The Toyota Land Cruiser has been one of the most legendary SUVs from Toyota, known for its reliability and off-roading capabilities. The 2019 model of the SUV hasn’t been tweaked much and it retains its powerful V8 motor and the same drivetrain, which ensures smooth power delivery and terrific off-road capability.

See detailed review »

Pros

Terrific off-road capability, thanks to the legendary pedigree!

Robust and durable powertrain means it’ll easily outlive a couple of generations

Spacious cabin means 8 passengers can sit comfortably

Silky smooth powertrain, it does retain its typical Toyota DNA

Cons

Bulbous size means twirling it around town could be a pain

While the cabin is spacious, it cannot hold a candle against the likes of Navigator

Justifies to prove its price tag, the luxurious Lexus-badged version isn’t too far

What's New?

It gets no major changes for 2019 and remains the same.

2019 Toyota Land Cruiser Features

Toyota had kept its flagship SUV a classy product and loaded all the required features and amenities in a single trim option, rather than classifying it in different trim levels. The Land Cruiser is offered only in base trim which has features like adaptive cruise control, keyless ignition, four-zone climate control AC, and an electro-chromatic inside the rearview mirror as standard. The only option you get in it is rear-seat entertainment with dual LCD screens. The mechanical systems in the SUV are kept standard. It has only a 4WD layout which gets power through a 5.7L V8 motor and an 8-speed automatic gearbox.

Which trim should you buy?

Well, you don’t have options to opt from except for the single trim on offer. Considering a flagship range of SUVs in the Toyota family, it features premium and upscale cabin along with the rugged structure from the outside. The SUV is highly capable either in off-roading or in terms of towing and is able to do almost every task. You don’t get an option for the mechanical changes in the SUV, however, there is an option for rear-seat entertainment, where you can opt for two display screens for onboard entertainment at some extra cost.

2019 Toyota Land Cruiser Engine and Performance

8.5/10

Under the hood of the 2019 Toyota Land Cruiser, you will find a 5.7L V8 motor as standard, which churns out 381 horsepower and 401 lb-ft of torque. It is mated with an 8-speed automatic transmission which does its duty very well, and doesn’t feel sluggish in its upshifts and downshifts even with this bulky SUV.

The Land Cruiser is offered in a standard 4WD layout which has impressive capabilities in almost every terrain. Weighing over 5,800 pounds, the SUV is quite fast as compared to many of its rivals. It accelerated from 0-60 MPH in just 6.7 seconds and completed the quarter-mile range in 15.1 seconds. However, the top speed of this beast is not specified.

All have almost equally powerful motors while the Navigator is the only which benefits from the turbocharger and produces class-leading power figures. The power and torque of the other three SUVs are almost the same. The Navigator is the quickest among in the competition while the Lexus is quite sluggish. But the quarter-mile timings of the Land Cruiser is the slowest among all, and the Navigator covers it in quite less time.

How well does the 2019 Land Cruiser handle?

This 2019 Toyota Land Cruiser is undoubtedly a great off-roader and also a very comfortable SUV for long rides. It gets hydraulic suspension systems that don’t keep it very agile in some situations but manage to keep the SUV sufficiently stable in sharp corners.

Overall, the SUV has a smoother ride and crisp handling, however, the steering feels quite heavy and has good feedback, and the off-roading performance is a major highlight of the Land Cruiser. The suspension is set up in a way it can handle off-road terrains with ease and comfort

2019 Toyota Land Cruiser Braking Performance

The SUV gets all disc brakes both at the front and the rear which is of adequate size and is almost equal compared to many of its rivals. The braking is quite well-balanced which gives you enough confidence whether you are traveling at high speeds or on sloped terrains. The front discs are sized 13.9 inches while the rear is of 13.6-inches and having a stopping distance from 60-0 MPH is 121 feet, which is quite impressive for a bulkier structure which is over 5800 pounds.

The Land Cruiser, Navigator, and the Lexus have equal rotors at both front and rear, while the INFINITI QX80 has smaller discs. The Land Cruiser is the bulkiest, still, it has quite an impressive stopping distance as compared to the QX80 which is almost 200 pounds lighter than it. The stopping distance of the Navigator and the Lexus isn’t available, but you can expect the same as the other two SUVs.

