Engine

6.4/10

The 2018 Toyota Yaris iA isn’t the most powerful car on the market, but its sharp handling and accurate steering make it a pleasure to drive. It also has some of the best fuel economy estimates in the class - Cars.usnews.com

Engine and Transmission

The 2018 Toyota Yaris iA has a 1.5L 4-Cylinder engine under its hood. It has got two transmissions options: a 6-speed Manual and a 6-speed Automatic. The engine is tuned to produce 106 hp at 6000 rpm and 103 lb-ft of torque at 4000 rpm.

The engine feels smooth and well refined and has got enough for the daily commute. The six-speed transmission does a good job and the manual makes you feel more connected. Still, more buyers will prefer the automatic variant as it also gets a sport mode for better acceleration.

Acceleration

With the 1.5 L engine, the Yaris iA takes 8.7 sec to go from 0 to 60 mph. Kia Rio also takes the same time to do so but it performs slightly better in terms of a quarter mile. The manual transmission feels underpowered if you wish to accelerate quickly. However, the sport mode in the Automatic transmission make things better and provide ample gusto for optimal acceleration. The Nissan Versa sedan meanwhile is the slowest in the segment.

Ride and Handling

The Sport-tuned Electric power steering is responsive and it easy to maneuver the car. It has got the near-perfect dynamics of a good subcompact sedan with lighter handling. The Independent MacPherson strut front suspension and the torsion beam rear suspension help the Yaris iA soak larger bumps easily.

Braking

The 10.2-inch Power-assisted ventilated front disc brakes and the 7.9 inch rear drum brakes help the Yaris iA take 127 feet to come to a standstill position from a speed of 60 mph. The Kia Rio also takes the same 127 feet in order to do so, but an interesting observation is that the Rio is heavier than the Yaris iA by over 250 lbs. While the Ford Fiesta offers the best braking in the segment with 118 ft, the Nissan Versa sedan offers the worst braking with 129 ft of stopping distance.

The Kia Rio offers the second-best fuel economy in the segment with 29/37/32 mpg. While the Ford Fiesta has a fuel efficiency of 27/35/30 mpg, the Nissan Versa sedan consumes almost the amount of fuel with a slight difference of one extra mile per gallon on the highway.

Interior

6.3/10

The hushed cabin of the 2018 Toyota Yaris iA is made up of quality, soft-touch materials that are often found in higher-priced models. The infotainment systems’ controls are easy to use and made with the driver in mind. Cargo space is average. Cars.usnews.com

Seating and Comfort

The seats are well positioned and it is pretty easy to get in and get out of the car. The dual-tone seats are well bolstered and the 6-way adjustable driver's seat and 4-way adjustable passenger's seat gives you the ample space in the front row.

The second-row seats come with 60/40 split fold-down which help increase the space as and when needed. But, it feels congested with low legroom especially for tall adults; having said that, there is a decent amount of overall headroom and space inside the car.

The cargo capacity offered in the Yaris iA is the third best in the segment with 13.4 cubic feet of space while the Nissan Versa sedan stands out to be the best with 14.9 cubic feet. The cargo space in the Kia Rio is slightly greater than the Yaris iA with 13.7 while the Ford Fiesta sedan offers the least cargo space in the class with 12.8 cubic feet.

Exterior

6.4/10

The iA’s cleanly styled exterior is highlighted by a bold front fascia treatment set off with Toyota’s now-signature piano-black accenting, prominent character lines, and standard 16-inch alloy wheels.

We also found night time visibility to be quite good for a car fitted with traditional multi-reflector headlights in lieu of more modern projector-beam units. Kelley Blue Book

Dimension and Weight

Toyota's 4-door subcompact sedan is the lightest car in the segment with 2385 lbs and it is the one with the least ground clearance with 5.5 inches, sharing the spot with the Kia Rio. It is also the smallest car in the class in terms of length with 171.7 inches.

Exterior Features

The 2018 Toyota Yaris iA looks the same as the Mazda 2 with a Toyota badge. The gaping grill on the front, fish-eye inspired headlights, clean character lines on the sides, rounded rear body; all this reminds us of the Scion iA. However, Toyota offers some decent exterior features which include:

  • Power outside mirrors with LED turn signal indicators
  • Chrome-tipped exhaust
  • Daytime Running Lights (DRL)
  • Variable intermittent front windshield wipers
  • Rear window defogger
  • Halogen headlights
