Detailed Review

The Mark VII Jetta, debuted back in 2011 with a major design change in 2014, gets a little to no faceliftin the 2017 year model. As the Mark VII Jetta is on the end of its manufacturing year, Volkswagen isn'texpected to add some major changes in this model, rather it is expected to bring the new in auto techfor its 2019 Mark VII. The Volkswagen has cut the costs in its 2017 Jetta which has upset its loyalcustomers but most will still be happy to own it. In fact, the Jetta was the company's most selling modelfor the June 2017. Almost 10,000 Jetta-s were sold in America in the month of June, 2017.

The 2017 year model of the Volkswagen Jetta comes with a starting price of little under the shade of$18,000 for the manual transmission and goes all the way up to almost $29,000 with the Automatictransmission of its top trim GLI model. Because of the cost cutting on the Jetta, it comes with theHalogen head lamps instead of the LEDs. Although the day time running lights are LEDs. TheInfotainment screen is as big as your Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus, diagonally. And the Android Auto or AppleCarPlay is making its way to more and more cars, including this Jetta.

The Jetta, as you might know, is a family sedan. Cost-cutting in the Jetta can be observed all over the car and in the inside too. The 2017 Jetta bears the same Volkswagen design language which might seem a little similar to its sister brand, Audi. The interior looks and feels cheap. The leatherette, artificial Leather on the seats and on the armrest on the center and the doors. The dashboard, doors and center console are made up of hard plastic. But opting for a high trim of the car will replace that hard plastic with the soft touch material. But this car isn’t all disappointment. Stick with us and we will tell you more about the 2017 Jetta.

2017 Volkswagen Jetta Features

7.2/10

Volkswagen is known to offer a long list of trims available for its cars, to suit the buying choice of, theoretical, everyone. Primarily there are four trims are available: S, SE, Sport and SEL. The GLI trim offered, is just the thrilling variant of the SE trim. S and SE trims are offered in both, 5-speed Manual and 6-speed Automatic transmission. While the sporty 210HP GLI comes with 6-speed manual and automatic. The Sport and SEL come only with 6-speed Automatic transmission. As always, opting for a higher trim will bring you more features than the comparatively cheaper trim.

2017 Volkswagen Jetta Engine

7.0/10
"With three engines and three transmissions, the 2017 Volkswagen Jetta has arguably the most appealing powertrain lineup in its class."- Edmunds

Powering S and SE trim level of the Volkswagen Jetta is a 1.4L, producing 150 horsepower. Although opting for the Sport, SEL and SEL Premium will upgrade you to a 1.8 L engine which produces 170 horsepower. And the full of thrill trim of the Jetta, GLI is powered by a 2.0 L intercooled Turbo Premium Unleaded I-4 engine producing 210 breaking horsepower @ 5300 RPM. Jetta comes in 5-speed manual transmission as well as the 6-speed automatic transmission. While the GLI variant has the 6-speed transmission for both, automatic and manual.

Acceleration

The 1.4 liter model of the Jetta pulls the car to 60 mph in the 7.7 seconds. The powerful variant, GLI pulls the car from 0 to 60 mph in 6.6, as claimed by the Volkswagen. These stats make the car cover a quarter mile of distance in under a short of 16 seconds. Unless you are going for the GLI trim, all the other trims feels slower than the cars like Kia Forte.

Braking

The Volkswagen Jetta is a family sedan and the smaller brakes at 11.3 inches in the front and 10.8 inches, works just fine. The car is a bit heavier at a little short of 3000 lbs. The braking distance is not as interesting as the sub-hundred figure achieved by the sports cars, but at the 185 feet of braking distance, it fits right in with the cars of its class.

Ride and Handling

Volkswagen is constantly trying to improve their car every year to keep up with the competition. The independent rear suspension is made standard for every trim of the Jetta. Because, why not. The result is a well-balanced driving experience. Not excellent in any particular driving aspect but better in every aspect, giving you that driving performance satisfaction.

Going with the higher models like the SEL or GLI trim, only improve the experience, over that balanced ride. Making those powerful Jetta variants fun to drive. So it is safe to say that the cost-cutting has been applied to cosmetics only, and the powertrain and suspension is more refined than before.

2017 Volkswagen Jetta Fuel Economy

8.3/10

Something to really like about the Volkswagen Jetta is the fuel economy. Giving 28 miles per gallon in the city and 40 miles per gallon on the highway, making a combined of 33 mpg. It is obvious that opting for a powerful variant will give you lesser fuel economy. The GLI model gives the fuel economy of 23 mpg in city and 33 mpg on highway, for the manual transmission. The GLI model is equipped with Automatic transmission does 1 mpg better than the Manual one.

