Abhinandan Banerjee's image

Abhinandan Banerjee Senior Correspondent Updated on: November 14, 2019

The car which formed the base of the legendary Porsche 911 and was the brainchild of Ferdinand Porsche and Adolf Hitler, the KdF-Wagen or the People's Car-The Volkswagen Beetle, is finally getting axed in 2019. The car to be in production for the longest period of time has seen the best and worst days of mankind. Sadly enough, this "Legend" is being sent off into the history with a set of new Final Edition trims added to the standard trim-list for 2019.

Overall Rating

Carrying the weight of so much history and heritage, do not take the Beetle to be any less advanced in terms of the build quality or interior tech. Yes, you get everything that you'd expect from a modern-day hatchback, and then more.  However, one thing it carries forward from its forefathers - the exterior design. Its bug-like silhouette is so unique, that this car further went on to be titled as the "Iconic Bug". Priced at $20,895, the Beetle doesn't really compete with anyone here, since it's more of an emotional buy than a practical one. However, the rivals of the 2019 VW Beetle include Fiat 500 Abarth, Mini Cooper Hardtop and the Honda Civic Coupe.

The Final Edition SEL trim is just $5,000 expensive than the base trim and for that, you are getting a lot of equipment in the form of a Touchscreen Navigation system, Leather upholstery and more. Hence, this is the trim worth spending the extra pennies on.

Engine and Transmission

The people at VW planned the turbo to convey the most power and fun while being as productive as would be prudent. The 2.0-liter turbocharged four Cylinder motor is useful for 174hp and 184 pound-feet of torque. It is matched to a superb 6-speed automatic transmission. The Engine does provide enough grunt to pass that odd car on the motorway or on the cities.

In terms of the rivals as well, the VW holds up its ground well, as its the most powerful of the bunch.

In terms of raw horsepower, the Beetle tops the charts and is the closest matched by the Fiat 500 Abarth. The Honda Civic comes in as a close 3rd to the Fiat 500 while the Mini loses out on this front.

Acceleration

With a 7.2 second time to reach 60MPH, the VW Beetle is no slouch. It manages to match some of the fastest hatchbacks in the market and picks up pace easily. This helps it in reaching speed limit speed, faster than expected and makes it a breeze to drive on the motorway and on city streets

The lightweight nature and the punchy motor of the Abarth yield it advantages in the 0-60 run as its the fastest to that mark. The Civic and the Beetle are locked at a dead heat for the 2nd spot and the Mini is the last of this list as well.

Ride and Handling

The 2019 Volkswagen Beetle feels more home at the highway than its counterparts. It manages to offer a comfortable ride in most instances and passengers won't be worn out, even after long stints with the beetle. The Beetle's driving dynamics fall into the bracket of commuter cars and are no different than the others in its class. The Beetle though feels much more planted at city speeds and while taking corners than its rivals.

Braking

With a 115ft stopping distance from 60MPH, the VW Beetle fares very well when compared to its similarly priced rivals. With a Curb weight of over 3,000lbs, you would expect the brakes to not be at par but the brake pedal provides you a smooth and progressive depression which inspires confidence while braking. The Beetle is also offered with safety aids like Automatic Post-Collision Braking System and Blind Spot Monitoring.

2019 Volkswagen Beetle Hatchback Fuel Economy

5.0/10

With all the performance on hand, the 2019 Volkswagen Beetle suffers in the Fuel Economy department. With just 29MPG overall MPG figure, the VW delivers the least in terms of numbers. But, the Beetle makes up for this figure with its impressive range of 377 miles on the city and 479 on the highway, courtesy of its massive 14.5 gallon fuel tank.

Seating and Comfort

The 2019 Volkswagen Beetle Coupe can perhaps be called one of the most comfortable and refined small coupes on the market right now. The premium designed seat quality hugs you without being oppressive and the suspension dispatches road imperfections without transmitting any harshness to the cabin.

2019 Volkswagen Beetle Seating
2019 Volkswagen Beetle Seating

Compared to its peers Beetle is bigger and generally easier to drive but the car's rear visibility is hampered by a small window surrounded by the convertible top.

