2019 Volkswagen Beetle Complete In-depth Review & Buying Guide

Anuron Deka's image

Alas, Volkswagen has decided to pull the plug on the iconic Beetle. In 2019, VW Beetle has entered its final year of production. The Beetle is one of those cars that has ordained a legendary status. However, over the last two generations, the iconic Beetle has been stripped off its identity. The retro charm had worked its magic for the older generations but for the current generation, that formula was starting to lose steam.

Overall Rating

The 2019 Volkswagen Beetle is powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter engine that has been tuned to balance performance and efficiency. The engine has enough power to swiftly propel the almost 3200 lbs car. Beetle holds its ground against the competitors from Mini, Buick, and Fiat.

2019 Volkswagen Beetle Engine and Performance

6.0/10

Acceleration should be strong whether you're pulling away from a stoplight or overtaking on the freeway. But deceleration takes more effort than anticipated because the brakes aren't quick to respond. Steering is responsive and quick on the highway, and it's light when maneuvering at slow speeds.-Edmunds

Engine and Transmission

The folks at VW designed the turbo to deliver the most power and fun while being as efficient as possible. The 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine is good for 174 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque. It is paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission. The modern Beetle loses a lot of its charm points. The original VW Beetle was light on its toes. It was offered with a manual transmission and robust air-cooled rear-engine layout.

In terms of raw horsepower, the Beetle doesn't top the charts. The competitors extract more horsepower from a similar 2.0-liter engine displacement. But this low state of tune helps the Beetle to score better EPA fuel economy rating.

Acceleration

The VW Beetle reaches the naught to sixty markers in 7.2 seconds. The Beetle wouldn't satisfy the enthusiast but it will score high points when it comes to smooth ride quality and stability. The 2.0-liter engine offers a satisfactory performance. The Beetle will handle daily-driving situations gracefully.

Amongst the competition, the Mazda Miata is the quickest to reach the 0-60 MPH marker. The Mazda is able to achieve this feat due to its featherweight construction. The Beetle has a below-average 0-60 MPH time for this segment.

Ride and Handling

Beetle feels more home at the highway than its counterparts. The VW Beetle offers a more compliant ride. You would be comfortable even after long journeys. The Beetle's driving dynamics fall into the bracket of commuter cars. Beetle wouldn't be able to truly engage you as a Mazda Miata or Mini Cooper.

Braking

The 2019 Beetle convertible offers respectable stopping power. The VW Beetle weighs in at 3219 lbs, which puts it on the heavier side of the spectrum but the brake pedal provides you a smooth and progressive depression which inspires confidence while braking. The Beetle is also offered with safety aids like Automatic Post-Collision Braking System and Blind Spot Monitoring.

2019 Volkswagen Beetle Fuel Economy

5.0/10

The 2019 Volkswagen Beetle is able to attain an estimated fuel economy of 26 mpg in the city and 33 mpg on the highway. With the help of its 14.5-gallon fuel tank, the Beetle can cover up to 478 highway miles.

With a combined economy of 29 mpg, both Beetle and Mazda are at the top in the efficiency barrel but Buick remains at the bottom with 24 mpg. The rest of the pack puts up a decent number too.

2019 Volkswagen Beetle Interior

Inside, the relatively spartan cabin remains untouched, and we still like the straightforward style with a retro approach. Unfortunately, the interior is let down by its last-generation materials, so some harder plastics remain than on more recently redesigned VWs.- TheCarConnection

Seating and Comfort

The 2019 Beetle convertible can perhaps be called one of the most comfortable and refined small convertibles. The premium designed seat quality hugs you without being oppressive and the suspension dispatches road imperfections without transmitting any harshness to the cabin.

Compared to its peers Beetle is bigger and generally easier to drive but the car's rear visibility is hampered by a small window surrounded by the convertible top.

The seat bottom of Beetle is not long enough to provide taller drivers with outstanding thigh support. Otherwise, the seats feel supportive and comfortable, added with the cloth upholstery which offers good cushioning. In this class adjustable lumbar support isn't standard, so we're glad that the Beetle offers it.

