Among all the well-known carmakers Toyota’s Tacoma has been an age-old player for quite a long time now and enjoys prolonged popularity among pick-ups. The Tacoma goes against the likes of Chevrolet Colorado Crew Cab, GMC Canyon Crew Cab, and Ford Ranger SuperCrew. For 2022 MY, the truck gets an increased lift in suspension, meaner grille, and revised headlight design. Additionally, the wheels below have been updated.

Which trim should you buy?

The 2022 Tacoma TRD Sport comes in a single trim. Toyota offers a couple of options in transmission, drivetrain, and bed length. The truck can be bought in RWD or AWD depending on the preference. And in the case of transmission, it can be fitted with a 6-speed manual or automatic. The bed has a couple of options too, a 5” or 6” bed can be bought accordingly. For further customization, there are 5 additional packages. The additional packages have added or upgraded features that can be used to enhance the truck.

However, we recommend you fit the truck with a manual transmission and AWD drivetrain. For further practicality, consider spending a few grand on TRD Premium Sport Package and Technology Package. Both packages bring essential features. TRD Premium Package brings leather and heated front seats, navigation, premium audio, and more. While the Technology Package brings newer safety features.

Release Date

The 2022 Toyota Tacoma Double Cab TRD Sport is slated to enter production in November this year, with the dealerships receiving their first lot by January 2022.

2022 Toyota Tacoma TRD Sport Double Cab Engine and Performance

8.5/10

There are two engines fitted across the trims of the Tacoma - a 2.7L inline-4 and a 3.5L V6. The TRD Sport trim of the Tacoma gets its power from a 3.5L Atkinson-cycle V6 engine. A 6-speed manual transmission is fitted standard. You can also get a 6-speed automatic for free of cost. Talking about the drivetrain, the truck comes standard with RWD configuration, but if you spend a few grand, an AWD drivetrain can be fitted to the truck.

The engine generates 278 hp of power and 265 foot-pounds of torque. The engine helps the truck with 7 seconds 0-60 MPH time and a ¼ mile within 15.4 seconds. The truck, with the V6 engine, has an impressive towing capacity of 6,700 pounds and a payload capacity of 1,395 pounds. The engine behavior is generally smooth. The power delivered is fast and the engine feels responsive. It quickly catches pace and glides smoothly at high speeds. The manual transmission works great, it's smooth and has minimal lag.

The Tacoma TRD Sport’s engine offers the lowest power and performance. Due to the low power, the performance and towing capacity are lower than the others. On the contrary, the GMC Canyon’s engine offers the best power and as a result, its towing capacity is the best among all the trucks. The Ford Ranger is powered by a turbocharged inline-4 engine that offers better performance to the Canyon but falls short in towing capacity.

2022 Toyota Tacoma TRD Sport Double Cab Fuel Economy

4.8/10

With increasing time, many technologies have emerged which contributed to engine efficiency. However, Toyota has chosen to stick with a traditional Atkinson-Cycle engine that helps the engine with increased efficiency. But the engine sacrifices power and performance for increased efficiency. The truck manages to offer 19 MPG in the city and 24 MPG on the highway. Equipped with a 21.1-gallon fuel capacity, the range offered by the truck is 401 and 506 on the city and highways, respectively.

V6 engines are known to be low in fuel efficiency and that is evident if you look at the numbers in the table. The Ford Ranger is powered by a turbocharged inline-4 engine that shows up with the best mileage numbers of 26 MPG. But it misses out in range due to the smaller fuel tank capacity. Among V6 engines, the Tacoma and Chevrolet Colorado Crew Cab offers the best efficiency and with a similarly-sized tank, both trucks deliver almost 500 miles of combined range.

2022 Toyota Tacoma TRD Sport Double Cab Interior

5.7/10

The interior has undergone major changes in 2022 MY of the TRD Sport. Compared to the previous model, the interior now is built with better quality materials. The cabin offered inside the truck is pragmatic, feature-packed, and comfortable. The cabin can seat 5 people. The front seats have plenty of room while the rear lacks adequate room. The seats are covered with good quality fabrics while most of the cabin materials are composed of hard plastics. Standard features inside the truck include 10/4-way power adjusted seats for driver and passenger, dual-zone automatic AC with air filter, 4.2” color MID, leather-wrapped steering wheel, and many more.

The cargo capacity of the TRD Sport depends on the size of the bed you opt for. The standard 5-feet bed offers a cargo capacity of 60.5 ft3. An additional $500 will get you the 6-feet bed that offers 73.7 ft3.

All the trucks offer 5-seating accommodation. The GMC Canyon offers the best passenger space both at the front and back. In terms of cargo capacity, the Ford Ranger is the best, followed by the Colorado and Canyon with each of them managing space above 40 cu.-ft. Though Tacoma’s cargo capacity isn’t available, we expect it to be lesser than the others because of the smaller body.

