The new Volkswagen Jetta offers impressive performance, outstanding fuel economy, and upscale interior features with its entirely new design philosophy that resembles the Passat. Buyers will now get the turbocharged engine from the Golf coupled with an automatic transmission or a 6-speed manual for the base S trim. The new Jetta offers a more engaging driving experience with impressive cornering agility with the new MQB platform, which might not be noticeable with its familiar exterior design language.

Which Trim should you buy?

The starting price of Jetta is very competitive. The base trim gets a wide range of amenities but misses out on premium comfort features and driver aids. The mid-range SE trim can be a good choice with most premium features and driver aids. The trim adds heated seats, power sliding panoramic sunroof, and leather upholstery among others.

2019 Volkswagen Jetta Engine and Performance

6.4/10

The 2019 Volkswagen Jetta equips a potent 1.4-Liter turbocharged engine as standard which is coupled with an 8-speed automatic on all the trims, with a 6-speed manual available for the base S trim. The engine is rated for 147 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque which is sent only to the front wheels with no option for an AWD available.

The powertrain can run on regular fuel, unlike rivals that prefer unleaded premium gas. Interestingly, the Jetta is tactfully designed with a well-balanced power-to-weight ratio that enables impressive handling. The acceleration capability of the sedan is better than most rivals as well and it can clock 0-60 mph in 7.7 seconds and cover a quarter-mile in 16.0 seconds.

In terms of performance, the VW Jetta is the quickest followed by Mazda 3 Sport which is marginally behind the Jetta. The Honda Civic is right on the tail of the Mazda while the Toyota Corolla is the most sluggish of the lot. The Jetta equips the smallest capacity turbo engine that generates impressive power as compared to the bigger engines of rivals. All sedans in this class get a front-wheel-drive configuration.

How well does the 2019 Volkswagen Jetta handle?

The handling ability of the sedan is one of the best in class. Tweaked to perfection, the new steering setup feels nimble and confident at high speeds. It equips a standard front-wheel-drive system that maintains good traction. Along with this, the ABS and traction control maintain an adequate grip on slippery roads.

The R-line trim has a sportier suspension setup and gets better handling. Overall handling of the car improves with a tactical distribution of weight. Multiple driver aids are also added like Lane-Keep Assist, Blind-Spot Monitoring, and Adaptive Cruise Control. The higher trims also get a Front-Collision Warning system.

2019 Volkswagen Jetta Braking Performance

The brakes in the new Jetta are promising. Top-Notch performance along with athletic handling make the Jetta comfortable and confident whereas the brakes do a great job of boosting driver confidence to push the car to its threshold. Advanced systems like ABS and traction control further supports optimum braking in all conditions.

That being said, the stopping distance isn’t quite impressive, in spite of the low curb weight and large brakes of the car. The Jetta features large 11.5-inch rotors in the front and 10.8-inch discs in the rear which halts the car in a panic braking 70-0 mph scenario in a braking distance of 191 feet, which is pretty high even by the segment standards.

The largest brakes are featured in the Volkswagen Jetta but it fails to impress us in this regard but offers great dynamic control and optimum braking at all conditions, thanks to the effective weight distribution and agile chassis. The most impressive stopping distance is showcased by the Mazda 3 sedan despite its heavier curb weight. The Honda and Toyota cars on the other hand have similar stopping distances.

2019 Volkswagen Jetta Fuel Economy

7.0/10

The new Volkswagen Jetta delivers above-average fuel economy and houses a larger fuel tank to maintain a longer driving range. With the impressive mileage, every weekend can be a getaway without spending too much money on fuel. The sedan delivers 30 MPG on city roads and 40 MPG on highways. Together with the large 13.2-gallon fuel tank, the Jetta delivers an outstanding 500 miles of highway cruising range.

The best frugality is delivered by the Honda Civic with around 42 miles on highways and 36 mpg combined. But, with a comparatively smaller fuel tank, the range of Civic is similar to competitors. The Civic also gets a CVT gearbox, boosting efficiency. However, the Jetta retains the best driving range with its balanced mileage and large fuel tank. The Mazda 3 and the Corolla offer a similar fuel efficiency that is considerably lower than the Jetta but employ an identical gas tank capacity.

2019 Volkswagen Jetta Interior

8.1/10

Volkswagen has transformed the interior space of the 2019 Volkswagen Jetta with better amenities and comfortable seating. The cabin gets new color options for upholstery and door panels. You can tune in the car to every mood with customizable 10-color ambient lighting. The front seats get heating and ventilation features to ensure absolute long-term comfort.

Moreover, the driver personalization option can store up to four driver seat-memory positions, driver-assist preference, ambient color, and desired temperature. Furthermore, the Volkswagen Digital Cockpit is standard on SEL and SEL Premium models. Overall accessibility inside the cabin improves with multiple pockets, a central armrest bin, and ergonomically laid-out controls.

