Overview

Motoring is approached differently by people – some like being alone in a machine, close to the limits. Some like being with loved ones and roam around the landscape leisurely. If you are of the second kind, 2018 Toyota Sienna is waiting in the Dealership. It fits eight souls and unlike the “cooler” full-size SUVs, it does not neglect the occupants in third rows. It's honest – not pretentious.

Sienna will cocoon your kids with its spacious, quiet interior and the Entune infotainment system will keep them happy (sadly, Android Auto and Apple Carplay are unavailable). It will keep them safe too as Toyotas safety sense – P bundled with latest active safety feature. However, do know that Sienna lacks many of features when compared to Honda Odyssey or Chrysler Pacifica.

An efficient V6 mated to a smooth 8 speed automatic moves your mobile home effortlessly and quietly while being friendly with your wallet too. Toyota also offers class-exclusive all-wheel drive in Sienna – a boon if you live in northern snow affected areas. Toyotas depreciate slowly and the Sienna makes a judicious use of your family budget.

Too many to choose from? We help you find the best trim

We think the LE trim, at $33,660 is the best value as it can seat 8 and offers all the necessary features like power sliding rails and gets upgraded Entune Audio Pus. If you live in snow-affected areas, AWD option is also available in LE trim. The next significant upgrade is XLE trim costing $3000 dollars offering excellent 9 speaker JBL stereo system and other tasty features.

What kind of performance do you look for in a minivan? 0-60 is barely relevant here. A minivan should be brisk, not insanely fast. And it should do that effortlessly. In Sienna, a smooth 396 hp 3.6 V6 mated to an equally silky 8-speed automatic delivers just that – effortless performance. You don’t want a screaming machine to overpower the sweet voice of your child, do you?

Engine

7.5/10

With its powerful 296-horsepower V6 engine, the Toyota Sienna has always delivered impressive acceleration that borders on sporty, although we don’t envision many Sienna drivers challenging other.- Kelley Blue Book

Engine and Transmission

The 2018 Toyota Sienna gets a 3.6 Liter V6 developing 296 hp @ 6600 rpm and 263 pounds-feet of torque @ 4700 rpm. The engine develops less power than the competitors. However, the Sienna develops best in class torque and that improves drivability. More importantly, it develops the power smoothly and silently.

Drivetrain Front Wheel Drive Front Wheel Drive Front Wheel Drive Front Wheel Drive

Apart from developing power smoothly, the V6 also develops it nicely and accelerates all family and their luxury to 60 mph in just 6.9 seconds. The 8-speed automatic shifts smoothly so while you are stomping on the gas, your child (or children) will feel like riding a continuous uninterrupted wave of cream while looking at that moon behind the safety of those large windows. Who says minivans are boring?

Acceleration

We find it tasteless to bother about minute differences in numbers when talking about a minivan. However, following table fulfills the purpose.

Vehicle Quarter Mile 0-60 mph
Toyota Sienna 15.2 Seconds 6.9 Seconds
Honda Odyssey 15.2 Seconds 6.6 Seconds
Chrysler Pacifica 15.8 Seconds 7.3 Seconds
Kia Sedona 15.8 Seconds 7.4 Seconds

Ride and Handling

The Sienna`s suspension is expected to prevent the road imperfection from bothering your family relaxing in the large cabin. The suspension performs their duty well either at high speeds or at low speeds. Harsh bumps are handled competently and the minivan stays composed even at high speeds. However, shudders and squeaks do filter in.

The sienna`s steering system is expected to require minimum driver attention so he/she can also enjoy the ride with the family. Engaging experience is not a priority here. The sienna`s steering delivers on this requirement partially. The steering is relaxed and straight-line stability is good. However, in town, it requires large driver inputs – not good.

The Sienna also has considerable body rolls that can be unnerving for you and your family. This requires you to be aware of your speed when entering corners. In this regard, the Honda Odyssey is far more sorted and well, a bit engaging too.

“On the highway, the Sienna is a serene machine, cruising effortlessly at 75 mph with barely a hint of road or wind noise infiltrating the cabin.” – Kelley Blue Book

Braking

The Toyota Sienna comes with disc brakes on all four wheels. Toyota has engineered a small buffer zone in the brake pedal travel so that unintended taps don’t disturb your family. However, once past the buffer, the brakes give a firm and reassuring response and stops the minivan in 184 feet from 70 mph if stomped on for long enough.

The stopping distance of 2018 Sienna is 3 feet less than Honda Odyssey but 4 feet more than Chrysler Pacifica. However, the cheaper Kia Sedona proves to be a star here. It takes a scant 167 feet – 10 feet less than closest rival Chrysler Pacifica to stop from 70 mph. All considered, the Sienna`s braking performance is average among the competition.

