Sequoia name is derived from the Jurassic era tree which grows upto 300 meters of height. The Toyota Sequoia is somewhat similar, it uses a classic body on frame chassis and casts the largest shadow among rivals with its size. It has been in the market for a decade and started to show its age when compared with modern rivals.

The Sequoia comes fitted with a robust 5.7-liter V8 engine which is enough to serve all your needs. The powertrain is mated to a 6 speed manual transmission and rear wheel drive is standard. You get Truck-like driving dynamics but the ride is cushioned especially when equipped with adaptive suspension.

Overall Rating

The 2020 Toyota Sequoia aims to sway away buyers from popular choices such as the 2020 Chevrolet Tahoe, and the 2020 Ford Expedition. Let’s see how it performs against the rivals. The 2020 Toyota Sequoia is offered in four trims and priced between an MSRP range of $48,400 – $67,335. It is offered with a single powertrain, a 5.7-liter V8 that is capable of generating 381 HP and 401 lb-ft of torque. With such significant power to offer the 2020 Sequoia fails to deliver in terms of fuel efficiency and brake performance.

2020 Toyota Sequoia Engine and Performance

8.3/10

"The Sequoia is available only with a 381-hp V-8 engine mated to a six-speed automatic transmission and either rear- or four-wheel drive." - CarandDriver

Engine configuration of the 2020 Toyota Sequoia

The Toyota Sequoia is powered by robust a 5.7-liter V8 which generates 381 horsepower and 401 lb-ft of torque. The Power is routed to the rear wheels and all-wheel drive is optional. The V-8 feels powerful and there is plenty of torque which helps this bulky SUV to move quickly from a stop.

2020 Toyota Sequoia SUV engine bay

A six-speed automatic transmission is standard. Shifts are butter smooth and the power is evenly distributed over the whole rev range. It performs on track, tarmac, and on terrain, but it stands out in the off-road performance that it has to offer.

The Toyota Sequoia produces a similar amount of horsepower as the rivals but the six-speed transmission feels smooth but it hardly helps the Sequoia in improving the fuel efficiency, especially when compared to 10-speed units found in Chevrolet Tahoe or the Ford Expedition.

Acceleration of the 2020 Toyota Sequoia

This Behemoth SUV can take you from 0 to 60 in just 7.1 seconds which is pretty decent for its size. The engine of Toyota Sequoia can never feel strained when passing slower traffic. The tough powertrain is useful on rough tarmac and provides enough torque to climb steep hills.

The Toyota Sequoia runs neck to neck with Chevrolet Tahoe and Ford Expedition in the 0 to 60 MPH runs, with just a difference of a split second.

Ride and Handling of the 2020 Toyota Sequoia

Toyota Sequoia can make mountains look like molehills with its rugged 381 hp V8 powertrain and robust chassis. It weighs nearly three tons and measures over 205 inches in length, despite its size the Sequoia is easy to maneuver and park. The cabin is well insulated and suppresses wind noise effectively. The steering is vague and feels less connected to the tarmac. Although the handling is precise it feels a bit heavy at lower speeds. High speed at tight corners will make the tires squeal.

2020 Toyota Sequoia

The ride is compliant and the suspension absorbs smaller bumps quite well but there is plenty of clutter when driving over big potholes. TRD models have a firmer but there is nothing sporty about them. Top-end Platinum models offer the best ride thanks to an air-suspension setup that can adapt instantly to road conditions. 4-wheel-drive Sequoia models even have 2-speed transfer cases with low-range gearing, meaning it's more capable off-road than its competitors. This is no Jeep Wrangler, but the Sequoia is a competent off-roader.

Braking of the 2020 Toyota Sequoia

The Brake pedal in the Sequoia is soft and easy to modulate around town. Sequoia’s advanced Automatic Limited-Slip Differential (Auto LSD) uses the brakes to help reduce wheel spin and enhance traction performance on unpredictable road surfaces like sand or mud. The steering moves from side to side in an emergency braking situation. The average stopping distance is also good for this segment.

The Toyota Sequoia has the worst braking distance because of its higher curb weight and stops at longish 130 feet. The other two cars in competition deliver a brake performance of 121 feet to kill the 60 mph speed.

The towing capacity of the 2020 Toyota Sequoia

The wonderful V8 is rated to tow up to 7,100 pounds which is less than most of the rivals. It is well suited for small trailers and boats. Trailer-Sway Control (TSC) is designed to apply brake pressure at individual wheels and manage engine torque to help the driver maintain control of the trailer.

