motivated at all and the throttle response is tuned to cover up the nebulous buzzing sound which plagued their yesteryear’s transmission, that’s an improvement.

This hybrid SUV might drive fine and accomplish its off-roading intentions but it’s awfully slow during the post 60 mpg period. Though that’s what you get from a crossover weighing over 3100 pounds so its all good.

Acceleration

The Hybrid’s initial acceleration is better than gas-powered Crosstrek but its still bad. The throttle takes its time to show any sign of life which fails to give it a boost while sprinting. However, compared to its rivals the subcompact body scores point against the bulky rivals. The Hybrid Crosstrek makes the 60 mpg test in 8.3 seconds and hits the quarter-mile light in16.5 seconds which is better than the competition.

Ride and handling

The engine is uninspiring and fails to make a good first impression but the story takes a positive turn from there. The driving dynamics largely resemble the Impreza which is a good thing. The steering has a central balance and enough road communication to correctly judge the SUV’s movements. Subaru has come a long way with the Crosstrek, its stiff suspension is now more comfort-driven and takes all the bumps with ease. Cornering is not that fun as the Crosstrek suffers from body roll. At last, you have Subaru’s signature X-mode to cover rocky terrains.

Braking

You can count on the Crosstrek’s brakes anytime, the pedal feels pretty maneuverable and adds a little softness without being light. The front brakes are rated at 11.6 inches and the rear at 11.2 inches. Being a subcompact crossover the Subaru Crosstrek is lighter than its competitors. This results in SUV’s stopping distance of 118 feet from the speed of 60 mph.

2019 Subaru Crosstrek hybrid SUV Fuel Economy

The amalgamation of hybrid motor and gas powertrain is pretty economical to use. It is all good when you have a hybrid SUV with a range of 480 miles and a self-charging battery while driving. The Crosstrek can go to the maximum length of 17 miles solely running on the battery’s might. If you are a big fan of plug and play then go ahead the Crosstrek will refill dry batteries in 5 hours with Level one charging.

2019 Subaru Crosstrek hybrid SUV Interior

6.0/10

The Crosstrek's controls are laid out well, and the car is easy to get in and out of. There's plenty of room in both the front and back seat. Thanks to the Crosstrek's lifted ride height (compared to its Impreza sibling), visibility is excellent”- Edmunds

Seating and Comfort

Subaru favored practicality over flashy interior designs and quality on the Crosstrek. The cabin is smartly laid-out with every feature and nobs easy to read and modulate without being distracting. Most SUVs in the segment are plagued with short cabin space, but not the Crosstrek it’s a capacious crossover with enough space and support on the front and rear seats. The headroom and legroom are satisfying and the seating position compliments the driver support. You get a good look at the hood and the road as visibility is not an issue, thanks to the big windshield and thin front pillars.

With seating for 5, the Subaru Crosstrek was born with strong SUV genes. Compared to other baby SUVs in the segment, Subaru offers a lot of space. The seats sit high above the ground thanks to its good ground clearance. Front seats feature 39.8 inches of headroom and 43.1 inches of legroom. The rear seats are not that bad either, the headroom is nice but the 36.5 inches of legroom is ok-ish though can create problems for people over 6 feet.

Cargo volume

The Crosstrek might feel like a mediocre vehicle for the space offered. Its cargo capacity is not that much so don’t carry a lot of luggage on your off-road expedition, which actually becomes a dilemma for off-road buyers. The standard cargo volume is rated at 15.9 cubic feet, this could be expanded through the standard 60/40 foldable seats to 55.3 cubic feet. They had to utilize the empty spaces inside the cabin, so they filled it with door pockets and cubby holes, so there is a lot of cabin utility on the Crosstrek.

As you climb up the trim ladder an 8-inch infotainment screen replaces the previous one with more tech-savvy features. Through you still have Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and Pandora integration as standard features throughout the trim family. Other standard tech come in the form of a built-in voice-activated navigation system, 4 audio speakers, Aha, SiriusXM and more.

2019 Subaru Crosstrek hybrid SUV Exterior

The 2019 Subaru Crosstrek has all the right outdoorsy cues, but you’ll have to add the requisite bike/kayak/canoe/ski/snowboard/tent to the roof and national park stickers to its rear window”- The Car Connection

Design and Dimensions

Let’s be honest everyone loves the idea of a beefed-up wagon, that’s what crafted the subcompact SUV segment in the first place. When the news reached Subaru’s headquarters in 2012 they gave us the Crosstrek and even then it was a blockbuster crossover. Today’s version has been made better, its taller than before with its massive 8.7-inch ground clearance, have a split up tail lights, unpainted fender flares, and 17/18 inch alloy wheels, everything required to forge a badass off-roader. However, the skin is more practical than appealing which pays off well in the Crosstrek’s case.

This bulky baby SUV was built bigger than the conventional subcompact mold. The total front to back length was rated at 175.8 inches, breath at 71 inches, and height at 63.3 inches. Its taller than the rest of its fellow SUVs and features an inspiring 8.7 inches of ground clearance for off-road intentions. The 104.9-inch wheelbase will give it a wider turning radius but it also gives the suspension enough time to soak up the bumps and jerks of rocky terrains.

2019 Subaru Crosstrek hybrid SUV Safety

A great fighter once said, “It ain't about how hard you hit, it's about how hard you can get hit”, and Subaru can take a hit without any major casualties. Though the Hybrid variant has not been crash-tested the base Crosstrek receives an all-star rating by the NHTSA. Though IIHS has not yet tested the Crosstrek yet last year’s Subaru gained the maximum Good Rating for every aspect which isn’t an easy nut to crack. Safety features like automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, and more.

2019 Subaru Crosstrek hybrid SUV Competition

Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV vs Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid

Mitsubishi Outlander is not a head-turner, neither it’s a luxurious ride, it’s a conventional commuter that gets the job done. The power output is not that impressive either, while the Crosstrek cashes in on this factor. On the other hand, Mitsubishi is more spacious and offers better practicality. It’s a worthwhile factor to consider if you have a big family to take care of.

Your choice of SUV will depend on your priorities, do you want a nimble crossover off-roader or a family hauler hybrid.

Hyundai Kona Electric vs Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid

The all-new Hyundai Kona EV is set to take the high road for all the hybrid SUVs in the county. It's the most powerful hybrid in the lot plus its an SUV for a big family. It's everything that the Crosstrek and Outlander aspire to become but fail at one aspect or the other. The 200 plus horsepower from the hybrid powertrain is the main attraction plus the ability to haul more people effortlessly is Kona’s superpower. Also, the practicality angle to the Kona is the best you will get on this price tag.

2019 Subaru Crosstrek hybrid SUV Final Verdict

You can say the Crosstrek is a Subaru Impreza in an SUV mystic minus the potent engine. Best suited for off-roading, it’s the rugged hybrid subcompact that everyone wants. With its high riding nature and better cabin space, Subaru competes in a league of its own. However, the Hybrid county homes other athletic subcompacts like the Mitsubishi Outlander and Hyundai Kona which outshines the Subaru with their sharp handling. Though Crosstrek is more than a buffed up wagon, it’s a practical vehicle altogether and appropriates for people living in the countryside. Furthermore, it’s not all sunshine, the engine feels sluggish and acceleration average.

The 2019 Subaru Crosstrek is a fulfilling package with fuel economy of a hybrid, spacious cabin of a Crossover, and off-roading capabilities of an offroader. If you can compromise with the average handling you can have something more than just an image of subcompact SUV.