Car 70 mph to 0
Toyota Sienna 181 feet
Honda Odyssey 184 feet
Chrysler Pacifica 177 feet
Kia Sedona 167 feet

Hauling and towing capacity

Take a note at this section if you take family adventure seriously and plan to tow a tent trailer (camper trailer is out of reach as none of the contenders can tow more than 3600 pounds). Now, pardon us for that statement as there is not much to “note”. All the competitors including Toyota Sienna tow 3500 pounds. The only exception is Chrysler Pacifica at 3600 pounds – close competition indeed.

“Front-drive models are rated to tow up to 3,500 pounds but all-wheel drive variants aren’t rated for towing.” – Motortrend

Truck Towing Capacity
Toyota Sienna 3,500 Lbs
Honda Odyssey 3,500 Lbs
Chrysler Pacifica 3,600 Lbs
Kia Sedona 3,500 Lbs

Fuel Economy

7.5/10

We all know how important it is for a minivan to be fuel efficient. Money saved on fuel bills can be used for gifts for your kids. Thankfully, those expressionless Toyota engineers are also aware of this humane fact. In fact, 19 mpg in the city, 27 mpg on the highway and combined EPA rating of 22 mpg produced by Toyota are best in class numbers – shared with Honda Odyssey.

The Chrysler Pacifica trails these two narrowly at 18 mpg in city and 28 mpg on the highway for a combined EPA rating of 22 mpg. However, significantly less costly Kia Sedona proves most costly here. At 17 mpg in the city and 22 mpg on the highway for a combined EPA rating of 22 mpg, Sedona is the thirstiest contender here.

Car MPG (City/Hwy/Combined)
Toyota Sienna 19/27/22
Honda Odyssey 19/28/22
Chrysler Pacifica 18/28/22
Kia Sedona 17/22/19

Interior

6.6/10

“Toyota’s minivan features four LATCH points for child-safety seats, plenty of nooks and crannies up front for electronics and bags, and ample storage in back behind the third row.” – Kelley Blue Book

Why do we buy a minivan? Right, to ferry around a lot of people. That makes the interior the most important part of the equation. The Sienna interior has to accommodate eight (or seven depending on trim) souls in comfort, keep them cool and entertained and provide storage for their Knick-Knacks. Let’s see how the Sienna fares.

Seating and Comfort

The base Sienna L trim and top Limited trim is available with 7 seats. All other trims can seat 8 souls. The steering column tilts and can be adjusted for reach and that ensures everyone can have a perfect driving position. You can get heated steering wheels and front seats as an option. A three-zone air-conditioning keeps the cabin climate pleasant.

The large windows, apart from offering a great view of the landscape for your kids, allow plenty of harsh sunlight in the cabin. Thankfully, the second and third row gets sunshades from LE trim onwards. If you opt for SE trim and splurge to SE premium package, you also get power tilt/slide moonroof offering a splendid view of the celestial world above for your family.

On a less romantic note, the Sienna lacks the vacuum cleaner offered in odyssey – a boon in a minivan, especially after a long trip with kids. Coming to kids, Sienna does get conversation mirrors – a mirror to keep a view on those rear seats with naughty kids thinking daddy is busy driving.

Space matters, especially in a minivan!

The Toyota Sienna falls a little short of the Honda Odyssey and Chrysler Pacifica in the second and third-row room. However, it’s not really significant and even adults will not complain. Sienna has best in the class head, shoulder and hip room.

Car First Row Passenger Space

Toyota Sienna (41.0/40.5) (39.7/37.6) (38.3/36.3)
Honda Odyssey (40.7/40.9) (39.5/40.9) (38.3/38.1)
Chrysler Pacifica (40.1/41.1) (39.6/39.0) (38.7/36.5)
Kia Sedona (39.8/40.9) (39.4/41.1) (38.9/34.8)

The Sienna offers plenty of storage for all the occupants – door pockets, central cup holders on first and second row, double glove box etc. A deep rubbery bin between the driver and passenger seat offer a place to stow away not so glorious items (think diapers).

Cargo Volume

Toyota knows a large number of people have a large amount of luggage. With all seats up, you have 39 cubic feet of luggage space – largest among the competition. Sienna`s interior is flexible too as the last row can fold in 60/40 split. If you decide to fold away the last row completely, you will have 87 cubic feet to play with.

The second row can be folded and moved up to the front seats to get 150 cubic feet of storage space. However, if you want to shift seriously large items, second-row seats can be removed completely. A caveat – in Sienna, getting rid of second-row seats is not as easy as Chrysler Pacifica (a press of the button does the job in Pacifica).

Car All Seats Up Last Row Folded Second and Third Rows Folded
Toyota Sienna 39 87 150
Honda Odyssey 33 89 145

How about some entertainment on the go? (Infotainment System)

When you hit the highway with all your loved ones, music is needed to complement the cool free wind and sunshine. It’s the part of van culture since the iconic VW Camper days. Toyota offers Entune 3.0 multimedia system as standard across the lineup to fulfill this basic need and offers connected navigation scout link and moving maps.

