Subaru is just another Japanese automaker that has a strong presence in the market due to obvious reasons- Reliability and Value for money. They are most prominently known for their sports cars and their contribution to rally racing, but they also have some great entries in the SUV market. The Forester is one of the best-selling vehicles from Subaru and outsells the popular Outback. The 2022 Subaru Forester is in its fifth generation and it has visually changed over time, quite a lot from a boxy to now more sophisticated design language.

We Recommend

With the Forester, even the base trim offers an array of standard features and standard driving aids. We would recommend the Forester Premium trim as its adds alloy wheels and a panoramic sunroof that is missing on the base model.

2022 Subaru Forester Price

There isn’t any information available about the pricing but we are expecting it to stay near the sub $25,000 spot like the 2021model year.

2022 Subaru Forester Release Date

There is no information available about the release dates and dealership availability but as with every other 2022 launch; we should expect it to happen near the end of 2021.

2022 Subaru Forester Engine and Performance

The 2022 Forester might get a new 2.4L turbocharged engine currently being used in Subaru Outback. If not then we have our 2.5L, H-4 anyway. The drivetrain on the 2022 Forester is expected to say the same AWD standard on all trims. The 2.5L H-4 engine we have on the 2021 model makes 182 hp & 176 lb-ft of torque and is mated to a CVT transmission. The overall behavior of this engine is sluggish. It isn’t meant for performance, rather it is supposed to take you from Point A to B, and it does that well enough. Put your foot flat on the pedal and you will hear the engine screaming but that doesn’t reflect in the real-time acceleration.

The driving dynamics of this SUV are easygoing. The steering response is okay, nothing to write home about. Subaru says they have installed some special damping material on the glass and cabin and it shows as the wind noise on the highway is very well contained. The suspension setup is soft and that is how it is supposed to be on a family vehicle but the damping Subaru has done could have been better.

On rough roads, the SUV sucks all the bumps successfully but on major bumps or craters it bottoms out pretty easy. The drive mode selector on the current SUV may get an update with options like Sport, Normal, Comfort, Sport +, and Individual modes. The individual mode will have custom settings for up to 5 users and it will recognize their driving pattern automatically. Overall this SUV isn’t going to disappoint a normal user; just curb your expectations a little bit.

*2021 data used for reference

The 0-60 MPH timings of the Subaru are at 8.6 seconds & the quarter-mile timing comes in at 16.7 seconds. Honda CR-V is the slowest in this group with 9.3 seconds and the RAV4 being the fastest at 7.6 seconds. You are not meant to go drag racing in one of these but still, it's good to know the capability of your SUV.

2022 Subaru Forester Fuel Economy

The fuel economy on the Forester is good enough. It isn’t the best but not worse too. It offers 26 MPG in the city, 33 MPG on the highway, and 29 MPG combined. One advantage of the Subaru is the largest in the segment fuel tank at 16.6 gallons.

Range (City/Highway/Combined, in Miles)

As expected the Honda has the best in city fuel efficiency, almost best on the highways too. Having a large fuel tank provides the Forester a very good overall range than the competition. Toyota RAV4 has the best in class highway efficiency; credit to the efficient 8-Speed automatic transmission.

2022 Subaru Forester Interior

Nowadays interior changes only mean high-quality material and bigger infotainment screens. The 2022 Forester has a nice interior overall. Leather and soft-touch plastic are used on most surfaces along with the silver accents. The dashboard design is quite different as it has a small display on the top to display the fuel economy and range and can also display some infotainment stuff. This display can be controlled by the on-steering controls only. The instrument cluster is the usual two analog dials and a driver’s display setup. There is a nice golf ball-like texture used on the center console and some plastic bits of the cabin.

The interior on the Sport trim is great with orange accents used around the A/C vents and on the center console. The cloth upholstery on the base trim is good but the leather upholstery you will get on the limited and touring trims suit the interior more. The leather use on the seats isn’t too soft; it is rather made a little sturdy to sustain the wear and tear. The driver-side seat is power-adjustable on all but the base trim. Passengers will have to adjust theirs manually. Seats are comfortable with enough legroom and knee room.

We might see an upgrade in the infotainment system as the 2021 Forester only gets a 6.5-inch screen on the base trim with Android Auto & Apple CarPlay. You can get an 8-inch screen and a Harmon Kardon system as an option though. The screen on the 2021 model has a glass panel and it reflects a lot of light. The same thing goes with the switches. It does look premium but also attracts lots of smudges and fingerprints. We expect an anti-glare display with at least 12-inches or more; it’s trending nowadays. Some matte coating for the switches will do well too.

