The Toyota Tundra with its build quality and utility has managed to attract a lot of customers in the past, and with the introduction of a new generation, it is certainly aiming to bring in more customers and admirers. The 2022 Toyota Tundra Double Cab is expected to be priced around $35,900 for the base variant. It will compete with the Ford F-150 SuperCab, GMC Sierra 1500 Double Cab, and the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Double Cab.

2022 Toyota Tundra Double Cab Features

Offered in 3 trims, the Tundra Double Cab is expected to be priced between $36K and $47K. The base SR trim is not offered in the AWD configuration. While the SR and the SR5 are reasonably priced, the Limited trim gets a massive price hike. Although, the amount of luxury features it adds makes the price seem worth it to some.

The SR5 trim seems like a good middle ground to us. It improves on the driving experience by including the automatic limited slip differential, and its increase of comfort features over the base SR is worth the price increase.

Release date

The 2022 Toyota Tundra Double Cab is expected to launch around mid-2021.

2022 Toyota Tundra Double Cab Engine and Performance

The all-new 2022 Toyota Tundra Double Cab is set to get an engine upgrade from the current 5.7 L naturally aspirated V8. Although some might claim the change to a 3.5 L twin-turbocharged V6 as a downgrade, it certainly isn’t the case. The only downgrading factors between these two engines are the number of cylinders and the displacement. With the twin-turbocharged V6 engine, the Tundra is all set to have over 400 hp and 410 lb-ft. of torque. This new twin-turbocharged V6 engine might be a tuned-up version of the one present in the Lexus LS500.

The engine could come mated to a 6-speed or an 8-speed torque converter transmission and the vehicle might get RWD and AWD options as well. The 0-60 mph timing is expected to be around the 7-second mark and the 2022 Tundra should be able to cover a quarter-mile distance in less than 13 seconds.

The engine in conjunction with the lighter body and engine block will ensure the 2022 Tundra Double Cab performs better in every aspect be it acceleration, towing capability, off-road capability, and fuel economy. The Sierra and the Silverado are set to drop the 4.3L V6 for 2.7L Turbo Inline 4 for the 2022 model year. This is likely to improve performance figures on the charts. The Ford F-150 comes with a slew of 7 different powertrain options and the base 3.3L V6 still doesn't feel underpowered. Thanks to its new V6, the Tundra might shoot to the top of the class in terms of power.

2022 Toyota Tundra Double Cab Fuel Economy

9.0/10

With the addition of the brand new 3.5 L twin-turbocharged V6, the 2022 Toyota Tundra Double Cab is all set to have a better fuel economy. The increase in fuel economy certainly will be a noticeable one as the Tundra ditches the naturally aspirated V8 engine.

The expected combined fuel economy of the 2022 Toyota Tundra is said to be around the 21 mpg mark. With a tank size of 26.4 gallons, it might offer a maximum fuel range of 633.6 miles on the highway. It is an appreciable feat, considering the previous generation Tundra had a range of around 450 miles on the highway.

All trucks in the competition offer similar fuel economy. However, the difference lies in their range. Thanks to its large 26.4-gallon fuel tank, Tundra offers the maximum driving range. The Silverado 1500 and the Sierra 1500 post similar fuel economy and range as they come equipped with the same engine and fuel tank.

2022 Toyota Tundra Double Cab Interior

9.0/10

The 2022 Toyota Tundra Double Cab is all set to have a major rework done to its interior as it prepares to get launched in mid-2021. The changes will include an all-new dashboard, upgraded seats, and an upgraded stereo and infotainment system. The interior of the Tundra has always been the same utilitarian design language and is expected to follow in the 2022 model year. The build quality and materials inside the Tundra have always been designed and selected keeping the vehicle’s purpose in mind and the same attributes are expected in the 2022 model as well.

The infotainment system might get a complete overhaul with brand new sound and infotainment systems derived from the previous year’s Toyota and Lexus SUVs. The dashboard is expected to have a 12” touchscreen infotainment display along with an updated stereo system. All variants will have features like dual-zone climate control and connectivity features like Bluetooth audio, Android Auto, and Apple CarPlay as standard. The higher trim levels might also be equipped with features like a premium audio system, an all-glass panoramic roof, Amazon Alexa support, and so on.

