The Subaru Impreza stands out in its segment as it comes with a standard AWD drivetrain across all trims. It comes with added grip, traction, and stability over the usual FWD competitors, which might attract buyers. The 2014 Subaru Impreza sedan comes with minor improvements over the last year’s model. Overall it is a carryover model with a slight polish over the 2013 model. Pricing starts at $17,895 for the base trim of the 2014 Impreza, while the top-end Limited trim costs $22,195.

For 2014, the Impreza’s high-end Limited trim gets a rearview camera as standard, and when opted for navigation, you get the smartphone integration function bundled along with it. The Impreza sedan is offered with a single-engine and two transmission options in three trim lines. The 2014 Subaru Impreza comes in three trim lines, which are the 2.0i base. the mid-level 2.0i Premium, and the top-end 2.0i Limited. All models are equipped with the same 2.0L four-cylinder engine under the hood. There are two transmission options on offer, which are a 5-speed manual that comes standard in the base and mid-level trims, while the top-end Limited trim is only offered with a CVT transmission. We Recommend

The highest-end 2.0i Limited trim would be the best choice. It is obviously more expensive than the mid-level Premium trim, but it comes with a lot more features and that justifies the higher price. It is evident from the features table that the Limited trim is well-packed with a plethora of impressive features such as the automatic climate control system, leather-trimmed upholstery, and Rear-Vision Camera, making it the best choice to opt for.

2014 Subaru Impreza Engine and Performance

8.0/10

All trims of the 2014 Subaru Impreza sedan are powered by a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder boxer (flat-4) engine which offers 148 hp and 145 lb-ft of torque. The base and mid-level trims of the Impreza come mated to a 5-speed manual transmission, while a CVT is optional. The high-end Limited trim comes with the CVT as standard along with a manual mode and paddle shifters. All Impreza models come in an AWD configuration as standard.

The CVT transmission works along with the Subaru Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system and puts more power on the front wheels, whereas when more traction is required, it transfers more power to the rear wheels. The 2014 Impreza sedan performs pretty well, and the engine is strong enough to take the sedan to 60 mph in 8.7 seconds and cross the quarter-mile mark in 16.4 seconds. These figures are good and on the faster side of the spectrum.

The Mazda 3 is the most powerful machine in terms of raw power output as well as speed, followed by the Impreza. The Mazda also handles impressively, which puts the Impreza in the second place as it also is a well-handling sedan. However, the Mazda has a more responsive and engaging 6-speed transmission unlike the CVT in the Impreza, making it the true winner in the performance department.

2014 Subaru Impreza Fuel Economy

7.0/10

The 2014 Subaru Impreza doesn’t perform as expected from a CVT transmission. The standard AWD drivetrain might have a role to play in increasing fuel consumption. The Subaru Impreza delivers a fuel economy of 27 mpg in the city, 36 mpg on the highway, and a combined efficiency of 30 mpg. Available with a 14.5-gallon fuel capacity, the Impreza sedan can run up to 435 miles without refueling in combined driving conditions.

The Mazda 3 again manages to excel. Apart from the impressive performance and superb handling, it also offers exceptional fuel efficiency, giving one more reason to choose the Mazda. The Honda Civic follows the Mazda with a slightly lower fuel economy. The Subaru and the Chevy Cruze lag behind, providing very similar and significantly lower fuel efficiency.

2014 Subaru Impreza Interior

7.0/10

The 2014 Impreza sedan has a high-quality and premium-looking cabin made up of sturdy elements and materials. The interior is spacious and offers plenty of room for all occupants in the front and rear rows. The front row legroom of the Impreza is super good and is one of the best in the segment. The controls and the center console are also nicely laid out, and everything is ergonomically placed and is easy to reach.

The seats in the Impreza sedan are comfortable and supportive and would keep all passengers comfortable on long drives. They are covered with tricot or striped cloth upholstery in the lower trims, while the high-end trim comes with leather-covered seats. The Limited trim also comes with leather-wrapped steering and shift knob along with automatic climate control. The cargo capacity offered on the Impreza is the lowest at 12.0 cu-ft.

