The Toyota Tacoma has been in the automotive market for a very long time, and it has been one of the best-selling pickup trucks in the states as well as in Canada. The Tacoma promises to outlive its owner, running for decades with robust mechanicals, sturdy build quality, and solid performance. The 2022 Tacoma brings in a lot of improvements over the 2021 Model. However, there is no major overhaul in design for 2022 MY.

We Recommend

There is only one trim of the 2022 Toyota Tacoma Double Cab TRD Off-Road. We recommend taking the four-wheel-drive configuration for extensive off-road use. It comes for a premium of only $3,000 over the Two-wheel drive model but will work wonders when the road ends and you get into some tricky situations but if you are low on your budget and will mainly use it for weight hauling on roads then the 2WD option is not bad either.

2022 Toyota Tacoma Double Cab TRD Off-Road Release Date

We will definitely get the 2022 Toyota Tacoma TRD Off-Road version of the Tacoma series but wait patiently as nothing about the product is out yet, so hold your seats and tighten your seat belts as we might get some interesting news about this product near about 2021 fall and see the actual product rolling down to the authorized dealership around the 2022 April.

2022 Toyota Tacoma TRD Off-Road Double Cab Engine and Performance

9.0/10

The 2022 Toyota Tacoma Double Cab TRD Off-Road gets a 3.5L naturally aspirated V6 under the hood that pumps out 278 horses and 265 lb.-ft. of torque. The figures are good considering pickup truck standards. The engine comes with a Dual Overhead Camshaft setup (DOHC) that helps in optimizing power delivery without compromising on fuel economy. The engine is mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission and can be had in both 2WD and 4WD drivetrain configurations. The V6 is powerful enough to tow 6700 pounds when properly equipped and an extra 1440 pounds of payload.

The V6 engine feels refined and offers enough punch from low RPMs, unlike the feeble Inline-4 that comes in base trim. The torque is also distributed throughout the Rev band. The vehicle also comes equipped with CRAWL control along with a low-range gearbox on the 4X4 model. The transfer case has a ratio of 2.57:1 in the low range. With massive torque being sent to the wheels of the 2022 Tacoma TRD Off-Road, traversing steep inclines or crawling over trail obstacles is surprisingly easy.

The Nissan Frontier is the fastest truck hitting 0-60MPH in 7.2 seconds; this is pretty fast for a brawny pickup. The Toyota Tacoma TRD Off-Road hits 0-60MPH in 7.7 seconds, while the GMC Canyon AT4 takes the longest time of 9.0 seconds. Nonetheless, these trucks are meant to conquer the off-roads and rough terrains; not win drag races. Rivals offer bigger and better engines and their off-road equipment seems to be on the better side as well when compared to the Toyota. However, Toyota offers even better off-road-oriented trims if this isn’t enough for you.

2022 Toyota Tacoma TRD Off-Road Double Cab Fuel Economy

4.0/10

With a 3.5 L naturally aspirated V6 engine, one would expect the 2022 Toyota Tacoma Double Cab TRD Off-Road to be a gas guzzler. But the Toyota makes us pleasantly surprised with its fuel efficiency. The Tacoma TRD Off-Road returns 19 MPG in the city, which is the best in class, and 24 MPG on the highway which turns to around 21 MPG combined. With a massive 21.1-gallon fuel tank it delivers 380 miles in the city, 464 miles on the highway, and 422 miles combined.

With some impressive performance figures, Toyota Tacoma TRD Off-Road also shines in the fuel economy segment. It claims the highest in the segment 21 mpg of the economy in the combined conditions whereas every other rival manages to travel 19 miles in a gallon of gas. Chevy Colorado & GMC Canyon claim the best economy of 24 mpg in highway riding but it’s just one mpg more than the Tacoma. Fuel numbers aren’t the only good thing about the Tacoma, it also has the biggest 21.1 gallons of a fuel tank which grants it the 485 & 443 miles of range on highways and combined driving. Other vehicles in the segment also get 21 gallons of a tank which is marginally lower than that of Tacoma.

2022 Toyota Tacoma TRD Off-Road Double Cab Interior

3.0/10

The interiors of the 2022 Toyota Tacoma Double Cab TRD Off-Road are very well laid out. As standard, it can seat up to 5 people in two rows. The seats offer a commanding view with good lumbar and thigh support. However, it is a bit difficult to climb into the cabin as it sits very high from the ground. The seats also have good bolstering and you are also greeted by lots of switches and knobs to control the infotainment and other functions.