The Mazda Miata and Fiat 124 have seating for only two people. The Buick Cascada offers seating for four people and has more generous space for the rear passengers. If you want more utility, then you have to check out cars from a higher segment.

Infotainment

All the trims are offered with a touchscreen for infotainment. Bluetooth connectivity is a standard feature. This screen also plays the feed from the rearview camera. The top trims (SE & SEL Final Edition) feature a 6.3-inch touchscreen for infotainment with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capability. Some features of the infotainment system are:

  • 8 Total Speakers
  • Auxiliary Audio Input And USB With External Media Control
  • USB Connection
  • Memory Card Slot
  • AM/FM Stereo

Cargo Capacity

The scaled-down 7.1-cubic-foot trunk has a very small, upright opening suitable for a couple of bags but nothing more than that. Unfortunately, the top-hinged trunk hatch makes loading and unloading a bit awkward. Although a very narrow pass-through behind the rear seats can help with longer items.

The front door nets can be called very poor substitutes for actual cubbies, and the armrest bin doesn't hold much. Although you can find a good amount of space under the center stack. Also, there isn't a lot of space for your personal items in the cabin. But it's the case with almost every comparably sized or prized drop-top as they suffer from compromised trunk space.

2019 Volkswagen Beetle Exterior

The VW Beetle pays homage to the VW Beetle. In other words, the current model was inspired by the old classic. As such, its profile is one of the most recognizable car shapes ever. The curved hood, curved fenders, curved roof, round headlights and short overhangs at each end evoke Volkswagen's cool pedigree.- KelleyBlueBook

Design and Dimensions

The VW Beetle draws heavily from its heritage. The unmistakable design had its share of changes throughout the generations. 2019 model is part of the third generation. The retro-styling runs strong. It is hard to miss the Beetle rolling down the street. Dimensionally, the VW Beetle offers larger body dimensions than most of the competitors. With a 100-inch wheelbase, the Beetle makes enough room for four passengers.

2019 Volkswagen Beetle Competition

Volkswagen Beetle vs Mini Cooper

The Mini Cooper is famous for its go-kart-like handling. The base trim is powered by a 1.5-liter three-cylinder engine that puts out 134 horsepower and 162 pound-feet of torque. Going by the numbers the base trim is a little too underpowered. For this review, we have compared the VW Beetle with Mini Cooper's mid-spec Cooper S trim.

In its base trim, Mini Cooper is more frugal than the competition. The base Cooper, with a 3-cylinder engine, is rated at an impressive 32 mpg (combined). Compared to the VW Beetle, the mid-spec Cooper S trim scores 3 mpg less in the EPA ratings.

Volkswagen Beetle vs FIAT 124

Fiat 124 uses a smaller capacity 1.4-liter engine. In terms of performance, both these cars are evenly matched but Fiat 124 weighs considerably lesser than the VW Beetle. If you are looking for something fun to drive, then Fiat 124 is better suited for your needs.

Fiat 124 loses out on utility and cargo space. The Beetle convertible can seat four people while the Fiat 124 is a two-seater. At 4.9 cu-ft the Fiat 124 is better suited to carry a couple of duffle bags.

Volkswagen Beetle vs Mazda Miata MX-5 Miata

The MX-5 enjoys a special place in this segment. The Miata turns out to be fun to drive a car for different kinds of drivers - beginners and experienced alike. When pitted against the VW Beetle the MX-5 wins the raw horsepower battle but the VW Beetle has a better power delivery. The turbo motor with its high torque is helpful in stop and go city traffic. Miata tips the scales at a mere 2453 lbs. The MX-5's naturally aspirated motor likes to be revved hard and an RWD setup makes it a hoot to drive. When compared to the VW Beetle the MX-5 loses out on practicality.

2019 Volkswagen Beetle Final Verdict

We are upset that there are no plans to bring back the Beetle. The Beetle offers more practicality in a segment where buyers have different priorities. It is nice to have that extra two seats at the back but it is even nicer to pin throttle at the apex of to corner to make a ravishing exit. Sadly, the VW Beetle is more suited to A to B commuting duties. It lacks the character that its adversaries are known for. If it was our money we would definitely go to a Mini dealership.