2019 Toyota Land Cruiser Fuel Economy

6.1/10

This section might not impress you much, and moreover, in this class, you will get SUVs that have thirstier engines. But still, considering the bulky structure of the Land Cruiser, the economy of 13 MPG in the city and 18 on the highways is quite appreciable. It has an adequate sized tank that can carry 24.6 gallons of fuel, which is enough to deliver a driving range of over 300 miles in the city and over 440 on the highways.

The Land Cruiser and the Lexus have nearly the same MPG figures and are quite lower than others in the competition. The Navigator on the other side has a good fuel economy as well as a decent-sized tank which gives it a maximum driving range in the class. The INFINITI QX80 has the largest tank of 26 gallons and has a superior highway range.

2019 Toyota Land Cruiser Interior

7.7/10

The cabin of the 2019 Toyota Land Cruiser feels like a whole room, where you have an ample amount of space on offer here. The broader structure of the SUV really helped in increasing the cabin space, especially the middle passenger in the second row got almost the equal space as others. You find leather everywhere in the cabin which gives a much upscale and premium feel.

The dashboard seems massive, especially the center console where you get a big-sized screen at the center and huge AC vents in boxy shapes. It is covered in soft-touch elements on the top and some brushed aluminum trims at the center make the cabin eye-catchy. Same in the case of the doors, they feel heavy and rugged and the armrests are quite well-cushioned.

Coming to the seats, it provides seating for 8 that too very comfortably. The seats are very well cushioned and wrapped in brown leather upholstery and have superior bolstering. The driver seat features a 10-way power adjustment along with 3 memory settings while the passenger gets 8-way adjustments. Both offered to heat and ventilating functions to provide you extra coziness. The second and third row has plenty of room where adults can also be seated comfortably. You got two displays at the rear which are optional though, but it is worth taking it at some extra cost.

The Land Cruiser is the only one that provides seating for 8 while the Lexus also provides seating for 8. The cabin room on offer by the Navigator is the maximum and the trunk space too. In the third row also, the room offered by all the SUVs is very spacious where 2 adults can be seated easily. The trunk volume offered by the Lexus is the minimum which is a major drawback of some of the standout interior features are as follows:

  • Heated and ventilated front seats with memory function
  • Heated steering wheel wrapped in leather
  • Four-zone automatic climate control
  • Auto-dimming IRVM
  • Cooled storage box at the center console

What’s there to keep you entertained?

The 2019 Toyota Land Cruiser will take very good care of your onboard entertainment. It is equipped with a 6.1-inch high-resolution touchscreen display which comes with a split-screen feature. The display has sharp graphics and a fluidic response along with an optimistic UI, which helps in easy browsing and navigation. It has a few physical buttons and knobs for the controls while the majority of the controls are controlled by the infotainment display only. It has some generic features like AM/FM radio, Bluetooth connectivity, AUX and USB ports, and many more. Some of the highlights of the infotainment system are as follows:

  • 14-speaker JBL audio system
  • Navigation
  • Satellite radio
  • SiriusXM radio
  • Wireless charging pad
  • Advanced voice activation feature
  • Split-screen display

2019 Toyota Land Cruiser Exterior

7.1/10

Without a doubt, the Land Cruiser has always had a classy design with a massive and bold structure. At a first glance, it appears as it has a really bulky and rugged body. Starting upfront, it got a broad grille enclosed with thick chrome strips holding the Toyota emblem at the center. It features projector headlamps that perfectly merge with the chrome grille and look very elegant. Overall, the front fascia of the SUV is simple but it might look like an old-school design to some buyers.

Coming to its side profile, here you can clearly see how tall the SUV really is. The design elements are very simple here also, where you would not find any cuts and creases on the doors, however, you get the footstep at the bottom for convenience. The windows are massive and are deep-tinted, which gives a roomy feel inside. And on the top, the roof rails are further enhancing their looks, and they are not just to enhance the aesthetics but also to perform their duty.

It has 18-inches 10-spoke aluminum alloy wheels which are covered with high-profile tires that can tackle almost any kind of terrain. And from the rear, the design approach is simplistic yet elegant, without any cluttered elements. This SUV uses a lot of chrome all around the body, which really enhances its looks.

