Engine

7.2/10

“The 2017 Toyota Sienna offers a comfortable ride with surprising power for a minivan. The new eight-speed automatic transmission shifts smoothly, and its brakes are strong. It has composed handling and good suspension. Responsive steering makes for a controlled ride. However, the ride is rough with the sport-tuned SE trim, and the engine can get noisy when pushed hard.”- cars.usnews

Engine and Transmission

Sienna’s engine received an upgrade for the 2017 iteration. The new 3.5L V6 engine delivers 296 horsepower in addition to 263 lb.-ft. of torque. An 8-speed automatic transmission mode replaces the earlier 6-speed automatic transmission mode. Toyota Sienna has the maximum power and torque among its class rivals.

The closest competitor to the 2017 Toyota Sienna is Chrysler Pacifica Minivan with 287 horsepower and 262 lb.-ft. of torque. The ride boasts a 3.6L 6-cylinder engine coupled with a 9-speed automatic transmission mode. Honda Odyssey and Kia Sedona offer the least engine power and torque of 248 hp and 248 lb.-ft., respectively in the class.

Acceleration

2017 Toyota Sienna shoots to 60 MPH in 7 seconds, faster than the Chrysler Pacifica and the Kia Sedona. However, Honda Odyssey offers a better 0-60 MPH acceleration, requiring 6.6 seconds only.

2017 Toyota Sienna covers a quarter-mile in 15.5 seconds. This is better only to 15.9 seconds required by the Kia Sedona. Chrysler Pacifica and Honda Odyssey require 15.1 and 15 seconds, respectively for doing the same.

Ride and Handling

In addition to being slow, 2017 Toyota Sienna is unkindly loud. There are all sorts of noise in the cabin, ranging from engine sound to vibrations from bumps on the road. Although the ride packs a robust 3.5L V6 powertrain, the heavy AWD depresses it down. The 8-speed automatic transmission isn’t as responsive, as it needs to be. Nonetheless, the 2017 Toyota Sienna is an excellent option for families living in places receiving heavy snowfall. The ride is excellent to traverse snowy streets and roads. Furthermore, the ride offers a composed, comfy ride on highways with a better level of bump absorption. Despite being a longer ride, 2017 Toyota Sienna offers a great level of maneuverability. This is probably due to the small turning circle, which is, in fact, one of the smallest circles in the class.

Braking

While the front brake in 2017 Sienna measures 12.2 inches, the rear one is bigger, 12.9 inches. The front brake is smallest in the competition, while the rear one is only smaller to the 13 inches boasted by the Chrysler Pacifica Minivan.

2017 Toyota Sienna comes to a complete halt at a distance of 128 feet, when decelerated from 60 MPH. This is better than the 131 feet offered by the Chrysler Pacifica Minivan. While Honda Odyssey comes to a full stop at 127 feet, Kia Sedona requires 125 feet.

Fuel Economy

7.3/10

Front-wheel-drive models of the 2017 Toyota Sienna offers 19 and 27 mpg in city and highway, respectively. The ride offers an overall combined fuel economy of 22 mpg. On the other hand, all-wheel-drive models offer a combined fuel economy of 20 mpg.

Chrysler Pacifica Minivan and Honda Odyssey both offers 22 mpg of combined fuel economy. Kia Sedona, on the other hand, offers a combined fuel economy of 20 mpg. The ride offers 18 mpg in cities and 24 mpg on highways.

Interior

7.0/10

“Lower trim levels of the Sienna are attractively decked out with high-quality fabric upholstery, while higher-end models get leather along with simulated wood cabin accents. Materials quality is very good, and the dash design is modern and attractive. Seating is plush, and there's abundant storage space along with user-friendly controls.” - Edmunds

Seating and Comfort

2017 Toyota Sienna offers excellent 41 inches of headroom in the front seat, maximum amongst the competition. Front legroom offered by the minivan is 40.5 inches. In the second row, Sienna delivers 39.7 and 37.6 inches of headroom and legroom, respectively.

The 2017 incarnation of the Toyota Sienna has airy 38.3 inches of headroom in the 3rd row. However, the legroom is limited to 36.3 inches. This is obviously better than the 34.8 inches offered by the Kia Sedona. Honda Odyssey offers the most 3rd-row legroom of 42.4 inches.

Infotainment System

2017 Toyota Sienna features a simplistic Entune infotainment system. It comes with a standard 6.1-inch touchscreen with intuitive navigation and easy-to-use menus. Other than the touchscreen, users can use the infotainment using a number of physical buttons. Bluetooth connectivity, a single USB port, and a rearview camera are standard.

Optional upgrades for the infotainment system includes advanced smartphone integration and Driver Easy Speak feature. The latter feature projects the driver voice to the third-row speakers via a hands-free microphone. Another optional feature is the DVD entertainment system. It comes with a 16.4-inch screen with an SD card slot, RCA, and HDMI inputs.

Interior Features

In the standard configuration, 2017 Toyota Sienna is able to accommodate 7 persons. Some trims of the available 8 trims flaunt a middle seat in the second row, expanding the seating to accommodate 8 persons. Key 2017 Toyota Sienna interior features include:

  • Full set of LATCH child-seat connectors
  • Deeply mounted lower anchors
  • High-grade cabin
  • Leather seats with contrast stitching on the dashboard
  • Glossy wood panels
  • Soft, textured plastics

Cargo Capacity

In addition to its best-in-segment cargo capacity of 150 cubic feet, 2017 Toyota Sienna boasts a double glove box. The ride boasts floor-mounted cup holders in the 2nd row. In the third row, Sienna minivan features two cup holders on each side and a small covered storage bin.

2017 Toyota Sienna comes with 39.1 cubic feet of storage space behind the 3rd row. With the 3rd row folded, 2017 Toyota Sienna has 87.1 cubic feet of storage space to spare.

Exterior

6.6/10

“Compared to the Honda Odyssey with its "lightning-bolt" side-window treatment or the Kia Sedona and new Chrysler Pacifica with their progressive stances, the Toyota Sienna appears more conservative to our eyes. Like all matters of taste, this isn't a bad thing, and whether the Sienna looks the best among its peers or is lost in the crowd will be subject to your eyes.”- Kelley Blue Book

Dimension and Weight

2017 Toyota Sienna is a bulky ride with a total curb weight of 4415 lbs. This is merely 1 lb. more than the 4414 lbs. flaunted by the Kia Sedona. Sienna flaunts a length, width, and height of 200.2, 78.1, and 70.7 inches, respectively.

It shoots to 60 MPH in 7.6 seconds and covers a quarter-mile in 15.9 seconds. Kia Sedona is able to come to a complete halt in 125 feet, best in the league. Unfortunately, the ride has the lowest combined fuel economy of 20 mpg. Sedona is merely 1 lb. less than that of the Toyota Sienna. Sedona has plenty of space in the front 2 rows, but mere 34.8 inches of legroom in the 3rd row.

Final Verdict

2017 Toyota Sienna is the only minivan with an optional all-wheel-drive system. Furthermore, the ride has powerful cargo hauling abilities and spacious seating. Nonetheless, Sienna rivals offer a quicker and quieter operation.

Also, these rides are slightly less expensive than the 2017 Toyota Sienna. But then again, for those living in places receiving heavy snowfall and not-so-well road conditions, 2017 Toyota Sienna is an opportune pick.
