The Volkswagen Golf has always appealed to a wide audience, right from the ones with small families to the enthusiastic crowd. Spanning 9 generations, Golf has carved a niche for itself, and to date, remains one of the best hatchbacks to buy in the market. The variants like GTI and R further make the hatchback a thing to be desired in the segment as they offer better performance and driving dynamics, resulting in an attractive hot-hatch to compete strongly with the rivals in the market.

Expert Review, Pricing Analysis and Buying Guide

The 2022 Volkswagen Golf GTI is all-new for this MY as it moves on to its eighth generation of being in the world. It has got a more powerful engine, which is surprisingly more fuel-efficient as well and the car is even lighter now. The design is also all-new, and the cabin now gets a lot of technologically advanced features. Overall for a minimal rise in price, the Golf GTI has gotten a lot better and substantially more engaging and fun to drive.

2022 Volkswagen Golf GTI Hatchback Features

The 2022 Volkswagen Golf GTI range starts from around $29,545 for the manual transmission and $30,540 for the DSG automatic transmission for the base S trim. Some noticeable features of the S trim are 18-inch alloy wheels, Full LED headlights and tail lights with LED fog lamps and DRLs, heated side mirrors with puddle lamps and memory features, automatic headlights, push-button start, rain-sensing wipers, perforated leather-wrapped and heated steering wheel with touch controls and paddle shifters for the DSG models.

One up the ladder is the SE trim, which comes for $35,390, and for the price you get a sunroof, adaptive front lighting system with cornering lamps, illuminated grille, 10-inch MIB3 Discover Pro infotainment with navigation, wireless App-Connect for compatible devices, Harman Kardon 480-watt premium audio system with nine speakers, and in-car wifi hotspot.

The most loaded trim is Autobahn for $38,990, and that adds 19-inch alloy wheels, summer performance tires, DCC adaptive damping, Vienna leather seating surfaces, ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, 12-way power driver seat with memory, leatherette door trim, three-zone Climatronic Touch with rear-seat controls, head-up display, Light Assist (High Beam Control for headlights), and Park Assist automatic parking assistant to the list.

Which trim should you buy?

The most value-for-money trim is often the mid-spec one, and here as well, we would prefer to go with the SE trim. For an extra $800, the standard six-speed manual can be swapped for a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic. Compared with the entry-level trim, the SE adds a 480-watt Karman/Kardon audio system, a cool illuminated grille, enhanced infotainment features, and a sunroof. It can also be fitted with leather upholstery, ventilated front seats, and memory settings for the driver's seat, but that means ditching the GTI's traditional cloth seats and their plaid design.

Release Date

The hot-hatch is expected to be in the showrooms around the end of 2021.

2022 Volkswagen Golf GTI Hatchback Engine and Performance

Extensive changes have been done to make the 2022 Volkswagen Golf GTI even more powerful than the outgoing model. The engine is the same but now it produces 241 hp and 273 pound-feet of torque, which makes the car sprint from 0-60 MPH in just over five seconds, which is a noticeable gain in performance over the previous generation model which took around 6 seconds. Though what is not changed is that the power is still sent to the front wheels via either a six-speed manual or seven-speed DSG gearbox. This is a very potent drivetrain, and in such a small and light car, it does feel explosive. For 2022, the hatchback comes with a top speed of 125 mph, making it the slowest option behind both Civic Type-R and Veloster N in the competition.

2022 Volkswagen Golf GTI Hatchback Front Angle Driving View

The Golf GTI has shed some pounds for the year 2022, which makes it a lot better car to drive now. Not only is the new GTI quicker in a straight line, but we also credit its electronically controlled limited-slip differential and brake-based torque vectoring for an uptick in entertainment value. Of course, the VW's expertly tuned chassis deserves as much praise as ever, with its sharp responses, not-too-firm, and not-too-soft ride quality. The latter was experienced with the hatch's highly adjustable adaptive dampers and a set of 19-inch wheels on the Autobahn trim.

With a bump in power, the Golf GTI is back in the league, and though it is still not the most powerful car here, it is certainly one of the best-performing cars now. The Honda Civic Type-R still holds the crown for being the most powerful one, and though it is quite a lot more expensive than all others, it is not that much of a value for money offering as the Golf GTI. When comparing the price tag of the hatchbacks in the competition, the Volkswagen Golf GTI comes out to be the cheapest option, making it a better value for money option.

