The Forester is one of the best-selling vehicles from Subaru, one that outsells even the popular Outback midsize SUV. The 2022 Subaru Forester is in its fifth generation, and it is most likely to remain a carryover from last year. It will, however, be joined by an all-new Wilderness model returning a combined fuel economy of 26 mpg as per the EPA.

The Subaru Forester Wilderness will be the second model after the Outback Wilderness under Subaru's Wilderness sub-brand. It will feature exclusivities like all-terrain tires, higher ground clearance, additional body claddings, and Wilderness badges on its exterior and interior. Official prices and release date are yet to be known but expect it to be priced around $37,000.

2022 Subaru Forester Buying Advice

When the 2022 Subaru Forester gets released for sale, would recommend going for the Premium trim. It adds high-end features like alloy wheels and a panoramic sunroof, making it look like a well-specced and value-for-money model.

2022 Subaru Forester Features

Currently, the Subaru Forester is available in five trim levels: Base, Premium, Sport, Limited, and Touring. All models come standard with Symmetrical AWD, STARLINK multimedia infotainment system powered by Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, and Subaru EyeSight driver-assist technology. A 2.5-liter Naturally Aspirated Flat-4 engine and CVT remain standard on all trim levels as well.

The range-topping Touring trim adds all of the Limited's optional features and offers features such as a power-adjustable passenger seat, standard driver monitoring system, heated rear outboard seats, heated steering wheel, and memory settings for the driver's seat. With the Forester, even the base trim offers an array of standard features and standard driving aids.

There isn’t any information available about the pricing of the 2022 model, but we are expecting it to stay near the sub-$25,000 spot like the 2021 model year. There is no information available about the release date and dealership availability either, but as with every other Subaru launch, we should expect it to happen near the end of 2021.

2022 Subaru Forester Engine and Performance

The 2022 Forester might get a new 2.4L turbocharged engine currently being used in Subaru Outback. If not, then we have our 2.5L H-4 anyway. The drivetrain on the 2022 Forester is expected to say the same AWD standard on all trims. The 2.5L H-4 engine we have on the 2021 model makes 182 hp and 176 lb-ft of torque and is mated to a CVT transmission. The overall behavior of this engine is sluggish. It isn’t meant for performance, rather it is supposed to take you from point A to B, and it does that well enough. Put your foot flat on the pedal and you will hear the engine screaming, but that doesn’t reflect in the real-time acceleration.

The driving dynamics of this SUV are easygoing. The steering response is okay, nothing to write home about. Subaru says they have installed some special damping material on the glass and cabin, and it shows as the wind noise on the highway is very well contained. The suspension setup is soft, and that is how it is supposed to be on a family vehicle, but the damping Subaru has done could have been better. On rough roads, the SUV sucks all the bumps successfully, but on major bumps or craters it bottoms out pretty easy. The drive mode selector on the current SUV may get an update with options like Sport, Normal, Comfort, Sport +, and Individual modes.

The Individual mode will have custom settings for up to 5 users, and it will recognize their driving pattern automatically. Overall, this SUV isn’t going to disappoint a normal user. Just curb your expectations a little bit. The 0-60 MPH sprint of the Forester takes 8.5 seconds and the quarter-mile comes in at 16.7 seconds. In comparison, the Honda CR-V is the fastest in this group despite being the least powerful, with 7.8 seconds needed to reach 60 MPH from 0. The RAV4, on the other hand, makes most power but is only slightly quicker than the Forester. You are not meant to go drag racing in one of these. Still, it's good to know the capability of your SUV.

2022 Subaru Forester Fuel Economy

8.0/10

The fuel economy on the Forester compact SUV is good enough. It isn’t the best but considering how it gets AWD as standard, its ratings definitely stand out. It offers 26 MPG in the city, 33 MPG on the highway, and 29 MPG combined.

One advantage of the Subaru is that it has the largest fuel tank, allowing it to offer over 500 miles of maximum range. As expected, the Honda CR-V has the best fuel efficiency overall. But it is let down by its rather small 14.0-gallon gas tank.

2022 Subaru Forester Interior

9.0/10

The Subaru Forester has a nice interior overall. Leather and soft-touch plastic are used on most surfaces along with the silver accents. The dashboard design is quite different as it has a small display on the top to display the fuel economy and range and can also display some infotainment stuff. This display can be controlled by the on-steering controls only.

The instrument cluster is the usual two analog dials and a driver’s display setup. There is a nice golf ball-like texture used on the center console and some plastic bits of the cabin. The interior on the Sport trim is great with orange accents used around the A/C vents and on the center console. The cloth upholstery on the base trim is good but the leather upholstery you will get on the Limited and Touring trims suit the cabin better.

The leather use on the seats isn’t too soft. It is made a little sturdy to sustain wear and tear. The driver-side seat is power-adjustable on all but the base trim. Passengers will have to adjust theirs manually. Seats are comfortable with enough leg and knee room. The second row is where the Forester shines. The knee room is amazing, however, you will have to slide your feet ahead in order to have great thigh support.

