2022 Volkswagen ID.5 electric SUV

At the moment, Volkswagen hasn’t revealed any information about the availability, trim levels or pricing options. But from the speculations, we may expect the ID.5 to be offered in two tech-loaded trim levels: Base and Pro S, with the later expected to feature performance boost and Autonomous driving aids in its arsenal. 

What’s the expected price and release date of the 2022 Volkswagen ID.5?

The ID.5 is undergoing track testing as we speak, and it looks like it will hit American dealerships soon, but there is still no confirmation from Volkswagen. And considering some upgrades in the features and tweaks in the structure, you can expect the Volkswagen ID.5 to start at a price of $45,000.

The base variant of the Volkswagen ID.5 is sufficiently equipped and comes at $45,000. While the price for the Pro S is not yet confirmed, keeping in mind performance, feature set, and the MSRP, the Base trim will be viable for most buyers.

The ID.5 is likely to get the same powertrain that has already been shared with the ID.4. It comes in a single motor setup which is powering the rear wheels, and it is standard. However, you can opt for its AWD configuration at some extra cost, in which one extra motor is added to it which powers the front wheels. The 77 kWh battery pack is common in both Volkswagen ID.4 variants.

The single-motor powertrain is capable of producing 201 horsepower and 228 lb-ft. of torque, while the dual-motor setup produces 301 hp. VW claims that the 2022 ID.5 can sprint from 0 to 60 mph in 7.8 seconds, which is quite lethargic compared to the competitors. However, the dual-motor setup can achieve the same slightly quicker. 

The motor in the Model Y is superior in terms of power figures, but the Mach-E surprisingly is the fastest in the competition. On the other hand, the ID.5 and the Kona electric have equally powered motors, but the Kona is significantly quicker than ID.5. 

How does the 2022 Volkswagen ID.5 handle?

The handling of the ID.4 is not something to appreciate much, but we can expect a way better handling and ride quality in the ID.5. The curb weight of the SUV plays a major role in it's handling, and the ID.4 due to its bulky body, handles less sharply than the others in competition. 

The 77 kWh battery of the ID.4 has enough capacity to power this SUV up to 250 miles between charges, and with the same setup, ID.5 is also likely to deliver the same range. However, you can expect a better range from it if the more refined powertrain is on offer. 

The battery can be charged in 110 or 240-volt sources, and it is also capable of DC fast charging that can fuel your car for a significant range in just 30 minutes. Moreover, it also features a regenerative braking system, where the battery gains some charge whenever you apply the brakes, which will further enhance the range.

The MPGe figures of the ID.5 are not very impressive. Moreover, despite being the largest battery capacity in the segment, it fails to deliver a long driving range. The model Y has a much-refined motor which along with the power, promises a superior economy too. 

Although the SUV has been seen on the roads, the interior hasn’t been hinted at by Volkswagen. So, whatever this section contains is the speculations from the ID.4. And we believe that it is most likely to be identical with some minor modifications in features. 

The cabin is made with a minimalistic and futuristic design approach, where it looks like Volkswagen had just launched its concept car without major alterations. Leather and soft-touch materials used all over the dash and door panels, and the ambient lighting makes the cabin premium. The brushed aluminum trim that runs across the dash, looks absolutely eye-catching. The leather-wrapped in the steering as well where it comes with the heating function and a flat bottom design. 

You might confuse it with the shift lever, which is quite normal with this car. The shifter is present behind the steering wheel attached to the cluster, which is quite handy and simple to use. With this car, you can expect a premium and comfortable ride. The seats are covered in leatherette material where the front seats feature heating and massaging function. In the rear, it offers plenty of room to accommodate 3 adults. 

The room on offer with the ID.5 is almost equal to all three, but the cargo capacity offered by it is unmatchable. You are getting a 30.3 cu-ft. of storage volume, where you can easily fit your long weekend getaway stuff. The cargo volume in the Kona is the minimum, which is almost equal to that of some hatchbacks.

2022 Volkswagen ID.5: infotainment and connectivity

The 10-inch infotainment panel in the ID.4’s prototype is a bit laggy, however, VW assured that it will not in the case of a production car. The same panel with enhanced response and some added features can be expected in the ID.5. The panel can also be upgraded to a 12-inch setup with the optional statement package. 

Some of the generic features of its infotainment include FM/ HD radio, navigation, 6-speakers sound system with center speaker, wireless charging, Bluetooth connectivity, and USB ports. While the highlighted features include:

• Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Mirror Link.
• Wireless App-connect smartphone integration.
• VW Car-Net services.
•  SiriusXM radio with 3-months all-access trial subscription.
• Gesture controls. 

During testing on the tracks, it is very clear that ID.5 looks almost similar to the ID.4 from the front and side profile. While, a noticeable change can be found at the rear, which has now got little extended, and a spoiler got added to it, which truly gives a coupe-like structure.The ID series is somewhat different from the other VW cars in terms of exterior styling. The design approach is quite simplistic, which shows a lot of smooth curvy elements rather than cuts and creases. 

The headlamps look simple but the projector LED setup and the DRLs which join both the headlamps look very aggressive. There are some fake air vents around the SUV, which are entirely cosmetic. 19-inch machined aluminum alloys are offered standard with the ID.4, while its 1st edition package features 20-inches alloys. A thick body cladding that continues to the rear, gives it a true SUV-like appeal.

The ID.5 looks much more elegant compared to others, but due to its body weight, the car fails to deliver the performance that you might be expecting from it. Moreover, the curb weight plays a significant role in its handling quality, which is just on par. Among the competition, the Tesla Model Y measures the longest car in the lot, while the Volkswagen ID.4 is expected to be the tallest. The Model Y comes with the greatest ground clearance, while the Mustang Mach-E offers the longest wheelbase. 

Since the ID.5 was built on the ID.4 architecture, so we can expect a plethora of standard safety features that are on par with the most luxury cars. Also, the driver assistance features are very well designed to keep the driver hassle free. Some of the features include:

If you are really looking forward to an upgraded electric machine from Volkswagen, then it is definitely worth waiting for the ID.5. The car is similar to the ID.4 in most of the aspects, but you can definitely expect a performance upgrade with its motor, along with several other new features. The exterior design has been tweaked from the rear, where it looks more coupe-like. And it has loads of features and comfort. Considering it may potentially come at a starting price of $45,000, the 2022 Volskwagen ID.5 emerges as a promising package. The key downside of owning one would probably be the compromise in performance.
