The Tesla Model S is for the ones who want both performance and economy under one roof. The Model S has been offered by Tesla since 2012 as an executive EV. The long-range models became quite popular which led to the discontinuation of the entry-level models. In the segment, the Model S offers the highest driving range.

Tesla introduced advanced tech with its cars that left the whole car industry in a dilemma. With its massive infotainment display, an airplane-like cockpit with autopilot driving assistance, the Model S was the most advanced car in America. For the 2022 MY, it is back with new options and an updated design. The changes are made to the hardware and the exterior.

The much-awaited Plaid+ trim is coming with greater performance to replace the ongoing Performance trim. Previously, the Model S had a dual-motor powertrain whereas now it offers a tri-motor setup with dual rear motors, one for each wheel, and a single motor at the front making it an AWD vehicle.

The main difference between all the available three trims is highlighted in their power and performance. The Long Range trim, which starts at $78,490, has a higher 412-mile range but remains behind in terms of performance. Whereas, the Model S Plaid and the Plaid+ are made for better performance with 0-60 times of just under 2 seconds.

We Recommend:

All the Tesla Model S trims get the best features available in the industry. The pricing is, however, too aggressive, and to the fact that it is almost double when you compare it with the base trim. As aforementioned, the base trim Long Range offers 412 miles of long-range, and if you are looking for efficiency rather than power then it can be a choice worth $78,490.

2022 Tesla Model S Price

The Tesla Model S is generally offered at a higher price being an executive car. The price for the 2022 MY will be hiked as well. The base Long-range trim will be available at a price of $78,490. For the Plaid trim, you will have to pay at least $118,490. The Plaid+ trim with its extraordinary performance and mile range will cost you close to $148,490. The base trim gets optional features whereas the Autonomous driving is not standard and you'll have to pay a few more bucks. However, you get potential electric vehicle incentives of up to $5,500.

2022 Tesla Model S Release date

The 2022 Tesla Model S is currently under production and is available for bookings on the official website. If you order the dual-motor long-range trim, you will get it within a few months. For the tri-motor trims, the Plaid version will take a longer period for delivery. The top of the line Plaid+ trim will test your patience as it will be available for you in the midst of 2022. It means you have a long year ahead until you get your hands on the high-performance Model S.

2022 Tesla Model S electric Engine and Performance

The powertrain of the Tesla Model S has changed over time. Previously, the Model S was offered with the dual-motor setup, one for each axle. The base long-range trim will retain the dual-motor AWD configuration whereas the Plaid and Plaid+ trims get a tri-motor setup with dual motors for the rear axle that powers individual wheels and a single front axle motor.

The base long-range trim has 670hp all-electric power through its dual motors and a torque output of 723lb-ft. The Plaid trim outputs a crazy 1,020hp of peak power from its tri-motor setup. If that doesn't satisfy you, you can choose the Tesla Roadster equivalent trim, the Plaid+ with more than 1,100hp power output.

2022 Tesla Model S electric Sedan in motion

The long-range trim of the Model S is capable of sprinting from 0 to 60 MPH in just 3.1 seconds and can cover a quarter-mile in 10.4 seconds. The Plaid trim takes the lead with its record launch of 1.9 seconds from 0-60 MPH and takes 8.4 seconds for a quarter-mile run. The top of the line Plaid+ has unbelievable performance where it can attain 60 MPH speed in less than 2 seconds with a quarter-mile timing of 8.0 seconds.

The Model S is way more capable than its rivals, the Taycan 4S. With its base engine, the vehicle has 670hp of peak power where the Taycan 4S has just 563hp of power. Also, the top trim outputs 1100hp of power where the Taycan is limited to 750hp. The price has a significant difference which makes the Tesla Model S a better value for money.

If we talk about the other rivals, the Audi E-Tron has a maximum power output of 469 hp. The rumored RS version will offer greater power up to 700hp. The closest competition to the Model S is the Lucid Air Pure with its base power of 480 hp which goes all the way up to 1,080hp for its top trim level which will cost you more than the Plaid+.

2022 Tesla Model S electric Exterior

9.0/10

Tesla has a simple and clear design statement across its lineup of cars. The aerodynamic design is tested multiple times to provide the lowest drag coefficient ever; thanks to its rigid body structure and a low center of gravity. The weight is properly distributed on the chassis with the widest wheelbase in its class. The Model S is the sleekest production electric car. For 2022 MY, the design is quite different from the actual Model S that has been around for a while now. The mid-cycle refresh has noteworthy upgrades. The design lines somehow seem sharper and the sloping roof design is now better than ever.

2022 Tesla Model S electric Sedan

The front fascia is updated with fresh-looking bumpers and thinner LED headlamps. The front grille is now wafer-thin. The Model S has ditched the massive bumper air vents with a smaller vent and sleek fog lamps. The rear fascia gets new tail lamps as well. With the new 19 inch wheels, the Model S is the best-looking electric sedan.

2022 Tesla Model S electric Safety

6.0/10

Since the beginning, the Tesla Model S has been crafted with high strength steel structure from the ground up. The lightweight platform of the Model S has rigid construction. The battery pack is mounted in the floor bed conveniently to balance the weight. The low center of gravity ensures less rollover risk. The structure is made to protect you from collisions that can occur from any side. You have crumple zones to disperse the impact force. In terms of active safety, the 2022 Model S will offer advanced safety features just like the ongoing model. You have standard safety such as forward collision warning, blind-spot monitoring, lane departure warning, and whatnot.

Autonomous driving can detect signs and pedestrians around the vehicle. The system activates in advance with the pre-collision safety system. With 8 standard airbags, the cabin is properly protected. It has not been tested by the NHTSA because it is expensive. The IIHS ratings for the 2021 Model S are available only for headlights and front crash prevention. We don't have such safety ratings to refer to and the same will be the case for the 2022 Model S. Some of the safety features in the Tesla Model S are:

  • Sentry Mode
  • Require Manual entry
  • Attention Assist
  • Radar Cruise Control

2022 Tesla Model S vs 2022 Audi E-Tron GT

The Tesla Model S offers the longest range and amazing power output. The Audi E-Tron GT is a new entry in the segment which has to go a long way to match Tesla. However, it has a lavish cabin, numerous features, and a better luxury electric vehicle experience. The Model S seems simple as compared to the E-Tron GT until Tesla unleashes its power.

2022 Audi E-Tron GT

2022 Tesla Model S vs 2022 Lucid Air Pure

Tesla has a nice clientele as the Model S has sold 100,000 units already. Competing with it is the Lucid Air which is a whole new concept in the electric vehicle segment. The Lucid Air seems promising with its Tesla-like driving range and performance numbers. Still, the Model S is slightly ahead. But Tesla should expect fierce competition.

2022 Tesla Model S electric Final Verdict

The Tesla Model S was introduced as a full-size electric sedan a few years back when EVs weren't cool. Even after years, it is one of the most loved electric vehicles in the industry for its luxury comfort, dynamics, features, and performance. For 2022, Tesla has bigger plans for the Model S with Plaid trim levels which is capable of taking down hypercars with its 1,100hp of power. The Model S is updated all the way for the very first time.
