Come 2020 and Tesla has added another car to its portfolio, the Model Y. A compact crossover based on the Model 3 is Tesla's take on those customers who are ready to jump the ship from ICE-powered crossover to EV as up till now the compact crossover EV had been costing upwards of sixty and seventy grands making it almost inaccessible for the majority of the buyers. The 2020 Model Y starting at $49,990 could just be the right fit for them while the power-hungry folks can upgrade to the Performance version at just a ten grand premium.

2020 Tesla Model Y

The Model Y as of this writing is an AWD and uses two electric motors to put out healthy power and torque figures enough to propel the base Model Y from 0-60 mph in under five seconds while the Model Y Performance does the same in under four seconds. Being crossover practicality is also important and Model Y offers to seat five as standard which can be increased to seven with the third row. That said, let's find out in this review what else does this Tesla offers.

Expert Review, Pricing Analysis and Buying Guide

Overall Rating

The 2020 Tesla Model Y comes well equipped and packs in a lot of punch for its size and segment. The Model Y has an EPA estimated range of 316 miles for the Long Range version while the Performance version goes just 1 mile less. While all this is offered to you in a package for a price which is unbelievable. As for starters the closest rival of the Model Y, the Jaguar I-Pace is over twenty grand expensive and is neither as quick nor offers a longer range as the Model Y.

2020 Tesla Model Y Front View Driving

ICE-powered cars from BMW and Mercedes-Benz or all-electric Audi E-Tron can match Model Y's performance but still costs upwards of fifty grand. Except for a small compromise in terms of fit and finish levels and badge value, there is nothing which the Tesla Model Y isn't better at than the above cars. With that said, in this review, we will compare the Model Y with its closest rival Jaguar I-Pace, and try to understand how much value does this under fifty grand Tesla offers.

2020 Tesla Model Y electric Features

The 2020 Tesla Model Y is an all-new electric SUV from Tesla available in two trims Long Range and Performance. The first one starts below fifty grand while the latter costs ten grand more than the base model. The Long Range trim as the name suggests comes with most of the features as standard but with a focus towards getting longer range while the latter adds bigger wheels, lower suspension, and improves performance without much compromise on the range. Other than this there are two options available with the Model Y the first one being the full self-driving capability option and the second one being a Class II tow hitch for towing up to 3,500 pounds.

Long Range

Key Features

Dual electric motor with all-wheel-drive

19-inch alloy wheels

Increased performance with reduced range

12-way power-adjustable front seats

Performance-oriented brakes

14-speaker premium sound system

Lowered suspension

Adaptive cruise control

We Recommend

Going for either of the two trims solely depends on your personal choice and requirements. Except for the range and performance, there is hardly any major change in terms of features in both models. Thus if you prefer both power and efficiency then you can opt for the Performance version and if you like to travel long distances and performance is not your concern then you can opt for the Long Range trim.

2020 Tesla Model Y electric Engine and Performance

The 2020 Tesla Model Y gets two electric motors one at each axle delivering a combined 384 hp and 376 lb-ft of torque. The electric motor powers all four wheels of the car making the Model Y an AWD. The motors take their juice from a 75-kWh lithium-ion battery pack. Just like any other electric car, the transmission is a single-speed direct-drive transmission that does not shift between gears instead all the power is sent to the wheels at once and it is controlled by how hard you push your right foot. Both the Long Range and Performance versions do not shy out in terms of performance. The Model Y Long Range does 0-60 mph in 4.4 seconds, which is quite fast; the Performance version takes 3.5 seconds to reach 60 mph.

2020 Tesla Model Y Drivetrain

While the Model Y is based on the Model 3 sedan, it lacks the driving dynamics that we had in the Model 3. The increased weight and change in body style increase the center of gravity of the Model Y which in turn results in lesser agile handling. The braking on the Model Y Long Range at times feels sluggish. While the Performance trim comes with performance-oriented brakes which offer much better bite than the standard brakes. The stopping distance of the Model Y is not yet known, but the Model 3 stops in about 105 feet, and the Model Y is just slightly heavier than the Model 3 so there should not be a big difference between their stopping distances.

Jaguar I-Pace offers more power and torque but is slower to 60 than the Model Y. This can be understood from the fact that the I-Pace is more than 300 pounds heavier than the Model Y. That being said, the I-Pace is much more expensive than the Model Y with the base price close to the top end Model Y Performance trim.

2020 Tesla Model Y electric Fuel Economy

Unlike gasoline cars where you have miles per gallon, electric cars are rated in miles per gallon equivalent or MPGe. The 2020 Tesla Model Y has an EPA estimated city MPGe of 127 miles, on the highway you get 114 MPGe, and under mixed driving conditions, you can expect 121 MPGe. While with a full battery the 2020 Tesla Model Y has a range of 316 miles. While these are the figures for the Long Range model and if you plan to get the Model Y Performance then you can expect 129 MPGe in the city, 112 MPGe on the highway, 121 MPGe combined, and a range of 315 miles.

