Volvo is quite an old and well-accepted name in the world of automobiles especially when it comes to safe vehicles. The brand rose to fame by practically pioneering the modern seatbelt and building vehicles with the tank-like build quality. Among those solidly built vehicles, the 900 Series sedan, and Estate were most popular and before being discontinued back in 1998, the Swedish brand renamed the sedan to Volvo S90 and the Estate to V90. After a long gap of 18 years, the brand decided to resurrect the popular sedan and estate duo along with their original names as well.

Expert Review, Pricing Analysis and Buying Guide

For the 2022 model year, the Volvo S90 Recharge will be a carry-forward model since it received some minor styling tweaks for the current model year. Some minor updates will include an upgraded safety software. The sedan is built on Volvo’s SPA platform that debuted with the new XC90 in 2014 and boasts a superior build quality as compared to some of the segment rivals. The price of the sedan starts at $65,430 and is offered with two packages or “trims” as per the brand. The car competes against the BMW 530e PHEV and the Audi A6 Hybrid.

The 2022 Volvo S90 Recharge will come with some minor changes which do not include any feature or trim updates or changes. Hence, the upcoming model will also be available in two trim levels which are R-Design and Inscription. Right from the base trim, the sedan comes in a well-equipped state and since the Recharge powertrain is available only with the R-Design and the Inscription, the deal becomes sweeter.

Some of the standard features include adaptive LED Headlights, a fully digital instrument panel, wireless charging pad, panoramic sunroof, a leather-wrapped sport steering wheel, quad-zone automatic climate control, and premium quality leather upholstery among other features. Since Volvo represents the Gold Standard when it comes to safety the car comes with a handsome number of handsome safety techs such as Collision mitigation, Oncoming lane mitigation, Road sign information, Adaptive cruise control, and Blind-spot monitor.

Two optional packages further increase the count of features which are the Advanced package and the Climate package. The first one adds a power trunk lid, a 360-degree parking camera system, and an upgraded interior ambient lighting system. The second package adds a heating function for the steering wheel, rear seats, and wiper blades. Three standalone features include an upgraded Bowers & Wilkins audio system, an automated parking system, and adaptive air suspension. The top-end Inscription trim also gets an exclusive Lounge package which includes a massaging function for the front seats and ventilation for the rear seats.

2022 Volvo S90 Recharge Release Date

Even though no official announcements have been made from the brand, we expect the sedan will be available at the dealerships by fall 2021.

Engine and Performance

Volvo utilizes a unique powertrain set up with some of its vehicles to optimize performance and fuel economy with a compact motor. The setup includes two types of induction systems to work in tandem are both turbocharging and supercharging. The supercharger supplies with the initial power boost while the turbocharger helps to maintain a steady performance at higher speeds.

2022 Volvo S90 Recharge Sedan In Acceleration Mode

Since the 2022 S90 Recharge will remain unchanged, the twin-charged 2.0-liter motor paired with a couple of Permanent Magnet Synchronous AC Motors fitted both at the front and the rear axles. Together, the powerplant generates a maximum of 400 horsepower and 472 lb-ft of maximum torque. The car also gets a pure EV mode with a range of 28 miles. The overall performance is decent and being a hybrid vehicle, don’t expect a sporty character from the sedan but city runs along with triple-digit highway cruising feels effortless.

The motor does get coarse under harsh acceleration but driving it in a relaxed manner brings out the best from the car. The motor is paired to an 8-speed Aisin TG-81SC automatic transmission that offers precise and quick shifts. The power is delivered to all the wheels and both the front and rear axles benefit from their independent electric motors. The 0-60mph sprint time is rather quick at 5.4 seconds while the standing quarter-mile comes up at 12.2 seconds flat.

Among the rivals here, the Audi A6 comes with the biggest powertrain, a 3.0-liter turbocharged V6 paired with an electric motor. The A6 comes with Audi’s exceptionally good Quattro system which provides excellent grip over almost all tarmac conditions. Even though it makes lower power and torque than the S90, its performance levels are almost equal to the latter with some marginal differences.

Also, the A6 drives better and has overall better refinement levels from the motor as well. The BMW 530e PHEV is the closest competitor to the S90 Recharge and has an identical powertrain to the latter in terms of displacement. The Beemer also offers a better driving experience with athletic handling but being a hybrid vehicle, straight-line performance might not satisfy the enthusiasts. It also gets an AWD layout for excellent grip. Both competitors are similar in performance and are almost only diminutively slower taking just over 5.5 seconds.

