The Toyota Camry is one of the most successful cars in recent years. After all, who wouldn't love having a midsize sedan that is fully spacious, reliable, and offers a smooth driving experience with excellent cargo capacity. But for 2020, Toyota is giving TRD treatment to the Camry which certainly has gotten our attention.

Expert Review, Pricing Analysis and Buying Guide

A fully revamped sporty sedan with an aerodynamic body and internal changes, this Camry is certainly going to offer tough competition to rivals such as Honda Accord, Mazda 6, and Ford Fusion. All the cars have been fighting it out for the top positions in the sales charts as well as on the feature front, with Mazda stepping up the game in the luxury on offer. Nonetheless, the Camry’s sportier trim does take the competition up to the respective trims on the other cars, and that too with quite a bang.

The Toyota Camry TRD is available in only one trim from the lineup. It is performance-oriented and that makes it somewhat limited. Priced at $31,170, 2020 Camry TRD is available with some interesting features. Multiple exterior changes such as the whole body have been transformed into an aerodynamic version with splitters, a lower black-toned body, and a black rear spoiler.

Oh and yes new wheels which are again sport-styled but colored brake calipers. But various changes to suspension, chassis, and interior design are also available. Tech features such as keyless entry and ignition, advanced cruise control, and other driver aids are also available.

The TRD is pretty much a very well-equipped trim and has all the bells and whistles one would expect from a sporty Camry and hence, not a lot of options are available to add on to the mid-size sedan. The Japanese carmaker does offer a TRD Premium Audio package with JBL speakers that add in the premium speaker system along with other features like summer/all-season tires.

Which Trim should you buy?

Since the Toyota Camry TRD is a single trim of this sporty midsize sedan, buyers will have to fully make their minds if they want to get it or not. We on the other hand will surely recommend this one to power-hungry buyers, as you get a midsize sedan with sports characteristics that are far superior to anything else in its segment. For the price, you get an updated exterior design with more practical upgrades and a solid interior with excellent structural integrity (we mean the extra chassis braces).

Engine and Performance

The Toyota Camry TRD is powered by a 3.5 Liter V6 engine which can produce 301 horsepower and a torque of 267 lb-ft. It is paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission which then sends power to the front wheels. No, you cannot opt for an all-wheel-drive system here. But given this vehicle’s nature, we don't think it's that big of a deal. The engine is the same as XSE but all thanks to TRD treatment the performance you get once put on the road is one of the best in its segment.

It can go from 0-60 mph in 5.7 seconds and can finish a quarter-mile in 14.3 seconds. These timings are insane but we must mention that flooring the gas pedal and passing others on the highway is equally fun. The engine growls impressively when pushed to extremes all thanks to the cat-back exhaust system. The only flaw we could find here is with its automatic transmission. It is the same as its predecessors so it is sluggish and often prone to hunting or droning. Regardless, we think the enthusiasts are going to drool over it.

In the US market, most of the other midsize sedans have dropped their V6 engines and opt for turbocharged four-cylinder engines now. So when compared to its rivals, Camry TRD outran everything in the market which is insanely impressive. The Honda Accord Sport is its only true competitor here. The Mazda 6 GT comes equipped with a 2.5L Turbo unit that offers more 300lb-ft torque.

How well does the 2020 Toyota Camry TRD handle?

Sure, the Camry TRD is fast, but the engine alone is not responsible for an amazing driving experience. It's the steering wheel, suspension, and other factors which when combined result in solid driving. First of all, the steering wheel is well weighted and feels perfectly balanced in any situation. Quick twisting of the steering leads to proper turning of wheels.

The all-new sport-tuned suspension system is awesome than ever before with a stiffer stabilizer bar. TRD treatment also lowered Camry by half an inch which might bring some issues while tackling medium to large bumps. But the lowered body results in the Camry sticking to the road like glue. This results in a vehicle that can tackle any kind of dangerous corner fearlessly.

