Expert Review, Pricing Analysis and Buying Guide

The S60 Recharge is offered in three usual variants which are the R-Design Expression, R-Design, and Inscription while Volvo also offers a Polestar Engineered top-end trim with a bit more power, stiffer suspension, and stronger brakes. The S60 Recharge models are offered in an AWD configuration with only one powertrain combination and the pricing starts at around $48,685 and climbs up to more than $66,095 for the top-end trim. There are no straight PHEV competitors against the S60 Recharge, so we are pitting it against other luxury hybrids in the segment including the BMW 330e xDrive, Mercedes-Benz E 450 4Matic, and the Lexus ES 300h.

2022 Volvo S60 Recharge Sedan Features

The 2022 Volvo S60 Recharge is available in four different trim options with the same powertrain under the hood. All models come with the same 2.0 L Inline-4 engine and an 87 hp electric motor mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission powering all four wheels. The top-end Polestar Engineered trim outputs 15 hp more than the lower-end trims and comes with a Polestar Engineered Öhlins chassis and Brembo brakes for better performance.

Volvo offers some packages with the R-Design and Inscription trims of the S60 which include the Exterior Styling Kit worth $1,615 that adds some exterior styling elements including body-colored inserts, front and rear side deflectors, sculpted side moldings, and integrated dual split end pipes in stainless steel with a protruding four-pipe. Another available package option is the Climate Package that would set you back by $750 and adds heating functionality for the steering wheel, rear seats, and wiper blades in the front and rear. The following table shows the most important features of each trim of the 2022 Volvo S60 Recharge and their prices-

We Recommend

The R-Design would be the ideal choice as it offers some important features over the base trim and comes at a great price and looks impressive. The Inscription trim, however, is also a great option as it offers a bit more luxury and an overall more plush-looking interior. Both these models have the same price so you can choose one according to your likes. But, regardless of which one you choose, both these machines are impressively great ones and offer great bang for the buck.

2022 Volvo S60 Recharge PHEV Release Date

We have no official information about the release of the 2022 Volvo S60 but it is expected to debut by the beginning of 2022.

2022 Volvo S60 Recharge Sedan Engine and Performance

The powertrain under the hood of the 2022 Volvo S60 Recharge is a Direct Injected Turbo & Supercharged Inline-4 engine coupled with an 87 hp electric motor. This setup produces a combined output of 400 hp and 472 lb-ft of maximum power and torque in the R-Design and Inscription models while the Polestar Engineered trim gets an extra 15 hp of power along with some performance enhancements. The base, luxury models of the S60 Recharge aimed at comfort and efficiency offers an impressive ride quality and impressive comfort while the power delivery is also a notch above the competition. The S60 Recharge takes only 4.3 seconds to reach 60mph and crosses the quarter-mile mark in 13.1 seconds while the Polestar Engineered trim takes 0.1 seconds to achieve the same feat at 4.2 and 13.0 seconds respectively.

Handling is also one of the strong points of the S60 Recharge and it tackles corners impressively while maintaining stability and grip. The Polestar Engineered trim, however, provides a stiffer ride which does improve the driving experience while the ride quality is affected. This is due to the Polestar Engineered Öhlins Chassis which is constructed and calibrated for better agility and control working along with advanced Öhlins shock absorbers with Polestar Engineered front and rear springs to deliver better grip and cornering stability on the road. The braking performance of the S60 Recharge is also impressive but the Polestar Engineered trim improves that also by incorporating Brembo brakes with 6-piston brake calipers in the front. Overall it is an impressively performing luxury sedan that offers a lot of bang for the buck.

The 2022 Volvo S60 Recharge is the most powerful machine here but the less powerful Mercedes E 450 4Matic holds up very well with the Volvo while others are much behind these two. However, considering the fact that the Mercedes is much more expensive than the base variant of the S60 Recharge, that makes this Volvo is the best performing one considering the price and performance. The BMW and Mercedes are better handlings than the S60 Recharge, but the Volvo is also an engaging machine to drive. The Lexus is the underpowered and disappointing performer here and doesn’t match the others.

2022 Volvo S60 Recharge Sedan Fuel Economy

The 2022 Volvo S60 Recharge being a PHEV offers impressive fuel efficiency figures. It comes with a Start/Stop function to improve the fuel economy even more. The S60 Recharge provides a standalone combined gas range of around 30mpg and an electric+gas combined mileage of up to 69 mpge which is evidently very much impressive. This one being a PHEV offers an all-electric range of up to 22 miles and a gas-only combined range of around 477 miles which is impressive and this could go upwards significantly if you keep the pedal down and drive this one around in the Pure mode in the city environments as well as for short commutes. Overall this PHEV is an impressively efficient vehicle offering enough power and more than enough efficiency from the battery pack as well as the combined hybrid powertrain. Volvo provides a Level 2 charging cable with TurboCord Dual voltage plugin design rated at 120/240 V and is 22.9 ft long for quick charging from any home plug point.

