conservative looking midsize sedan

Pros - Elegant yet straightforward instrument panel, comfortable and spacious backseat, good on gas along with good safety scores.

Cons - Front seats lack side support, numb steering and mushy handling.

comfortable and valuable sedan with mushy handling I recently exchanged a 2008 Toyota Corolla S for a 2012 Toyota Camry XLE. I wasn't seeking a Camry; instead, I was looking for another Corolla S. There were no Corolla S available when I arrived at the dealership. So I took a peek at the row of Camrys and was astounded to learn about the vehicle's good safety scores and estimated fuel economy. Needed a daily commuting economical vehicle so I took up with it. The six-cylinder engine gets approximately 29 mpg on highways and 21mpg on urban roads, despite its efficiency, the Camry's engine provides quick acceleration when I am in need of it. Although the steering feels somewhat lifeless and it isn't quit...

Just get the trunk seals checked

Pros - Silent cabin, Comfortable seats, User friendly controls.

Cons - Weak brakes, Leaks around the trunk lid, Not very engaging to drive.

Not the most fun to drive car Had gone to Walmart taking my Camry and I just loaded the trunk with my groceries like how anyone would do. On my drive back home, it started raining but the drive was not affected at all in any way. Post reaching my place as I opened the trunk lid, the floor was all drenched and all the paper bags were soaked completely. I had to replace the seals around the trunk lid in order to fix this. Also, the brakes on my Camry is pretty weak and requires some getting used to with early braking to get the vehicle stop safely. What I really like about my car is that its very easy to use in terms of controls and the drive is silent and relaxed. This place has one of the fastes...

affordable midsize car with an outdated infotainment

Pros - Spacious backseat, comfortable ride, good reliability and great outward visibility

Cons - Outdated infotainment system and middling fuel economy.

reliable and spacious midsize sedan It's been almost two years now since I've been driving my Toyota Camry. The vehicle is really quiet and smooth. I like the SE suspension since it is a little firmer. Although the sedan's dashboard controls and entertainment system are simple to use, it lacks Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and the visuals on the display screen are outdated. It has plush seats, high-quality materials, and lots of legroom for people in the rear. Although for a 4 cylinder engine the fuel economy should have been better, the brakes are strong, the handling is assured, and the overall drivability is excellent. I purchased a 2017 Toyota Camry. Best deal anywhere!! People here are gr...

With two engine options, two interior options, and multiple exterior paint options, along with an exhausting list of features, Camry offers a great deal of customization. The Toyota Camry is running against opponents such as the Ford Fusion, the Hyundai Sonata, and the Volkswagen Passat.

2012 Toyota Camry Features

9.0/10

The 2012 Toyota Camry consists of 4 trim levels. The lower L and LE trim are equipped with the 2.5-liter inline-4 engine which can get replaced with a bigger V6 engine on the other two trims. The base trim has all the necessary features to make our time comfortable. It has 16-inch steel wheels, manual air conditioning, all basic safety features, cloth seats, and a 6-speaker sound system. The LE trim adds an optional 8-way power-adjustable driver’s seat and power tilt/slide moonroof along with a 6.1-inch touchscreen and remote keyless entry.

The top of the range XSE trim features 18-inch alloy wheels, Dual-zone automatic climate control, fog lights, and optional amenities such as Premium HDD Navigation system, HD radio, 7-inch touchscreen, a 10-speaker sound system. Meanwhile, the SE trim distinguishes itself from other trim because of the exterior features such as port mesh front grille, integrated front, and rear underbody spoilers, and sport side rocker panels.

We Recommend

We would suggest you pick the SE trim. It has an optional engine and shares almost all the features with the top trim. Additionally, with unique exterior features, it holds a different charm.

2012 Toyota Camry Engine and Performance

8.3/10

There are two engine options given on the 2012 Toyota Camry lineup. A 2.5-liter naturally aspirated inline engine is given under the hood of all the trims as standard. It is engaged with the 6-speed automatic transmission and churns out 178 hp and 170 lb-ft of torque. With this setup. The 2014 Camry accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in 7.8 seconds.

SE and XSE trims are blessed with the optional and more punchy 2.5-liter naturally aspirated V6 engine which is also paired with the 6-speed automatic transmission. It churns out 268 hp and 248 lb-ft of torque. With this output, the Camry can sprint from 0-60mph in 6.4 seconds. That said, the driving capability has certainly improved and the ride has become more stable and calm.

Even though the rival from the Hyundai has a slightly smaller engine as compared to the other engines in the segment, it produces higher hp and lb-ft of torque than other engines. However, this does not translate into a smoother acceleration as the Sonata finishes 0-60mph 1.2 seconds later than the Camry. On the other hand, the time taken by the Passat and Fusion is 7.9 and 8.9 seconds respectively.

2012 Toyota Camry Fuel Economy

9.0/10

As per EPA testing, the 2012 Camry with the base 2.5-liter inline-4 engine returns a fuel economy of 25/35/28 mpg in the city/highway/combined respectively. These figures get reduced by 4/5/3 mpg when the more powerful 3.5-liter V6 engine is equipped. Though the Camry has the best fuel economy figures, a smaller fuel tank does affect its mileage.