Fuel Economy

Hybrid vehicles are meant to be fuel efficient while PHEVs are designed to perform even better. But that is not the case when it comes to luxury sedans fitted with such techs. The Volvo S90 Recharge offers a maximum of 30mpg within urban limits while out on the highways, the number rises slightly to 32mpg. The combined mileage is rated at 29mpg. The vehicle also gets 28miles of pure EV range which might come in handy within the city limits only. The impressive part about the S90 is its sizable 15.9-gallon gas tank which offers impressive driving range numbers.

The A6 disappoints with its fuel economy owing to its big powertrain. Despite getting a hybrid system, the sedan fails to deliver some decent fuel economy numbers one would expect from a hybrid sedan and averages a combined efficiency of 24 MPG. Its biggest savior point is its big 19.3-gallon gas tank which offers some decent driving figures. The BMW 530e gets a similar powertrain to the Volvo S90 Recharge but offers much lower fuel economy figures than the latter. Moreover, it also gets a puny little gas tank measuring at 12.1-gallon which results in some terrible driving range of a mere 254 miles of city driving and 375 miles of highway driving.

The 2022 Volvo S90 Recharge will come with the same interior as the existing model hence the design and features will remain the same as well. The S90 comes with one of the finest and classiest interior designs in the segment. The design is simple and minimalistic without any sharp styling cues yet it oozes elegance with a premium touch everywhere. The dashboard design looks quite practical and smooth with vertical air-con vents adorning the centrally-mounted infotainment screen.

Most of the controls are on-screen while the center stack houses a few buttons and knobs with metallic trims and inserts to offer a premium feel. The ambient interior lighting makes everything even more soothing especially at night and the wooden interior trim of the Inscription model enhances the overall feeling of the cabin. The front seats are one of the comfiest in the segment with power-adjustable side supports and lumbar support.

2022 Volvo S90 Recharge Sedan Seats

The Inscription also offers ventilated and perforated front seats which can be combined with a massaging function to take the comfort level to a next level. The rear seats are also extremely comfortable with adequate space and an excellent recline angle. The top-end trim also offers a heating function for the rear seats which can be combined with ventilation offered with the Lounge package exclusive to the Inscription model. There are smart storage spaces inside the cabin but there could’ve been more for added practicality. The trunk space is decent at 13.5 cu-ft.

The Audi A6 sports a way more modern and stylish cabin as compared to the Volvo S90 sedan. The overall design might look complex at a glance but at a second look, you’ll realize there are almost no physical buttons on the center stack and the dashboard. Instead, the sedan gets two huge screens placed vertically. The upper one is the infotainment screen while the lower one shows all the controls for the climate controls and seat adjustment controls along with other miscellaneous controls as well.

2022 Volvo S90 Recharge Sedan Infotainment Screen

There is an abundance of leather and wood trim throughout the cabin and the exposed surfaces are made of soft-touch plastics. The comfort levels are excellent too and at par with the S90 as well. The cargo capacity is decent too at 13.7 cu-ft. The BMW 530e interior gets that busy and complex design language that was familiar with big German luxury sedans. The dashboard design is driver-oriented with the infotainment screen and the controls aligned towards the driver’s seat.

The controls are divided into two parts within the dashboard while the center console gets the gear selector stick and the control dial with trackpad for the infotainment system along with other controls placed along with the console. Most of the buttons are feather-touch ones and get backlit for dark environments. The front seats offer excellent support and electronic adjustments along with heating and ventilation functions as well. To indicate the PHEV model, the cabin gets a cool blue theme running along with the dashboard and the door panels. The trunk space is somewhat disappointing at a mere 10 cu-ft. Some interior features are:

  • Premium leather upholstery
  • Quad-zone automatic climate control
  • Power-operated window curtains
  • Wood interior trim
  • Perforated and ventilated front seats
  • Power-adjustable side supports
  • Heated steering wheel(optional)
  • Massaging front seats and ventilated rear seats(optional)

How intuitive is the infotainment system?

The 2022 Volvo S90 Recharge will see no changes in the infotainment system as well. The existing system offers a 9-inch dashboard-mounted display running Volvo’s Sensus Connect interface. The interface is quite fluid and the graphics are crisp with a well-laid out menu. However, most of the controls are also bundled within the display which can make it slightly frustrating while trying to access a setting or control in a hurry. The system offers excellent features such as an in-built navigation system, a premium 13-speaker Harman Kardon audio system, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, HomeLink control, and Volvo On-Call system. Some standout infotainment features of the infotainment system are:

  • 9-inch touchscreen display with Sensus Connect interface
  • Harman Kardon Premium Sound System
  • Bluetooth
  • Sensus Navigation with RTTI
  • Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
  • HomeLink
  • Volvo On Call
  • SiriusXM radio with a 3-month complimentary subscription
  • Wireless Charging
  • 12.3-inch Digital Driver Display
  • Bowers & Wilkins audio system 1400 W output and 19 speakers(Optional)

The outgoing Volvo S90 Recharge sedan looks quite stylish and appealing, oozing a character you’d miss on the inside. For the current model year, the sedan received some styling tweaks and not wears one of the best designs in the segment. The sedan gets some tasteful chrome inserts and trims on the exterior especially on the front fascia. The front grille looks quite executive-like with the all-chrome finish and the front bumper has a sleek profile too.