2022 Volkswagen Golf GTI Hatchback Fuel Economy

Again, the official EPA ratings for the car are yet to be announced, so we really can’t comment on how efficient the new engine is going to be, but we estimate that its city and highway ratings will be 24 and 32 MPG, respectively. The current model has an EPA rating of 23/30/26 for the city/highway/combined cycles, respectively. Given that, it also has a pretty big fuel tank of 13.2 gallons capacity, which gives the Golf a real-world driving range of nearly 350 miles, which is quite decent.

It is the Golf GTI which is the most fuel-efficient car here, and the new Golf being even lighter, we are expecting it to be even more efficient, thus widening the gap between it and the competitors even more. When comparing the overall range of the hatchbacks in the competition, again the Golf GTI takes the front seat with the best-in-class figure of 343 miles combined, all thanks to its class-leading fuel tank capacity of 13.2 gallons, which it shares with Hyundai in the competition.

2022 Volkswagen Golf GTI Hatchback Interior

The interior of the 2022 model is leaps and bounds ahead of its predecessor, and it does amplify the overall experience by quite a few levels. While the outgoing seventh-generation 2021 Golf GTI (and prior models) were usually lauded for their luxury-like cabin appointments, opinions on the new generation are mixed. The whole interior is sleek, modern, and uncluttered, but some noticeable cheap-feeling plastics drag down the atmosphere. The cabin feels a lot more modern now, and this was much needed as the previous generation car used to look quite old in front of its competitor cars. The GTI's three-spoke steering wheel boasts a heavily contoured rim and touch-sensitive controls.

2022 Volkswagen Golf GTI Hatchback Dashboard

The seats have always been the best in class in the Golf GTI. While the Golf isn’t really as spacious as the Civic, which is pretty much the benchmark in terms of interior space in this class, still the Golf GTI manages to keep you comfortable and relaxed. Its bolstered front seats have red accents around their outer edges and iconic plaid inserts on the top and bottom cushions. And of course, they are heated and ventilated and come with power adjustments. The hatchback offers a standard cargo capacity of 17.4 cubic feet, which is not the least in the comparison.

When talking about the numbers, it is the Honda Civic Type-R that has the most spacious and best laid out cabin. While all the cabins feel equally premium and advanced, it’s the Golf GTI that takes the whole experience to a new level with a clutter-free design and very simplistic yet futuristic cabin design. When practicality is in question, the Honda Type-R is the most practical with a cargo capacity of 25.7 cubic feet. Some of the standout interior features are as follows:

  • Climatic manual air conditioning
  • Refrigerated/cooled box
  • Sports steering wheel with manual tilting, manual telescoping
  • Rear seat center armrest with pass-thru with storage
  • Driver and passenger heated-cushions

What’s there to keep you entertained?

There are two possible infotainment setups- an 8.25-inch touch screen running older software and an optional 10-inch touch screen with a newer interface- both function well and respond quickly to your touches. The smaller system is not something we would ever recommend as the new 10-inch system is just leaps and bounds ahead of it.

2022 Volkswagen Golf GTI Hatchback Infotainment Screen

It is all fancy and all, but once you start using it, you feel the need for buttons for some really basic things, and that is what ruins the experience a bit. Though don’t get us wrong, it is not at all a fault of the system, but it's just a concern of convenience and ease of use. Apart from a big infotainment screen, the car also has a variety of infotech for the convenience and enjoyment of the passengers inside. Some of the highlights of the infotainment system are as follows:

  • Standard 8.25-inch touchscreen
  • Optional 10-inch touchscreen
  • Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
  • Harman Kardon 480-watt premium audio system with nine speakers
  • In-built navigation
  • Voice controls
  • Bluetooth

2022 Volkswagen Golf GTI Hatchback Exterior

In terms of design, the Volkswagen designing team has done a phenomenal job to make the Golf look sportier and hotter than ever. It looks a lot better now, and thanks to those slim all-LED headlamps with DRLs, it does make the car look purposeful. The best design element has got to be those diamond-shaped fog lights and cornering lights inserts in the bumper which look like jewels.

2022 Volkswagen Golf GTI Hatchback Front Angle View

The older Golf used to look pretty plain, and even in the most sporty GTI trim, there were not a lot of sporty elements in the car. The 2022 model comes with 18-inch rims as standard, and if you opt for the Autobahn trim, the car is then shod with 19-inch rims, which look very aesthetically pleasing. Also, there is an All-black trim level for the Autobahn spec which makes the car look stealthy and even menacing.

