Expert Review, Pricing Analysis and Buying Guide

Earlier this year, Tesla revealed the redesigned Model S which went on to steal all the headlines for its entirely revamped interior that now looks more like an Airplane cockpit, although no major changes could be noticed on the exterior. Besides the regular variant of the Model S, we have two new powerful Plaid and Plaid+ versions, of which the Plaid+ is shelved off even before seeing the light. Despite that, the Plaid would still be the fastest production car ever. The 2022 Tesla Model S would compete with the German hotshots, Porsche Taycan 4S, and Mercedes-Benz EQS.

2022 Tesla Model S Plaid Sedan Features

The typical refresh game isn’t just limited to the design aspects but also for its trim levels. The Model S lineup is completely revamped, bringing in another model called Plaid. Both of these variants come packed with a lot of features in every corner. The entry-level Long Range variant has standard features like all-door remote keyless entry, yoke-shaped heated steering wheel, Dual-zone Climate control, 17-inch cinematic infotainment/utility screen, and LED Fog lamps to name a few.

The Plaid turns out to be the true flagship after the CEO of Tesla called off the Plaid+ version. Nonetheless, Plaid is an excellent choice for performance enthusiasts as it offers an exceptional power on the road which would be discussed in the later sections of the review, Hold on. The Plaid variant adds up all the features of the base trim and adds on some more cool features like the Trizone Climate Control, Ambient lighting, ventilated front seats, and a mammoth 22-speaker sound system. And of course, there are plenty of wireless charging pads as standard.

We recommend

We recommend opting for the entry-level Long Range model as it offers a massive range of 412 miles and a staggering performance which would complement your daily needs to a major extent and potentially save you a 50 grand. If all that you seek is a blazing performance, then Plaid would absolutely do that for you.

Release date

Tesla started accepting the orders for the all-new 2022 Model S Plaid and aims to deliver the same starting this fall. Orders can be placed directly from the official Tesla website.

2022 Tesla Model S Plaid Sedan Engine and Performance

The 2022 Tesla Model S fleet is powered by two different powertrains that offer insane power and brisk acceleration. The Long Range is fueled with a Dual-Motor setup where a motor is integrated with both the rear and front axles accounting for a more efficient All-Wheel-Drive. This setup generates 670 horses of power, controlled by a single-speed direct-drive transmission.

2022 Tesla Model S Plaid Sedan With Superfast Acceleration

The high-performance Plaid model sports a Tri-Motor setup where the rear axle is now coupled with two motors producing a whopping 1,020 horsepower which would be delivered to all of the wheels via a single-speed transmission. The Long Range model makes a 0-60 MPH run in 3.1 seconds, attaining a top speed of 155 mph. The Plaid, on the other hand, can fly through the 60 MPH mark in a smashing 1.9 seconds.

In comparison, both the Porsche Taycan 4S and Mercedes-Benz EQS are powered by a pair of motors at either of the axles, effectively making them All-Wheel-Drive cars. But they don’t make enough power when compared to the Model S which costs 20 grand less. The Taycan 4S makes a 0-60 sprint in 3.9 seconds while the Mercedes EQS needs 4.1 seconds to do the same. In collation, the Model S seems to be a great bang for the buck in every dimension.

2022 Tesla Model S Plaid Sedan Fuel Economy

The Tesla Model S lineup offers an unrivaled MPGE (Miles per Gallon Equivalent) figure while exhibiting an intense performance. Due to its improved aerodynamics and regenerative braking system, the Model S turns out to be more efficient on the bustling city streets that demand frequent halts. It offers 114 MPGE in the city, 106 MPGE on the highways, and 110 MPGE in the combined use case. It is equipped with a 100kWh battery pack, good enough for 412 miles of range. The Plaid model offers a range of 390 miles on a single charge.

In contrast, the Porsche Taycan 4S has a total range of 260 miles which is substantially lower than the competition. While the official MPGE figures of the Mercedes-Benz EQS aren’t out, speculation has been made that it offers a massive range of 478 miles which would turn out to be a powerful contender for the Model S.

2022 Tesla Model S Plaid Sedan Interior

The interior of the Tesla Model S is heavily revamped while sustaining its core idea of minimalism. It now feels more like a cockpit that's ready to take off unlike other cars with too many control knobs mounted until the center part of the dash. The previously portrait-oriented infotainment/control screen in the center is now landscaped with a much more responsive and crisp display.

2022 Tesla Model S Plaid Sedan Dashboard

We have an all-new “yoke” shaped steering wheel that enables more visibility of the driver information screen and feels like you’re driving a race car. Moving on from the tech part, we have a beautifully crafted sleek dash with leather and real-wood accents passing all through the cabin. The cabin is now more spacious than its predecessor which could accommodate 5 large-sized adults with ease.