The seat bottom of Beetle is not long enough to provide taller drivers with outstanding thigh support. Otherwise, the seats feel supportive and comfortable, added with the cloth upholstery which offers good cushioning. In this class adjustable lumbar support isn't standard, so we're glad that the Beetle offers it.

The Civic is the Car to go for if you are looking for the most spacious one in this segment despite its relatively smaller dimensions as compared to its rivals. The Mini offers decent space on the outside but is cumbersome while parking on tight spaces. The Abarth's compact proportions go against it in terms of interior space as well.

Infotainment

All the trims are offered with a touchscreen for infotainment. Bluetooth connectivity is a standard feature. This screen also plays the feed from the rearview camera. The top trim features a 6.3-inch touchscreen for infotainment with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capability. Some features of the infotainment system are:

Cargo Capacity

Unlike its convertible sibling, the Beetle Coupe offers around double the cargo capacity that the convertible has on offer. In terms of practicality as well, VW has bundled in a decent number of cubby holes in the cabin, to accommodate small 1L bottles and other handy stuff.

'The VW Beetle pays homage to the VW Beetle. In other words, the current model was inspired by the old classic. As such, its profile is one of the most recognizable car shapes ever. The curved hood, curved fenders, curved roof, round headlights and short overhangs at each end evoke Volkswagen's cool pedigree.'- KelleyBlueBook

Dimensions and Design

The VW Beetle draws heavily from its heritage. The unmistakable design had its share of changes throughout the generations. The 2019 model is part of the third generation. The retro-styling runs strong. It is hard to miss the Beetle rolling down the street. Dimensionally, the VW Beetle offers larger body dimensions than most of the competitors. With a 100-inch wheelbase, the Beetle makes enough room for four passengers.

2019 Volkswagen Beetle Hatchback Safety

Safety is gradually gaining prominence in the minds of Car buyers and VW is one of the first brands, to address this issue. The VW Beetle has excellent safety credentials. It is offered with a decent list of safety equipment like:

2019 Volkswagen Beetle Hatchback Competition

Volkswagen Beetle vs Mini Cooper

The Mini Cooper is famous for its go-kart like handling and its outright feel of British Luxury. The Mini offers good Gas mileage and scores high on the infotainment front as well. But, it is expensive when compared to the Beetle and can't exactly match the road manners and performance of the Beetle. The Beetle feels a bit more practical, courtesy of its massive cargo space and impeccbale highway manners as well.

Volkswagen Beetle vs Fiat 500 Abarth

The Fiat 500 Abarth is one of the sportiest 2 Door hatchbacks in the market right now. Despite being low on power when compared to the Beetle, it makes up with its crisp handling and superb manual transmission. If you are a power hungry person and wish to do more highway cruising, with no compromise on the build of the Car, then the Beetle will suit the best for you. For the joy of driving however, we would prefer the Abarth in this case.

Volkswagen Beetle vs Honda Civic

The Honda Civic has been the most popular choice of the people in the coupe segment and VW hasn't been able to replicate the sales of the same, despite all of its efforts. The Civic is high on practicality, features and will stand the test of time. The Beetle on the other hand offers a legendary design that will be remembered for ages to come. It also is plenty powerful on the road and has the higher range of the 2 as well.

2019 Volkswagen Beetle Hatchback Final Verdict

With the Beetle, finally facing the Axe in 2019 and VW not planning of bringing it back, there can't be a better time to buy this piece of Automitve Heritage and have it in your garage. The 2019 Volkswagen Beetle packs in the legendary Beetle design on the outside but embodies modern elements like projector headlights, LED Taillights and more. With a pleasing and modern interior layout coupled with Modern touches like a big touchscreen infotainment system and multiple connectivity options, the Beetle is a Car that you will enjoy your journeys on as well. The 2019 Volkswagen Beetle offers everything, one would expect from a coupe of this class and you can't go wrong with this piece of Automotive History.
