2017 Subaru Impreza Hatchback Engine

5.9/10

“The 2017 Subaru Impreza isn't the sportiest model in the compact car class (nor is it the most boring), but it is among the only ones that come with all-wheel drive. The powertrain is adequate for daily driving, and it uses less gasoline than many rivals. The Impreza has a comfortable and composed ride.”- cars.usnews

Engine and Transmission

Under the hood, the 2017 Subaru Impreza Hatchback features a 2.0-Liter 4-Cylinder engine. The maximum power and torque output of the Impreza’s engine corresponds to 152 hp and 145 lbs.-ft. respectively.

Torque 145 lb-ft @ 4000 rpm 167 lb-ft @ 1800 rpm 146 lb-ft @ 4450 rpm 184 lb-ft @ 2500 rpm

The engine capacities of both the Honda Civic and Fiat 500L are lesser than the Impreza, but they are more powerful due to the presence of the turbocharging technology. The 174 hp of engine power offered by the Honda Civic Hatchback is the highest while Fiat 500L has the highest torque figure of 184 lbs.-ft. Furthermore, the Honda Civic employs a 6-speed manual transmission, whereas, both Ford Focus and Fiat 500L utilize a 6-speed automatic transmission.

Acceleration

As the engine of 2017 Subaru Impreza Hatchback is not much power, it performs very badly in the acceleration department with its 0-60 mph time being 9.2 seconds. On the contrary, the Honda Civics’ throttle response is the best, which allows it to achieve a speed of 60 mph from a standstill in just 7.0 seconds.

Ride and Handling

Going for long rides on the Impreza hatchback is what it’s meant for. The seats are cozy enough to make the passengers relaxed at all times. Furthermore, the well-tuned suspension of the Impreza minimize the impacts inside the cabin thus increasing the overall comfort level. From the driving perspective, the 2017 Subaru Impreza Hatchback has perfect ergonomics.

The tilt and telescopic steering wheel enable the driver to adjust it to a comfy position. Moreover, the traction and stability control features improve the handling capability of the car. The only lag observed in the Impreza Hatchback is its throttle response, which makes it difficult to take passes on high-speeds.

Braking

The 11.6-inch front brakes and 10.8-inch rear brakes allow the 2017 Subaru Impreza Hatchback to come at a halt from 60 mph after a covering a distance of 118 feet, which is really good. Both the Ford Focus Hatchback and Fiat 500L hatchback have less efficient brakes than the one employed in the Impreza.

2017 Subaru Impreza Hatchback Interior

7.8/10

“The new Impreza's interior is a big leap forward for Subaru, but it's still not as nice as the Honda Civic or Mazda 3. Those two vehicles sit right at the head of the class and edge the Impreza out in most categories.” - Edmunds

Seating and Comfort

The passenger accommodation capacity of the Subaru Impreza is 5, which is just like any other hatchback. Coming to the interior space for passengers, the Impreza has 39.8 inches of headroom, 56.7 inches of shoulder room and 43.1 inches of legroom at its front row. Furthermore, the legroom of Impreza is spacious than all its rivals.

Infotainment System

For the entertainment purpose, the 2017 Subaru Impreza Hatchback comes with a standard 6.5-inch touchscreen infotainment system. The detailing of the infotainment system is eye-catching and its functionality is also very good. Additionally, the infotainment system is coupled with a four-speaker audio system and supports navigation as well. Users can also connect their smartphones to the infotainment system via Android Auto or Apple CarPlay feature.

Interior Features

At the interior, the 2017 Impreza hatchback comes with plenty of standard features such as 2 one-touch power windows, heated mirrors, well-finished cloth upholstery on lower trims, dual vanity mirrors, front seatback storage, and power steering mounted audio and cruise controls. Additionally, the infotainment display at the dashboard’s mid center and a small vehicle info display above it, allows the cabin to look futuristic.

Cargo Capacity

Behind the rear seat, the Subaru Impreza hatchback offers the least cargo volume of 20.8 cubic feet as compared to the other three hatchbacks. However, after folding down the rear seat, the cargo capacity takes a big leap to become 55.3 cubic feet, which is second best after the 68 cubic feet offered by Fiat 500L’s trunk.

2017 Subaru Impreza Hatchback Exterior

2017 Subaru Impreza Hatchback Competition

Subaru Impreza Hatchback vs Honda Civic Hatchback

The Subaru Impreza hatchback gets competition from its Japanese counterpart Honda Civic hatchback. Priced a little higher than the Impreza, the Civic Hatchback offers better statistics in various parameters such as engine performance, acceleration, braking, fuel economy and cargo capacity behind the rear seat. However, the Impreza only outpaces the Honda Civic in terms of second-row space and cargo volume with the rear seat folded down.

Subaru Impreza Hatchback vs Ford Focus Hatchback

Ford Focus hatchback is yet another major rival of the Impreza, which is available at a base price of $19,765. Comparing the engine specs, the Ford Focus’ engine power and torque are just greater than the Impreza by 8 hp and 1 lbs.-ft. respectively. However, the pick-up of Ford Focus is much impressive along with its higher fuel economy and lower annual emission than the Impreza. On the other side, despite having a lower price tag, the 2017 Subaru Impreza Hatchback has the better braking ability, higher ground clearance, and more spacious interiors as compared to the Focus Hatchback.

Subaru Impreza Hatchback vs Fiat 500L

The 500L Hatchback model of the Fiat also puts up a strong fight to the Impreza. With a dominating torque delivery of 184lbs.-ft., the acceleration and quarter time figures of 500L are pretty good. Moreover, the hatchback also has excellent cargo capacity and interior space. Still, the high MSRP of the Fiat 500L hatchback makes it a less preferred choice over the Subaru Impreza.

2017 Subaru Impreza Hatchback Final Verdict