Seating Capacity

Front (Headroom/Shoulder Room/Leg Room, in inches)

Rear (Headroom/Shoulder Room/Leg Room, in inches)

Cargo Volume (cubic feet)

In comparison, the Porsche Taycan 4S can seat 4 people with a slightly cramped rear room. Also, the seats in the Model S are very comfortable with standard leatherette where the front and rear passengers enjoy ventilated options too, which isn’t the case with the Taycan 4S where the technology is limited to the front seats only. While we don’t have the exact dimensions/figures of the EQS, we expect a practical and comfortable cabin experience from Mercedes-Benz. Some of the noteworthy interior features of the 2022 Tesla Model S include:

  • Heated steering wheel
  • HEPA Air-filtration
  • Dual-zone Climate Control and Tri-zone in Plaid
  • Leatherette seats
  • 12.3-inch Driver information display
  • Heated seats
  • Driver Lumbar Support

How intuitive is the 2022 Tesla Model S Plaid’s Infotainment System?

Just like its practical interior approach, Tesla has re-imagined the way people conceive entertainment. It has a massive 17-inch touch screen integrated with all sorts of infotainment options right from web browsing to high-quality video streaming that sits in the center of the dash.

2022 Tesla Model S Plaid Sedan Infotainment System

Surprisingly in the rear, we have a small screen that enables in-car gaming with up to 10 teraflops of processing power. To complement that, we have a 22-speaker surround sound system that offers an immersive experience. And yeah, it has Active Noise Cancellation too. Splendid isn’t it? Highlights of the 2022 Tesla Model S infotainment include:

  • A 17-inch touchscreen with all controls, internet, and infotainment system
  • A rear screen that enables in-car gaming
  • 22-speaker sound system with ANC
  • Multi-device Bluetooth connection
  • Wireless/USB-C charging for every customer

2022 Tesla Model S Plaid Sedan Exterior

Though Tesla claims that they overhauled the exterior, one cannot really notice major changes at the first stance. It is because most of the design changes were mere technical refinements to improve aerodynamics and body weight control. The hood is made sleeker with sharp contour lines that make the Model S more appealing and hot. The rear and front bumpers are toned down for a more aggressive posture with narrow vents and grille.

The 2022 iteration with these minor tweaks could account for some big performance changes. The Tesla Model S has the lowest drag coefficient which means that it offers more efficiency and slick movement around sharp corners. It comes equipped with redesigned 19-inch performance-focused wheels that offer more agility and traction.

In terms of design, both the Porsche Taycan 4S and Merced-Benz EQS have a dynamic and aesthetic appeal to them. But Porsche’s design is much more compact and lighter with a classic Porsche aura. On the other hand, the EQS looks aggressively electric and futuristic. But overall, the Model S looks more attractive and practical than the lot with its purposeful and timeless design. Highlights of 2022 Tesla Model S exterior include:

  • LED Headlamps
  • LED Fog Lamps
  • Rain Sensing wipers
  • Fixed Glass Sunroof all over the 1st and 2nd row
  • Infrared protection glasses
  • Tinted Gloss Roof
  • 19 or 21-inch wheels

2022 Tesla Model S Plaid Sedan Safety

Over the years, Tesla has been making comprehensive progress in terms of safety and driver-assistive tech. Perhaps, it is in another league with its Autonomous driving aids which were about to get a lot better with the Level 5 Autonomous Driving tech that would be made available by the end of 2021. Both of the Model S variants include Tesla’s latest active safety features as standard out of the box. Some of the notable features include:

  • Pre-Collision Safety System
  • Front Fog/Driving Lights
  • Adaptive LED Headlamps
  • Pedestrian Alert
  • Lane-Keep Assist
  • Lane Departure Monitoring/Warning System
  • Automatic Emergency Braking
  • Tire Pressure Monitoring
  • Blind-Spot Monitoring System
  • Anti Theft alarm
  • Engine Immobilizer
  • Front and Rear Ventilated Disk Brakes
  • Rear Door Child Safety Locks
  • Auto Lane Change
  • Autopark

2022 Tesla Model S Plaid Sedan Competition

2022 Tesla Model S Plaid vs Porsche Taycan 4S

There is no denying that the Tesla Model S and Porsche Taycan 4S are two High-Profile sedans, setting new standards in the EV segment. Porsche is definitely the best when it comes to the handling and driving dynamics but it lacks storage and comfort which the Model S offers in abundance.

Porsche Taycan 4S

Adding to that, the Model S is also a great value for money option as its base Long Range model costs 20 grand less than the Taycan 4S while offering 40 percent more range.

2022 Tesla Model S Plaid vs the 2022 Mercedes-Benz EQS

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz looks promising with its futuristic and ultra-modern styling that many of the EV enthusiasts are waiting for. As of now, we don’t know much about the technical attributes of this car, but Audi is making some huge claims regarding its range and performance, although none of them could match the eye-watering 1,100 hp produced by the Model S Plaid nor its 1.9-second acceleration mark.

2022 Mercedes-Benz EQS

However, we need to wait for some more months to see if Mercedes-Benz EQS can really live up to its hype and take a fair share of the market that's largely occupied by Tesla.

2022 Tesla Model S Plaid Sedan Final Verdict

Although it seems similar to the previous models, the performance and efficiency of this iteration are ground-breaking, and as Elon said, “it has to be felt to be believed”. To sum it up, the 2022 Tesla Model S Plaid is a magnificent and tech-packed flagship that would be a cognitive paradise for anyone who gets to experience it. It is phenomenal in every possible way that there are literally no flaws to show up.