Tesla offers the most range thanks to the Long Range model while the Performance version offers only 1 mile less range. The Jaguar I-Pace being heavier and putting out more power and torque is at a disadvantage here and offers a much lower 234 miles from a full charge.

2020 Tesla Model Y electric Interior

The interior of the 2020 Tesla Model Y seems to be inspired mostly by the Model 3 sedan. In usual Tesla fashion, the cabin design is minimalistic with not many buttons and knobs, and most of the infotainment and other convenience and comfort features of the car are controlled by the large center touchscreen. There is no lack of space inside the cabin and no matter where you sit you will be comfortable.

For an additional cost of $3,000 you can add a third row of seating which increases the overall capacity to seven, but this option seems to be out of reach till next year. Tesla offers decent interior build quality and use of upscale materials which makes the cabin a nice place to be in and the all-glass roof which is heavily tinted to protect the occupants from excessive heat further adds to the airy feel of the cabin.

2020 Tesla Model Y Infotainment

As most of the Model Y is identical to the Model 3, the infotainment system also remains similar. Almost all of the vehicular functions are controlled by the large 15-inch touchscreen display placed in the center of the dash. The screen controls and displays everything from the climate control to the speedometer, and all of these functions come with complexity which makes the system a bit tough to get used to.

2020 Tesla Model Y Cargo

Apart from standard functions you also get a suite of entertainment features which include apps like Netflix, Youtube, Hulu, and some video games which help you pass time while waiting near a Tesla supercharger to juice up your ride. That said, these functions are disabled for the driver once the vehicle starts to move.

Cargo Capacity (ft³.)

Tesla takes the win in terms of interior space, as it offers the most amount of space for both the first and second row of passengers and also offers a third row of seating, with ample cargo space. Jaguar offers enough space up front but cuts off on rear legroom. Another thing worth noting in I-Pace is the smaller cargo space compared to the Model Y.

2020 Tesla Model Y electric Exterior

The Tesla Model 3 and Model Y have a lot in common and this stands true for their looks as well. From the front, you would take a while to differentiate between both cars. The headlights look like an inexpensive version inspired from Aston Martin cars, while the overall design looks like a more bulky Model 3 with smooth and aerodynamic lines. The door handles are also well crafted and almost remain hidden from plain sight when seen from the front.

2020 Tesla Model Y Side Three-Quarter View

But technically speaking the Model Y being an SUV should be considered as a smaller version of the Model X and the former's 187-inches length and wheelbase of 113.8-inches surely make that clear. As the Model X is more than 10-inches longer and offers 3-inches more in terms of wheelbase compared to the latter.

Model Y is lighter than the I-Pace but comes with a smaller wheelbase and width which surely hamper its ability to accommodate an adult-friendly third-row seat. But what's baffling is the fact that even though the I-Pace is wider and has a longer wheelbase compared to the Model Y it still isn't as spacious on the inside as the latter.

2020 Tesla Model Y electric Safety

Tesla is fairly new to the market but has managed to excel in terms of safety. All the cars from Tesla like the Model 3, Model X, and Model S have managed to secure top ratings from the safety institutions like NHTSA and IIHS. Model Y is no exception NHTSA gives it an overall rating of 5 stars and while IIHS has not tested the Model Y. There is no lack of safety features in the Model Y. Standard features like ABS, airbags, EBD, traction, and stability control are present in the car, and in addition to that, there is a slew of advanced safety and driver assistance features as well.

2020 Tesla Model Y electric Competition

2020 Tesla Model Y vs 2020 Jaguar I-Pace

The 2020 Jaguar I-Pace costs way more than Tesla Model Y and still fails to match the list of features, performance on offer, or for that matter the range. Apart from that the bigger in dimension I-Pace isn't as spacious inside as the Model Y and neither it offers the option of third-row seating which the Tesla gets.

2020 Jaguar I-Pace

However you get a car from a well-reputed brand, and as Tesla is fairly new there is still no say on how reliable it is, and the build quality remains questionable, whereas Jaguar offers a premium cabin and excellent build quality.

2020 Tesla Model Y electric Final Verdict

Model Y comes as the first compact crossover SUV from Tesla and is basically a Model 3 in an SUV body. It offers an exceptional range, a long list of high-tech features, and safety features with excellent safety ratings. The Long Range model available to buy now is a bit expensive although a more affordable model is set to come out in the coming time, still, the Model Y is the best choice to go for in the scarcely rivaled segment where the closest rival Jaguar I-Pace's base trim is twenty grand expensive than Model Y's base trim.