The front row does offer enough legroom but the rear seats are best left for kids or more for storage. As standard, the vehicle comes equipped with Dual-Zone automatic climate control and cloth upholstery but you can option it with a Sunroof, Heated front seats, and leather upholstery. Being a truck, hard Plastics have been used on the dashboard and on the door panels to improve its ruggedness and to make it utilitarian.

How intuitive is the infotainment system?

The 2022 Toyota Tacoma TRD Off-Road Double Cab comes with an 8.0-inch infotainment display as standard. The display is crisp and the resolution is good enough to match modern-day tablets. The infotainment will either be equipped with the Entune system or will get the new Human Machine Interface system; we have to wait and see. Moreover, it supports Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The system also has Bluetooth connectivity as well as inbuilt navigation.

Toyota has confirmed that the Human Machine Interface is in the works and will be 5 times faster than the current Entune System. It will most likely be launched in the fourth quarter of 2021. 2022 Toyota Tacoma TRD Off-Road Double Cab Exterior

9.0/10

The 2022 Toyota Tacoma Double Cab TRD Off-Road will be a carry-over model. So there are no major changes to the exterior of the truck. The Tacoma has a rugged and beastly appearance and it has stood the test of time. The knobby tires with the 16-inch rims add to the monstrous look. The jacked-up suspension and the rugged front engine guard show off its off-road prowess.

There are some TRD specific styling and badging all over the truck. The alloy rims to get the TRD branding. It has loads of road presence and the overall look is pretty imposing and aggressive. Opting for the Off-road variant should get you textured black fender flares, Lockable rear differential, Bilstein shock absorbers, and an advanced off-road traction control system with multiple terrain settings and rock crawl. The Tacoma TRD Offroad is likely to get a set of new LED headlights with daytime running lights and black bezel LED fog lights.

2022 Toyota Tacoma TRD Off-Road Double Cab Competition

3.0/10

2022 Toyota Tacoma TRD Off-Road Double Cab vs 2022 Chevrolet Colorado Z71 Crew Cab

The Toyota Tacoma is a very reliable beast but it is not enough to compete with the Chevrolet Colorado. The Chevy has more power and torque, greater fuel efficiency, and better towing and payload capacities than the Tacoma. The Chevy is also able to handle quite a bit of off-roading and at the same time, it is $2,000 cheaper than the Tacoma. So the Chevy is the clear winner here.

2022 Toyota Tacoma TRD Off-Road Double Cab vs 2022 Nissan Frontier Crew Cab PRO-4X Cab

The Toyota Tacoma is much more reliable than the Nissan. It also has better off-roading capabilities and offers a higher fuel economy than Nissan. Though the Frontier is more powerful than the Tacoma, the latter also boasts robust mechanicals and better interiors than the Nissan. Tacoma is a more practical vehicle as it has the better ground clearance and higher towing capacity The seating comfort is also better in Toyota. So the Tacoma takes the crown over here.

2022 Toyota Tacoma TRD Off-Road Double Cab vs 2022 GMC Canyon AT4 Crew Cab

The GMC Canyon Crew Cab AT4 is much more powerful than the Tacoma. But it doesn’t accelerate as fast as the Tacoma. The GMC Canyon humiliates Tacoma by its payload and towing capacities. The GMC also has the better interior quality and is more spacious than the Tacoma. The Canyon is also able to handle quite a bit of off-roading and at the same time, it is absolutely bonkers to look at with its stunning headlights and exterior design. So the GMC is the clear winner here.

2022 Toyota Tacoma TRD Off-Road Double Cab Final Verdict

The 2022 Toyota Tacoma Double Cab TRD Off-Road is practical, reliable, robust, and with serious off-road capabilities, it offers the perfect balanced package for a customer. The Toyota also has incredible resale value and will be a worthy investment. But when the GMC Canyon AT4 comes into the picture, you need to do some serious rethinking. The Canyon produces more power, more torque has the more towing capacity, has more payload capacity, and offers more fuel economy at the same time. It is absolutely bonkers to look at due to its sizzling headlamps and sleek bodywork. The Canyon AT4 is also a monster in off-roading like the Tacoma. It also has insane resale values. So, considering all these factors, we recommend you to check out the GMC Canyon AT4 once.