The Volvo can’t be beaten in terms of outright fuel efficiency as a PHEV, as it puts out a real-world efficiency that is well above 60mpg. But we have taken the gas efficiency figure which is a combined efficiency of around 30mpg. And as a hybrid, the Lexus puts out the most efficiency followed by the Volvo. However, it is still no match to the S60 Recahrge’s impressive fuel economy in Pure mode or its super-high combined range and the all-electric range advantage it has over all the competitors. This means that this Volvo truly dominated the others in the similar price point not just in terms of performance but also with astounding levels of fuel efficiency.

2022 Volvo S60 Recharge Sedan Interior

The inside of the S60 Recharge is a cozy and comfortable place to be inside. It comes with a high-quality interior made up of premium materials. The car features a leather-clad sport steering wheel with a Uni-deco trim in charcoal. The base R-Design Expression trim gets a leather-clad gearshift knob in Charcoal while the R-Design and Inscription trims get Crystal Geartronic gear shifter by Orrefors which looks super cool and the Polestar Engineered trim gets an R-Design leather-clad gearshift knob. The interior and dashboard look impressive and everything is laid out pretty nicely, except for the old-looking infotainment screen which is a bummer.

The interior of the S60 Recharge is roomy and there is an adequate amount of space in both rows. The front seats are power-adjustable with memory settings and they provide enough comfort and support while the rear row seats are also comfortable and won’t tire you during long journeys. The base trim gets leatherette upholstery which gets upgraded to leather in the higher trims while the top-end Polestar Engineered trim gets Nappa leather-covered seats which look and feel amazing. The cargo capacity is on the lower side at 11.6 but that is expected from a PHEV. Overall the S60 Recharge has a nice-looking interior which does match up to the German rivals.

Rear Row (Headroom/Shoulder Room/Leg Room, in inches)

Trunk Capacity (cubic feet)

The Volvo has a super quality premium-looking luxurious interior and so do the competitors except for the Lexus which comes with some disappointing low-quality interior elements. The interior however is the most spacious inside the Lexus. The Volvo looks the most outdated inside while the BMW has the most modern and updated-looking interior. But, the standout factor is that the Mercedes comes with the most elegant and luxurious interior which is absolutely gracious and a feast to look at while it also feels amazing to be inside. The following are the most important interior features inside the 2022 Volvo S60 Recharge-

  • Two-zone climate system
  • CleanZone with Air Quality with advanced air cleaner PM 2.5
  • Power-operated driver's seat with memory function
  • Heated seats
  • Front Seats 4-Way Power Lumbar
  • Contour front seats
  • Heated steering wheel
  • Sport pedals

How intuitive is the car’s infotainment unit?

The 2022 Volvo S60 Recharge comes with a 9-inch touchscreen infotainment unit which is outdated and looks like it’s from a last-generation car of some other luxury brands. The infotainment unit is frustrating and not at all intuitive compared to the competition. The standard audio system is a 10-speaker high-performance unit with separate tweeters, woofers, and mid-range speakers outputting 220 W operated via steering wheel buttons, the center display with touchscreen, or voice control. This gets upgraded to a 14-speaker Harman Kardon premium audio system inside the R-Design trim. This unit consists of 14 hi-fi speakers including an air-ventilated subwoofer and is developed in collaboration with the hi-fi specialists at Harman Kardon. It also gets a 600 W digital amplifier and Dirac Unison tuning.

However, the best provided in the S60 Recharge is in the Polestar Engineered trim which is a 15-speaker Bowers & Wilkins premium sound system which is one of the best in the market right now. It consists of a 4:15 digital amplifier, an astonishing 1100 W output, and 15 separate high-end speakers including a tweeter-on-top center speaker. The Double-Dome aluminum tweeters and the new generation mid-range speaker cones in “Continuum” composite, along with Four room modes, allows recreating the acoustics of a specific room inside this Volvo. And most of the speaker panels are made of stainless steel which ensures high quality. The following are some of the most important infotainment features inside the 2022 Volvo S60 Recharge-

  • 12-inch instrument panel
  • A 9-inch touchscreen infotainment unit
  • SiriusXM
  • Sensus Navigation
  • Smartphone integration
  • Bluetooth Connectivity

2022 Volvo S60 Recharge Sedan Exterior

The Volvo S60 Recharge is an amazingly beautiful and so much executive-looking sedan. The S60 looks like it is meant for a businessperson. The R-Design trims feature an R-Design grille with a high-gloss black insert and Silk metal frame while the Inscription trim gets a chrome frame and the top-end trim gets a Polestar Engineered front grille with a horizontal mesh. These are basically the same thing but with subtle differences. The standard color choice is limited for the S60 Recharge which consists of just a single solid color that is Black Stone while there are six metallic color choices and one or two exclusive shades available for each trim.

