While the Tiguan received a complete redesign a couple of years back, the 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan gets additional driver safety features aids along with a Wi-Fi hotspot as standard and gets a price hike of just $675. Also new this year is the SE R-Line Black trim positioned between SE and SEL trims. While many might also be disappointed with the news of VW reducing its standout 6-years/72,000 miles warranty to a more typical 4-years/50,000 miles warranty, on the upside, Volkswagen now offers 2 years of complimentary maintenance with its cars.

2020 Volkswagen Tiguan for Sale

The 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan is available for sale at an MSRP starting at $25,965 including the $1,020 destination fee which is also up by $25 this year. Lease deals start at a monthly payment of $355 for 36 months while the finance offers start at $693/month for a 60-month finance duration. Expect a maintenance cost of about $5,600 for the first 5 years of its ownership.

2020 Volkswagen Tiguan Buying Advice

After its redesign back in 2018, VW is not expected to redesign the Tiguan until the 2022 model year. Also, since the 2020 Tiguan gains a considerable amount of new features and just a minor price jump, it is better to opt for the current model year Volkswagen Tiguan over its older models.

The 2020 Tiguan gets no choices in terms of engine and transmission, but the option to opt for the third row of seats is what makes it stand out against its competition. While the Mazda CX-5 offers much sportier styling and handling, the Honda CR-V and Nissan Rogue both are more affordable and have lower ownership costs. That said, if features and interior space is your priority, the VW Tiguan is amongst the leaders of the pack.

Expert Review, Pricing Analysis and Buying Guide

The 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan comes in a total of 10 Trims which include both AWD and front-wheel drive configurations. The 7-seat configuration is available on the front-wheel-drive configuration while the 5-seat configuration is available only on the AWD variants. It gets a 2.0L 4-cylinder turbo engine as the common powertrain across the trim lineup and is priced at an MSRP range of $25,965 - $39,815.

J.D. Power rates the Tiguan 2020 with an overall reliability rating of 79/100 which falls way behind the segment leaders like the Chevrolet Equinox and Kia Sportage. Also, the VW Tiguan demands higher repairs and maintenance costs and suffers heavy depreciation. Therefore expect the 5-year cost to own amount to be around $44,950 which again is considerably higher than the rivals.

Buying Advice

With the distinctive styling and added features, the 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan in the SE R-Line Black trim offers the most value to buyers. At an MSRP of $32,615, the sporty body kit and the 4Motion AWD drivetrain makes you stand out from the crowd and it yet doesn't break your bank.

Features
8.0/10

"The Tiguan has a comfortable and well-equipped cabin, but its underwhelming engine and below-average fuel economy hold it back." - Cars.USNews

Volkswagen has made some small changes in the terms of the features list of the 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan. The previously optional R-Line package is now offered as a separate trim this year and also adds a few features to the mix.  All the trims come equipped with a 2.0L 4-cylinder turbo engine as the common powertrain and only the top-end SEL Premium R-Line trim gets the 4Motion AWD drivetrain as standard.

Volkswagen Digital Cockpit

VW has made the driver safety aids like the forward collision warning with automating emergency braking and the blind-spot camera with rear cross-traffic alert as standard across the lineup. Upgrading to the SE trim gets you dual-zone climate control, a larger & better infotainment system with satellite radio, a power driver seat & heated front seats, and leatherette upholstery for about $1,150 of additional money.

Engine and Performance
7.5/10

The engine delivers a generally flaccid response when you hit the gas -Cars.USNews.com

Since its facelift in 2020, VW has persisted with its famed 2.0L Turbocharged motor that generates 184 hp and 221 lb-ft of torque. The Motor is very refined and doesn't feel stressed even when pushed to the limits. The TSI motor generates class-leading Torque while the power Figure ranks among the best in the segment. The 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan comes standard with front-wheel drive while the 4Motion all-wheel drive is available in all trims as an option except for the top 2 trims where it is standard.

The 4 Motion-equipped Tiguans however tradeoff their Off-Road Credentials with Performance as the heft of the 4WD system reduces the overall Performance. The 4Motion AWD drastically improves performance on wet road conditions or on roads "not taken". The Ride is comfortable courtesy of a good suspension tuning from Volkswagen while the road noise and exterior noise are very well contained. There is a little amount of body roll when the Tiguan is made to tackle corners fast but this is a feature, exhibited by other SUVs of the segment as well.

As with the case of any Turbocharged Motor in the World, the Volkswagen Tiguan isn't the fastest to take off the line. This is because of 2 simple reasons. Firstly, the Turbocharger unit starts providing its Boost once the Motor revs past 1600 RPM before which, it offers a lot of Turbo Lag. Secondly, the Tiguan's weight doesn't make the SUV feel agile or eager to respond to any throttle inputs as quickly as one would expect from an SUV of this class.

In comparison, while the Tiguan 2020 is the most affordable one of the lot, it lacks the performance offered by its rivals in spite of a strong engine. The Mazda CX-5 is the quickest and the sportiest handling SUV of the segment. It also leads in the towing capacity front. The CR-V offers similar performance as the VW but the Honda is more comfortable of the two. The Nissan Rogue on the other hand is the least impressive one with its underwhelming engine and transmission under its hood.