2020 Toyota Camry Braking Performance

The Camry TRD’s extreme performance and will to go on knife-edge corners is strengthened by an enhanced braking system. When compared to a normal Camry, TRD has increased front brake rotor size by 0.9 inches. On top of that dual-piston calipers are available to squeeze these vented disc brakes. In the rear, you will find 11.1-inch disc brakes which are single-piston calipers but still efficient enough to keep the vehicle out of harm's way.

However, we must mention that the brake pedals take some time in the beginning to achieve ample control. The vehicle weighs 3,572 pounds which is average for its segment but the efficient braking system managed to stop this beauty from 60-0 in a short distance of 116 feet.

It seems the TRD decision to upgrade the rotor size and braking system for the 2020 Camry was perfect. Because when compared to its rivals, Camry might be heavier than the Honda Accord but it comes with bigger brakes which are efficient enough to stop it within the shortest possible distance.

Fuel Economy

Do not forget that the V6 engine inside the Camry TRD is the same as the XSE. It's the other factors that make it more awesome than the others. But surprisingly the engine is as efficient as it is powerful. We managed to get a mileage of 22 mpg in the city, 31 mpg on the highways, and 25 mpg when combined. This makes it one of the best in its class and makes it harder to believe how a performance-oriented vehicle can have good fuel efficiency. The 15.8-gallon fuel tank results in a very good range. So at the end of the day no matter how sporty it feels, the 2020 Camry TRD can be a great family midsize sedan that can be used for daily usage or long route trips.

Range (City/Highway/Combined, in Miles)

Surprisingly the powerful V6 engine delivers good mileage but still when compared to its rivals, Camry surpasses Ford Fusion but falls behind both Honda Accord and Mazda 6. On the other hand, Ford Fusion along with Mazda 6 offers a bigger fuel tank, so naturally, they will provide a better driving range.

The inside of the 2020 Toyota Camry TRD is attractive; you also get one of the biggest cabins in the midsize sedan segment. The whole design is visually pleasing and the same as other normal Camry versions but what makes it different from the others is the color combination. The whole cabin is available in dark-toned interior trim with crimson red accents and stitching everywhere. As for the dashboard, a tilted but attractive design with metallic accents and red stitching is available. Sport leather tilt and the telescopic steering wheel are decent in design.

As for the seats, power-adjustable front bucket seats are available with 8 ways for the driver and 6 ways for the front passenger with lumbar support. A 60/40 bench seat is available for rear occupants. All seats come with SofTex fabric material which feels great. Oh and yes all seats are fully comfortable with enough room for maximum-sized occupants, even getting in and out of the Camry is easy. But we must mention that for TRD there is no option for a sunroof. But the cargo capacity is excellent and the inside of the cabin offers adequate storage spaces for small items.

Trunk Capacity (cubic feet)

There is no doubt about how Camry TRD offers one of the biggest cabins in its class, but we must mention that Honda Accord offers more shoulder room for front-row occupants and legroom for rear-row occupants. The 15.1 cargo capacity is also amazing but in TRD you cannot increase the volume by folding down rear row seats because of V-shaped bracing. Some standout interior features are:

  • Power adjustable front bucket seats with lumbar support
  • Remote keyless entry and ignition
  • Illuminated locking glove box
  • SofTex fabric seat trim with TRD red stitching

What's there to keep you entertained?

The 2020 Camry TRD’s infotainment system is decent as it comes with a 7-inch infotainment touchscreen. It is powered by Toyota’s Entune 3.0 software which is decent and never feels like a burden to use. Physical buttons and knobs are also available around the display in case one doesn't want to swipe through everything. But if one wants to just skip over all of this then support for Android Auto, Apple CarPlay and Amazon Alexa are available.