Dimensions wise, the Golf GTI is not the biggest car here, in fact, it is pretty small when compared to the Civic Type-R. The MINI though is the smallest car here in pretty much all the dimensions, and it is also the lightest. The wheelbase remains an important aspect as it tells a lot about the space offering for the passengers inside. Here again, MINI is the smallest one, whereas Honda offers the longest wheelbase in the competition. Some of the standout exterior features are as follows:

  • Lip spoiler
  • Blacked-out front grille
  • Chrome tip exhaust
  • Fully galvanized steel body material
  • Power remote heated manual folding side-view door mirrors with turn signal indicator

2022 Volkswagen Golf GTI Hatchback Safety

The 2022 Golf GTI hasn’t been crash-tested yet, but we are expecting it to be a pretty safe car just like its predecessor. Volkswagen has quoted that the car will have common driver-assistance technology as standard along with important optional upgrades. The 2021 model earned a five-star overall rating from NHTSA. The IIHS rates the 2021 Golf at “Good” in five of its six crash tests, but only “Acceptable” in the front passenger-side overlap test. The NHTSA also gave it four stars for front and rollover protection. Those crash-test results are neither remarkable nor negligent.

The current Golf GTI comes with 13.4-inch discs at the front, while the rear comes with 12.2-inch ones. The 2022 Golf is lighter and faster than the outgoing model, so we are expecting some increase in the size of braking hardware as well. The feel from the brake pedal is though a bit spongy, but the GTI provides firm feedback and noteworthy stopping power, halting the hatch from 70 MPH in just 151 feet. This shows Volkswagen's focus on keeping the inmates safe inside. Some of the standout safety features include:

  • Front and rear ventilated disc brakes
  • Traction control
  • Side-impact bars
  • Automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Lane-departure warning and lane-keeping assist

2022 Volkswagen Golf GTI Hatchback Competition

2022 Volkswagen Golf GTI vs 2021 Honda Civic Type-R

The Honda Civic Type-R is pretty much the benchmark among budget performance hatchbacks as it is pretty powerful, handles like a charm, and is a pretty practical car as well. If we would have compared the Civic with the 2021 Golf, it would’ve won the competition straight away, but when pit against the 2022 Golf, there are a lot of things that the Golf does better than the Civic.

2021 Honda Civic Type-R

For once, the Golf GTI is a lot cheaper than the Civic, it is a better designed and more tech-laden cabin, and it looks better than the Civic as well. The Golf is also more fuel-efficient and pretty much on par with the Civic in terms of performance. So if you ask us, the Golf is a better value for money car than the Civic.

2022 Volkswagen Golf GTI vs 2021 Hyundai Veloster N

Hyundai Veloster N has always been one of our favorite cars among all the performance hatchbacks. Just the design of the Veloster makes you go ahead and buy one. But it’s not just the design where the Veloster packs a punch as it also has a very potent powertrain that produces more power than the Golf even after the upgrade.

2021 Hyundai Veloster N

While the Golf is cheaper and roomier than the Veloster, the Veloster claims a few points in terms of interior quality and feature list. At last, though, it is the Golf GTI that makes more sense than the Veloster N when putting the two against each other.

2022 Volkswagen Golf GTI vs 2021 MINI Cooper JCW

MINI Cooper JCW is maybe the least practical car here, but it also is a hoot to drive. The car is just like a big go-kart which you can skid around a theme park in whatever way. It is also the least powerful one here, but being pretty light on its feet, the MINI doesn’t feel slow at all.

2021 MINI Cooper JCW

Also, the MINI doesn’t look as good as the Golf due to its classic styling. The Golf GTI has its fair share of advantages over the MINI as it is more powerful, more fuel-efficient, cheaper, and more practical, thus getting a nod from us as the better pick between the two.

2022 Volkswagen Golf GTI Hatchback Final Verdict

The 2022 Volkswagen Golf GTI is expected to be a very potent car as it has always been. It is loved worldwide for its very capable powertrain and daily practicality. While being cheaper than all the rivals in the competition, it manages to offer a decent value in every possible way to stand strong in the segment. Hell, even Jeremy Clarkson has one, and if that is not enough to convince you how good of a car it is, we don’t know what would be.
