The Subaru WRX is one of those machines purely focused on the driving experience. However, the brand never cared about improving certain aspects where it actually failed in the competition. But no more as finally, the 2022 Subaru WRX is coming back with more competing aesthetics and style.

Since its inception, the brand only focussed on making it a powerful machine with the magic of WRC sprinkled all over it. Despite lacking comfort, it has sold over 164,000 units just in the U.S. and Canada. This is impressive and explains why it is loved by the fans.

In the beginning, the rivalry with the Mitsubishi EVO made Subaru push WRX to the extremes, but after a few years Mitsubishi left, and the Ford Focus RS arrived on the scene, then Volkswagen Golf. But these machines came and went. WRX on the other hand is still here.

In fact, right now the Subaru WRX is a vehicle that holds the spirit of WRC at its core. Being one of a kind surely helps, but not when buyers want more than just power, so this is the reason why it rivals machines such as the Nissan Altima, the Volkswagen Jetta, and the Kia Stinger.

2022 Subaru WRX Features

We are a bit skeptical while writing about the 2022 Subaru WRX as on the first hand the vehicle has not been completely confirmed. Some have speculated a new design revealed through various spy shots, which seem more bold and sporty. The 2022 Subaru WRX is going for a complete overhaul, however, we speculate the trims will remain unchanged for the year.

The upcoming Subaru WRX can be offered in 3 trim levels, namely - Base, Premium, and Limited. All these 3 trims are also part of the 2021 Subaru WRX and have a price variation of $2500. The trims are easily identifiable to each other in terms of exterior and mechanical outfit and only differ on the basis of available features and amenities.

We Recommend

As the 2022 Subaru WRX will be totally new for the upcoming year we can hold on to this decision until all features, trims, prices, and mechanical features are officially confirmed. Next up is the increment in dimensions and it will be based on a new platform i.e. Subaru Global Platform Modular architecture. The interior might also be going to get a redesign and finally, it is rumored to have a more powerful engine.

Price

For now, there is no information available regarding the pricing of the 2022 Subaru WRX. However, as per global trends, you can expect an increase in price ranging from $1000 to $2000 for the upcoming 2022 Subaru WRX. The Subaru WRX STI on the other hand might go around $40,000.

Release Date

Currently, there is no official release date available for the 2022 Subaru WRX. But we expect it to come out in the market in fall 2021. The WRX STI on the other hand will probably come in the second quarter of 2022.

2022 Subaru WRX Engine and Performance

The 2022 Subaru WRX is rumored to have a new engine configuration that is going to replace the trusty old 2.0 Liter Turbo Flat-4 engine. There are high chances of WRX getting a 2.4 Liter Turbocharged Flat-4 engine which is already shared by Subaru Outback and Ascent. Those are crossovers and while shifting to a compact sports car, the company will have to perfectly fine-tune the new boxer engine.

The upcoming engine is expected to have 285 horsepower and a torque of 303 lb-ft. This will be a huge improvement over the current 268 horsepower Flat-4 engine with 258 lb-ft of torque. When it comes to the WRX STi, expect an even more powerful engine that will top at 400 horsepower. Subaru’s popular all-wheel-drive system is still going to be there.

The power to wheels will be sent through a continuously variable-speed automatic transmission. Don't worry, the fan-favorite 6-speed manual will also be available to choose from. However, there are rumors that the people of Japan will only get CVT which will be a bummer if it comes true.

2022 Subaru WRX Sedan

Honestly, we would always go for the manual transmission as that is where the true feeling of WRC lies. WRX launches like a rocket while flooring the pedal. It can go from 0-60 mph in just 5.2 seconds and finishes the quarter-mile in 14 seconds. These timings are mind-boggling.

As the car dynamics, the engine purrs beautifully when throttled. We have already mentioned how good flooring the pedal feels. But the core strength of Subaru is the all-wheel-drive system.