Fuel Economy
7.0/10

"The 2020 Tiguan with front-wheel drive earns an EPA-estimated 22 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway." - Cars.USnews

While the 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan offers Class-Leading Torque and Power, the downside is that all this performance comes at the price of gas MPG. The thirsty engine and the hefty weight of the Tiguan can be held responsible for the poor fuel economy figures. The low fuel tank capacity doesn't help Tiguan's cause.

The Nissan Rogue offers one of the best fuel economies in the segment but it compromises overall performance. The CR-V on the other hand is the most efficient and has a great range to offer. The Mazda CX-5 is the sportier of the lot and returns much higher fuel economy figures than the Tiguan.

Interior
8.0/10

"The Tiguan's interior is classically Volkswagen, which is to say that it is simple and functional but not particularly stylish or rich" - Caranddriver

The Cabin inside the Volkswagen Tiguan has to rank among the best in class in terms of build quality. All buttons have been properly placed and there are no inconsistencies in design or panel gaps. The Volkswagen Tiguan, despite its seemingly compact-looking dimensions, offers a good amount of space inside for passengers. As expected from an SUV of this category, Volkswagen has bundled the 2020 Tiguan with a host of Interior Features.

There is a good amount of legroom and shoulder room while the headroom will be adequate for most passengers except the taller ones. The second row in the Tiguan is particularly suited for Long Rides as the space offered is immense to stretch your legs or relax your muscles. The 2020 Tiguan offers 12 cu-ft of cargo storage space with its 3rd Row up and 37.6 cu-ft. in its 5-seater avatar. In terms of in-cabin storage space, there are plenty of bottle holders and cubby holes inside the Tiguan's cabin.

The seats in the Volkswagen Tiguan offer good bolstering and support while providing adequate cushioning. The Seats have been cushioned in ways such that the body doesn't feel tired or sore after long hours of sitting inside the same. The 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan comes with a plethora of features, to keep you entertained on your long weekend drives or office commutes.

The Infotainment System screen comes in two sizes namely a 6.5-inch and an 8-inch unit depending on the trim you choose. The Unit is extremely simple to use, gives good feedback to user inputs, and offers a Lag-Free experience. This is the list of Features available from the infotainment system of the 2020 Tiguan

Exterior
8.0/10

It may not be the boldest compact crossover SUV, but the 2020 Tiguan has clean, simple lines that will age well -TheCarConnection

The exterior design of the 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan SUV won't win any fashion contests or style awards. That being said, the Tiguan does look Handsome from all angles with its precise lines and well-put-together body. There are no panel gaps and Inconsistencies in the design of the exterior and the Tiguan has to be one of the best build SUVs in the segment. The 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan on sale in the US today has a good road presence courtesy of its long wheelbase dimensions.

The SUV doesn't look compact from any dimension and this translates into good interior space for the passengers and the Cargo Area. The 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan has a good set of Exterior Features which is in line with the other Volkswagens present in the US. The R-Line Trim and the other trims of the Tiguan have small exterior differences between them.

Safety
9.0/10

"The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave the Volkswagen Tiguan the highest rating of Good in all crash safety tests and a Top Safety Pick designation." - Cars.USNews

The Tiguan has been one of the Safest SUVs in the segment. For the 2020 iteration as well, VW is leaving no stones unturned in offering all the Safety Features that are being offered in the other SUVs of the Segment. The NHTSA has graded the 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan only for its side crash and rollover safety, in both these aspects its scores are well.

While it gets a perfect 5-star rating on the former it scores only a four-star rating in the latter. As per the gradings of IIHS, the 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan scores a "poor" grade for its headlights and average for the Latch: ease of use. In all the other aspects it gets the best grade possible, "Good".

Safety Features of the 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan

  • ABS with ESC and Anti Slip Regulation
  • Electronic Differential Locking and Engine Brake Assist

2020 Volkswagen Tiguan vs 2020 Honda CR-V

There is no denying the fact that the Honda CR-V is one of the Best SUVs in the segment. It flaunts an easy-to-understand infotainment system and best-in-class storage space. The CR-V additionally has a rich lodge that offers two lines of seating and has enough space to oblige grown-ups. The Tiguan however, is big on power and the 4Motion AWD makes it, a better proposition on the road less taken.

2020 Honda CR-V

2020 Volkswagen Tiguan vs 2020 Mazda CX-5

The Mazda CX-5 is one of the Sportiest SUVs in the segment. The Mazda offers one of the Best 2nd Row Seating arrangements in the class as well. When it comes to the off-road ability, both the SUVs are nearly matched and have potent 4WD systems. The Volkswagen Tiguan scores high on the Infotainment System it has on offer and offers the added ability to carry 7 people on board.

2020 Mazda CX-5

2020 Volkswagen Tiguan vs 2020 Nissan Rogue

The 2020 Rogue is not only more expensive than the Tiguan, it also lacks in terms of performance. That said, the Nissan is far more frugal and has more interior and cargo space to offer, thanks to its additional length. It is also more reliable in the long run, but VW offers complimentary maintenance. With plenty of safety and technology also on offer, the Rogue would be our preferred choice.

2020 Nissan Rogue

Final Verdict

With The 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan, Volkswagen has tried to present customers with an SUV, which has the potential to do it all. The Tiguan offers probably the best build quality both in the Interiors and exteriors which will probably last longer than Most SUV's in this comparison "Combined". Hence, if fuel economy isn't your top priority and power, practicality and function are important to you more than anything else, the Volkswagen Tiguan is an SUV that should be on your bucket list as an option that you should probably go for.
