Toyota RAV4 has been ruling the compact SUV market for a very long time, and it still remains one of the best cars you can get with the spacious cabin for 5 occupants and a large cargo capacity. Before 2019, the Toyota RAV4 was a basic soft-roader that had the bare minimum off-road capabilities, but in 2019, Toyota did the restyling of the exterior and gave the RAV4 a premium interior. With all these upgrades, Toyota also introduced the top-level TRD Off-Road model for RAV4, which certainly had a more sturdy stance and hols up better in off-road conditions.

The 2022 Toyota RAV4 has multiple trims for every type of customer. The main selling attribute of the TRD Off-Road model is its adventuristic nature with tough styling, off-roading features like hill descent control, all-terrain tires, softer suspension setup for off-roading, and multi-terrain select which can be set by the driver according to the terrain conditions. The upcoming 2022 model might get an exterior refresh with some minor tech addition, whereas the core powertrain and drivetrain tech will remain as it is. The Toyota RAV4 TRD Off-Road competes directly with the respected Chevrolet Equinox.Volkswagen Tiguan and the Hyundai Tucson.

We Recommend

The TRD Off-Road is a special off-roading trim of the normal RAV4. It shares the same powertrain as the normal one, but the special thing about this product is its ability to climb rocks, tackle muddy terrain, and glide through rough patchy roads. It’s a great off-roader, but it doesn’t have the Jeep Wrangler abilities. The smooth 8-speed automatic, tons of convenience features, and the insured Toyota safety surely improve the ride quality. It’s a great product for mild off-road trips, and one can consider it.

Release Date

Toyota hasn’t announced the 2022 model of the RAV4, and nothing can be said about the changes it might experience. But as usual, Toyota would likely announce its 2022 RAV4 series with TRD Off-Road variant by the end of this year around November and supposedly launch the upcoming model in the mid-2022 summer.

2022 Toyota RAV4 TRD Off-Road SUV Engine and Performance

9.5/10

The Toyota RAV4 pretty much started the off-roading trend, and nowadays, the TRD Off-Road variant carries forward its legacy. The TRD Off-Road is powered by a 2.5-Liter Naturally Aspirated Inline-4 gas engine, which transfers a total power of 203 horses and 184 pound-feet of torque to all four wheels of the vehicle. The 8-speed automatic gearbox provides a buttery smooth ride and offers the driver hassle-free gear shifts.

The 2022 model of TRD Off-Road trim wouldn’t be facing any major changes, and thus it will feature the same power and drivetrain as last year's model. The performance figures will also remain the same. Currently, the TRD Off-Road takes around 7.8 seconds to accelerate from standstill to 60 mph, while it completes the quarter-mile sprint within 16.6 seconds. The acceleration timings are slightly off due to a little bit slow 8-speed automatic.

Out of all four vehicles, the RAV4 TRD features the most powerful engine which certainly grants it the true ability to pull up to 3,500 pounds of weight. Surprisingly, the Hyundai Tucson with its 181 horsepower engine matches the top speed of Toyota at 130 mph. The 203 and 221 pounds-feet of early torque in Equinox and Tiguan doesn’t help them to beat the RAV4 in the 0-60 mph acceleration timing. When comparing the price range, the RAV4 TRD Off-road is the most expensive option in the competition.

2022 Toyota RAV4 TRD Off-Road SUV Fuel Economy

6.6/10

The performance of the Toyota RAV4 TRD Off-Road doesn’t create a barrier against fuel efficiency. Relative to the off-road ability and the engine size, the current model claims a good 25 mpg in the city driving, 32 mpg while cruising on the highways, and 28 mpg under the combined conditions. But the disappointing fact is the fuel tank size, with 14.5 gallons of a tank, the vehicle can tackle up to 406 miles in the combined situations. There might not be any changes in the efficiency part of the 2022 lot of RAV4 TRD Off-Road.