Seating and Comfort

In the Volkswagen Jetta, you get the seating for five. Two on the front including the driver and three in the back. You can pull out the middle armrest with two cup holders in the rear, if it is unoccupied. Unfortunately, there are no air vents for the rear seats but you do get a 12V power outlet on the rear. The rear seats are the most spacious you can get in this class. Sadly, Seats are leatherette. Leather seats would have been great in this car, at least for higher trim model.

Interior Features

The 2017 Volkswagen Jetta does not exactly have those premium features on the inside. Instead, all the features are pretty much standard for the cars nowadays. Front seats are 6-way adjustable but manual adjustable instead of power adjustable. Same is with the steering wheel which is covered with leather in higher trims. All four windows are power windows.

 • 6-way manual front seat adjustments
 • Front bucket seats
 • Height adjustable front seats
 • Leatherette seat material
 • Driver seat with manual adjustable lumbar support
 • Split-folding rear seatback
 • 4 one-touch power windows

Infotainment

The infotainment is not something to praise about, in this car. The only thing in the infotainment which is worth mentioning is the Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, to link your car with your smartphone.

 • 4 Total speakers
 • Auxiliary Audio Input and USB with external media control
 • Single USB connection
 • Two 12 volt power outlet
 • Memory card slot
 • AM/FM Stereo
 • External temperature display
 • Trip computer

Cargo

Cargo is the other best thing in this car. The boot space is surprisingly spacious in this car at 15.7 cubic feet as compared to 12.4 cubic feet in the Mazda3, 14.4 in Elantra and 14.9 cubic feet in the Kia Forte. The trunk of the Jetta comes with a spare tire to help you in the flat tire situations.

Dimension and Weight

The Jetta is just as heavy as the competition car, Mazda3 sport a little less than 3000 lbs. The Jetta comes in, on average, 2.5 inches longer than the competition cars resulting in the larger space back in the trunk. The width of the car is at 70 inches and the height at the 56.6 inches. While the other cars the wheelbase around 106.3 inches, the Jetta has a relatively shorter wheelbase at 104.4 inches. Best thing is, this does not trade off with the leg room in the back. A 6 feet person can sit on the rear with some leg room space left unoccupied.

It is 2017 and this car still comes with the halogen head lamps. Don't get me wrong, I do not hate halogen lights but those are things of past now. The always on, daytime running lights are LED. The car comes with a sensor on the door handles which you touch to unlock your car. And touch on the inside of the door handle to open the door of the car.

 • Halogen Head lamps
 • LED daytime running lights
 • Glass Sunroof
 • Body-color bumpers
 • Hands-Free Entry (Finger sensor on door handles)
 • Remote Keyless power door locks
 • Dual steel exhaust pipes

Wheels

The Volkswagen Jetta has the standard 16 inches wheels for its S and SE trims. Upgrading to SEL and Sport trims will give you the 17” wheels and the GLI comes with 18” Mallory wheels.

 • 16" Steel wheels for SE trim
 • 17" Lancaster wheels for SEL trim
 • 18" Mallory wheels for GLI trim

2017 Volkswagen Jetta Competition

Kia Forte LX vs Volkswagen Jetta

Kia's offering is relatively new against the decades long heritage of the VW Jetta. Kia Forte gets a plus point over the Jetta over it's well-built interior against the cheap looking hard plastic interior of the Jetta. Although the Forte lacks behind the Jetta with poor handling and producing relatively less power from the same I-4 engine, so minus one point.

Mazda Mazda3 Sport vs Volkswagen Jetta

The Sedan trim of the Mazda3, dubbed as Sport, gives the competition to the Volkswagen Jetta. Mazda3 has the I-4 engine that produces 155 horsepower @ 6000 rpm, a tad more than what Jetta S and SE trim produces. And hence has the faster acceleration. Driving experience is great in both the cars. Where Mazda3 outshines the Jetta us it's well built interior and eye catching exterior design. You can consider that the Mazda3 is a better offering over the VW Jetta.

Hyundai Elantra SE vs Volkswagen Jetta

Hyundai has the Elantra SE to battle against the Jetta. Elantra has great fuel economy, so does the Jetta. Elantra has larger-than-average cargo space, Jetta has even more than Elantra. Elantra has a long list of trims and features, so does the Volkswagen offer for it's Jetta. Things are already tough for the Elantra and it gets worse as you get behind the wheel. The driving experience is average, compared to fun experience in the Jetta. The Volkswagen Jetta is a clear choice here.

2017 Volkswagen Jetta Final Verdict

The Volkswagen Jetta stands true to its decades long legacy. Despite the cost-cutting which the Volkswagen Jetta has gone through, does upset many. The interior is cheap looking, all hard plastic. And the only leather covered accessory in the car is the steering wheel. The seats are leatherette, with manual adjustment instead of the power adjustable seats you might find in other cars. But the performance is better than than before. It is more fun and thrilling this year. Opting the GTI equivalent trim of Jetta, dubbed as GLI, will give you the best experience. So if you do not mind the cheap interior and want a thrill ride, the Jetta is definitely a pick for you.
