As a Japanese carmaker, Subaru has impressed us with a lineup of cars that are very reliable and offer more value for money. The Impreza is a compact lineup from Subaru offering a sedan and a hatchback over the same platform and has been seen for quite some time now. For the 2022 model year, Subaru has been very secretive about the upcoming model. That said, the 2022 Subaru Impreza is expected that the car will come with a lot of visual changes on the exterior and interior and maybe in the performance section.

Expert Review, Pricing Analysis and Buying Guide

As of the current-gen Impreza, it has a very roomy and comfortable cabin with adequate functionalities for the driver and the passengers. That being said, it is the only car in the competition to provide an AWD system as standard and that makes it so much easier not to lose traction on the road. Overall, it is a very impressive car for the price and in few areas, offer more than the competition. The Subaru Impreza competes with the likes of the Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla, and Hyundai Elantra.

2022 Subaru Impreza Features

We expect the Subaru Impreza trim levels to be carried over from 2021, despite the overhaul in design and styling. If the Impreza undergoes a change in platform, we believe it will not affect the trim levels due to the different body styles the vehicle is available in, making it hard to increase trims for one particular body style which in this case, is the sedan. Expected to be sold in Base, Premium, Sport, and Limited variants, the Subaru Impreza sedan is a sportier-looking version of its hatchback cousin.

We Recommend

Subaru is one of the most genuine car manufacturers to date, offering real sportiness in its sport variants, and offering comfort and luxuries in its other variants. This can be seen in the Sport trim not being the most expensive, but getting larger alloys and sporty features all around, whereas the most expensive Limited trim receives more creature comforts, but smaller wheels for a more comfortable ride. The Subaru Impreza however, has not shown the most refinement among its competition, so you would be better off with the Limited trim, as you can expect a Subaru to last. Nevertheless, if constant maintenance and driving pleasure is your thing, then the Sport variant is for you.

Price:

The price for the base trim of the Impreza is expected to be around $19,000-21,000 which is quite expected given the fact that the Impreza is expected to get revamped styling with a refreshed platform and a better engine.

Release Date:

The upcoming 2022 Subaru Impreza is expected to launch sometime later this year or maybe at the beginning of 2022 and it should hit the dealerships by Summer 2022.

2022 Subaru Impreza Engine and Performance

The 2022 Subaru Impreza is expected to come with a new bigger and more powerful engine which is seen in a few Subaru cars already. But as of the 2021 model year, the Impreza packs a 2.0L Boxer 4 cylinder engine. This engine is quite punchy and powerful than most of the cars in the competition. This engine puts out a decent 152 horsepower and 145 pound-feet of max torque. The transmission system has a choice for the Impreza with a continuously variable transmission system or a 5-speed manual transmission.

The performance of the upcoming 2022 model year is expected to be more than the current year because of the suspected new 2.5L engine replacing the old 2.0L boxer. However, the Impreza does 0-60 MPH in 9.0 seconds which is a bit disappointing and that is obvious for the AWD system. Apart from that, the engine feels torquey and does not lose power in the top-end.

The 2021 Subaru Impreza puts out a very potent performance considering it is priced the lowest in the competition. Although the Honda Civic emerged as the most powerful in the competition but not as torquey as the Impreza. If the new engine comes into play with the 2022 model year, it could beat Honda Civic with the cars in terms of performance.

2022 Subaru Impreza Fuel Economy

The current generation Subaru Impreza returns a very decent fuel economy and that includes the benefit of having a boxer engine. The Impreza manages to return 28 MPG in the city, 36 MPG on the highways, and a combined fuel economy of 31 MPG. The numbers do not sound much but considering the Impreza comes with an AWD system, the mileage figures are pretty impressive. Also, the fuel range is great with over 400 miles combined. The 2022 Impreza is expected to have a similar or better fuel economy with the possible new engine.

The 2021 Hyundai Elantra delivers impeccable mileage for the competition followed by the Toyota Corolla and Honda Civic but please do keep in mind that they are all front-wheel-drive cars which the Subaru Impreza is not. The Subaru Impreza puts out a decent mileage for the AWD system.

2022 Subaru Impreza Interior

The interior of the Impreza is very practical with enough space and decent quality cabin materials. The interior looks inspired by the Legacy and Subaru strictly follows the design cues from it. The dashboard is dark grey colored hard plastic made which is common for the segment for the price. At the center, the infotainment screen is a 6.5-inch touch-sensitive display and the left holds the analog-digital instrument cluster which offers good visibility and offers multiple details about the fuel economy, engine temperature, trip meters, etc.

The center console also holds the gear-shifter which is Subaru’s golf club styled. For the 2022 model year, it is expected to have a redesigned interior with new elements and a different instrument cluster layout. The infotainment features for the 2022 model year will carry over from the 2021 model year. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity come as standard with navigation support and other goodies.