However, if your folks enjoy entertainment privately, the Sienna LE, SE, and XLE get Entune audio plus as standard. The Entune audio plus get Wi-Fi Connect offering 4G LTE connection to five mobile devices. Those fancying their own mobile concert hall can get Sienna in SE and XLE trim and option them with Entune 3.0 Premium JBL (standard on Limited trim).

On a less positive note – Android Auto and Apple Carplay are missing. Apart from these, you also get:

  • Five USB ports covering all three rows
  • Updated Rear Seat Entertainment to include streaming capability for Android devices
  • Bird’s Eye View monitor (available on Limited Premium grade)
  • 2-inch TFT multi-information display

Exterior

7.5/10

“A minivan is meant to get from point A to point B with the fewest possible spills, tantrums, and potty breaks, not to swivel heads like a red Ferrari. Still, the Chrysler Pacifica and Honda Odyssey manage to infuse their people-moving boxes with considerably more style.” – caranddriver

The Toyota Sienna from outside looks, well, like a minivan. The large front lower grills, sculpted bonnet and swept back headlights jazz up the looks a bit. However, the side profile is a typical minivan with large glass house and upright D-Pillars.

Typical of minivans, Sienna gets large sliding doors and the door rails are hidden. The fog lamp is available from SE trim onwards. The L and LE trim gets simple 6 spoke alloy wheels while the top of the line Platinum trim rides on 19-inch, 10 spoke machined alloy wheel. A range of color palette is available.

Dimension and Weight

The Sienna is slightly smaller in length compared to the Odyssey and Pacifica and will fit in your garage slightly easily. However, it’s widest in its class. Its height is average. The Sienna also has best in class ground clearance and if optioned with AWD, this minivan will cover some rough grounds. The Sienna is among the heaviest in class.

Vehicle Length Width Height Ground Clearance Weight
Toyota Sienna 228.9 79.9 76.2 10.6 4560
Honda Odyssey 237.9 79.4 77.4 8.6 4507
Chrysler Pacifica 239.5 80.0 74.0 8.6 4330
Kia Sedona 243.7 79.9 77.3 9.4 4443

Safety

7.9/10

Toyota is one of the most trusted brands and they stand true to the reputation. Segment-exclusive active safety features are bundled in Toyota Safety Sense – P (TSS-P) as standard across all the variants. Toyota Safety Sense – P has:

  • Forward-Collision Warning
  • Automated Emergency Braking
  • Lane-Departure Warning and Assist
  • Automatic High-Beams
  • Adaptive Cruise Control

However, if something unfortunate does happen, the Sienna is fully loaded with a host of passive safety features including the all-row Roll-sensing Side Curtain Airbags. The 2017 Sienna got 5-star crash test rating from NHTSA and 2018 Sienna will certainly not degrade.

Toyotas are known worldwide for being as reliable as a car can get. Many Toyota Siennas can still be found on the road with upward of 250k miles with all original major components. Coupled with Toyotas great aftersales and low depreciation, your money is spent safely.

Competition

Toyota Sienna vs Honda Odyssey

The Odyssey is similarly priced but has Android Auto and Apple Carplay. Odyssey also offers some innovative features like the hugely practical vacuum cleaner and has more legroom in all three rows. However, Sienna is a smarter investment as it depreciates slower and fulfills all the important criteria. Also, availability of AWD is a USP for Sienna.

Toyota Sienna vs Chrysler Pacifica

The Chrysler Pacifica is also similarly priced and offers more premium interiors. Plus all the seats fold electrically for great convenience. Chrysler Pacifica will impress you if looks are important with its sleek chrome trimmed window line and sweeping day-time running lamps. Although Pacifica is more luxurious, the Sienna comes with the reliability of Toyota brand and has class exclusive all-wheel drive.

Toyota Sienna vs Kia Sedona

The Kia Sedona is slightly smaller and costs less than all the competitors for similarly equipped trim and the looks of Sedona will surely impress some. Kia also has best in class braking performance by a wide margin. However, its fuel economy is disappointing and over the long run, Sienna will cost less due to its slow depreciation.

Final Verdict

The Sienna is an honest vehicle that does what it’s built for excellently. This minivan will accommodate all your family in comfort and their luggage too. The smooth and efficient powertrain is just what a minivan should have. Availability of all-wheel drive is a huge boon to anyone living in snow-affected areas. All this is backed by Toyotas excellent reliability and aftersales.

However, Toyota`s infotainment lacks apple car play and android auto – odyssey and Pacifica offers these. Sienna also lacks the well-polished driving manners of the Honda Odyssey while the Pacifica proves to be decidedly more luxurious.

All in all, Odyssey will make your transition from hot hatch to a minivan easy with its excellent driving characteristics. Pacifica is better if all-out luxury is what you are looking for in a minivan. The Toyota Sienna – it’s a distilled form of what a minivan should be – spacious, comfortable, efficient, safe and decidedly more cost-effective over the long run.