The competition in consideration has a better towing capacity, the 2020 Chevrolet Tahoe has the ability to tow 8600 lbs and the 2020 Ford Expedition has a towing capacity of 9300 lbs. This is due to the torque generation of 383 lb-ft and 470 lb-ft respectively.

2020 Toyota Sequoia Fuel Economy

7.0/10

"The Sequoia is a heavy drinker—of gasoline, that is. While many of its full-size classmates also have an insatiable thirst for fossil fuels, the Toyota has the worst EPA estimates and real-world fuel economy." - Car and Driver

The Toyota Sequoia can burn a hole in your pocket with monthly fuel bills as it is the least efficient among rivals. With the fuel economy figures of 13 mpg city and 17 mpg on the highway, don’t expect a greener environment. Most of the rivals are way more fuel-efficient than Sequoia. However, the performance it delivers is completely worth the fuel consumption.

2020 Toyota Sequoia Interior

7.4/10

All-around comfort and surprising serenity are the Sequoia's main strengths. Levels of tire and wind noise are well suppressed, and the adjustable suspension helps maintain comfort when hauling heavy loads. The seats offer good long-haul comfort - Edmunds

Seating and Comfort of the 2020 Toyota Sequoia

As said the Sequoia is the biggest SUV Toyota builds and it has the most spacious cabin in its class. The upright dashboard is truck-like comes with massive dials and above them is a center screen for infotainment. The Sequoia can seat 8 people comfortably with a standard third row, and a variety of seating configurations, to handle any combination of passengers and payload.

2020 Toyota Sequoia SUV cockpit area

The front seats are wide and comfortable separated by a big old armrest.  The 40/20/40-split second-row seat has plenty of room for adults, and its sides and reclines for different individuals. Alternatively, you can elect to have 2nd-row captain’s chairs, which reduces the total seat count to seven. The extended rear door aids passenger entry in the third row which also reclines to offer a good amount of headroom and legroom. Wide A-pillars and large mirrors hamper the view through turns but side visibility is good for lane changes.

2020 Toyota Sequoia Exterior

9.0/10

The 2017 Toyota Sequoia full-size SUV is as massive and sturdy as the tree for which it is named. Unfortunately, the Sequoia's aging design places it behind newer SUVs in the areas of towing, design and power. GMC's Yukon and Yukon XL, for example, offer more horsepower and cargo space. … Still, the Sequoia offers plenty of room for growing families, and its 5.7-liter V8 has no problem moving this SUV around- Kellybluebook

Dimension and Weight of the 2020 Toyota Sequoia

The Toyota Sequoia hasn’t been updated in recent years. The grille has been slightly reshaped in the year 2018 and it features different inserts depending on trim level. Based on the Tundra, the Sequoia has the largest dimensions and outdoes the $85,000 Landcruiser in terms of size. The short front and rear overhangs allow you to climb steep angles with ease and long wheelbase accounts for a spacious interior.

The Safety rating of the 2020 Toyota Sequoia

The 2020 Toyota Sequoia has not been tested completely for the safety tests. It gets a four-star rating in the aspect of the rollover test. It doesn't get scored for the aspect of side crash and frontal crash tests. This further reflects in no particular score for its overall safety rating either, as given by NHTSA. On the other hand, IIHS hasn't rated the 2020 Toyota Sequoia at all for any of their safety crash tests.

The Safety features of the 2020 Toyota Sequoia

2020 Toyota Sequoia Competition

6.0/10

2020 Ford Expedition vs the 2020 Toyota Sequoia

The Ford Expedition offers a far more efficient powertrain than the Sequoia. It is also available in an extended-wheelbase EL model. The Expedition also offers a smooth ride and higher towing capabilities. Sequoia's main benefit lies in its lower price and Toyota's reputation for reliability.

2020 Ford Expedition

2020 Chevrolet Tahoe vs the 2020 Toyota Sequoia

The Chevrolet Tahoe with its highly efficient V8 engine and high-quality interior earns merit. Its compromised third row and high load height are some of its demerits. The Chevrolet Tahoe comes with more standard features including Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a Wi-Fi hot spot, none of which are even offered in the Sequoia. The Chevrolet is also more modern and upscale. The Tahoe is a clear winner here.

2020 Chevrolet Tahoe

2020 Toyota Sequoia Final Verdict

The gargantuan V8 engine will be enough for most of your needs. You get lots of interior and cargo space with excellent hauling capabilities. The Sequoia looks much the same as it has looked for several years and feels outdated when compared with rivals. Competitively priced the Sequoia is a pretty good SUV and includes a lot of driver assistance technologies.