Seating Capacity

Front Row (Headroom/Shoulder Room/Leg Room, in inches)

Rear Row (Headroom/Shoulder Room/Leg Room, in inches)

Trunk Capacity (cubic feet)

The second row is where the Forester shines. The knee room is amazing. You can slide your feet under the front seats and then you will have great thigh support. The seats though are pretty flat but can’t expect everything at this price range. The boot space on the Forester is 31.1 cubic feet and it will remain unchanged for the upcoming year. CR-V offers a spacious cabin along with the highest cargo capacity. The notable interior features of the 2022 Subaru Forester include:

  • 8-speaker Harman Kardon sound system
  • SiriusXM all-access satellite radio
  • Bluetooth audio streaming
  • Travellink navigation
  • AndroidAuto
  • AppleCarplay
  • FM/AM
  • Hands-free phone

2022 Subaru Forester Exterior

The Subaru Forester has always been an SUV with understated looks but it has followed the trends and kept the Forester relevant all these years. The 2022 Forester may get a front fascia update and the taillight setup might get a retouch. That’s about it when it comes to exterior changes. The 2021 model itself looks great with a muscular hood and aggressive headlight setup. The way body panels penetrate inside the taillights looks pretty good.

The Sport trim of the Forester looks the best among all both on the inside and the outside. Subaru might unveil the “Wilderness Edition” with rugged looks and beefy tires. There is generously enough space under the cargo bed for some hiding stuff. Like every other SUV, it has a power liftgate.

Curb Weight (lbs)

Length (inches)

Width (inches)

Height (inches)

Ground Clearance (inches)

Wheelbase (inches)

Considering the current exterior, Subaru will have to do something different than Honda and Toyota as both offer pretty good-looking SUVs at the moment. The Forster offers a ground clearance of 8.7 inches which is bigger than the rivals. The larger ground clearance allows the Forester to offer good off-road capabilities. The notable exterior features of the 2022 Subaru Forester include:

  • Adaptive LED Headlights with DRLs
  • LED foglights
  • 17-inch/18-inch alloy wheels
  • Automatic high beam
  • Roof rails
  • Blacked-out front and rear bumper
  • Keyless entry
  • Power liftgate

2022 Subaru Forester Safety

The 2022 Forster is yet to go through safety tests. However, the 2021 Forester has done pretty well in the NHTSA tests, scoring 5-Stars in every category and 4 stars in the rollover rating. The rollover risk is at an expected 16.90%. The IIHS safety ratings reflect the amazing results with a ‘Good’ rating in every category. No doubt it has got the Top Safety Pick+ award. All the SUVs in the competition have a Top Safety Pick award from the IIHS.

The 2022 Forester also comes with an array of active safety features. The DriverFocus Distraction system detects the drowsiness of the driver and provides the required assist. The Subaru exclusive EyeSight Driver assist is supposed to get an update for 2022 and will likely add a 360-degree camera to the suite. The notable safety features include:

  • Blindspot detection
  • Rear traffic cross alert
  • Rear vision camera
  • Reverse automatic braking

2022 Subaru Forester Competition

2022 Subaru Forester vs 2022 Honda CR-V

The Honda CR-V takes away all the points in the design section. The aggressive headlight setup itself uplifts the overall look of the SUV. Performance-wise it is all known to everyone that the CR-V is one of the best in the segment. The CR-V's interior is on par with the Subaru, but the all-digital instrument cluster steals the show.

2022 Subaru Forester vs 2021 Toyota RAV4

Toyota RAV4 is the best-looking SUV in its segment. The engine makes the most power in its segment, and the fuel efficiency also is good, on par with the Subaru. The hybrid motors add more power and increase fuel efficiency. The Rav4's interior is very well designed compared to the Forester. This segment is really about comfort and fuel efficiency and all of the SUVs are more or less doing the job well.

2022 Subaru Forester vs 2022 Chevrolet Equinox

When comparing both the compact SUVs, the Forester is a superb choice. Though the Chevy Equinox offers some nice features including the driver preset memory package, the Forester offers significant specs like symmetrical all-wheel drive and 112 cubic ft passenger volume. The Forester has most of the features as standard and that makes ur a tremendous choice over the Equinox.

In terms of driving experience, both SUVs are good at it. The Forester is far more upgraded with its StarLink Apps suite compared to Equinox. The technological features of Forester are placed in a better way compared to the Chevy Equinox. So now you know what makes the Subaru a perfect choice as a compact SUV.

2022 Subaru Forester Final Verdict

The current Subaru Forester serves its purpose nicely, and that’s what everyone will expect from an SUV. The sport trim in the Forster offers a nice interior. The suspension setup needs improvement, and let’s hope Subaru does some tweaks in the upcoming model. The interior is on par with the competition, and with extra options, it feels better than the price you pay. If the speculations are to be believed, the 2022 Forester might get a 2.4L turbo engine currently being used in the Subaru Outback. If it happens, it will enhance the overall performance of the SUV.