Since the exterior and interior are getting a major revamp, we don’t have exact figures in terms of cabin space and cargo capacity of the Tundra yet but being a Double Cab variant, it can seat up to 6 people. Ford F-150 compromises rear-seat legroom for more cargo capacity. GMC and Chevrolet offer similar interior and cargo space.

2022 Toyota Tundra Double Cab Exterior

7.0/10

The 2022 Toyota Tundra Double Cab will have a complete exterior overhaul as it marks the start of the new generation. The 2022 Tundra will be based on a new platform which will be shared with the 2022 Toyota Sequoia and Tacoma as well. The body will undergo major design upgrades and will have some attractive features and gimmicks.

There won’t be much difference in the wheelbase, length, and other dimensions. The Tundra will get a brand new grille that looks muscular and draws attention. The headlamps as well as the tail lamps will get a complete overhaul and will be fully LED with sharp and handsome-looking LED daytime running lights in the front.

Tundra is expected to be on the heavier side compared to its competitors. GMC and Chevrolet trucks offer better exterior dimensions and a larger wheelbase which translates to better cabin space. They also weigh less than the Ford and Toyota as they come equipped with an inline -4 as opposed to V6 in the Tundra and F-150.

The Tundra offers the highest ground clearance at 10.4 inches making it much more suitable for offroading. The 2022 Tundra is also expected to get a side-facing exhaust which will make it convenient to tow and load the truck bed. Some of the exterior features expected in the 2022 Tundra Double Cab are listed below :

  • Projector-beam headlights with DRLs.
  • Dark grey grille with black surrounds.
  • Color-keyed power outside mirrors, door handles, and rear bumper.
  • 16-inch styled steel wheels.
  • Skid plates.
  • Color-keyed tailgate spoiler.

2022 Toyota Tundra Double Cab Safety

9.0/10

The 2022 Tundra hasn’t received any safety ratings from agencies like the NHTSA and the IIHS yet as the vehicle is in its final test phase. The 2021 Toyota Tundra had an overall safety rating of 4 out of 5 stars as per the NHTSA reports and had an ‘Acceptable’ rating from the IIHS.

But we definitely can’t compare the 2022 model year Tundra with the previous-gen as it has had an overhaul in every aspect including the platform, body, and structural integrity. The 2022 Toyota Tundra is expected to offer more standard safety features compared to the previous model year. Some of the safety features onboard might include :

  • Dynamic Radar Cruise Control.
  • Rear Door Child Safety Locks.
  • Engine Immobilizer.
  • 8 Airbags.
  • Stability Control.
  • Passenger Airbag Occupant Sensing Deactivation.
  • Remote Anti-Theft Alarm System.
  • Auto Delay Off and Dusk Sensing Headlamps.
  • Tire Pressure Monitoring.
  • Traction Control.
  • Pre-Collision Safety System.
  • Front Fog/Driving Lights.
  • Post-Collision Safety System.
  • Emergency Braking Assist.

2022 Toyota Tundra Double Cab Competition

6.0/10

2022 Toyota Tundra Double Cab vs. 2022 Ford F-150 Supercab

The 2022 Toyota Tundra Double Cab should really have an advantage over the 2022 Ford F-150 as it is expected to be cheaper, have a more powerful base engine, and a great fuel economy. The Tundra will prove to be a strong contender to the F-150 for sure.

2022 Toyota Tundra Double Cab vs. 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 Double Cab

The 2022 Toyota Tundra Double Cab is expected to have a very good advantage over the GMC Sierra 1500 Double Cab as well, as it would cost less and have better fuel economy and certainly more power.

2022 Toyota Tundra Double Cab vs. 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Double Cab

Just like the rest of the rivalry, the 2022 Tundra is all set to be better than the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 as well when it comes to pricing, power, performance, and fuel economy. The Tundra will have slightly more advantages than the Silverado when it comes to utility and practicality as well.

2022 Toyota Tundra Double Cab Final Verdict

The 2022 Toyota Tundra Double Cab is all set to launch in the market in mid-2021 and will certainly be a huge hit as it promises a handsome price tag, better engine performance and handling, better infotainment system, sharp and attractive looks, and great value for money. The Tundra is certainly the pickup truck to look out for as it prepares to become the best truck in a segment that is otherwise dominated by its American counterparts.