The wheels are 18-inch 5-double spoke matte black diamond-cut alloy wheels in the base R-Design trims while the Inscription trim 10-multi spoke alloys of the same size. The Polestar Engineered trim features larger 19-inch 5-Y-spoke black polished forged alloys along with a Polestar Engineered stainless steel exhaust with a black chrome finish. The S60 flaunts its simplicity all around itself with subtle styling and sharp lines contributing to a sleek and stylish design language. There is no area on the outside of the S60 that looks bizarre or disappointing.

All of these machines are extremely beautiful, and that is a fact. The Mercedes-Benz and the Lexus are the more luxurious options here while the BMW is the sporty and Volvo is the executive one. That is how it is and all these machines are a feast to look at. The Volvo with the strongest engine and PHEV setup is the heaviest one while the Lexus is the lightest. However, even while being the lightest the Lexus is the widest and longest sedan here. The Volvo and BMW offer the most ground clearance while the Merc offers the least. The following are some of the prominent exterior features of the 2022 Volvo S60 Recharge-

  • R-Design/Inscription/Polestar Engineered front grille
  • Dual integrated tailpipes
  • 19" 5-Y Spoke Black Polished Forged Alloy Wheels Polestar Engineered
  • Laminated Panoramic Moonroof with Power Sunshade
  • High-gloss black side window trim

2022 Volvo S60 Recharge Sedan Safety

This car is made by a brand, so renowned for safety that even without referring to the safety features or ratings we could just declare that this one is an extremely safe machine. The 2022 S60 models had not been tested or rated yet but the 2021 Volvo S60 Recharge was selected as one of the Top Safety Pick+ vehicles in the segment which further ensures this. It gets a rating of ‘Good’ under all parameters it has been tested. The following are some of the main safety and driver assistance features in the 2022 Volvo S60 Recharge-

  • SIPS Side Impact Protection System
  • Inflatable Curtain
  • Oncoming Lane Mitigation
  • Road Sign Information
  • Lane Keeping Aid
  • BLIS blind spot information with Steer Assist and Cross Traffic Alert with auto-brake
  • Brakes with Hill Start Assist and Automatic Hold

2022 Volvo S60 Recharge Sedan Competition

2022 Volvo S60 Recharge PHEV vs 2022 BMW 330e xDrive

Well, the BMW 330e xDrive does offer better handling compared to the Volvo along with a much better infotainment unit and interface. But that’s where it ends, the Volvo is more powerful, more luxurious, and comes with much better fuel efficiency figures and range. All of these evidently means that Volvo is the clear winner while comparing these two.

2022 Volvo S60 Recharge PHEV vs 2021 Mercedes-Benz E 450 4Matic

The 2021 Mercedes-Benz E 450 4Matic is much more expensive compared to the lower three trims of the Volvo. The Mercedes does look a bit better through my eyes from the outside and it definitely has a better-looking interior. But the Volvo also has its strong points which are, more power, efficiency, and range. And to top that off it is priced much aggressively compared to the Mercedes and that makes it the better choice, but however, if you are looking for a more engaging machine and you don’t want the extra range and efficiency from the PHEV, only then go for the Mercedes as it is a superb machine.

2022 Volvo S60 Recharge PHEV vs 2022 Lexus ES 300h Luxury

The Lexus ES 300h is a spacious machine with great efficiency figures. But these positives are not enough to compensate for the underpowered powertrain and sluggish acceleration. The interior is also not as plush or luxurious as what the Volvo provides for a very similar price. It is just very clear that one should not opt for the Lexus over the S60 Recharge as it is a far inferior option.

2022 Volvo S60 Recharge Sedan Final Verdict

The new Volvo S60 Recharge is an impressive machine offered at a great price. It’s got a very powerful machine that is agile and fun to drive around. It’s got a quality interior with supportive and comfortable seats coupled with a great-looking exterior and the added functionality and efficiency from the PHEV powertrain. The only main con would be the disappointing infotainment screen and interface. Keeping that aside, this is an amazing machine offered at great price points in a variety of trim options.