The Land Cruiser is the bulkiest in the competition while the QX80 is of least weight, which might be the key aspect of their difference in MPG figures. The Land Cruiser is not too lengthy an SUV but still manages the cabin and trunk space quite well. The Navigator has a massive structure among all and a larger ground clearance too, which gives extra confidence to the driver in off-roading. While the ground clearance of the Land Cruiser is decent, moreover, it can tackle almost any kind of bump. Some of the standout exterior features are as follows:

  • Heated and auto-dimming side-view mirrors
  • Deep tinted glass
  • Projector headlamps with DRLs
  • Functional roof rails

2019 Toyota Land Cruiser Safety

8.0/10

The Toyota Land Cruiser was built on the J200 platform which is also being shared with the Lexus LX 570. In this platform, the frame of the SUV is strengthened by 20 percent, which provides the SUV extra robustness. The roof pillars were also redesigned to provide extra safety to the occupants in case of a rollover.

The 2019 model of the SUV hasn’t been tested by NHTSA or the IIHS, but we believe that the structure is robust enough, and if tested, it will definitely perform very well. Apart from the robust construction, the SUV is packed with a plethora of active and passive safety features. Some of the standout safety features are as follows:

  • Driver and front passenger active headrests
  • Driver and front passenger Active Seat Belt Pre Tensioning System with force limiters
  • 3-point seatbelts for all seating positions; driver-side Emergency Locking Retractor (ELR) and Automatic/Emergency Locking Retractor (ALR/ELR) on all passenger belts
  • Adjustable front- and second-row outboard seat belt anchors
  • LATCH (Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children) includes lower anchors on outboard second-row seats and tether anchors on all second-row seats
  • Hill Start Assist Control (HAC)
  • Anti-theft system with engine immobilizer
  • ToyotaCare (featuring a no-cost maintenance plan with roadside assistance)

2019 Toyota Land Cruiser Competition

8.5/10

2019 Toyota Land Cruiser vs 2019 Lincoln Navigator

The Lincoln Navigator has a turbocharged motor while that of the Land Cruiser has a naturally aspirated one, which produces significantly less power than the Navigator, and also quite sluggish as compared to the Navigator in completing quarter mile or 0-60 MPH sprint. Also, the Navigator has quite good MPG figures, moreover, it has a class-leading fuel economy. The navigator provides seating for 7 while the Land Cruiser can accommodate 8 adults very comfortably. The Navigator has a massive structure but surprisingly it is lighter by almost 200 pounds by the Land Cruiser.

2019 Toyota Land Cruiser vs 2019 Lexus LX 570

These two SUVs are twin sisters, either look-wise or power-wise and both share the same platform. Both have the same capacity engine and produce the same power figures. But, the Land Cruiser, despite being bulkier than the Lexus LX 570, is quite faster than the LX 570. They both have the same fuel economy and tank capacity too. But the cabin makes a lot of difference, where the Land Cruiser provides seating for 8 while the LX 570 can accommodate only 5 adults.

2019 Toyota Land Cruiser vs 2019 INFINITI QX80

They both have almost the same powered engines but the QX80 is significantly cheaper than the Land Cruiser. The Infiniti QX80 is a little faster than the Land Cruiser because of their difference in curb weights. And same in the case of fuel economy, which is greater in QX80 by 1 MPG. The Land Cruiser provides seating for 8 while the QX80 has space for only 7. Despite being bulkier than the QX80, Land Cruiser has a better performance than the QX80.

2019 Toyota Land Cruiser Final Verdict

The Toyota Land Cruiser is definitely in the higher price range, but the features on offer and its capabilities are worth spending the amount of $86,000. It is a true off-roading machine along with class-leading comfort and loaded with luxurious features. You can say it is a perfect blend of a luxury sedan and an off-roading truck.

The powerful V8 accelerated this bulky giant quite well and its robust drivetrain was capable of tackling almost every terrain. Despite being a bulky structure and powerful motor, it manages the fuel economy quite well. If you want something like the above specs, then the Land Cruiser will be a better choice for you, and the reliability of the Toyota adds a plus point to it.
