Overview

The roads nowadays are filled with off-road oversized cars. They feel a bit unnecessary for people that go about their errands in the city. For the city then, there is a category of automobiles that suit the mid-sized family, and the regular commuter best, the hatchback. Toyota since 2008 have been improving the much loved Yaris. In 2017 however, it's taken a different form from the first generation Yaris altogether. The 2017 Yaris hatchback has been reshaped and upgraded safety features. Who doesn't like a small, safe and exciting car. It's good in the cities and it's good on the highway too. The car looks as if it has been beefed up, but doesn't take much space than its predecessor. It looks like a car would be as serious as you'd want it to be, and as ridiculous as you'd want it. It is a serious blend of funny and serious.

The 2017 Yaris hatchback has been reshaped and offers upgraded safety features. Who doesn' t like a small, safe and exciting car? It' s good in the cities and it's good on the highway too. It is a serious blend of funny and serious.

Features

7.3/10

The SE version is the top trim for this car and although it gives you some good features that the modern cars must have, they still come with a price of 2000$ higher than the LE trim. The SE gives you better safety in terms of seats, brakes and better running headlights. The SE has some features that add to the comfort and convenience for the daily driver.

The Yaris comes in 5 trims. A 3-door and a 5-door version is available for both the L and LE variants. The Yaris being a hatchback has been reasonably priced at just over $15,000 for the base model (L). Both Manual Transmission and Automatic transmission are available for all variants of the Yaris, which is a good thing as some customers prefer one to the other.

Engine

5.6/10

"Although the Toyota Yaris may not deliver class-leading driving engagement, it doesn't disappoint, either, and is indeed competent. Note that this rating applies to the five-speed manual. The four-speed automatic hampers acceleration and drivability, and we don't recommend it."-Edmunds

The engine being a 1.5L 4 Cylinder engine means the car is definitely not quick. In the city it might mean that you are adequately equipped with an engine that will take you comfortably through all of your commutes. But once you hit the highway, you' ll soon find out that the engine is not in its comfort zone any longer.

The Yaris' s engine produces 106 HP and a mere 103 lb/ft of torque which is the least of its rivals. Any long trips if planned on this car might be calling for trouble. The Yaris still carries the same old 4-speed transmission which most brands and cars have gotten rid of. This means the engine has to be cooled all the time and there might not be room to gain a lot of speed when needed. Some of its rivals such as the Honda Fit and the Ford Fiesta come with a slightly larger engine and a 6-speed and a 5-speed transmission respectively. Both cars rivals have more power and more torque which will be convenient when travelling in or out of the city.

Acceleration

The Toyota Yaris takes the longest, a whopping 10 seconds to reach 0-60MPH. This might be due to the smaller engine and the outdated 4-speed transmission that produces less power than all of the competition.

The Ford Fiesta takes 9.7 seconds and the winner at just 8.2 seconds is the Honda Fit. The Honda wins presumably because the engine produces greater torque and power.

Handling and Ride

The 2017 Yaris does not have the driving experience that more costlier cars might have. With the small engine and the 4-speed gearbox it obstructs the acceleration and will sometimes be a pain in the neck. In the 5-speed transmission however, things look a bit better.

The Technology known as Tilt steering was invented so that a driver could minimally steer and get greater response from the wheels, but in this it seems like it hampers the driving experience. Otherwise the driving experience is pretty secure.

Braking

While all 4 wheels have the ABS technology as standard, the entry-level model brakes lack the precision of the SE model. We recommend that you go for the SE model if you are a potential buyer as it will give little extra crisp brakes and other satisfying extra options. Stopping distance from 60-0 MPH is 127 feet which is just about acceptable for its lightweight body. In Fact, it is the lightest car amongst its rivals. The long stopping distance can be ascribed to its poor braking performance when compared to some of its rivals.

The Yaris come with a hybrid version that runs on electrical and fuel powers. While that is the most selling variant of the Yaris, we compare the petrol versions of the car and its rivals. The Yaris can do an affordable 30 MPG in the city and 35 MPG on the highway.