Toyota’s advanced voice recognition system is fairly good and the same can be said about the six-speaker sound system. Just do not expect top-tier premium quality because this is a performance-oriented vehicle and the noise isolation is poor. Multiple USB ports for charging your devices are available. Other features such as SiriusXM, Bluetooth hands-free phone connectivity, and WiFi Connect are also available. Some standout infotainment features are:

  • 7-inch infotainment touchscreen
  • Apple Carplay and Android Auto support
  • Amazon Alexa support
  • six-speaker sound system
  • SiriusXM

The biggest difference in the Toyota Camry TRD you are going to find when compared to the normal version is its exterior design. TRD has enhanced Camry by providing an aerodynamic body kit that looks jaw-droppingly amazing. At the front, the redesigned black grille with splitters looks great. TRD low LED headlamps and front black spoiler are also available. On sides, black power heated side mirrors, door handles and windows trim are available with rocker panel extensions below. Finally, the rear has been updated by adding a black racy spoiler with minor changes to the rear bumper and exhaust tips.

The top of the Camry TRD is covered in black. Finally, the vehicle has been lowered by half an inch. Moreover, the available Black matte alloy wheels with summer performance tires are 3.1 pounds lighter and half-inch wider than what you would find in XSE. Available in four distinct colors (Black, grey, white, and Supersonic red), we must say the Camry is looking more attractive than ever before.

Although dimensions wise Camry TRD is somewhat similar to its rivals, Honda Accord is a bit lighter. Regardless, this aerodynamic body of Camry surely provides an edge in delivering a better ride experience, and lowered ride height results in the vehicle sticking to the road better than the others. Some standout exterior features are:

  • 19-inch matte-black TRD alloy wheels
  • Aerodynamic body kit
  • Summer performance tires
  • TRD front and rear bumpers
  • Black grille
  • TRD rear spoiler
  • TRD LED low headlamps

When it comes to safety, TRD has done an excellent job making Camry more solid than ever before. Improvements such as extra braces to the chassis for better integrity, fatter anti-roll bars for better control over vehicles are surely going to pay off on the road. On top of that Camry TRD is loaded with Toyota Safety Sense P, which loads various driver aids such as advanced cruise control system, hill hold control, lane-keeping assist, lane departure warning system with steering assist, Blind spot monitoring system, and rear cross-traffic alert.

A rear backup camera is also available for easy parking. Features like these are the reason why normal versions of Camry received full star ratings in crash tests by NHTSA and IIHS rewarded it with ‘Top safety Pick+’. We believe TRD should be on the same level or even better. Some standout safety features are:

  • Blind-spot monitoring system
  • Rear cross-traffic alert
  • Advanced cruise control system
  • Lane-keeping assist
  • Lane departure warning system with steering assist

2020 Toyota Camry TRD vs 2020 Honda Accord Sport

Camry vs Accord is an old rivalry. So even if the Camry has received TRD treatment, the Honda Accord Sport version is still there to offer serious competition. Accord might offer better mileage, more room for occupants and cargo, and a better infotainment system but Camry TRD surpasses it by having a faster engine, better range because of a bigger fuel tank, and of course more exciting driving experience and visuals.

2020 Toyota Camry TRD vs 2020 Ford Fusion Titanium

When stacked against Ford Fusion, Camry TRD wins again by being faster and more fuel-efficient. Even the cabin is more spacious than Fusion. But Ford Fusion offers a bigger fuel tank resulting in a better driving range, better cargo capacity which can be further increased by folding down rear row seats.

2020 Toyota Camry TRD vs 2020 Mazda 6 Grand Touring Reserve

When compared to Mazda 6, Camry TRD certainly offers an impressive engine, better braking power, and a spacious cabin. But still can't match the level cabin design which Mazda 6 offers let alone the level of quality. Mazda's infotainment system is also much better than Toyota's entune. Lastly, Mazda offers better mileage which when combined with a bigger fuel tank results in a better driving range.

Final Verdict

Camry has always been an impressive midsize sedan but this TRD treatment has made it more awesome than ever before. Seeing how it is a performance-based trim and purely for enthusiasts/purists so the crowd for it would be limited. But its impressive performance, tech features, and stunning visuals are harder to ignore so if you want a vehicle that can carry family but also do it in style then yes you should consider the 2020 Toyota Camry TRD.
