The 2021 Toyota RAV4 TRD Off-Road trim is available as an independent trim itself and is priced at $36,080 excluding additional charges. It is definitely meant for buyers who are looking for an off-roading experience with their daily driver SUV itself. The TRD designed and tuned components make all the difference and make this SUV off-road ready. It faces competition from the likes of Chevrolet Equinox Premier, Volkswagen Tiguan SEL 4Motion, and Hyundai Tucson Ultimate.

2021 Toyota RAV4 TRD Off-Road SUV Features

The 2021 Toyota RAV4 TRD Off-Road itself is an off-road focussed trim of the RAV4 SUV. It is priced from $36,080 excluding additional charges. It is specifically targeted at buyers who are looking for a more versatile offering in the segment. The Toyota Racing Development team has worked well and the different upgraded components work well without any hiccups. The TRD Off-Road trim gets some visually differentiating elements as compared to the regular RAV4. However, it gets the same powertrain as a regular RAV4 and some more power for the off-road-oriented version would have been appreciated.

Which trim should you buy?

The 2021 Toyota RAV4 TRD Off-Road is available as an individual off-road-focused trim and if you are looking to have some fun on weekends by off-roading then look no further. The RAV4 TRD Off-Road version is well built and comes with many likable features like all LED exterior setup, AWD configuration, TRD tuned suspension setup, multi-terrain select drive modes, TRD-specific interior elements, SofTex upholstery, Toyota Safety System 2.0, Star Safety System, etc.

2021 Toyota RAV4 TRD Off-Road SUV Engine and Performance

7.0/10

The 2021 Toyota RAV4 TRD Off-Road is equipped with the same 2.5L four-cylinder engine as found on the regular RAV4 models and produces 203 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque. The engine is mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission and all the power is transferred via it to all four wheels. The transmission is slick, smooth, and performs just as expected. However, you’ll find the RAV4 underpowered in some driving situations and off-roading conditions as well. The multi-terrain select system offers different driving modes for driving on snow, sand, dirt, and rocks.

For handling the off-roading duty better, Toyota has equipped the TRD Off-Road model with an engine oil cooler, automatic transmission fluid cooler, and upgraded 150-amp alternator as well. The TRD Off-Road trim gets an increased ground clearance of 8.6-inches for better off-road compatibility. The RAV4 TRD Off-Road does a 0-60 mph run in 7.8 seconds and a quarter-mile drag is completed within 16.6 seconds. We would have liked better output for the off-road focussed model but sadly Toyota didn’t consider the same.

The Toyota RAV4 Off-Road is equipped with the largest engine of the lot and is the most powerful as well. The Chevrolet Equinox Premier is the smallest one with respect to engine cubic capacity. The 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan SEL 4Motion offers much better torque output than the RAV4 which is more important while off-roading. The performance of all the SUVs is closely matched and the top speed of all the SUVs is also very similar.

How does the 2021 Toyota RAV4 Off-Road handle?

The 2021 Toyota RAV4 Off-Road does not offer to handle that you would expect from a compact SUV in its segment. However, we can’t complain as carving the corners like a pro was never its intention and it was made to face tough terrains. Due to high ground clearance, there is certainly a noticeable body roll when you take the corners a little too aggressively and it is surely not recommended.

The TRD tuned suspension is sprung towards the stiffer side for off-road advantages and you might experience pitching at higher speeds. However, slow speed damping is just about acceptable. The steering is light and precise but definitely, understeer is prevalent under certain driving conditions. Overall, the maneuverability is good in urban conditions and the straight-line stability of the SUV is also good.

2021 Toyota RAV4 Off-Road Braking Performance

Usually, SUVs come with higher curb weight and hence higher momentum. The RAV4 TRD Off-Road is equipped with 12.0-inch rotors on the front end and 11.1-inch rotors on the rear end. The ventilated discs along with an anti-lock braking system and brake assist bring the 3655 pounds SUV to a complete stop from 60 mph within 124 feet of stopping distance. The brake pedal feedback is adequate and confidence-inspiring. Despite being a heavy SUV, the RAV4 TRD Off-Road comes to a complete stop without extra nose dive, thanks to its balanced weight distribution.

