Toyota RAV4 has been ruling the compact SUV market for a very long time, and it still remains one of the best cars you can get with the spacious cabin for 5 occupants and a large cargo capacity. Before 2019, the Toyota RAV4 was a basic soft-roader that had the bare minimum off-road capabilities, but in 2019, Toyota did the restyling of the exterior and gave the RAV4 a premium interior. With all these upgrades, Toyota also introduced the top-level TRD Off-Road model for RAV4, which certainly had a more sturdy stance and hols up better in off-road conditions.

The TRD Off-Road is one of the topmost trims of the Toyota RAV4 lineup, and it gets all the features of the lower trims along with the off road capabilities. The 2021 model costs around $35,980, while $36,250 is the estimated price tag for the 2022 avatar. The 2022 model features technology like TRD off-road-tuned suspension setup, bigger 18-inch alloy wheels, and off-roading modes for different terrains such as muddy, snowy, sand, rock, and dirt roads. The TRD Off-Road is a special off-roading trim of the normal RAV4. It shares the same powertrain as the normal one, but the special thing about this product is its ability to climb rocks, tackle muddy terrain, and glide through rough patchy roads. It’s a great off-roader, but it doesn’t have the Jeep Wrangler abilities. The smooth 8-speed automatic, tons of convenience features, and the insured Toyota safety surely improve the ride quality. It’s a great product for mild off-road trips, and one can consider it.

Release Date

Toyota hasn’t announced the 2022 model of the RAV4, and nothing can be said about the changes it might experience. But as usual, Toyota would likely announce its 2022 RAV4 series with TRD Off-Road variant by the end of this year around November and supposedly launch the upcoming model in the mid-2022 summer.

The Toyota RAV4 pretty much started the off-roading trend, and nowadays, the TRD Off-Road variant carries forward its legacy. The TRD Off-Road is powered by a 2.5-Liter Naturally Aspirated Inline-4 gas engine, which transfers a total power of 203 horses and 184 pound-feet of torque to all four wheels of the vehicle. The 8-speed automatic gearbox provides a buttery smooth ride and offers the driver hassle-free gear shifts.

The 2022 model of TRD Off-Road trim wouldn’t be facing any major changes, and thus it will feature the same power and drivetrain as last year's model. The performance figures will also remain the same. Currently, the TRD Off-Road takes around 7.8 seconds to accelerate from standstill to 60 mph, while it completes the quarter-mile sprint within 16.6 seconds. The acceleration timings are slightly off due to a little bit slow 8-speed automatic.

Out of all four vehicles, the RAV4 TRD features the most powerful engine which certainly grants it the true ability to pull up to 3,500 pounds of weight. Surprisingly, the Hyundai Tucson with its 181 horsepower engine matches the top speed of Toyota at 130 mph. The 203 and 221 pounds-feet of early torque in Equinox and Tiguan doesn’t help them to beat the RAV4 in the 0-60 mph acceleration timing. When comparing the price range, the RAV4 TRD Off-road is the most expensive option in the competition.

The performance of the Toyota RAV4 TRD Off-Road doesn’t create a barrier against fuel efficiency. Relative to the off-road ability and the engine size, the current model claims a good 25 mpg in the city driving, 32 mpg while cruising on the highways, and 28 mpg under the combined conditions. But the disappointing fact is the fuel tank size, with 14.5 gallons of a tank, the vehicle can tackle up to 406 miles in the combined situations. There might not be any changes in the efficiency part of the 2022 lot of RAV4 TRD Off-Road.

The RAV4 TRD Off-Road not only surpasses its rivals in performance but also claims a relatively better fuel economy. The current model of Toyota RAV4 TRD Off-Road can run up to 28 miles per gallon under combined running, and the only competitor that gives Toyota tough competition is the Chevy Equinox with its average efficiency of 27 mpg. Volkswagen and Hyundai are unable to touch even a 25 mpg line. The only thing that disappoints us about the RAV4 is its small 14.5 gallons of fuel tank capacity.

The 2022 model of the SUV will majorly follow its predecessor and gets the premium leatherette seats. The front seats are power-adjustable, and the headrests have the TRD badge stitched to them. The vehicle has two rows and a total of 5 seats for the occupants. The rear seats are also equally comfortable as the front seats and are suitable for all sorts of passengers. There is an ample amount of storage for the baby stroller in the trunk along with the AC power supply for the tire fixing equipment. Toyota has also given us the net to keep the grocery items accumulated at a particular place.

The cabin is covered with soft-touch materials, which makes the interior luxurious and super comfy. The instrument panel, on the other hand, could use some more brightness as it feels rather dull but there is plenty of customization. The seats are both heated and cooled, the suspension system absorbs all the impacts on bad roads, and the car glides in the rough conditions without letting any sound inside the cabin. The 2022 avatar might experience some cosmetic changes from the inside but nothing to be much excited about.
