Corolla iM competes with John Cooper Mini, Honda Civic hatchback and Fiat 500l pop being the cheapest among all. All of these are small cars with spruced up engines and low manufacturing cost. So how does Toyota make a difference?

We Recommend

There is only one trim available but better go with manual shift than opting for continuous variable transmission (CVT). As manual shifts are easy to reach higher power band as compared to time taken by CVT.

Engine

5.6/10
"Save the manuals! We love that the standard transmission on the Corolla iM is a six-speed shift-it-yourself unit. Now save your excitement, because the iM’s underpowered four-cylinder engine will drain whatever’s left" -Car and driver

Little Corolla is Powered by the same 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine which produces 137 hp @ 6100 rpm which is 5 hp higher than its sedan sibling. The torque figures came down to 126 lb-ft @4000 rpm. Sports mode helps in quick throttle response but no paddle shifters ruins the fun.

Honda Civic and Fiat 500 are way above in term of power delivery and scores a quicker lap time. All of the vehicles comes with 6 speed manual. Mini stays a feet behind the Corolla as the power output is almost same.

Acceleration

Corolla iM does 0 to 60 in 9 .1 seconds and reaches to the quarter mile mark in 16.4 seconds which is very slow as compared to its rivals. So drag races between redlights is not that fun. Acceleration is too boring for a hot hatch.

Mini and Honda are 2 seconds quicker from it while Fiat takes 8 seconds to reach from standstill to 60 miles an hour. Don't expect to pass car by car due to the sluggish engine of iM hatchback .

Ride and Handling

It drives sharper than the regular corolla but the underpinnings are same. The 1.8 liter inline four doesn't provide much grunt if compared to its snazzy exterior and the performance is same as it's cousin sedan. You have to redline the limiter to get the most out the engine. Even though by looks it feels fast but it is not. Due to the independent rear suspension ride is smooth and comfortable on bumpy patches. McPherson strut in the front multilink in the rear will keep the car planted on curves and increases drivability. Sports mode doesn't do much to the engine and CVT is better than the manual.

"You could say it’s like a prize fighter who has everything but a punch. That’s a pretty serious deficiency for a boxer"-Car and driver

Braking

Equipped with 11.7 inches in front and 11.0 inches ventilated disc in the rear. Braking distance is average taking 126 feet's to come at standstill.

All the rivals have got much better performance in emergency stopping. That may be due to high curb weight while Fiat is the heaviest among all.

Fuel Economy

6.8/10

Corolla iM returns 27 mpg in city driving condition and 35 mpg on the highway and the combined mileage is 30.

Mini cooper and civics' engine give few more miles per gallon. Fiat may rise your monthly fuel expenses, delivering 25 MPG combined.

Interior

5.0/10
"Boasting an edgy-yet-tasteful layout, the Corolla iM's cockpit emphasizes functionality." - Kelley Blue Book

Corolla's interior is themed monochrome and fit and finish is acceptable considering the price. Door handles and some other bits are covered in piano black finish. A soft touch material covers everything you touch which feels upmarket. Appearance is the same as the sedan sibling.

A white line runs across the dashboard shaped like a big S pays homage to the Scion heritage. You get many clever spaces to store articles and total of 8 cup holders. High bolstered seats with contrast stitching grabs your body. A 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system loaded with intuitive software.

All the competitors have same dimensions and can seat 5 passengers and comfortably. Legroom and headroom is enough for an average sized adults in every car.

Cargo Capacity

It can carry much payload than sedan which is interesting and doesn't compromise's on space being a hatchback.

Exterior

8.5/10
"It looks something from the sets of “Fast and the Furious” but don’t be mistaken. People will love this car for its looks but performance is a letdown. 17 inch dual tone alloy wheels gives it a stunning appearance and the height" -Edmunds

Dimension and Weight

The dimensions of the car are same stretches from 170.5 in length and 69.3 in width. An average sized adult will not face any difficulty in fitting inside the car but the legroom is compromised as compared to the rivals in this segment. A sweet line starts from the front till the end just above the door handles.

Mini and Civic have almost got the same dimensions as Corolla but Fiat appears much like a wagon. 500l pop is the longest which makes up for more legroom.

  • LED daytime running lights
  • Power folding and heated mirrors
  • Aero body kit
  • Projector Headlamps

Competition

Mini Hard top Four Door Cooper vs Toyota Corolla iM

Mini has grown into a MPV sort of a car from its tiny dimensions. The design language take cues from the vintage cooper. Customization list are never ending and you can change anything from seats to wheels. 134 hp engine is peppy and joy to drive. It comes with good level of safety features and 4 star safety rating. The power figures are almost same as compared to corolla with a little more torque. Maintenance cost is much with the Mini than Corolla.

Honda Civic Hatchback (LX) vs Toyota Corolla iM

After discontinuation many years ago Civic is back with a bang. Currently manufactured in England and shipped to the American shores. It offers a lively engine with a slick gearbox. Boy racer styling is a subjective matter and differs from person to person. High-quality cabin and top-notch safety features are some of the pros of this Japanese sword. Civic is priced higher than the Corolla. Power output is also way ahead than the iM which can be the decisive factor for many people. Corolla also retains a higher resale value than Civic.

Fiat 500l POP vs Toyota Corolla iM

It is different from other compact cars. Many customization options are available. Tall wagon practicality favor's this Italian sculpture. Mini's charm will appeal to many people. Handling is not that inspiring. Rear seats can be adjusted to make more legroom. Great exterior view from the cabin increases drivability. Handling is on the downside. The power output is much more than the Civic which is a plus point for few more bucks. Annual maintenance cost high if compared to the opposition .

Final Verdict

Corolla stopped the Scion brand from dying and rejuvenated the iM hatchback with the Japanese logo on back and front. It a compact hatch and best bang for your bucks. People will notice you driving this car. Interior is sassy with sporty exterior, however, the engine is not potent enough to come in hot hatch territory.

Orphan hatchback is a decent compact offering, but no standout in the segment
