Thanks to its impeccable reliability scores, the 2015 Toyota Tacoma Access Cab is one of the most popular pick-up trucks in the compact pick-up truck segment. It is also quite practical and its unrivaled off-road capability makes it stand out in the segment. Priced at $21,865 for the base trim and $36,705 for the full-blown version, the Tacoma offers excellent towing abilities. The 2015 model year does not get any major updates but it does get a few upgrades. The TRD Pro trim has been introduced but the Regular Cab version of the pick-up is no longer available.

Expert Review, Pricing Analysis and Buying Guide

The Toyota Tacoma pick-up truck features two powertrain options; a 2.7-liter four-cylinder with 159 horsepower, and a 4.0-liter V6 with 236 horsepower. The transmission duties are taken care of by either five-speed automatic transmissions or six-speed manual transmission. As standard, the pick-up truck comes with a rear-wheel drivetrain while the four-wheel-drive system is optional. This robust Toyota pickup truck goes up against its rivals such as the Chevrolet Colorado, Ford F - 150, and the GMC Canyon.

The 2015 Toyota Tacoma is available in three different variants; Access Cab I4, Access Cab I4 PreRunner, Access Cab V6, Access Cab V6 PreRunner, and Access Cab V6 TRD Pro. It comes with two engine options: a 2.7-liter four-cylinder that generates 159 horsepower, and a 4.0-liter V6 that generates 236 horsepower.

A five-speed manual transmission and rear-wheel drive are standard with all trims. The Tacoma also offers a four and a five-speed automatic transmission, a six-speed manual, and a four-wheel drivetrain is optional. Features such as a 6.1-inch touch screen, a CD player, a USB port, Bluetooth connectivity, air conditioning, and power windows with door locks.

We Recommend

Thanks to the standard 6.1-inch touch screen, the base trim offers excellent value for money. Also, all models can tow a minimum of 3,400 pounds which makes even the base trim quite capable. It comes with many standard features such as power windows and door locks, air conditioning, eight-bed tie-down cleats, and a limited-slip rear differential that add to the value aspect of the trim.

Engine and Performance

The 2015 Toyota Tacoma features two powertrain options to suit your needs. The base engine is a 2.7-liter four-cylinder unit that generates 159 horsepower, it feels quite zippy. The larger and the second engine option is a 4.0-liter V6 that can generate 236 horsepower. While a five-speed manual transmission and rear-wheel drive are standard, four- and five-speed automatic transmissions and also a six-speed manual transmission are optional. While some will certainly like slotting the manual transmission themselves, the automatic transmission is also quick and smooth to operate.

The 4-cylinder engine is adequate for loitering around in the city and carrying some loads occasionally. The V6 engine provides a lot of passing power along with low-end torque to crawl within the city limits. The suspension is set up on the stiffer side, however, the Tacoma feels quite robust in the way it drives. It gets past 60 MPH from a standstill in about 7.7 seconds and manages to cross through the quarter-mile mark in 16.1 seconds. Its top speed of 115 MPH is not particularly impressive.

In comparison, the more expensive Ford F - 150 is the fastest pick-up trick in the segment. Thus, if you want the best-performing pick-up here, you have to stick with Ford. The more powerful engine and a better gearbox give it an edge over its competitors in terms of performance. The Chevrolet Colorado is not far behind and it costs much less than the Ford F-150.

Fuel Economy

Being the only pick-up in its class that weighs about 6800 lbs, the Toyota Tacoma certainly does not aim to be the most fuel-efficient pick-up truck. Thus, it offers 16 mpg in the city, 21 mpg over on the highway, and a combined fuel economy figure of 18 mpg. While the engine is quite efficient, the heavy curb weight does take away some of the efficiency benefits. However, the performance numbers that Tacoma offers do not justify the poor fuel economy for the price.

Ford seems to have found the perfect mix of mileage and performance. Thus. the most efficient pick-up truck here is the Ford F-150 which offers 22 mpg of combined fuel economy figure. Its light curb weight and efficient motor help you save more in terms of the overall running costs. The GMC Canyon on the other hand provides very similar fuel economy figures in comparison to the Chevrolet Colorado.