The RAV4 TRD Off-Road not only surpasses its rivals in performance but also claims a relatively better fuel economy. The current model of Toyota RAV4 TRD Off-Road can run up to 28 miles per gallon under combined running, and the only competitor that gives Toyota tough competition is the Chevy Equinox with its average efficiency of 27 mpg. Volkswagen and Hyundai are unable to touch even a 25 mpg line. The only thing that disappoints us about the RAV4 is its small 14.5 gallons of fuel tank capacity.

2022 Toyota RAV4 TRD Off-Road SUV Interior

4.8/10

The 2022 model of the SUV will majorly follow its predecessor and gets the premium leatherette seats. The front seats are power-adjustable, and the headrests have the TRD badge stitched to them. The vehicle has two rows and a total of 5 seats for the occupants. The rear seats are also equally comfortable as the front seats and are suitable for all sorts of passengers. There is an ample amount of storage for the baby stroller in the trunk along with the AC power supply for the tire fixing equipment. Toyota has also given us the net to keep the grocery items accumulated at a particular place.

The cabin is covered with soft-touch materials, which makes the interior luxurious and super comfy. The instrument panel, on the other hand, could use some more brightness as it feels rather dull but there is plenty of customization. The seats are both heated and cooled, the suspension system absorbs all the impacts on bad roads, and the car glides in the rough conditions without letting any sound inside the cabin. The 2022 avatar might experience some cosmetic changes from the inside but nothing to be much excited about.

The seating capacity of 5 occupants is an appropriate decision in the compact SUV segment, and all vehicles that lie in this segment seem to follow this rule. According to the data mentioned in the table, the Chevrolet Equinox is the most spacious in the front row, whereas the RAV4 seems a little bit short in headroom. On rear seats, the RAV4 takes on the lead and is followed by Equinox. The other two, Volkswagen and Hyundai, lack space by just a couple of inches. If you are a fan of big boot space, then the RAV4 would be the best choice for you. Some salient interior features are:

  •  Wireless smartphone charging
  • TRD specific perforated upholstery with red stitching
  • The multi-terrain selector
  • Height adjustable rear cargo area
  • Digital rearview mirror with HomeLink universal transceiver
  • Total of 8 cub & bottle holders

How intuitive is the 2022 Toyota RAV4 TRD Off-Road infotainment unit?

The RAV4 TRD Off-Road is one of the best vehicles in Toyota's garage; the reason is not only its attributes to climb on the hills and rocks but also the best in the class infotainment system. The 8-inch touchscreen display mounted in the middle of the dash is very responsive, and hard buttons with tuning knobs work beautifully.

2022 Toyota RAV4 TRD Off-Road SUV infotainment screen

The current system also gets a 4G LTE mobile connectivity along with the Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration. The upcoming model might only get an upgrade to 5G mobile connectivity. Some salient infotainment features are:

  • The 8-inch touchscreen display
  • 11-Speaker JBL audio system with Subwoofer & Amplifier included
  • Dynamic navigation
  • Android Auto & Apple CarPlay
  • SiriusXM & Alexa support
  • Five USB ports

2022 Toyota RAV4 TRD Off-Road SUV Exterior

The Toyota RAV4 TRD Off-Road must be the first car that comes to your mind while thinking about the compact SUV segment, and that’s because of its wide and muscular stance. The front end has a big matte finish blacked-out grille which complements the sharp LED headlights and further makes the vehicle more stylish. On the side profile, the TRD Off-Road gets the big wheel arches with awesome black claddings. Under the cladding, the RAV4 houses 18-inch alloy wheels.

2022 Toyota RAV4 TRD Off-Road SUV

The top gets a white color roof with black roof rails, while the hard lines follow the design on the side profile from front to the rear end. Overall the rear design looks good, but the taillights could have been styled differently. The 2021 model carries the same exterior styling as of 2019, and there is also no news about the new refreshed looks of the 2022 product, although Toyota might integrate it with some minor tweaks.

