The Subaru Impreza has been the star of the reasonably priced family hatchback ever since its inception. Now in 2022 with the competition getting tougher, the Impreza still hasn't made a lot of changes to the car. The 2022 Subaru Impreza will have the same interior as last year. The number of safety features on offer which it carries over from 2021 still make us content about the safety of the car.

Expert Review, Pricing Analysis and Buying Guide

The hatchback comes back with the same 2.0-liter Boxer Inline-4 which is capable of putting out 152 hp and 145 lb-ft of torque. The hatchback has AWD as standard which is common from a car from Subaru. The rivals in the segment such as the Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla, and Hyundai Elantra GT offer FWD in their standard configuration. Does the 2021 Subaru Impreza Hatchback have what it takes to beat the competition? Let's check out.

2022 Subaru Impreza Hatchback Features

The 2022 Subaru Impreza Hatchback is available in four trims – Base, Premium, Sport, and Limited. All trims come with a Subaru special flat-four 2.0L boxer engine producing 152 HP and 145 lb.-ft. of torque. It comes with All-Wheel Drive as standard on all trims. The price range of the hatchback starts from $19,295 for the base trim and goes up to $26,395 for the top-end Limited trim. Which trim should you buy?

Since Subaru has a wide range of trims on offer with the Impreza, we will recommend buying the Sport trim because it gets Keyless access, a large 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system, and 18-inch alloy wheels. The Sport trim is also a crazy value for money proposition because you get all these upgrades over the Premium trim for a price bump of only $300.

Release Date

The upcoming 2022 Subaru Impreza is expected to launch sometime later this year or maybe at the beginning of 2022.

2022 Subaru Impreza Hatchback Engine and Performance

The 2022 Subaru Impreza Hatchback gets a 2.0L flat-four boxer motor under the hood. The motor is naturally aspirated and comes with 16 valves and a Dual Active Valve Control system. The engine is mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox and produces 152 horses and 145 lb. ft. of torque. Some of the trims do come with CVT in their standard configuration while others have it as an option.

The power of the engine is adequate, and the acceleration is respectable for a hatchback. The engine has enough juice to cruise at triple-digit speeds on the highway comfortably, and still be able to execute quick overtakes. The gearbox is smooth and precise. The torque on offer is also ample, though not the best in class. Overall, it gets a decent powertrain. The hatchback fails in the acceleration tests as it takes 9 and 16.6 seconds for 0-60 mph and quarter-mile, respectively.

When talking about ride and handling, the Subaru Impreza is stable on road at high speeds in a straight line. It feels rock-solid on the highway and cruises comfortably. The suspension is set up on the stiffer side but softens up with speed and completely irons out all the road undulations. However, it does get caught out on the nastier bumps. As a result, the ride quality is not very comfortable, but nothing to complain about. The Impreza controls body roll very well and flies through the corners with ease.

The Honda Civic is miles ahead in the performance department. Accelerating to 60 MPH in just 7.1 seconds, it is a whole second quicker than the Toyota Corolla and two seconds faster than the Subaru. It also leaves the others behind in the quarter-mile run. The Hyundai gets the highest top speed though, at 134 MPH, while the Toyota manages to do only a 112. When comparing the price tag, the Honda Civic is the most expensive option available.

2022 Subaru Impreza Hatchback Fuel Economy

In terms of fuel economy, the Subaru is disappointing. It offers only 24 MPG in the city, while it manages to extract only 31 MPG on the highway, even though it produces the least amount of power and torque amongst the rivals. The lower fuel economy is most likely a side-effect of the Boxer flat-four engine setup. It gets a 13.2-gallon fuel tank, which means that it gets a range of 317 miles in the city and 409 miles on the highway.