The WRC-like handling is surely going to put a smile on your face. The suspension feels fairly good however it might get a bit uncomfortable on the bumpy track. So now you know why comfort was never a strong area for WRX. But with the new platform for WRX and improvements in the whole car. It is easier to expect a better level of comfort while driving.

When compared to its rivals, the current version of WRX is already more than enough to win over its rivals. But if the rumored engine with stats comes true, then the next WRX will decimate its rivals in the market without any struggle.

2022 Subaru WRX Fuel Economy

8.0/10

Until now, WRX always suffered from having a bad fuel economy. It is very easy to blame the power-hungry boxer engine. Yes, we can argue that it is fair, after all, whoever is going to buy a Subaru WRX is purely getting it for the extreme driving experience. So the chances are those people won’t even mind the bad to average fuel economy.

But we cannot forget about those buyers who do like to have a balanced experience with decent mileage. For now, there is no information regarding fuel economy related to the 2022 Subaru WRX. We can only expect it to have better stats. The 15.9-gallon fuel tank capacity might stay the same. But the mileage and driving range will improve or not, only time will tell.

Since there are stats available for the 2022 Subaru WRX’s fuel economy, we can’t compare it with its rivals. Usually, this is where Subaru falls behind the other vehicles in its competition. Kia Stinger offers a perfect balance of performance with fuel economy.

2022 Subaru WRX Interior

8.0/10

The Subaru WRX falls behind when it comes to the interior with the competition offering better interior design. But we think that is going to change. As the 2022 Subaru WRX is rumored to have a newly redesigned interior. But for now, there is no official information regarding what will be loaded inside. So we can only speculate.

However, we believe the upcoming WRX will have a better interior; expect improvement in material quality. Chances are that the new interior design will look a lot similar to the new Outback. The whole dashboard needs a major swap for the upcoming model, and we expect it to have a more visually pleasing unit with a bigger infotainment touchscreen. It might also get unique sporty seats.

In fact, the whole inside of the cabin might get a sportier stitched leather interior. We would love to have a driver eccentric dashboard, but these are all just speculations. The cabin size on the other hand has always been one of the biggest in its class. But even that is going to get better. We just hope that the Subaru better not compromises the excellent visibility through the windshield.

2022 Subaru WRX Sedan infotainment screen

The current model has poor noise isolation, which is impossible to tolerate especially at higher speed, so we expect the next version with improvements over that. Since there is no data available related to the exact change in interior dimensions, we cannot really compare it with its rivals. But one thing is sure it was already ahead of its rivals when it comes to space, so bigger dimensions are going to keep it in front of the line.

Some modern comfort features in the Subaru WRX are:

  • 6-way manually adjustable driver's seat
  • Performance-design front seats
  • 60/40-split flat-folding rear seatback
  • Leather-wrapped flat-bottomed steering wheel with red stitching
  • Aluminum-alloy pedal covers

How intuitive is the Infotainment system of the 2022 Subaru WRX?

Talking about the infotainment system of Subaru WRX, there are many hi-tech features that you usually see in modern-day cars but you will miss some features like smartphone-like gesture control, wireless charging, or a hi-fi surround sound system. Moreover, you will also miss a high resolution touchscreen that is smart and playful at the same time. It is just a simple yet useful infotainment with the below features:

  • 8 inch Touchscreen
  • 6 speakers
  • Stand-alone navigation mirroring app
  • Steering-wheel mounted audio controls
  • STARLINK smart device integration
  • Apple CarPlay
  • Android Auto
  • Radio data system
  • SiriusXM AM/FM/HD/Satellite with seek-scan, single in-dash CD player
  • Speed-sensitive volume

2022 Subaru WRX Exterior

6.0/10

Finally, after years of waiting, the 2022 Subaru WRX is getting a redesign. The fire spread insanely fast when spy shots were found over the internet. Some have even rendered the images to guess how the upcoming Subaru might look like. We must say it’s looking beautifully rare. Let’s start with the front, the new hexagonal grille has a chrome bar in the middle with an embedded Subaru logo on it.

