The new generation GR86 will get major tweaks with the design for better structural rigidity, lower center of gravity, and cosmetic upgrades. The most notable change will be with the performance aspect for it comes with the 2.4L Boxer 4 engine. The price for the 2022 Toyota GR86 is expected to start from $31,000.

At the moment, we don't have any particular information regarding the feature set nor the optional packages that would be available with the GR86. But a revelation made by Toyota hints us that the GR86 would be available in two trims: the Base and Premium. The Base variant gets few features like the 17” wheels with Michelin Primacy HP tires and Adaptive Cruise Control as standard, while the Premium version sports 18-inch wheels with Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tires and a Lane-departure warning system.

Given that the 2022 Toyota GR86 is crafted to cater to the likes of track-inspired customers, the Premium trim would be a great option to choose. It has that aura of athleticism along with class right from the seating space that's equipped with the Alcantara upholstered seats. The 2022 Toyota GR86 gets better with a tuned-up 2.4L boxer engine. The power output is expected between 228-232 horses with 184 pound-feet of torque. The chances for the 228hp boxer are higher as the identical Subaru BRZ is revealed with the same motor. The standard transmission is a 6-speed manual, whereas the 6-speed automatic will be available as optional.

The front-engine RWD configuration will make sure that the 2022 GR86 displays the true sports car behavior. The previous FA20 engine is replaced with a newer FA24 that uses an aluminum head and block that is lighter and is heat resistant upto an extent. The tuned 2.4L H-4 opens up new capabilities for the GR86. In terms of performance, the GR86 and the Subaru BRZ are nearly identical. The Chevrolet Camaro, with its base 275 hp 2.0L Turbo 4 pot motor, is the fastest coupe among the rivals, covering the 0-60 MPH run in 5.4 seconds. On the other hand, the Civic Si Coupe is slightly slower than the rest, for it sports an underpowered 1.5L Turbo I-4 engine.

As per the rumors and teasers, the upcoming GR86 will deliver unparalleled handling and balance. The redesigned structure is focused on linear acceleration by keeping the center of gravity at the lower side. The aluminum alloy structure will ensure less weight. With the 6-speed manual, the speculated economy is 21 MPG in the city, 29 MPG on the highway, and 24 MPG combined. As we move further with the 6-speed automatic, you get better 24 MPG in the city, 33 MPG on the highway, and 27 MPG combined. If the GR86 retains the same old 13.2-gallon tank, you can expect more than 400 miles of range on the highway, which is pretty impressive for a sports car.

The Honda Civic Si Coupe has the best in class fuel economy. The Toyota GR86 will tie with the Subaru BRZ. The Chevrolet Camaro takes the last spot. However, when it comes to range, the Camaro has a massive fuel tank which pushes its highway range upto 589 miles. Considering its performance, the Toyota GR86 has satisfactory fuel efficiency.

The interior design is similar to what we see on the friendly rival of 2022 GR86, the Subaru BRZ. The design is inspired by Gazoo Racing, and that's why you get a two-tone sporty cabin layout. It is not the most advanced cabin per se, yet you get sufficient tech with the new TFT digital display with a startup animation and a bigger infotainment screen, not to forget the sports steering wheel. The GR86 will carry over the 4 seat configuration from the previous model. We can expect a premium suede leather upholstery with the Gazoo Racing theme that adds sporty red piping and stripes all over the cabin. 

The sporty red LED controls blend in with the theme. With multiple seat adjustments, you will get a heating function with the front sport seats as standard. The sport-oriented cabin design is identical to the BRZ, still, the Toyota carries it better. The convenience features might get better as Toyota won't let it slide with minor updates. This includes dual-zone air-conditioning, auto-dimming rearview mirror, foldable rear seatback, one-touch power windows, driver and passenger easy entry, and upto 2 12V DC power outlets.

Except for the Civic Si Coupe with its 5 person seating, all the other cars in the competition come with a seating capacity of 4 people. The sporty cabin of the Toyota has ample space in both rows, however, the legroom could have been better. We can expect a more spacious cabin with the GR86. The 2022 GR86 gets a stiffer and rigid chassis than the previous generation. As the GR86 uses a modified Subaru Global platform, there's a 50% increase in the torsional rigidity and strength. The exterior design is tweaked with advanced aerodynamics to provide better stability. The front fascia is updated with a GR-specific functional MATRIX grille, sleek LED headlamps, and functional air vents. 

The uplifted rear fascia has reworked taillamps, an integrated spoiler, and massive chrome tip exhausts. Overall, the design looks sharper and better from each and every angle. Even with certain major changes and upgrades including the engine, the weight is similar to the previous generation. In fact, the GR86 is the lightest sports coupe against the rivals except for the BRZ. There's upto a 1.2-inch increase in the length of the GR86, with identical width and a lower height by 0.3 inches. The ground clearance is much better than the previous generation.