The new Jetta is more spacious than many with ample room for both front and rear passengers and their luggage. However, the Toyota Corolla and the Mazda 3 boast better legroom for front occupants. The Civic has the most compact cabin but offers the biggest boot in this comparison. The Corolla and Mazda 3 sedan have similarly sized trunks which are marginally smaller than the Jetta. Key interior features are:

  • Simulated leather upholstery
  • Leather steering and heated front seats
  • Driver’s seat memory up to four
  • Steering-mounted controls
  • Optional rear seat heating function under Cold Weather package

What’s there to keep you entertained?

Entertainment and engagement are at maximum levels inside the new Jetta. The sedan packs an all-new Volkswagen infotainment system. It gets a standard 6.5-inch touchscreen interface for SE and R-Line models while a bigger 8-inch screen is seen in SEL and SEL Premium. A standard 4-speaker audio system comes with entry-level models while an updated 8-speaker premium audio system by Beats is standard on the top-end versions.

Along with these, it includes Satellite Radio and navigation functions. The Digital Cockpit is easy to configure and is also fully customizable. The memory function can retain information like ambient light setting, driver-assistance preference, and infotainment panel display. Moreover, a thoughtful design statement along with the latest connectivity options like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto adds more convenience to the new Jetta. Key infotainment features are:

  • Standard 6.5-inch touchscreen display in entry-level trims and bigger 8-inch display in SEL and SEL Premium models
  • Digital Cockpit with fully customizable options
  • Premium 8-speaker audio system by Beats in SEL and SEL Premium models
  • In-built Navigation exclusive to SEL Premium
  • Bluetooth and USB connectivity
  • Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
  • Satellite Radio

2019 Volkswagen Jetta Exterior

5.0/10

The new Jetta is sleeker and more appealing in design. The German automaker has focused on a sporty outlook that is larger than before and gravitates more customers. The Jetta is thoroughly revised, but it still is quite simplistic as the outgoing model. The increased dimensions are also the reason behind the roomy cabin. There are sleek new LED headlights along with a redesigned bumper that makes it appear modern and on par with the rivals. Moreover, it comes with 17-inch alloy wheels as standard.

Though the 2019 Volkswagen Jetta is slightly on the heavier side of the spectrum, it gets a balanced weight distribution. The lowered stance although looks isn’t practical as it has the lowest ground clearance here. Competitors like Toyota Corolla and Honda Civic get better ground clearance despite the lower height.

2019 Volkswagen Jetta Safety

9.1/10

The newest generation of Jetta is built on the new MQB platform which makes it longer, taller, and adds structural rigidity. Hence, it scores a perfect 5-star overall rating in the tests conducted by the NHTSA while also scoring highly in the IIHS tests for the 2019 model year. Apart from the base model which is mostly barebones, the Volkswagen Jetta comes with advanced driver aids as well. The base model can also get these advanced features when bundled with the Driver Assistance package.

  • Lane-keep assist
  • Automatic high-beam lights
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Auto-dimming rearview mirror
  • Blind-spot monitoring system
  • Rear cross-traffic detection

2019 Volkswagen Jetta Competition

8.3/10

2019 Volkswagen Jetta vs 2019 Toyota Corolla

The dimensional supremacy of Jetta makes it a leader in its class. The new sedan is packed with a potent powertrain and steady acceleration. The Jetta is more tech-savvy with VW Digital Cockpit as compared to the Toyota Corolla. The Corolla on the other hand gets a bigger engine but is not as powerful. The exterior design of both cars is sleek with similar wheel sizes. But the Jetta takes a lead with a newer and sleeker design.

2019 Volkswagen Jetta vs 2019 Honda Civic

In terms of power, the Honda Civic is the segment leader. The acceleration capability of the car is impressive. Both the sedans offer decent interior space with premium features and modern technology. However, Honda seems to be slightly better in terms of built quality with its high-quality material usage. Both sedans equip a wide range of advanced safety features. But considering the Civic's unbeatable fuel economy, the Jetta seems to be the inferior of the two.

2019 Volkswagen Jetta vs 2019 Mazda 3 Sport

The Mazda 3 Sport has been on the top of its segment since its launch. The car has a cunning design philosophy and packs a premium interior along with the best-in-class braking performance. On the other hand, Volkswagen Jetta is powered by a potent turbo engine that delivers quicker acceleration figures and a better fuel economy. The cabin of the Jetta also feels a bit more premium in comparison.

2019 Volkswagen Jetta Final Verdict

Volkswagen has flipped the coin in favor of the consumers with the latest generation upgrade. The 2019 line-up commences the new-generation Jetta. A new design statement, a new MQB platform, and a newly crafted interior at an affordable price make the Jetta desirable. There are five trim levels to choose from. A bevy of advanced driver assistance technologies is in place to enhance the overall drive quality and ensure passenger safety. If you are looking for a spacious sedan with laudable fuel economy and engaging drive quality, the Volkswagen Jetta will not disappoint.