On one hand, the Camry is happy with the top spot as the most fuel-efficient car, on the other hand, the Volkswagen Passat is crying for quite the opposite, despite having the biggest fuel tank in the competition. That said, the Sonata is the closest rival to the Camry in terms of fuel efficiency which returns just one mpg less in the city. Lastly, the Fusion has a fuel economy of 23/33/26 in the city/highway/combined respectively.

2012 Toyota Camry Interior

8.2/10

The cabin is more opulent and quieter as compared to last year’s model. The seats are covered in the fabric/cloth upholstery as standard which can be replaced with the Sport fabric SofTex and leather upholstery on the higher trims. The 2012 Camry is not stingy when it comes to headroom and legroom. As a result, three adults can easily sit in the second row. Silver trim and Wood-grain-style trim can be seen in the SE and XSE’s cabin.

A 6-way for driver and 4-way manual adjustment for the front passenger seat is standard which can be replaced with the 8 and 4-way power adjustment for the driver and passenger seat respectively. Some other cabin features given standard are manual tilt and telescopic steering column, 60/40 split fold-down rear seat, Analog instrumentation with LCD display, manual air conditioning, One 12V power outlet, Day/night rearview mirror, and rear window defogger.

The Hyundai Sonata celebrates its victory by being the most spacious sedan in the segment while the other sedan is not by a very large margin as Camry and other rivals have just 2.4 to 1.6 cu-ft less in the passenger volume. The largest cargo capacity is offered on the Fusion while the Camry packs the smallest trunk with a cargo capacity of 15.4 cu-ft. Major interior features include:

  • Cloth seats
  • 40/60 split-folding rear seats
  • 8-way power-adjustable driver’s seat
  • Heated front seats
  • Leather-trimmed 4-spoke steering wheel
  • Dual-zone automatic climate control

How intuitive is the 2012 Camry’s infotainment unit?

The 2012 Camry comes equipped with the Entune infotainment system which is better than last year’s system. While the base trim has been sacked from having a 6.1-inch touchscreen which is available on every other trim, it does have features such as a 6-speaker sound system, USB port, aux jack, and a CD player with MP3/WMA playback capability to ease the pain.

However, on the high trims, you get features such as SiriusXM, phone book access and music streaming via Bluetooth, advanced voice recognition, text-to-speech, 10-JBL GreenEdge speaker including subwoofer and amplifier sound system, and a 7-inch touchscreen. Highlights of the infotainment unit are:

  • 6.1-inch touchscreen
  • 6-speaker sound system
  • SiriusXM
  • CD player with MP3 capability
  • Navigation system

2012 Toyota Camry Exterior

7.5/10

The exterior design of the new Camry is not very enchanting. It is smooth and has fine body lines but it fails to capture the required attention. However, on the bright side, its simple design language makes it easy to understand the characteristics of the Camry. At the front, Projector-beam halogen headlights are given, to which auto on/off feature can be added on the higher trims. Integrated fog lights are only limited to the top two trims.

Power outside mirrors with the folding feature is standard on the lower two trims while the upper two trims add a heating feature to it. One-touch power tilt and sliding power moonroof are given throughout the trim range except for the base trim. The 2012 Camry has standard 16-in. steel wheels which get upgraded to 17-inch alloy wheels on SE and 19-inch alloy wheels on the XSE trim.

The exterior dimensions of the Camry and fellow competitors are in the same ballpark. However, if examined finely, Passat is the longest, and Sonata is the tallest one in the bunch. The Ford Fusion has the shortest wheelbase while the biggest one is offered on the Passat. That said, the Camry with the 6.1 inches of ground clearance, is the leading other sedans. Major exterior features are:

  • 16-inch steel wheels
  • Projector-beam halogen headlamps
  • One-touch power tilt/slide moonroof (optional)
  • Acoustic noise-reducing front windscreen (upper two trims)
  • Integrated fog lamps (upper two trims)

2012 Toyota Camry Safety

9.1/10

The Toyota Camry has a more rigid body structure, a higher amount of high tensile steel, and redesigned rear suspension, all of which translates into more stability and a stronger chassis. IIHS has picked the 2012 Camry for the ‘top safety pick’ and awarded ‘Good’ ratings in almost all crash tests.

On the other hand, the NHTSA has assigned an overall 5-star safety rating to the same. While all the trim is equipped with safety features such as smart stop technology, brake assist, ten airbags, and more, the top-tier XSE trim comes with optional safety connect suite which includes services such as emergency assistance, stolen vehicles locator, roadside assistance, and automatic collision notification. Major safety features are:

  • Cruise control
  • Brake assist
  • Blind-spot monitoring (optional)
  • Anti-theft system with alarm (optional)
  • Smart stop technology

2012 Toyota Camry Final Verdict

The Toyota Camry is a great overall package that excels in every area you can think of. Although competitors such as Hyundai Sonata have given a tough fight, in the end, the match has been won by the Toyota Camry. Therefore, you can bring the newly redesigned Camry to your home and make your garage more graceful.
