We Recommend

We would straight away recommend the PreRunner trim with a 4WD drivetrain and a V6 powerhouse that will make the car more capable than it already is, and the extra power would always come in handy. The space constraint is not better in either trim, but the other offerings might just make up for it.

2014 Toyota Tacoma Engine and Performance

9.0/10

The 2014 model of the Tacoma has two engine options on offer that transfer power either to the rear or all wheels of the car depending on the variant and the drivetrain chosen. The truck features a 2.7L I-4 engine that produces 159 hp of power and 180 lb.-ft of torque or a 4.0L V6 engine that churns out 236 hp of engine power and 266 lb.-ft of torque.

The powerful and bigger V6 engine provides better performance figures and manages to accelerate from a standstill to the 60 MPH mark in 7.9 seconds. The pickup race to the quarter-mile mark in 14.3 seconds, making it faster than the Ridgeline in the department. It has a top speed of 141 MPH. The transmission unit that the Tacoma is offered in is either a 5-speed-automatic or a 6-speed-manual unit.

The Nissan Frontier makes use of a similar 4.0L V6 power unit but manages to churn out more power and torque output at 261 hp and 281 lb.-ft, respectively. The Honda Ridgeline also uses a V6 engine that produces 250 hp and 247 lb.-ft of torque. But even though it has a more powerful engine, Honda is marginally slower than the other two in both the acceleration test and quarter-mile run. All these trucks use a 5-speed-automatic transmission as standard.

2014 Toyota Tacoma Interior

9.0/10

The cabin of the Tacoma feels like it was made by people who knew what they were doing. It feels like it was made for a pickup truck with more focus on practicality. The cabin features some luxurious specifications like a dual-tone dashboard and infotainment system. The front seats are positioned high and feel as if they have been curated for visibility. The front seats offer ample space and comfort, although the rear seats feel constrained with restricted space. The Toyota Tacoma can seat up to four passengers and has a towing capacity of 6,500 lbs, which makes the Tacoma a buyer’s favorite in the segment.

2014 Toyota Tacoma Final Verdict

The 2014 Toyota Tacoma Access Cab is a very capable and powerful pickup truck on offer. It is down on power when compared to its American counterparts, but it does have its own pros and shining spots. It is a very fuel-efficient truck, and it is quite feature-loaded as well. Since it is a Toyota, there is a good chance of this truck lasting longer than you. All in all, the 2014 Tacoma makes for a decent choice in the segment.