All of the sedans compared here, except the Chevy Cruze, have impressive interiors. The Cruze, however, features an outdated-looking dashboard and not very comfortable seats. The Mazda again comes with the most beautiful looking cabin and topples all of the competition in that regard. The Honda Civic is the most spacious option, while the Cruze offers the most cargo capacity. Following are some of the most important interior features in the 2014 Impreza sedan-

  • Leather-trimmed upholstery
  • Leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift handle
  • Automatic climate control system
  • 6-way manually adjustable driver’s seat
  • 4-way manually adjustable front passenger’s seat
  • Heated front seats (All-Weather Package)
  • 60/40-split flat-folding rear seatback

How intuitive is the 2014 Subaru Impreza’s infotainment unit?

The Impreza comes equipped with a 4.3-inch infotainment unit. The lower trim comes with a 4-speaker audio system, whereas the high-end trims get 6 speakers. The audio quality is bad, and even the 6-speaker unit turns out to be unsatisfactory. The infotainment screen is also not the best in the market, being unresponsive to inputs. The following are the main infotainment features of the Impreza sedan-

  • 6-speaker single-CD audio system
  • 4.3-inch LCD display
  • HD Radio
  • USB port
  • iPod control,
  • Bluetooth connectivity
  • 3.5-mm auxiliary jack

2014 Subaru Impreza Exterior

7.0/10

The 2014 Impreza is a sporty-looking sedan with some stealthy styling and a sharp design language. The front-end features a good-looking grille that is not too big or too small with the Subaru logo integrated into the center of it. The front end overall is beautiful and pretty aggressive looking with great simplicity to its design. Overall the Impreza sedan looks handsome in the segment.

The 2014 Subaru Impreza sedan is offered with 16-inch alloys in the base and mid-variants, while the higher trim comes with larger 17-inch ones. The Impreza also gets fog lamps in the highest trim, which is not a prominent exterior feature, but that is all we get on the exterior of this sedan as a prominent feature. There is no sunroof on offer with the Impreza, which is a letdown.

The 2014 Mazda 3 again scores highest, now in the exterior department. It is one of the best-looking and elegant machines offered in the segment. The Mazda is also the lightest among the competitors, and along with the Subaru, it is also the longest. All of the sedans we have compared here are good-looking, however, the Mazda stands out by being the classiest. The following are some of the most important exterior features-

  • 17-inch aluminum-alloy wheels
  • Fog lights
  • Body-color door handles with chrome accents
  • Heated side mirrors and windshield wiper de-icer (All-Weather Package)
  • Single exhaust outlet with stainless tip

2014 Subaru Impreza Safety

6.0/10

The 2014 Subaru Impreza gets outstanding safety ratings from NHTSA as well as IIHS. It gets an overall 5-star safety rating from NHTSA and super impressive safety ratings under all individual parameters. IIHS has awarded the Impreza with the Top Safety Pick title which means that it has an impeccable safety standard. All of this concretes the fact that the Impreza sedan is one of the safest sedans in the segment. The following are some of the most important safety features in the Impreza sedan-

  • Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC)
  • Traction Control System (TCS)
  • Brake Assist
  • Brake Override System
  • Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS)
  • Daytime Running Lights (DRL)

2014 Subaru Impreza Final Verdict

The 2014 Subaru Impreza sedan is a great option in the segment. It comes with a powerful engine and a spacious interior. It also handles impressively and is engaging to drive. However, the Impreza comes only after the Mazda 3 in all matters. The Mazda 3 is more powerful, faster, and more spacious than the Impreza. It also offers much more fuel efficiency and also is the more stylish one from the exterior while also having a fresher-looking interior. All of this makes the Mazda 3 the obvious choice, and the Impreza although not a bad car, only comes after the Mazda.