Standout interior features:

  • 10/6-way power adjusted driver and passenger seats w/ 2-way lumbar support
  • 4.2” color MID w/ outside temperature display
  • Dual-zone automatic AC w/ air filter
  • Leather-wrapped tilt-telescopic steering wheel
  • Remote keyless entry system w/ panic function
  • HomeLink universal transceiver

What’s there to keep you entertained?

The infotainment system inside the TRD Sport’s cabin is as good as any other Toyota vehicle. The interface is smooth and the control is user-friendly. Compared to 2021 MY of the truck, the buttons show an improvement. Standard infotainment features include an 8” touch LCD twinned with 6-speaker audio. For smartphone pairing and ease of access, the system comes loaded with Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, Amazon Alexa, and Bluetooth services (HandsFree and audio streaming). Other features like SiriusXM and Wi-Fi come standard.

If you want to fit a system that offers a better audio system and more infotainment features, Toyota offers a Premium Audio and Navigation Package for $1340. It brings a 6-speaker audio system by JBL. Premium features like HD Radio and dynamic navigation with voice command come within the package.

2022 Toyota Tacoma TRD Sport Double Cab Exterior

9.5/10

When you look at the TRD Sport, you’ll notice how enticing the truck looks. It’s charming, big and handsome. Looking at the truck’s modern design language, it’s evident how Toyota is as good as the American automakers when it comes to pickups. The exterior exhibits muscular body lines, a bulky physique, and a mean fascia. The 2022 model year brings small changes in its appearance. Compared to the previous model, the headlights look more prominent and now are decorated with bezels. As standard, the truck is fitted with LED headlights and DRLs which give the front fascia a classy look. The LED fog lamps below come standard fitted in the TRD Sport trim.

The back of the truck comprises LED tail lamps and a removable tailgate. Compared to the lower models, the TRD Sport comes with a honeycomb grille with bronze Toyota lettering. To contribute toward the sporty nature of the truck, skid plates are fitted at the front which comes in handy while operating the truck in challenging conditions. At the rear, a tail light integrated spoiler adds more charm.

The truck is significantly spiced by the newly fitted 17” bronze wheels which look good and easily attract attention. If you take the AWD variant of the truck, at the rear the truck is decorated with TRD 4X4 stickers. Lastly, the tailgate comes embossed with ‘TACOMA’ lettering. The TRD Sport trim is embellished with plenty of cosmetic upgrades that make it prominent and a pleasant truck to look at.

Apart from these, the truck comes loaded with Toyota Safety Sense that includes many active safety systems. 2022 Toyota Tacoma TRD Sport Double Cab Competition

2022 Toyota Tacoma Double Cab TRD Sport vs 2022 Ford Ranger SuperCrew

The Ford Ranger offers a better set of features and practicality. The turbocharged 2.3L inline-4 engine performs better and has a higher towing capacity as well. Additionally, it has a lighter body and smaller wheelbase which means better and easier handling. In terms of features, both are similar. However, Ford’s Ranger gains our recommendation because of better mileage, bigger cargo volume, and higher performance.

2022 Toyota Tacoma Double Cab TRD Sport vs 2022 Chevrolet Colorado Crew Cab

There are areas where both the trucks shine, but we recommend the Tacoma TRD Sport because of the better braking, fuel efficiency, and awesome off-road potential. Additionally, the Chevrolet Colorado Crew Cab comes with a lesser amount of standard features where the Tacoma stands tall. As standard Toyota packs the Tacoma with a diverse set of features and a plethora of safety tech as well.

2022 Toyota Tacoma Double Cab TRD Sport vs 2022 GMC Canyon Crew Cab

GMC’s Canyon is the most expensive truck among all. This is because of the vast number of features GMC offers. From standard features to optional. GMC offers a vast list of additional packages and options. Furthermore, the engine offers the best performance and towing potential. The cabin is feature-packed and spacious. The materials used feel premium and are top-notch in quality. It offers practicality, the Canyon is the ‘go anywhere truck’, the comfort it offers is unmatchable, compared to the stiffer ride quality of the Tacoma. However, if you’re looking for a seasoned player ready to go anywhere with unshakable reliability, the Tacoma is the one to go for.

2022 Toyota Tacoma TRD Sport Double Cab Final Verdict

The 2022 Toyota Tacoma Double Cab TRD Sport comes with many changes for the 2022 MY. From the revised design to updated wheels, the overall appearance has been improved. The engine inside offers a good amount of power and performance. The towing and payload capacity is respectable. It also shines in impressive MPG numbers. The handling is delightful and it is one of the best performers off-road. Moreover, the resale value of the truck is respectable, thus, making it an exceptional choice for a no-nonsense pickup.