Chevrolet Equinox and Toyota RAV4 are the lightest vehicles with a curb weight of 3,512 and 3,655 pounds, respectively. The length of every vehicle is above 180 inches, but Hyundai is the shortest one with a length of 176.4 inches. The wheelbase of RAV4 is a couple of inches shorter than the rivals, and this grants it better turning ability in the corners. The 8.6 inches of ground clearance is the largest in the competition, followed by the Tiguan with 7.9 inches of clearance. Some salient exterior features are:

  • Black RAV4 & TRD badging
  • Dual-tone chrome exhaust tip
  • active grille shutters
  • Low profile roof rails
  • 18-inch matte-black TRD flow-formed alloy wheels
  • Privacy glass on all rear, liftgate, quarter, and windows side

  • Integrated fog lights

2022 Toyota RAV4 TRD Off-Road SUV Safety

5.7/10

Toyota is one of the safest brands in the market as it never fails to impress us with its class-leading safety features, and it’s one reason that the current RAV4 TRD Off-Roading scores a perfect 5 stars overall rating in crash tests done by the NHTSA, while IIHS has also awarded this car with the “Top Safety Pick'' title. Besides the ratings and basic safety features, the TRD Off-Road also has some advanced features like the overhead 360-degree view at slow speeds, bird eye view, front and rear parking assist with automated braking, and the Toyota’s Safety Sense 2.0. Toyota would like to look out for the safety of the occupants in the upcoming 2022 model as well. Some awesome safety features in RAV4 TRD Off-Road are:

  • Enhanced vehicle stability control (VSC)
  • 8-Dual stage airbags
  • Front and rear side-impact door beams
  • Tire pressure monitoring system
  • Lane departure with steering alert
  • Lane tracing assist
  • Dynamic radar cruise control
  • Driver side emergency locking retractor

2022 Toyota RAV4 TRD Off-Road SUV Competition

2022 Toyota RAV4 TRD Off-Road Vs 2022 Chevrolet Equinox Premier

The Chevrolet Equinox is also a very strong product that costs a little bit less than the TRD Off-Road, whereas, for an extra price, the RAV4 offers a better-looking car with better wheels which also outperforms Equinox in terms of off-roading capabilities. However, they both get almost the same fuel efficiency in practical life. The decision of going ahead with one of these two is very difficult, thus it all boils down to what you expect from your compact SUV.

2022 Chevrolet Equinox Premier

2022 Toyota RAV4 TRD Off-Road Vs 2022 Hyundai Tucson Ultimate

The Hyundai Tucson is a great SUV for those who want a performance punch from their daily driver. The Tucson’s 2.4-L inline-4 engine produces 181 hp of power, which is somewhat close to RAV4. It’s not made for off-roading, but it surely feels peppy for city and highway riding. The seats are comfy, and the tech inside the car is better than the RAV4. The Tucson with its performance-lacking engine fails to claim better fuel economy, and that’s the only downside of the vehicle.

2022 Hyundai Tucson Ultimate

2022 Toyota RAV4 TRD Off-Road Vs Volkswagen Tiguan SEL 4Motion

The Volkswagen Tiguan is an urban compact SUV that is certainly not made for off-roading. The material quality inside the cabin is surely premium, and due to its lower stance, it’s much more stable on curves. The Tiguan definitely represents a class as it’s a classy product with its stylish urban looks. It has sufficient power and performance figures for on-road driving conditions, but the fuel economy on the other hand is poor.

2022 Toyota RAV4 TRD Off-Road SUV Final Verdict

The 2022 Toyota RAV4 TRD Off-Road is an all-in-one product. It delivers best-in-class performance with its powerful 2.5-L I-4 engine. It is definitely not a Jeep Wrangler, but it certainly has better off-roading capabilities than its rivals. The front and side profile design have a sturdy and muscular stance, and it surely radiates the mean off-roading vibes. The 2022 model would only get some interior and exterior cosmetic enhancement, other than that, it will completely remain the same as the current model.
