The SUV competes with the likes of Infiniti QX80, Lexus LX 570, and Mercedes-Benz GLS 550. The sports utility vehicle from Toyota easily outlasts the competition by means of a powerful performance and a superior off-road competency.

2017 Toyota Land Cruiser Engine

7.3/10
“The 2017 Toyota Land Cruiser delivers impressive performance overall, with a powerful V8 engine and a smooth-shifting transmission. It's one of the most capable off-road vehicles, complemented by driving dynamics on the highway that are refined and composed. Fuel economy is low for the class.” – cars.usnews

Engine and Transmission

A 5.7L V8 engine provides juice to the Land Cruiser. The engine produces 381 hp of power and 401 lb.-ft. of torque. An 8-speed automatic transmission mode is there for helping with gear shifting. Additionally, a 2-speed transfer case is also available. It helps to switch drivetrain between walking pace on a slippery road and freeway speed on the highway.

Acceleration

2017 Toyota Land Cruiser requires 6.6 seconds for accelerating to 60 MPH. This is better than the Lexus LX 570, which requires 7 seconds for doing the same. Land Cruiser has a healthy acceleration response that is available across all gears. Infiniti QX80 offers better 0-60 MPH acceleration, requiring 6.2 seconds. However, it is the GLS 550 that offers the best time of 4.7 seconds.

Toyota Land Cruiser SUV covers a quarter-mile in 15.2 seconds. This is 0.1-second faster than the Lexus LX 570. The time required for covering a quarter-mile by Infiniti QX80 and GLS 550 are 14.8 and 13.1 seconds, in the respective order.

Ride and Handling

Although handling and steering are simply ok, the hydraulic stabilizer bar suspension offers excellent body control in the Land Cruiser. Steering doesn’t provide much feedback, but that’s acceptable because of the 2017 Land Cruiser’s sheer size. Overall ride quality is comfortable and firm.

Because of the bulkiness, body roll is also present, though less intense. One major highlight of the Toyota Land Cruiser’s driving is the steady, progressive brakes. They are excellent for calming down the heavy SUV from highway speeds with minimal difficulty. A pronounced forward pitch is there while braking hard, but is mitigated successfully.

Braking

While the front brake measures 13.9 inches, the Toyota Land Cruiser flaunts a rear brake measuring 13.6 inches. The braking system is responsive and powerful. Despite weighing 5765 lbs., 2017 Toyota Land Cruiser is able to come to a complete halt at a distance of 121 feet when decelerated from 60 MPH.

2017 Toyota Land Cruiser Fuel Economy

5.7/10

The Land Cruiser delivers a combined fuel economy of mere 15 mpg. This, identical to that offered by the Lexus LX 570, is subpar in the segment. Infiniti QX80 offers a slightly better-combined fuel economy of 16 mpg.

2017 Toyota Land Cruiser Interior

8.5/10
“The 2017 Land Cruiser features an interior that is nicer than the average Toyota, with top-quality materials and lots of high-tech items. The overall impression is short of luxury-vehicle standards, but if that's what you're looking for, the similar Lexus LX 570 should satisfy.”- Edmunds

Seating and Comfort

2017 Toyota Land Cruiser is able to accommodate as much as 8 persons at once. However, its constricted space in the 2nd and 3rd rows, disallows all 8 people to be adults. The SUV offers 38.3 and 42.9 inches of front headroom and legroom, respectively. While the front headroom is ample, the front legroom is maximum in the competition.

In the second row, 2017 Toyota Land Cruiser has 38.9 inches of headroom and 34.4 inches of legroom to spare. The latter is obviously confining. Infiniti QX80 offers an excellent 2nd-row headroom and legroom of 40 and 41 inches, respectively. The scenario for the third row is even worse for the Land Cruiser. While the headroom of 35.8 inches is ok, legroom of 28.3 inches is simply irritable. This is even constricting for older kids and adolescents.

Infotainment System

Unlike the seating, the updated Entune infotainment system is superb. A 9-inch bright touchscreen sits nicely on the dashboard, allowing the driver to easily use the infotainment while driving the Toyota Land Cruiser. The infotainment system is complemented by excellent navigational capability. Furthermore, there are two, 11.9-inch screens available on the front seatbacks.

Controlling and using the infotainment system and the climate controls is easy. On the other hand, 4WD system controls and some safety feature switches are somewhat hard to use. Though connectivity options via Bluetooth, USB, and Wi-Fi Hotspot are available, there is no support for Android Auto or Apple CarPlay. The ride, nonetheless, comes with a standard 14-speaker JBL audio system.