On both sides are the newly designed sharp eye-like headlights with body curves stabbing them inwards. It is really impressive and needs praise from whoever came with this design. The lower front bumper feels like a mirror of the top unit with a trapezoidal-shaped mid vent directly below the main grille. Two side vents are placed seamlessly on both sides with fog lamps.

On the top of the front bumper is the hood with an air scoop feeding the intercooler of the turbocharged engine. Then comes the sides, new fenders have been designed, especially the rear fenders which come a lot more outward than the current version. Not sure how we feel about that but let’s see what ends up in the final version.

The side mirrors are attached to the doors instead of the A-pillars. Lastly, the rear is again a different design than the current WRX. It feels more sporty thanks to the new taillights and the increased trunk height. Below you will find a newly designed rear bumper with four exhaust tips ready to impress the crowd.

Overall this new design looks fabulous, it surely provides a much more beefy look. And yes it got an increment in dimensions making it the biggest WRX yet. We don't know how that will contribute to the performance of the machine but it will surely increase the volume of the cabin and trunk. We don't know the exact numbers but expect one of the biggest in its class. For now, there is no detail available regarding exterior features but if previous features are continued then the following will make to the list.

  • 17 inch alloys
  • Projector low-beam and multi-reflector high-beam halogen headlights
  • Front and rear under spoilers
  • Rear bumper with integrated diffuser
  • Trunk spoiler - low profile
  • Exhaust system with quad stainless-steel outlets
  • Body-color power side mirrors

2022 Subaru WRX Safety

8.0/10

Subaru has certainly improved their vehicles when it comes to safety. WRX is a prime example of that. The previous 2021 Subaru WRX has received a full five-star rating by the NHTSA and received the maximum possible rating of ‘good’ by the IIHS. It has also received the ‘Top Safety Pick award from the IIHS. We expect the same level of quality and safety from the 2022 WRX.

The current version is already loaded with Subaru’s Eyesight system which includes various safety features. So expect optional features in the current version such as blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, forward collision avoidance, lane departure warning, and prevention system to turn into standard features in the upcoming model.

  • Lane Departure warning
  • Traction Control System (TCS)
  • Brake Assist
  • 4-wheel anti-lock braking system (ABS)
  • Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS)
  • Daytime Running Lights (DRL)
  • Whiplash protection front seats with height-adjustable head restraints
  • Forward collision avoidance system

2022 Subaru WRX Competition

9.0/10

2022 Subaru WRX vs 2021 Nissan Altima VC-T SR

For now, we can only say that Subaru WRX will win over the Nissan Altima by having more power. Because in the other sections the current version of WRX falls behind especially in terms of fuel economy where Altima takes the crown home. WRX also offers better driving dynamics and handling than Nissan.

2021 Nissan Altima VC-T SR

2022 Subaru WRX vs 2021 Volkswagen Jetta GLI

Volkswagen Jetta GLI might get the upper hand here by having better fuel economy, but Subaru will surely offer the unmatched amazing driving experience. WRX offers more power tap and it might return with an optional 6-speed manual much loved by enthusiasts.

2021 Volkswagen Jetta GLI

2022 Subaru WRX vs 2022 Kia Stinger

Yes, the new design trunk of the WRX might offer more cargo capacity but we don't think it will be as much as what the Kia Stinger offers. On the other hand, WRX will offer a more spacious cabin and performance. The new Stinger offers more power, torque and yet does not compromise on fuel efficiency. Between the two it is a tough choice.

2022 Kia Stinger

2022 Subaru WRX Final Verdict

The Subaru WRX is a machine loved by its fans. But it seems with changes in the upcoming 2022 WRX. The company is finally bringing something which is not only going to excite its fans but also going to attract some new crowd; especially the ones who always ignored Subaru for not having a comfortable cabin with an appealing interior. With such changes, the future of WRX seems very bright. Even if many of the above-mentioned details are speculated still we believe Subaru will return with a bang.