The seats though are pretty flat but can’t expect everything at this price range. The boot space on the Forester is 31.1 cubic feet and it will remain unchanged for the upcoming year. CR-V offers a spacious cabin along with the highest cargo capacity. We might see an upgrade in the infotainment system as the 2021 Forester only gets a 6.5-inch screen on the base trim with Android Auto & Apple CarPlay.

You can get an 8-inch screen and a Harmon Kardon system as an option though. The screen on the 2021 model has a glass panel and it reflects a lot of light. The same thing goes with the switches. It does look premium but also attracts lots of smudges and fingerprints. We expect an anti-glare display with at least 12-inches or more; it’s trending nowadays. Some matte coating for the switches will do well too.

The notable interior features of the Subaru Forester include:

  • 8-speaker Harman Kardon sound system
  • SiriusXM all-access satellite radio
  • Bluetooth audio streaming
  • Travellink navigation
  • AndroidAuto
  • AppleCarplay
  • FM/AM
  • Hands-free phone

2022 Subaru Forester Exterior

8.0/10

The Subaru Forester has always been an SUV with understated looks. Although, Subaru has followed the trends and kept the compact SUV relevant all these years. The 2022 Forester may get a front fascia update, and the taillight setup might get a retouch. That’s about it when it comes to exterior changes. The 2021 model itself looks great with a muscular hood and aggressive headlight setup.

The way body panels penetrate inside the taillights looks pretty good. The Sport trim of the Forester looks the best among all both on the inside and the outside. Subaru might unveil the “Wilderness Edition” with even more rugged looks and beefy tires. There is generously enough space under the cargo bed for some hiding stuff. Like every other SUV, it has a power liftgate.

Considering the current exterior, Subaru will have to do something different than Honda and Toyota as both offer pretty good-looking SUVs at the moment. The Forster offers a ground clearance of 8.7 inches, which is a lot higher than the rivals. The larger ground clearance allows the Forester to offer the best off-road capabilities among rivals.

The notable exterior features of the Subaru Forester include:

  • Adaptive LED Headlights with DRLs
  • LED foglights
  • 17-inch/18-inch alloy wheels
  • Automatic high beam
  • Roof rails
  • Blacked-out front and rear bumper
  • Keyless entry

2022 Subaru Forester Safety

8.0/10

The 2022 Forster is yet to go through safety tests. However, the 2021 Forester has done pretty well in the NHTSA tests, scoring 5-Stars in every category and 4 stars in the rollover rating. The rollover risk is at an expected 16.90%. The IIHS safety ratings reflect the amazing results with a ‘Good’ rating in every category. No doubt it has got the Top Safety Pick+ award. The 2022 Forester also comes with an array of active safety features. The DriverFocus Distraction system detects the drowsiness of the driver and provides the required assist. The Subaru exclusive EyeSight Driver assist is supposed to get an update for 2022 and will likely add a 360-degree camera to the suite.

The notable safety features of the Subaru Forester include:

  • Blindspot detection
  • Rear traffic cross alert
  • Rear vision camera
  • Reverse automatic braking

2022 Subaru Forester Competition

9.0/10

Subaru Forester vs. Honda CR-V

The Honda CR-V takes away all the points in the design section. The aggressive headlight setup itself uplifts the overall look of the SUV. Performance-wise it is all known to everyone that the CR-V is one of the best in the segment. The CR-V's interior is on par with the Subaru, but the all-digital instrument cluster steals the show.

Honda CR-V

Subaru Forester vs. Toyota RAV4

Toyota RAV4 is the best-looking SUV in its segment. The engine makes the most power in its segment, and the fuel efficiency also is good, on par with the Subaru. It also has hybrid motors that add more power and increase fuel efficiency. The RAV4's interior is very well designed compared to the Forester. This segment is really about comfort and fuel efficiency and all of the SUVs are more or less doing the job well.

Toyota RAV4

Subaru Forester vs. Chevrolet Equinox

When comparing both compact SUVs, the Forester is a superb choice. Though the Chevy Equinox offers some nice features including the driver preset memory package, the Forester offers significant specs like symmetrical all-wheel drive and 112 cubic ft passenger volume. The Forester has most of the features as standard and that makes ur a tremendous choice over the Equinox.

Chevrolet Equinox

2022 Subaru Forester Final Verdict

The Subaru Forester serves its purpose nicely, and that’s what everyone will expect from an SUV. The interior is on par with the competition, and with extra options, it feels better than the price you pay. Sure the suspension setup needs improvement, and let’s hope Subaru does some tweaks in the upcoming model. If the speculations are to be believed, the 2022 Forester might get a 2.4L turbo engine currently being used in the Subaru Outback. If that happens, it will enhance the overall performance of the SUV a lot more.