Interior Features

Comfort and convenience are prioritized in the 2017 Toyota Land Cruiser, as evident by the exquisite cabin and interior. Furthermore, the visibility is simply excellent. Key interior feats flaunted by the 2017 Toyota Land Cruiser SUV are:

  • 4-zone automatic climate control
  • 10-way power-adjustable driver seat with memory functions
  • A 120-volt household power outlet
  • A power tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel
  • A wireless charging pad
  • Heated and ventilated front seats
  • Leather upholstery

Cargo Capacity

By sheer looks, one would assume that 2017 Land Cruiser can carry loads of cargo around. This would have been the case if not for the awkward third-row folding mechanism and the absence of a power liftgate.

The cargo space available behind the third row and with the third row folded is 16.1 and 43 cubic feet, respectively. The maximum storage capacity of the 2017 Toyota Land Cruiser is 81.7 with 2nd row folded and the third row removed completely.

“Toyota adds a bit of flair to the 2017 Land Cruiser’s exterior, with a dynamic front end, power bulge hood, prominent taillights and rear bumper plus handsome 18-inch wheels. The exterior reflects the Land Cruiser's purpose in life, that is, to be ruggedly dependable in any weather, over any terrain, while offering the ultimate in refined luxury.”- Kelley Blue Book

Dimension and Weight

It is, on the contrary, the Infiniti QX80 has the most length of 208.9 inches among the class rivals. Width and height for the 2017 Land Cruiser are 77.6 and 76.4 inches, respectively. Exterior Features
The side view of the 2017 Toyota Land Cruiser makes clear that it is an old-school SUV. The ride’s unique profile hasn’t changed much in the past 2 decades. Major exterior highlights of the 2017 Toyota Land Cruiser include:

  • 18-inch cast aluminum wheels
  • A sunroof
  • Automatic LED headlights and running lights
  • Automatic wipers
  • Power dome bulges on the hood
  • Power-folding and auto-dimming mirrors
  • Underbody skid plates

2017 Toyota Land Cruiser Safety

Neither IIHS nor NHTSA has crash-tested the 2017 Toyota Land Cruiser. Standard safety and reliability features available to the SUV includes antilock brakes, multiple airbags, and stability and traction control. Other noteworthy safety features are hill start assist, trailer-sway control, and parking sensors in the front and rear.

Land Cruiser SUV also offers a number of advanced safety features. The ride comes with a surround-view camera paired with a blind spot monitoring system that also generates rear cross-traffic alert. A lane departure warning, forward collision alert and mitigation, and Toyota’s Safety Connect emergency telematics system are also available.

2017 Toyota Land Cruiser Competition

Toyota Land Cruiser VS Infiniti QX80

A 5.6L I8 engine powers the Infiniti QX80. The engine is paired with a 7-speed automatic transmission mode. The sports utility vehicle has an excellent engine power of 400 hp and even better torque of 413 lb.-ft. Infiniti QX80 has a competitively less expensive price tag of $63,850.

Infiniti QX80 accelerates to 60 MPH in 6.2 seconds and requires a distance of 123 feet for coming to a complete halt. The ride offers the second-to-last-in-league combined fuel economy of 16 mpg. QX80 has an excellent ground clearance of 9.2 inches and spacious seating.

Toyota Land Cruiser VS Lexus LX 570 Three row

Like the 2017 Toyota Land Cruiser, Lexus LX 570 is able to accommodate as much as 8 persons. It comes with a 5.7L I8 engine, capable of producing ample 383 hp of power and a respectable 403 lb.-ft. of torque. It is the costliest ride in the competition with a price tag of $90,075.

Lexus LX 570 is the bulkiest ride in the competition with a curb weight of 6000 lbs. Furthermore, it is the slowest in the league, requiring 7 seconds for accelerating to 60 MPH. Lexus LX 570 can tow a maximum of 7000 lbs. and has the least-in-league mileage of 15 mpg.

Toyota Land Cruiser VS Mercedes-Benz GLS 550

The Mercedes-Benz G-Class is looked upon as a close competitor of the Toyota Land Cruiser as they share few historic stories together. If we talk about the seating capacity, and size, both the SUVs are quite identical. The Land Cruiser offers extra seat while the GLS offers extra turbochargers, which puts up the advantage on either side.

2017 Toyota Land Cruiser Final Verdict

Toyota Land Cruiser is one of the well-reputed and oldest lineups that are still going on. The 2017 iteration of the Land Cruiser continues offering a bundle of off-road capability with strong performance and comfort.

Nonetheless, the ride lags behind in terms of offering modern features as well as delivering a respectable combined fuel economy. Overall, the strengths of 2017 Toyota Land Cruiser easily outwits its weaknesses. Hence, the ride emerges as a top choice in the luxurious off-road SUV segment.