The Hyundai Tucson is the lightest vehicle and comes with reasonably sized rotors at both ends. It offers the shortest stopping distance of just 118 feet which is commendable. It is followed by Chevrolet Equinox with 121 feet of stopping distance while both the RAV4 and Volkswagen Tiguan stop within 124 feet of stopping distance.

2021 Toyota RAV4 TRD Off-Road SUV Fuel Economy

The 2021 Toyota RAV4 TRD Off-Road offers a decent fuel economy for its segment. It offers 25 mpg in the city, 32 mpg on the highway, and 28 mpg in mixed driving conditions. With a fuel tank capacity of just 14.5 gallons, slightly on the lower side as compared to the competition, it offers about 363 miles in the city, 464 miles on the highway, and 406 miles in combined driving conditions. The range is good owing to its better fuel efficiency despite having a smaller fuel tank

The Equinox and Tiguan can offer up to 402 miles and 394 miles of range on a full tank of gas. The Equinox is slight;y less fuel-efficient than the RAV4 but is equipped with a larger fuel tank, offering a very similar driving range.

2021 Toyota RAV4 TRD Off-Road SUV Interior

The interior of the 2021 Toyota RAV4 Off-Road is a good place to be in but surely not the best one. The interiors are perfectly designed for a typical SUV and not overdone in any way. The dashboard is minimalistic and is covered with soft-touch material. The infotainment screen stands tall in the center of the dashboard and slim air conditioning vents lie just below it. The dual-zone climate control system with an air filter inside the cabin helps in maintaining comfortable ambient conditions inside the cabin.

The steering wheel feels good to hold and comes with mounted controls for added convenience. The front seats are good but not the best and provide just about adequate comfort. The rear seats offer good comfort and are 60/40 foldable to accommodate extra cargo if necessary. All the seats are trimmed in SoftTex upholstery and the front seats get TRD embroidered logo on the headrests with contrasting red stitching. Even the floor mats TRD logo makes you feel different every time you enter the SUV.

2021 Toyota RAV4 TRD Off-Road SUV Competition

2021 Toyota RAV4 Off-Road vs 2021 Chevrolet Equinox Premier

The 2021 Toyota RAV4 Off-Road is more off-road capable than the Chevrolet Equinox Premier. It offers better performance and cargo capacity than Equinox. However, Equinox offers better interior design and offers better passenger space as well. The RAV4 offers higher ground clearance than the Equinox. The Equinox is slightly less expensive than the RAV4 TRD Off-Road but the RAV4 surely is a more versatile offering and we would consider it over the Equinox Premier.

2021 Toyota RAV4 Off-Road vs 2021 Volkswagen Tiguan SEL 4Motion

The Volkswagen Tiguan SEL 4Motion is a very good offering in many aspects but it can’t beat the RAV4 TRD Off-Road with respect to its off-road capability. It closely matches the RAV4 in terms of passenger space and cargo capacity but can’t beat it in outright performance. The RAV4 TRD Off-Road is more fuel-efficient as well. It might not have the executive styling of the Tiguan but has better compatibility both on-road and off-road.

2021 Toyota RAV4 Off-Road vs 2021 Hyundai Tucson Ultimate

The Hyundai Tucson Ultimate ticks most of the right boxes but is mostly biased for usage in urban conditions. The Toyota RAV4 TRD Off-Road on the other hand is more versatile and can be used over different surfaces with ease. It offers better ground clearance, cargo capacity, and efficiency as well compared to the Hyundai Tucson. The Hyundai Tucson might have a slight edge over the RAV4 in terms of interior comfort and handling but we would pick the RAV4 TRD Off-Road for its versatility.

2021 Toyota RAV4 TRD Off-Road SUV Final Verdict

The 2021 Toyota RAV4 Off-Road is a better offering as compared to the conventional RAV4 models as it improves the off-roading ability of the standard RAV4 without sacrificing much efficiency and performance. It also has a high safety quotient as testified by both the NHTSA and IIHS. The RAV4 TRD Off-Road is surely a well-built vehicle and is expected to be very reliable too. It might be priced higher than some of its rivals but we believe that the higher price is justified with its versatility. However, we would have loved slightly more power for the TRD version at least. Overall, we won’t think twice before recommending it to someone looking out for a compact SUV that is both on-road and no-road capable.
