Expert Review

CARHP Editorial May 31, 2019

Volvo is known to make one of the safest cars in the world. The S60 hybrid combines that safety with a good amount of luxury, good gas mileage and respectable performance.

The 2019 S60 hybrid is powered by a 2 liter twin charged inline 4 cylinder engine that is accompanied by an electric motor. The Gas engine along with the electric motor pumps out 400hp which is impressive in this category.

The main rivals for this car are the Audi A6 Hybrid, Acura RLX Hybrid and the BMW 530e Hybrid, all of which offer good comfort and gas mileage.

2019 Volvo S60 plug-in hybrid Sedan Features

The 2019 Volvo S60 Hybrid is offered in two trim levels - Inscription and R-Design. Both trims come with the same 2 liter engine mated to an 8 speed automatic gearbox. There are some very minute difference between the two trims. But, both the trims offer good features and tech as standard. The Inscription model offers some extras such as Nappa leather and a cooled storage compartment.

Recommendation

There's not a lot to differentiate the two trims. Just for a $1,000 extra, the Inscription trim offers quite a few premium features over the R-Design so that is the trim to go for.

2019 Volvo S60 plug-in hybrid Sedan Engine

Heroic turbo-4 performance finds a great groove in the 2019 Volvo S60. -The Car Connection

Engine and Transmission

The 2019 S60 Hybrid is powered by a 2 Liter inline 4 cylinder supercharged and turbo charged engine accompanied by a 10.4 khW battery powering a rear mounted electric motor. The twin charged engine in sync with the hybrid powertrain can produce 400hp and 472lb-ft of torque.

The 8 speed automatic transmission also makes sure of smooth and quick gear shifts. The inline 4 is also capable of delivering a smooth and comfortable ride for the highway.

The Volvo produces more power and torque when compared to it's direct rivals. The BMW produces the least power out of the bunch with only 248hp. Even in terms of torque, the Volvo has the highest amount of torque and the BMW has the lowest, but it is offered at just 1450 RPM.

Acceleration

Acceleration is quite powerful considering the size of the car. The twin charged (super charger + turbo charger ) engine means that acceleration is instant as the supercharger contains the turbo lag at low RPMs.

The S60 hybrid is quickest off the line to 60MPH, at par with the Audi A6. Again, the BMW is slowest to 60MPH at 6.5 seconds. The can also be contributed to the fact that the Volvo is the lightest in the group.

Braking

The brakes feel solid. Combined with the 19 inch tires, the brakes offer great stopping power. The brakes also feel good for everyday commuting.

When compared to rivals, the Volvo provides better braking performance and better brake feel. The light weight of the Volvo can be credited for this braking performance.

Ride and Handling

The all wheel drive system in the Volvo makes sure of a good handling experience and the optional sport suspension limits the body roll. But the sport suspensions also results in a harsh ride whereas, the standard suspensions offers a good comfortable ride.

The steering also feel direct and provides good feedback. The car has been tuned well enough to tackle corners with ease.

2019 Volvo S60 plug-in hybrid Sedan Fuel Economy

The Volvo hybrid offers very good gas mileage, one of the best in the class. The inline 4 cylinder can offer a comfortable smooth ride without hurting your pocket too much. It is the highway cruising where the Volvo actually excels with 34 miles to the gallon.

The Volvo offers better fuel economy when compared to rivals - probably the best in class. With a combined gas mileage of 30 miles to the gallon, that is the best one can expect considering the level of comfort that the car offers. Acura RLX Hybrid offers a slightly better fuel economy for city running but the Volvo hits it out of the park with it's highway MPG.

2019 Volvo S60 plug-in hybrid Sedan Interior

Volvo stitches, folds, snaps, and sews the S60's interior with great attention to detail. Synthetic leather and cloth seats make a fine substitute for the no-cost leather upholstery option, and the stock gray plastic trim's nicely finished. Volvo's vertically grained wood is handsome, but the S60 cabin dazzles when it's paneled with driftwood trim and finished with a black cloth headliner. - The Car Connection

Seating and Comfort

The Swedish car offers an amazing driving position with plenty of adjustments. Front seats offer good amount of support and leg room. The rear seats offer good leg room but the headroom can be an issue for the rear seat passengers mainly due to the sloping roof line. The rear seats don't feel as roomy as some other mid sized luxury sedans.