The Toyota Tacoma’s cabin can seat up to four people in relative comfort. The front seats provide good overall comfort and support making it easy to undertake long-haul trips in them. As it is a pick-up truck, the dashboard has been designed to exude rugged appeal. The materials used on the inside are mostly hard plastics and it is not easy to find any soft-touch materials. Thus, the cabin feels built on a budget and lags behind its rivals in terms of offering a premium feel. The overall visibility from the inside is great thanks to the high seating position.

The rear bench can seat 2 people but overall support and cushion. The length of the cabin is enough to fit 2 people comfortably on the rear seats but there is still not much legroom to stretch out. However, you will never find yourself complaining about the headroom or shoulder room even if you are seated at the rear. There are plenty of storage spaces inside the cabin to store small items and water bottles. Overall, the cabin feels built to last but lacks the refinement and fitness that its rivals offer.

In terms of the payload capacity, the Toyota Tacoma lacks behind all its rivals. However, the trunk capacity is more than what the GMC Canyon offers, making it easy to store luggage inside the trunk compartment. The Ford F - 150 provides the most spacious cabin along with the best payload capacity in its class. It is followed by the GMC Canyon that feels a bit more cramped than the other in the second-row seats. Major interior features include-

  • 4-Way Passenger Seat -inc: Manual Recline and Fore/Aft Movement
  • Remote Keyless Entry
  • Automatic Air Conditioning
  • Lockable Glove Box
  • Driver Foot Rest
  • Full Cloth Headliner
  • Cargo Space Lights
  • Steering wheel controls
  • Front reading lamps
  • Leather-wrapped steering wheel
  • Electrochromic rearview mirror

How intuitive is the 2015 Toyota Tacoma’s infotainment unit?

For the 2015 model year, Tacoma now offers a 6.1-inch touchscreen infotainment display as standard. It comes with features such as a CD player, a USB port, Bluetooth connectivity, satellite radio, a rearview camera, auxiliary inputs, and navigation. The infotainment interface is quite basic and user-friendly. It features multiple physical buttons and knobs for the audio and Bluetooth controls. Also, the Entune App Suite features smartphone apps like Pandora and iHeartRadio.

  • 6.1-inch touchscreen
  • USB connection
  • Speed sensitive volume control
  • CD Player
  • Satellite radio
  • Bluetooth
  • HD Radio
  • Rearview camera

All pick-up trucks are meant to look rugged but they can come out as a bit boring sometimes. However, Tacoma comes with a lot of TRD elements to break the monotony of the typical Toyota design philosophy. While it is no pageant queen, it does look imposing and stands out with its subtle yet distinctive looks. The massive grille at the front and the smartly-designed headlights help to enhance the overall appeal of the pick-up truck. From the sides, the clean and simple profile renders a balanced look. At the rear, things look a bit too simple with vertical tail lamps.

In comparison, at 4140 lbs., the Toyota Tacoma is the lightest pick-up truck here. On the other hand, the Ford F - 150 offers the best in class road presence, thanks to its larger physical dimensions. The Tacoma is the smallest of the bunch followed by the GMC Canyon. The Ford F-150 also looks much more premium and attractive than all its rivals while the Colorado begs for a design update. Few major exterior features include-

  • All-Season Tires
  • Clearcoat Paint
  • Rocker Panel Extensions
  • Fixed Rear Window w/Defroster
  • Light Tinted Glass
  • Variable Intermittent Wipers w/Heated Wiper Park
  • Black Grille
  • Running Boards (Optional)
  • Front Fog Lamps

The Toyota Tacoma comes with plenty of basic safety features as standard. It boasts features such as automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, and lane-keep assist. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has given the 2015 Tacoma four out of five stars.

However, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has not named the 2015 Toyota Tacoma a Top Safety Pick+. The Double Cab models received three stars in the frontal crash test and five stars in the side crash test. Thus, Tacoma needs more advanced safety features as rivals offer more safety kits as standard. Other salient safety features include:

  • Driver and passenger airbags
  • Electronic stability control
  • Child safety locks
  • Traction control
  • Emergency trunk release
  • Lane-keep assist
  • Rear-view backup camera
Final Verdict

The Toyota Tacoma is immensely capable of taking you off the beaten path. Its excellent reliability ratings and Toyota’s impressive after-sales service make it stand out in the segment. Thus, there is no doubt that Tacoma does everything well with whatever a pick-up should be able to do. However, when it comes to other things like the interior, fuel efficiency, or ride quality, the Tacoma Access Cab feels unrefined. There are rivals that offer much more for the price and thus the Tacoma requires an overall update.
