Overview

Volkswagen, world's biggest car manufacturer has produced many legendary cars, Volkswagen Beetle and Volkswagen Golf are two of them, these cars might not be the biggest, they are however not long at all but they have an appeal to them one might say they are the cars of the common men. But they say that they don't stand a chance in the competition will be a massive understatement.

The car we are going to talk about is not one of these but it is certainly inspired by them, it has a staple of being derived from them and in one way or other inspired by them, this is 2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack Wagon, as the name suggests it is a wagon that means it is long. The driver-train features a 1.8 Liter Turbocharged direct injected engine that delivers 184 pound-feet of torque with 170 horsepower of power throughout the trims, the base trim comes with a 6-speed manual transmission but the higher trims offer automatic transition with same number of speed levels. The base trim is available of $ 25,850 and the top one can go up to $ 32,890.

When compared to the other cars from different manufacturers this vehicle isn't the best but Volkswagen's build and quality inside out will make up for it

Volkswagen Golf Alltrack S does not have more engine displacement compared to the other cars in the class its a 1.8L TSI engine while the Ford Escape S offers 2.5 L i-VCT engine and Honda CR-V LX has a 2.4 L I-4 DOHC and Subaru Outback has 2.5i engine but the engine of Volkswagen produces more torque 184 pound-feet which is 4 pound-feet greater than the closest competitor Honda CR-V LX at 180 pound-feet but the transmission is manual while all the other cars in the range offer automatic transmission.

Acceleration

This being a wagon shouldn't be compared to a sports car but it can go up to 60 MPH from 0 in only 7.1 seconds that's a decent feat for an off-road kind of family vehicle, it can also cover a quarter mile in 15.5 seconds which is best in class compared to similar vehicles from other manufacturers, for environmentalists this car only produces an emission of 6.7 tons of CO2 per year on average.

Braking

Braking is essential if you are off-road or on-road this wagon can come to a halt from 60 MPH in 117 feet, it features 11.3-inch breaks on the front and 10.7 on the rear rims, with a curb weight of 3351 pounds this is standard break performance compared to the other cars in the same class.

The Volkswagen Golf AllTrack is the second heaviest in the class at 3351 pounds only behind Subaru Outback 2.5i which weighs 3580 pounds but in spite of the weight, car comes to 0 from 60 MPM only in 117 feet best in class matched by Ford Escape S.

The driving position is comfortable with decent room for feet handling is also quite nice compared to the weight the Subaru matches it in this department but the laggy transmission of the Subaru Outback 2.5i makes you wish you took a bus.

Fuel Economy

7.8/10

Fuel economy isnt best in class in any department delivering 26 miles per galleon on average and 22 MPG in city and 32 MPG on the highway, other manufacturers offer the similar mileages bettering Golf Alltrack by only a few miles in some cases with that we can deduce that this the standard when it comes to mileage in such vehicles.

As the name suggests the car isnt meant to be driven in the city but still only offering 22 MPG in city is not very good mileage only Ford escape is the worse than Volkswagen Golf Alltrack in this department at 21 MPG, but the car makes up for it on the highway covering 32 Miles in one Gallon matched by Honda CR-V LX and Subaru Outback 2.5i who show the same statistic, on average Volkswagen Golf Alltrack C gets you 26 miles per gallon of fuel.

Interior

7.8/10

"A large greenhouse with ample glass and a simple, sensible control layout make the Alltrack's cabin a pleasant, user-friendly environment."-Edmunds

Seating & Comfort

The interior is nice and roomy with plenty of space for the driver row as well as the second row, however, the leg space on the second row isn't much for the taller people but it isn't uncomfortable by any means, although there is nothing wrong with the interior its all like other VWs its driver-centric and all but it can feel a bit basic and however classy at times but it wouldn't outshine any modern interior styles.

The leg space for the driver and the front row is 41.2 inches in VW which is lesser than all the cars in the class but it certainly doesn't feel like it the driving position is comfortable and there is enough room for three adults in the second row with 35.6 inches of leg clearance.

Cargo Space

This car is an off-road station wagon has a lot of storage space, 30.4 cubic feet of it so if you want to carry a bike without the stand you can certainly do so in this car, you can in-fact more than double that space by folding the rear seats and you have the 66.5 cubic feet of space which is good enough for most of the big cargo.

Dimension & Weight

Exterior of the car is pretty synonymous to the Volkswagen Sportswagon which is kind of what we can expect since its derived from the same but the Alltrack has a rugged look to look it is slightly taller than the Sportswagon it has a nice feel to itself the overall appearance of the car very nice and doesn't feel out of place in a city also, the fancy headlights and panoramic roof gives it a feel of a modern style vehicle.

Competition

Volkswagen Golf AllTrack vs Ford Escape S

Ford Escape S however priced almost $ 2100 lesser than the base trim of the 2017 Volkswagen Golf All-track but it lacks it almost all departments despite way better engine displacement the car just cannot deliver which makes it not a good choice, you may think you are saving money but you have lost the deal.

Volkswagen Golf AllTrack vs Honda CRV

On paper Honda CRV is definitely a better choice its about $1900 bucks cheaper has a better Engine displacement with 2.5 L DOHC I-VTEC engine and betters the 2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack is almost every way, this is the very tough competition for the VW Golf Alltrack.

Volkswagen Golf AllTrack vs Subaru Outback

Subaru Outback is also a tough competition for the 2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack it offers 2.5 L 4 Cylinder Engine with a little less torque its priced almost at the same price and comes with 6 speed automatic transmission, however, the transmission does take some time to respond and you wouldn't want that, besides that all is really competitive compared to the 2017 Volkswagen Golf Alltrack.

Final Verdict

You would think in any case the a Volkswagen car will be the last in the competition and it is certainly true but this car doesnt really set itself apart from the competition in this particular case competitors offer cheaper and competitive cars in the same price range however you do get a certain peace of mind with a name like Volkswagen on the car and a grantee of the build and performance this car delivers in almost all conditions its meant for and stays steady in the test which makes a good product it treats the bumps nicely and all that you expect from such a car, but the beauty of the market is you have a lot of options to choose from and if you really adventurous and you want to try something new you can opt for other options also but one thing is for sure, that if you buy this car you certainly wouldnt be disappointed.