All the cars in this competition can seat up to 5 passengers. The Acura offers maximum overall room for the front passengers. The Japanese Acura also offers the most rear seat leg room but the Audi offers better headroom for the rear seat passengers.

The Volvo offers the least amount of space when it comes to passenger room.

  • Android Auto
  • Bluetooth
  • Two USB Ports
  • 10 Speaker Stereo
  • Satellite Radio
  • Climate Control
  • Panoramic Moonroof
  • Auto Dimming Rearview mirror

Infotainment

The S60 comes with the latest generation of the Sensus infotainment system, which is faster than ever before. It responds instantly to the user's touch. The tab styled display also helps to reduce the number of buttons on the dashboard and makes the interior look less cluttered.

With the ever increasing number of functions performed by infotainment system, they are getting more and more complicated and difficult to use. Volvo's Sensus is no exception and it takes some time getting used to it and mastering it.

Cargo space

The S60 Hybrid comes with a nice and wide trunk but it is not high enough. The trunk floor is too high, probably because of the hybrid battery system. The trunk also comes with handy hooks to hang grocery bags.

The Volvo lack behind in terms of trunk space. Other competitors offer better and more practical trunks. The one good thing about the Volvo's trunk is that the hinges are hidden so, they don't damage the luggage.

2019 Volvo S60 plug-in hybrid Sedan Exterior

It's borrowed a look from the large S90 sedan, but the S60 is anything but a hand-me-down. - The Car Connection

When it comes to weight, the Volvo is the lightest of the group. Even in terms of exterior dimensions, the Volvo is the smallest but offers more ground clearance which adds to the everyday practicality of the car.

  • Driver airbag

2019 Volvo S60 plug-in hybrid Sedan Competition

2019 Volvo S60 Hybrid Vs 2019 Audi A6 Premium Hybrid

Both the Volvo and it's German rival are solidly built, well composed cars. The Audi lags behind in terms of gas mileage where the Volvo simply excels. What the Audi is good at is rear seat comfort and room. The Audi comes with a bigger engine but the acceleration is at par. Audi provides better technology with it's MMI infotainment system and Virtual Cockpit digital drivers display when compared to Vovlo's Sensus system. Audi also offers more trunk space for added practicality. The Volvo is more pocket friendly but lags behind in some key practicality aspects.

2019 Volvo S60 Hybrid Vs 2019 Acura RLX Hybrid

The 2019 Acura is the costliest of the bunch but it doesn't feel the part. The interior looks dated and it also lags behind in terms of technology. Volvo offers a better ride quality and driving feel. The S60 also returns more miles to the gallon when compared to the Acura. Where the Volvo is beaten again is the trunk space and rear seat room. But overall, the Volvo is a better package.

2019 Volvo S60 Hybrid Vs 2019 BMW 530e Hybrid

The BMW is the cheapest of the group here. It has the same inline 4 cylinder engine as the Volvo but produces much less power. The BMW also provides more rear seat room and cargo space than the Vovo. It also has a slightly better ground clearance than the Volvo for more easy everyday driving. The interior feels premium and the car offers some advanced technology with it's iDrive system,.

2019 Volvo S60 plug-in hybrid Sedan Final Verdict

The 2019 Volvo S60 Hybrid is a good car and it provides a lot of features as standard. In terms of safety features and equipment, Volvo sets the standard. The interior feels rich and premium. The Sensus infotainment system is also good. But, for $4000 extra, the Audi A6 Premium is a better package. The Audi comes with an amazing infotainment system which is at par with the best in class. Even the Virtual Cockpit drivers display is of top quality. All the screens in the Audi feel brighter, sharper and crisper than the Volvo. The biggest drawback of the Volvo is the trunk capacity and the rear seat room, it loses a lot of points in that aspect. The Audi also feel more stately and is more refined. In this segment, the Audi A6 Premium Hybrid is the car to go for.