The Toyota offers the best fuel efficiency figures at 32 MPG in the city, 41 MPG on the highway, and 35 MPG combined. The Civic, despite making more power and more torque than the rest, provides more gas mileage. However, the Toyota Corolla offers the best mileage out of all the cars here, and it becomes more surprising because the Corolla weighs more than the Subaru. The Hyundai also offers better mileage than the Subaru. When comparing the overall range, again the Toyota is the best option at 462 miles combined.

2022 Subaru Impreza Hatchback Interior

The Subaru Impreza feels good and upmarket on the inside and uses soft-touch materials generously. The upper dash is covered with soft-touch materials and also the door panels. The lower dash gets sturdy and tough and has hard plastics that feel durable. The seats are comfortable and soft and also provide good support. The seats come with aggressive side bolstering. The seats are 6-way manually adjustable for the driver and 4-way manually adjustable for the front passenger. Front and rear headroom, legroom, and shoulder room are great, with even 6 footers seating comfortably.

The Base and Premium trim gets cloth upholstery, while the Sport trim gets Spot Cloth upholstery with contrast Red Stitching. The Limited trim gets a 6-way power-adjustable driver’s seat with leather upholstery and automatic climate control. There is an all-weather package that can be added to the Premium and higher trims, which adds heated front seats. The hatchback has a cargo capacity of 20.8 cubic feet, which is decent for the segment it competes in.

The Subaru offers the maximum space on the inside, both in the front and the rear rows. The Toyota Corolla stays behind in this department as it has the least legroom in both rows. The hatchback from Toyota also offers the least amount of headroom in the first row. The Hyundai offers the maximum cargo space, whereas the Toyota has the least space at 17.8 cubic feet. All the hatchbacks can seat 5 people, which is the segment's standard. Standout interior features include:

  • Leather seats in Limited Trim
  • Automatic climate control in Limited Trim
  • Leather-wrapped steering wheel in Sport Trim
  • 6-way manually adjustable driver’s seat
  • Available power moonroof

What’s there to keep you entertained?

The 2022 Subaru Impreza Hatchback gets a 6.5-inch StarLink infotainment system as standard from the base trim. The resolution is good with ample visibility under bright sunlight. It gets both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard. The SiriusXM satellite radio is also present along with CD, AUX, FM, and AM functionality. The Sport and higher trims get an 8.0-inch system. The system supports navigation and voice commands.

The Limited trim comes with an optional StarLink Multimedia system which also adds Sirius Travel Link. The Impreza gets a very average 4-speaker sound system in the base trim. The Premium trim gets a 6-speaker system. There is an optional 8-speaker Harman Kardon sound system with a 432-watt amplifier, which is available for only $647. Standout infotainment features include:

  • 6.5 or 8-inch touchscreen infotainment screen
  • Apple CarPlay and Android
  • SiriusXM satellite radio
  • 4 or 6-speaker sound system
  • Navigation system
  • Optional 8-speaker Harman Kardon sound system

2022 Subaru Impreza Hatchback Exterior

The 2022 Subaru Impreza was expected to be completely redesigned. But to a great disappointment, the 2022 Subaru Impreza is a carry-over model. There are minimal changes to the exterior. The Subaru Impreza looks pretty sporty for a small hatchback, but thankfully, nothing is overdone. The front fascia with the sleek headlamps looks aggressive. The side profile with the sharp cuts and creases is pleasing to look at, and the tail end with the LED tail lamps looks subtle.

The Impreza gets 16” wheels on the base and premium trim, 18” wheels on the Sport trim, and 17” wheels on the Limited trim. You can get a set of STI 18” wheels for $1,599. The Limited trim comes with a unique set of LED headlamps, which respond to steering inputs. Subaru calls it the SRH, which stands for Steering Responsive Headlights. The Impreza comes with roof rails as standard. The Premium trim gets some jacked-up roof rails. There is an optional moonroof package that costs $2,470 on Limited trim and $1,970 on the Premium trim.

