Detailed Review

The original Beetle has been dubbed as the people’s car (hence the Volkswagen in German) because it was affordable to almost anyone who could think of buying a car back then. The original beetle ran into production till 2003. Later it has been replaced by the ‘New Beetle’ which is essentially mostly the visual upgrade over the original one. And this little car is back for the year 2017 to steal your heart with its cuteness. But should you fall into this trickery?

The Volkswagen Beetle aka the VW Bug is small and cute yet packs some serious power inside that heart-melting design of the car. Powered by the 2.0L TSI engine as used in few other Volkswagen cars, it has the capability of giving a tough competition to others in its category. But there is something which you have in the Bug but not in others.

What's New?

The VW Beetle packs the same old eye-pleasing design with some minor upgrades. This year the Manual transmission option is not available with this car. Volkswagen’s post-collision braking system is not standard. The front bumper has a new design for 2017. And this year, a limited-production Pink Beetle aka #PinkBeetle trim level is offered.

The VW Bug is starting at a price of around 25 grand and goes up to around 31 grand for its various trims. And when you put the broacher of the Bug with another car in the segment, side-by-side. You can clearly see that you are getting much more than other cars for a lesser price. Sounds surely like a people’s car, I mean a ‘Volkswagen’. So now let’s get to the question in your mind, “Should I buy it?” I am sure this review will help you with the answer to that question. Adding to the basic stuff, a new limited-production of the beetle dubbed #PinkBeetle is also available. Only 2,000 units of the #PinkBeetle are to be manufactured.

2017 Volkswagen Beetle Features

7.9/10

The Bug is available in 6 trims ranging from $24,725 to $30,275. As you go up a trim, more features are being added to this car making it ever a better deal to buy this car. In the base model, the only addition to the regular beetle is its power convertible top. But as you go up a trim, the features like Touchscreen sound system, heated seats, keyless entry, automatic climate control and many more are added in this car. And the top trim doesn’t feel left behind the competitors, at all.

2017 Volkswagen Beetle Engine

6.9/10

“The 2018 Volkswagen Beetle may not be the most engaging-to-drive subcompact car on the market, but it delivers solid performance. It has a powerful new engine this year, and the car's cushioned and composed handling serve it well on the daily commute. However, the Beetle can feel unsettled when taking turns quickly, and it gets worse gas mileage than most competitors.”-  Cars.usnews

Engine and Transmission

VW Bug is the cheapest in the competition along with the Mazda MX-5. But it produces a respectable performance when compared to its competition. Being just $80 costlier than the Mazda, it produces 15 extra horses than the Mazda. While it lacks behind the Audi A3 by 16 horsepower, it is also cheaper than the A3 by more than $12,000.

And that should clearly justify the slightly lower engine performance of the Beetle. Not to mention, it has the turbocharged engine, to give you an edge if you ever plan to race along with the Audi A3. The transmission is the 6-Speed automatic, just going to help you with the quicker gear shift.

VW Bug just lacks behind the Mazda even though the Mazda MX-5 has a less powerful engine. That is because of the Sport pack, the MX5 weighs almost 900 lbs. less than the Beetle which helps it to achieve the 0-60 mph mark in under 6 seconds. But Beetle isn’t lacking much behind. It reaches the 60 mph mark in 6.4 seconds beating the Buick and the Audi with a great margin. Although the Volkswagen’s engines don’t have a good image when you talk about the carbon emission. VW engines always have been unpleasant to nature, even more than other brands.

Ride and Handling

The VW Bug promise a sense of all-around refinement along with a compliant ride. The suspension of this car absorbs all the bumps efficiently giving you a soft comfort driving experience. As Volkswagen says, fun to drive, fun to be in. The car cuts the corners efficiently without giving you a sense of being about to roll side-ward any minute now.

The 1.8L turbocharged engine of this car does throw you back in your seat when you hit on the gas paddle. It churns out great power out of its turbocharged engine. No wonder it does 0-60 mph in 6.4 seconds.

“The Beetle feels airy and bright thanks to the large windows, and the roof is high enough for a pair of tall adults in the front. Visibility out the back is hampered by a small window surrounded by the convertible top.”- Edmunds

Seating and Comfort

Despite the small side of the Bug, seating is not a problem in this car for any of the 5 people sitting in this car. There are enough leg room and the head space for both sitting in front and on the back. Trips are going to fun and comfortable in this car. In case some long person feels like he has a problem keeping his head inside, you can always remove the roof for him to stick his head outside. See, there is literally no issue with the sitting in this car.

Dimensions and Weight

Volkswagen Beetle is a rather small car and for the year 2017, it is even smaller. This car is for 5 people at max and 168.7 in. x 71.2 in. is the smallest the Volkswagen could get with a height of 58.7 inch, which is a tad taller than its competition.

It does weights lesser than the Casada and the A3 Cabriolet. But it is heavier than the MX-5 by 900 pounds. But the MX-5 is with a sports pack so let us not talk about this. I am sure the Beetle with some sports parts would weight lighter and might give a tough competition to the Mazda.

2017 Volkswagen Beetle Competition

Volkswagen Beetle Convertible vs Mazda MX-5 Miata Sport

The MX-5 by Mazda is a sports car for the really low budget. It is cheap, lighter, have 2 seats and does a quicker 0-60 mph. On the other hand, the Beetle is not a sport car. But it will still help you reach 60 mph mark in 6.4 seconds, have a turbocharged engine to produce 170 bhp and 210 bhp for its R-line. Both of which variants are powerful than the MX-5. So you can say that the beetle will throw all of 5 people into their seats on doing paddle to the metal.

Volkswagen Beetle Convertible vs Buick Cascada

The Buick Cascada is costlier than the Beetle, with 30 more horsepower but takes almost 2 more seconds to reach the 60 miles mark. Have a smaller engine than the Beetle. But it does have better seating space and cargo space than the Beetle but it is not like you would be feeling any uncomfortable in the Beetle. The Buick just have that extra space. And did I mention the Beetle is going to grab a tons of more attention than the Buick. So what is it going to be? Buick or Beetle? I know you want that extra attention.

Volkswagen Beetle Convertible vs Audi A3 Cabriolet (Premium)

Audi’s are always about the style statement. You will buy an Audi because it is more powerful and is more luxurious and you have that extra 12 grand. What if you don’t have the extra $12,000? Or you have the extra money but the Audi can lose to the Beetle on straight. You really want a cute car to leave your mean looking Audi to dust? I guess no. So the Volkswagen Beetle would be a perfect car for you. Plus you’ll be saving enough money to customize it your way. And Beetle does not lack behind the A3 in any aspect. It is luxurious, fast and cute. Like a perfect package. But if you really are into the Sedan kinds, I can’t argue with you.

2017 Volkswagen Beetle Final Verdict

I think it is a good car considering  what you are paying for. It gives you a comfortable riding experience. And when you really want to hit the gas paddle hard, Beetle does a good job sticking on the roads even on the hard corners. And this cute car is mostly the attention grabber. You can enjoy those head turning to get a glimpse of your car when you roll down the road in your neighborhood. The most import stuff is it gives a tough competition to other cars in this price segment and even beat them.