The seats are covered with good quality clothing and offer extensive comfort on the road. Both rows offer a decent amount of legroom and headroom and additional storage spaces. Although, the cargo capacity on the Impreza is on the lower side but can take your daily loads and a few duffles or suitcases if you plan to for weekend getaways.

The Impreza along with the other cars offer similar cabin spaciousness with adequate headroom and legroom. Although, the 2021 Hyundai Elantra offers slightly better legroom at the rear which makes the rear quite flexible for tall passengers. The 2021 Toyota Corolla offers a bit of cramped cabin space overall. However, the trunk capacity of the 2021 Honda Civic is best in class although sedans do not offer a lot of cargo space. The Impreza offers the least cargo capacity in the competition. A few key features of the current-gen Impreza which will carry over to the 2022 model year are as follows:

  • 6.5 or 8-inch touchscreen infotainment screen
  • Automatic climate control system
  • Navigation system
  • Leather-covered steering wheel
  • Remote engine start
  • Harman Kardon 8 speaker audio system (optional)

2022 Subaru Impreza Exterior

The exterior of the Subaru Impreza has been updated throughout the years with minor changes which are vaguely noticeable. It is reported that the upcoming 2022 model year is going to have a re-designed exterior with a lot of changes and still retaining the Impreza styling from the outgoing model year. The front is expected to get redesigned LED headlamps with a new intake grille layout.

The rear will possibly share a similar taillight design with subtle changes with the exhaust cutout. According to the 2021 model year, the Impreza still gets a 17-inch alloy wheel and foglights on both the front and back. Also, the Impreza will get newer color options with more chrome elements to look superior to the competition.

The 2021 Impreza is the heaviest compact sedan for the competition with 3047 pounds and the 2021 Hyundai Elantra is the lightest in the segment. Apart from that, all the 4 cars share pretty much similar dimensions for its offering. The Impreza and Civic have slightly lower ground clearance. With the 2022 model year, Subaru should shed some weight from the Impreza to make it stand strong in the segment. A few of the exterior highlights of the current-gen Impreza which might get carried over to the 2022 model year are as follows:

  • New color options
  • Automatic LED headlamps
  • Heated side mirrors
  • 17-inch aluminum-alloy wheels
  • Rain-sensing wipers

2022 Subaru Impreza Safety

The overall safety quotient of the present generation Subaru Impreza is as impressive it can be. The overall build quality and chassis make it more durable along with the driver assistance features. As of the upcoming 2022 model year, we are expecting a newer platform for the Impreza with a more stable chassis and updated safety features that can make it stand out in the competition just like the current-gen 2021 model year.

The 2021 Impreza gets all 5 out of 5 stars in the crash tests conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, which is impressive given that the car comes with a lot of standard safety features. Because of that, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has rated the car very well and has been awarded the ‘Top Safety Pick+’ of 2020. A few of the important driver assistance safety features are as follows:

  • Automatic emergency braking
  • Lane-departure warning
  • Lane-keeping assist
  • Forward collision warning
  • Blind-spot monitoring system
  • Rear-cross traffic alert

2022 Subaru Impreza Competition

2022 Subaru Impreza vs 2021 Honda Civic

The Honda Civic is better in performance, fuel efficiency, cargo capacity, and a bit of rear legroom than the Impreza however, the Impreza has a more punchy engine with an AWD system, advanced safety features, and overall sporty nature over the Civic. With the 2022 model year, we can expect a lot of changes and be better than the current year. For the price, we think that the Impreza has a better value for the money.

2022 Subaru Impreza vs 2021 Toyota Corolla

The 2021 Toyota Corolla looks sharp from the outside but in competition with the Impreza, it lacks the performance, overall interior design, quality of materials inside the cabin, and lacks the electronic bundles the Impreza is familiar with. On the other hand, the Impreza can be highly customized for its sporty nature, better handling due to the AWD system, and has better interior designs and materials which are worth mentioning.

2022 Subaru Impreza vs 2021 Hyundai Elantra.

The current-gen Hyundai Elantra is very similar in appeal to the Toyota Corolla. It means that the designs are kept minimal yet stylish at least on the outside. The Elantra is ahead in delivering better mileage figures, and the overall cabin capacity than the Impreza. The latter on the other hand is better in performance, overall build quality, and electronics. For the price, we think that the Impreza is a better buy but however it depends on personal opinion.

2022 Subaru Impreza Final Verdict

The Subaru Impreza has always been a very reliable and sporty compact family sedan with all the modern touches you can expect and with a price that is strikingly lower than the competition. The upcoming 2022 model year is expected to get an all-new design with an updated platform, newer powertrain options, and an overall design overhaul. With time, Impreza has started to get a bit dated with its similar looks from 2017 and since then, the car has been getting minor visual updates which are merely noticeable.

But there have been strong predictions about the 2022 Subaru Impreza which can be a competent leader. The price is expected to be around $19,000 for the base trim and going all the way up to around $27,000 for the top-tier trim. For the money, the Subaru Impreza has always amazed us with the techs and performance it can churn out but to stand firm against the competition, a makeover is much needed.