The sedans in the competition are not far away from each other when it comes to exterior dimensions. The Toyota Corolla is 2 lbs heavier than Subaru at 3060 lbs. When comparing the wheelbase of the hatchbacks in the competition, the Honda Civic has the longest at 106.3 inches, which must be of great help in offering better spacing for the passengers inside. Standout exterior features include:

  • Steering Responsive LED headlights on Limited Trim
  • LED DRLs
  • Roof Rails
  • Optional Moonroof package
  • 16”, 17” or 18” wheels

2022 Subaru Impreza Hatchback Safety

The IIHS has given the 2021 Subaru Impreza, the prestigious Top Safety Pick Plus award. It gets good scores in every aspect. The NHTSA gave the 2021 Subaru Impreza a full 5 stars in the terms of safety. As the 2022 MY is a carry-over model, we can safely assume that the same safety ratings will be applicable. It gets Subaru Eyesight driver assist technology which offers features like a Pre-collision braking system, lane-departure warning, sway warning, and lane-keep assist.

It also gets Automatic Emergency Braking along with pedestrian detection. This system is standard on all trims except the base trim. In the base trim, it is an optional extra. The Subaru Impreza gets disc brakes on all four wheels. At the front, it gets 10.9-inch rotors while at the back it gets 10.8-inch rotors. The brakes are hooked up with ABS, Brake Assist, and a Brake Override system. The brake assist system identifies panic braking with the help of sensors and applies maximum braking power immediately. It further makes sure that the passenger will be safe inside. Standout safety features include:

  • Brake assist
  • Traction control
  • Automatic high-beam headlights
  • Brake override system
  • Forward and reverse automatic emergency braking
  • Blind-spot monitoring (optional on premium and above)
  • Tire pressure monitoring system
  • Rear-view camera
  • 7 airbags
  • LATCH
  • Whiplash protection front seats

2022 Subaru Impreza Hatchback Competition

2022 Subaru Impreza Hatchback vs 2021 Honda Civic Hatchback

The 2021 Honda Civic is a great fun-to-drive hatchback and is truly a gem in the handling department. It will definitely plaster a smile on your face in twisty sections of the road. It is also better in performance than the Subaru and is also more fuel-efficient. The interiors also feel more premium than the Subaru, and it also gets more bells and whistles than the Subaru, and that too at a similar price point. So, the Honda Civic would be the wiser choice here.

2022 Subaru Impreza Hatchback vs 2021 Toyota Corolla Hatchback

The Toyota Corolla may produce more power than the Subaru, but in the fun-to-drive factor, the Subaru excels. The Corolla also returns remarkable fuel efficiency, but the Corolla is not very spacious on the inside and gets an impractical small trunk. On the styling front too, the Subaru is miles ahead of the Corolla. The Subaru is more spacious, and the interior fit and finish are also better than the Toyota. And even with all-wheel-drive as standard, the Subaru costs $1,000 lesser than the Toyota. So the Subaru is more value for money and the absolute winner here.

2022 Subaru Impreza Hatchback vs 2021 Hyundai Elantra GT Hatchback

The Hyundai Elantra GT is more powerful as well as more fuel-efficient than the Subaru Impreza. The Hyundai also gets all the bells and whistles and feels premium and upmarket on the inside. The interiors on the Hyundai are so good that they wouldn’t feel out of place even in a car from a segment or two above the Elantra. Overall, more performance, more fuel efficiency, and top-notch fit and finish make the Hyundai the winner here.

2022 Subaru Impreza Hatchback Final Verdict

The 2022 Subaru Impreza Hatchback is a tempting package with all-wheel drive as standard, premium sporty interiors with contrast red stitching, and a legendary flat-four boxer engine. The price point at which it comes makes the Impreza astounding value for money offer. The Impreza also gets remarkable safety ratings. The hatchback also has excellent resale value, and that legendary boxer engine, though low on power and not the best in fuel efficiency, is very robust and will definitely run for a few decades. All these make the Impreza a brilliant investment and earns an absolute buy recommendation.
