Detailed Review

If you love hot hatches and on the same time you want something to keep those eggs safe that you bought from the supermarket, check out the new 2017 Volkswagen Golf R. The Golf has been the people's favorite for decades because of the great performance it offers. The Golf is a reliable car and R adds the performance upgrades to your regular Golf. You can use the car for your family and they will love it. On the same time the car packs software to record your lap time so you know the Golf R is some serious stuff. The Golf R would have been my clear choice years ago but things are little tight now with its competition.

The Golf R starts at 15 grands more than the regular VW Golf. The 2017 year model of the Mk7 Golf R is priced at $35,655 with manual transmission and at $36,755 with automatic transmission. And there are some Optional features to increase the windows sticker price of the R. It is although hard to distinguish between the regular Golf and the Golf R. There are the R badges on the car, 4 on the body and R painted on brakes, but nothing flashy. If you were to drive your Golf R to the nearest gas station with your pal in his Focus RS, sadly your $40,000 Golf R will not attract any attention.

The Volkswagen Golf R has a powerful (stop laughing, it still has more power than most) DOHC I4, 4 cylinder engine that gives out 292 horsepower. This hot hatchback isn't slow either. The car doesn't have a launch control like the direct rival, Ford Focus RS, but still does a 0-60 mph in 4.6 seconds. If the Focus RS is slightly faster than the Golf R, its launch control is to be credited for that. And also the 50 extra horsepower in the Focus RS. Check out our in-depth review to dig in deep about the 2017 Volkswagen Golf R.

2017 Volkswagen Golf R Engine

8.7/10

The Volkswagen Golf R has the same 2.0L I4 engine as the regular VW Golf. But the R has a turbocharged engine that produces 292 horsepower from that tiny engine along with 280 lb-ft of torque. The trims of this car are divided on the basis of the transmission offered. The options are either a 6-Speed manual transmission or a 6-Speed Dual-Clutch automatic transmission. The engine noise sounds artificial. Sound that this 4-cylinder Golf R produces is much like a 5-Cylinder engine, and that is deceptive.

Acceleration

The Golf R is a fast hot hatch, fast enough to do a 0-60 mph in 4.6 seconds. That the territory dominated by the cars costing double the price of Golf R. One odd thing you will find in Golf R is that, the 0-60 mph timings are not same for the manual and automatic transmission. Turns out, the Golf R equipped with manual transmission is a few milliseconds slower and as you guessed it, the dual clutch automatic transmission makes the car a tad bit quicker. The Ford Focus RS comes only with manual transmission and that turns out to be a 0.1 seconds quicker than Golf R. And that matters a lot on Drag Strip.

Braking

Mk7 VW Golf R has comparatively better brakes with 13.4 in. on the front and 12.2 in. in the rear. This setup brings the Golf R from 60 mph to a standstill in just 102 ft. Volkswagen isn’t using those stickier, grippier tires on the Golf R as you will find on the Focus RS. So I would say the breaking could have been better.

Ride and Handling

VW Golf R drives pleasantly, something that would please a 40-year-old gentleman. But give the car to someone who is in his 20s and he will call the Golf R, boring. Ride in the Golf R is so smooth that it would trick you into thinking that you are in S-class. Maybe I exaggerated it but the ride is really smooth for a hatch. Compare it with Focus RS which rides bumpy all the time.

Golf R is a front wheel drive car, but some technology with the named asHaldex all-wheel drive system which converts this hatchback into an all-wheel drive. What is does is, sends 50% of the power to the rear tires to make that all-wheel drive mode effective. But obviously that does not feel as good as the actual all-wheel drive system. Results, Golf R doesn’t do well on the corners and feels a tad slower around the lap.

The engine in the Golf R is turbocharged but I think it isn’t tuned as well. There is recognizable turbo lag and this gives you a feel of understeer all the time. The Golf R understeers when going out of the corner and understeers most of the time. But apart from that, the Golf R is a fun car drive.

2017 Volkswagen Golf R Fuel Economy

8.1/10

The fuel economy in this car is something you can get going with. The car will run for 22 miles in the city for a gallon of fuel. And that same one gallon of fuel will take you 31 miles far on a highway. The combined gas mileage in Golf R is 25 mpg. So the fuel consumption in this car is normal and fall in the same category as other cars. 2017 VW Golf R gets a fuel tank capacity of 14.5 gallons.

Golf R by the Volkswagen has the exact same dimensions as the regular Golf and Golf GTI. Although the R is a tad bit heavier than the GTI. VW Golf R sits long at 168.4 inches with a width of 70.8 inches and height of 56.6 inches, same as the Golf GTI. Those dimensions make the Golf R smaller than the Ford Focus RS in every aspect. The Golf R is smaller than the Subaru WRX and Civic Type R but those cars do not comes with a proper hatchback body style.

2017 Volkswagen Golf R Competition

Ford Focus RS Vs Golf R GTI

Ford Focus RS is a true competitor to the Polo R. Comes in the same price segment and does beats the Polo R in most segments. Focus RS comes with 50 more horsepower and is a tad bit quicker than the Polo R. But the ride quality is not comfortable as it is in Polo R. Sure, the young will love the ride in the Focus RS because the young want it rush and not a calm ride. The Polo R has a smooth ride experience and it feels calm even when rushing to some place. But turbo lag gives a sensation of understeer and that is something that will annoy you in VW Polo R.

Subaru WRX STI Vs Golf R GTI

Subaru WRX (called Subaru Impreza WRX earlier) also comes with a turbo 4-cylinder engine. Undoubtedly the WRX looks way more wicked and aggressive than the calm looking Golf. It looks like that WRX will outperform the Golf R, but that is not the case. The Subaru turns out to be slower than our fan favorite Golf R. Both falls under the category of rally cars. And acceleration doesn’t matter as much as handling on dirt tracks. It is difficult not to be excited in the Subaru. With its 2.5L turbocharged engine, it makes some serious noise to wake the dead nearby. Sadly you don’t get any of that in the Golf R. Golf is just fast without giving that big smile on your face.

Honda Civic Type R Golf R GTI

I have to say the Golf R packs less power of the pack here. Civic Type R falls in the same category as the Golf R. Not the hatchback, by same category I meant Rally cars. So here the Civic Type R packs a few horses more than the Golf R under its hood and that must result in a quicker car. That is not the case, the Golf R is faster than the Type R, although the Type R has the higher top speed than the Golf R. VW really seems to be in trouble with the competition making the cars more powerful than the Golf R. But the Volkswagens are more reliable than the others.

2017 Volkswagen Golf R Final Verdict

Volkswagen Golf R is a nice small hatchback with good power under its hood for its size. The ride quality is so smooth that it is an eligible candidate to be the everyday car. On the same time the Golf R might not be a good idea for the racing for pink slips because Golf R might lose to the cars like Focus RS. But it feels great to take it out on a track day, not to mention it comes with all the software to record your lap information. It’s like it is meant to be taken on track. For almost 40 grand, the car is great but the design is so underrated that your little track monster might go unnoticed in the neighborhood.