The number is only beaten by the Nissan Versa Note SV as it can do 31 MPG in the city and 39 MPG on the highway. Combined the Yaris will give 32 MPG which is a lower than its rivals, but by a minute measure.

Interior

5.5/10

"Overall, the Yaris has a pleasant cabin that's mostly fitted with soft-touch materials. It's not as attractive or upscale as some rivals, however. The Yaris' interior build quality is mediocre."-Cars.USnews

Seating and Comfort

The Toyota Yaris can seat 5 people and you won' t break a sweat while doing that. The seats are upscale and seem a little too much for the price of the Yaris. You really do feel comfortable in the front and in the back which might make one wonder how the car is so reasonably priced.

The front and back seats have a lot of seating space adequate for children and adults alike. However, on longer trips, the seats do get to you and might feel a bit uncomfortable. It is otherwise a suitable car for the average city driver.

Entertainment

It comes with a 6.1-inch screen is not bad and is easy to use even when driving. It is preferred by some due to its user-friendly interface. Some of its features include:

  • AM/FM
  • CD player
  • MP3 player
  • USB Input
  • Bluetooth Capability

The infotainment system also can turn into a rearview camera and assist you in reversing as well as parking. This is a new feature which comes as standard.

Cargo

This is a measure where the Yaris is on the losing side. See, the Yaris can accommodate up to 15 cubic feet of cargo space. It is not the biggest boot but it is practical for everyday uses. If you are looking for a vehicle that delivers you the daily needs of a city driver, the option of a Toyota Yaris must be entertained.

"Both 2017 Toyota Yaris variants have identical exterior measurements, though versions with only one door on each side have a more coupe-like profile. If you plan to regularly bring rear-seat passengers along for the ride, we'd recommend paying the nominal extra for a 5-door version so you do not have to constantly slide the front seats forward to accommodate friends, family or strangers if you are using the car for a ride-sharing service. Subjectively, the Yaris is cute in a squat, kid-brother sort of way. Top-line SE models add pizazz with black accents and headlight trim, and rear spoiler and diffuser."-KelleyBlueBook

Dimensions and weight

The car' s exterior is sporty, with a redesigned front fascia and the X-shaped grill. It' s not the best looking car but it' s not an ugly shape by any measure. The Yaris does have less length which means it gives a bit less cargo room than its competition. While Ground Clearance is average, it is nowhere near the tall Ford Fiesta which is easier to maneuver around speed humps. It carries a mere 2300 or odd kilograms which is lesser than its rivals, but still doesn' t accelerate, decelerate or perform as much as some others.

Competition

Ford Fiesta vs Toyota Yaris

The Ford fiesta is what comes to mind when one thinks about a hatchback. But that was before other automakers tried their hand at the job. The Ford is undoubtedly a very good car and one of FOrd' s best selling too. It comes at around the same price and is actually better at a few points. The power produced by its engine, the torque and the overall seating and ride is better compared to the Toyota Yaris. It even Handles just as well, if not better.

Honda Fit vs Toyota Yaris

The Honda Fit wins by the marks of the engine output. It beats all others in the field of power and speed. And because it' s Honda, we can presume it has good build quality as well. It is as sporty-looking as the Ford or even the Yaris. However, the Spaceship looking front end looks like it will take off as soon as you put your foot on the pedal. It is a futuristic looking car and the consideration of aerodynamic laws in the body panel is obvious. So, it looks great, it goes fast, it has more seating space, more space for cargo, why wouldn' t you want to buy one?

Nissan Versa Note SV vs Toyota Yaris

It is said that the Nissan Versa has more legroom than the Mercedes Benz E-class Sedan. While that is a convenience, and it comes at almost the same price as its rivals, it lacks the good-looking exterior that some of them carry. It also does not come with a manual transmission option and you are stuck with a CVT which does, however, increase the fuel economy.

Final Verdict

The Nissan is not exactly a looker, The HOnda Fit is the fastest but lacks some interior features, the Toyota Yaris is well, slow and will be be comfortable as long as you don' t wander off too far off from home, and the Ford Fiesta is good looking, fast, comfortable and the same price. At this point it is about personal preference. We recommend you choose a vehicle that will be a little more versatile and suits your needs better than looking at the numbers or the price.
