Detailed Review

The new Volkswagen Golf SportWagen belongs to a rare breed of cars which offers the utility of a SUV to go with the compactness and agility of a small car. In reality, this feature is enough for the Golf SportWagen to gain entry into this segment and compete with the likes of the Subaru Outback 2.5i, the Ford Escape S and the Mazda CX-5 Sport.Starting with a price of $21,580.

The 2017 Volkswagen Golf Sports Wagen SUV offers four trims currently. It is a rear wheel drive with the 1.8 liter DOHC Turbo powered engine which has a 5 speed manual transmission mode as standard.

2017 Volkswagen Golf SportWagen Engine

8.0/10

"With 170 horsepower, the 1.8-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine should prove potent enough for most drivers. It'll have to because it's the only choice. Despite the vehicle's name, there's not much "sport" to the car's handling abilities." - Edmunds

Engine and Transmission

The 2017 Volkswagen Golf SportsWagen SUV is powered by a 1.8 Liter DOHC 16V turbocharged Engine at produces 170 hp of power and 184 lb-ft of torque, which provides rear wheel drive with 5 speed manual transmission as standard.

The starting of this car can be a bit jarring and gives best results when run on gasoline.

Models Volkswagen Golf SportWagen Wagon TSI S Subaru Outback 2.5i Ford Escape S Mazda CX-5 sport
MSRP $21,580 $25,645 $23,750 $24,045
Engine 1.8L TSI 4 Cylinder Turbocharged 2.5L 4cyl 2.5L i-VCT 2.5L DOHC 16-Valve 4-Cylinder

Horsepower 170 hp 175 hp 168 hp 187 hp
Torque 184 lb-ft 174 lb-ft 170 lb-ft 185 lb-ft

All the three rivals offer a different version of the 2.5 liter engine with comparable torque and power outputs. The Golf SportWagen too has power similar to them, although with a much smaller engine.

Here, while the VW has a Manual transmission option, the Mazda and Ford offer a 6 speed Automatic transmission as standard. The Subaru though does something different with a CVT transmission.

Acceleration

This is something a Volkswagen is not known for and expectedly, it just manages to be at par, taking 7.9 seconds to cover 60 mph and 15.9 seconds to cover the quarter mile.

Models Volkswagen Golf SportWagen Wagon TSI S Subaru Outback 2.5i Ford Escape S Mazda CX-5 sport
0-60 MPH 7.9 sec 7.1 sec 9.1 sec 8.9 sec
Quarter mile 15.9 sec 15.7 sec 16.8 sec 16.6 sec
Engine 1.8L 2.5L 2.5L 2.5L
Emission (Tons/yr of CO2 Emissions @ 15K mi/year) 6.3 6.3 7.3 6.5

The Toyota powered Subaru is the best here with just over 7 seconds to cover 60 mph. What comes as a surprise is that the much maligned Ford and Mazda are way too much at the bottom, with both clocking around 9 seconds for the same.

Handling and Steering

Like the case with all Volkswagen, the steering requires minimal effort and this car is such a beauty to drive on the highways especially. The handling offers a unique blend of an SUV and hatchback, as this car is agile around the corners but at the same time, is rock solid at high speeds.

Braking

The 2017 Volkswagen Golf SportsWagen SUV braking figures are not yet known ,but considering the acceleration figures of the VW and the others, it is expected to be around the equal range.

Here, the Ford is the quickest to stop with 112 feet, while the Subaru is a little behind at 120 feet. The Mazda is at third with 126 feet.

The wheel size too is exceptional considering the size of these cars.

2017 Volkswagen Golf SportWagen Fuel Economy

7.6/10

The 2017 Volkswagen Golf SportsWagen SUV gives a mileage of 25 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway. With a combined mpg of 28, this car is the best in this regard too, considering the smaller engine.

Model Volkswagen Golf SportWagen Wagon TSI S Subaru Outback 2.5i Ford Escape S Mazda CX-5 sport
MPG (city) 25 25 21 24
MPG (highway) 35 32 29 31

All the rivals are pretty comparable here too, with the Subaru too giving 28 mpg combined. The Mazda is at 27 mpg, while the last placed Ford isn' t far off too with 24 mpg

2017 Volkswagen Golf SportWagen Interior

9.0/10

"A large greenhouse with ample glass and a simple, sensible control layout make the SportWagen's cabin a pleasant, user-friendly environment. Premium materials and a conservative design make this wagon seem more entry-luxury than economy compact." - Edmunds

Seating and Comfort

The interiors too have been very well designed and has a great feel to all buttons and switches. The dash has been very well designed too.

Cargo Capacity:

The 2017 VW does just about par in this segment too with 66.5 ft of space. However, The trunk of the Golf Sports Wagen can easily hold a few duffle bags among others. It has a wide opening with a flat surface, which is good for inserting and removing those heavy bags.

Cargo Volume to rear seat up (ft.3) 30.4 35.5 34.3 30.9

All the other three rivals, are pretty much nearby here too. The Subaru is the best with 73.3 ft, while the VW and Ford are a close second at 67. The Mazda though, needs some work with 59 feet.

Dimension and Weight

The 2017 Volkswagen Golf Sports Wagen SUV is the lightest car in this segment and that too by a big margin. However, the solid and muscular built has always been associated with the Volkswagen brand, and this is something which makes the driver very confident.

Track width (in) F/R 61.0/59.9 61.8/62.2 61.5/61.6 61.8/61.9

The Subaru here has the best dimensions among its peers and is also the heaviest. This leads to loads of space on the inside of the car too. The ground clearance is too manmoth for this car.

The clearance part is something VW needs to look at with the Golf SportWagen offering about 5.4 inches of it. Easily the worst in this segment.

Some of the exterior features include:

  • Light Tinted Glass
  • Speed Sensitive Rain Detecting Variable Intermittent Wipers w/Heated Jets
  • Fully Galvanized Steel Panels

2017 Volkswagen Golf SportWagen Competition

Volkswagen Golf SportWagen vs Subaru Outback 2.5i

The fight between the Volkswagen and the Subaru is pretty tight. Both have a similar engine output and are quite similar mechanically too. The VW though does have better interiors. And at a cheaper price is the definite go to car in this comparison.

Volkswagen Golf SportWagen vs Ford Escape S

The Ford is does have a bigger engine and a much better output. The ground clearance and braking is also pretty good in the escape. The seating though is bench type in the Escape and it definitely lacks in comfort.

However, with such a high price and lack of premium qualities, make the Volkswagen Golf SportWagen a clear winner here too.

Volkswagen Golf SportWagen vs Mazda CX-5 Sport

While the Mazda does have a better pickup and acceleration along with the trunk capacity of the Golf SportWagen, it is genuinely a no match for the Volkswagen as the main purpose of the SUV is what the VW specializes in.

With a better feel and interiors, along with a better ground clearance and towing capacity, not to mention the built quality, and the underdog Mazda is actually no match to the Volkswagen.

2017 Volkswagen Golf SportWagen Final Verdict

The 2017 Volkswagen Golf SportsWagen SUV is a seriously good vehicle which can envy many, and quite expectedly, the Subaru and the Mazda are beaten quite easily.

However, the actual fight is with the Ford Escape S. The ford is always known for its built quality and this one is one of its kind. The engine and acceleration too is top notch in this car. However, the VW specializes in something else. When you take into account the drive quality of the SportWagen and the comfort on offer, the Escape seems distant second.

Thus there is no doubt that the much more cheaper and premium Volkswagen Golf SportWagen is the car for you in this segment.