 2022 Volvo S90 Recharge Sedan

The all-LED headlights with Thor’s Hammer LED Running light design looks truly unique and spectacular as opposed to the rivals in the segment. The hood gets a sculpted design and the side profile is neat with a chrome strip placed on both the doors and chrome lining around the windows. The rear end looks equally elegant with the LED C-shaped taillights the word Volvo written in bold and chrome lettering on the lip of the trunk lid.The sedan is longer than the rivals and has more wheelbase than its rivals too, translating into a spacious cabin.

Vehicles from Audi always stood out from the crowd owing to the big and unique grille design and the brand has evolved the design to a great extent. The Audi A6 now looks quite close to the bigger A8 sedan with a pronounced shoulder and long hood along with a big and aggressive front grille. The sharp-styled LED headlamp unit accentuates the big grille nicely. The Matrix LED lighting of the A6, available as an option, is unique and is one of the best in the segment.

The sedan has a shorter wheelbase than the S90 and is shorter than the latter as well. The BMW 530e will get some design changes for the 2022 model year but thankfully, the sedan will be spared from getting the ugly and huge kidney grille design that the brand has put into most of its vehicles. With the new design, the sedan will look more handsome than before and the unique LED headlights with LED running lights will look quite spectacular as well. Moreover, the all-black wheels give a special character to the sedan too. Some exterior features are:

  • Adaptive LED headlights with Thor’s Hammer DRL design
  • 19-inch diamond-cut wheels
  • High-gloss chrome front grille
  • Puddle lights
  • High-gloss black window trim
  • R-Design specific exterior styling trims

Safety and Volvo are quite synonymous with each other and the S90 sedan already offers a strong suite of safety features along with plenty of advanced safety techs as well. Even though the NHTSA didn’t test the 2021 S90 sedan the IIHS tested it and the sedan performed exceptionally well by bagging the prestigious “Top Safety Pick+” award from the organization as well.

The standard safety techs of the sedan include Adaptive cruise control, rain-sensing wipers with integrated washers, Road sign information, Oncoming lane mitigation, Lane departure mitigation, collision mitigation, and Blind-spot monitor. Moreover, the optional Advanced package adds a 360-degree parking camera system to further strengthen the safety aspect of the vehicle. Some of the standout safety features include:

  • Volvo On-Call Emergency Sos
  • Rear Parking Sensors
  • BLIS Blind Spot Sensor
  • City Safety and Cross Traffic Alert
  • Lane Keeping Aid/Run-Off-Road Mitigation Lane Keeping Assist
  • Curtain 1st And 2nd Row Airbags
  • Airbag Occupancy Sensor
  • Dstc/RSC Electronic Stability Control And Roll Stability Control
  • ABS And Driveline Traction Control

Volvo S90 Recharge vs Audi A6 Hybrid

The Audi A6 with its hybrid V6 powertrain comes quite close to the S90 Recharge but falls short in the fuel economy department. Apart from that, the A6 offers a more modern and stylish cabin with minimal buttons and plenty of wood and metal inserts. On the exterior too, the A6 beats the S90 in terms of overall design and sportiness. On the other hand, the S90 offers a subtle design language that pulls the right set of buyers only and stands out from the crowd with its unique grille and Thor’s Hammer DRL design. Both the sedans are almost evenly matched when it comes to comfort levels but the cabin space is more in the S90.

Audi A6 Hybrid

Volvo S90 Recharge vs BMW 530e PHEV

The BMW 530e PHEV with its plug-in hybrid powertrain tries to come close to the Volvo S90 in terms of technology but falls short when it comes to offering a perfect balance of performance and fuel efficiency which the S90 does seamlessly. The 530e gets an elegant design on the outside while on the inside, it’s a different story. The sedan gets a mainstream luxury sedan-like interior design with a busy center console but its driver-oriented layout is something you’d miss on the Volvo S90.

Volvo S90 Recharge vs Mercedes-Benz E450

The Mercedes-Benz E 450 gets a mild hybrid powertrain as compared to the S90 Recharge’s plug-in hybrid unit yet it manages to match up to the latter in the fuel economy department in the highway mileage front. Design-wise, the E450 gets an aggressive appearance owing to the brand’s new design language but it still remains unmatched to the S90’s sharp yet elegant exterior. Inside, the E450 gets a more complex and rich interior design which draws inspiration from the top-end S Class sedans. Overall, the E450 is a slightly cheaper alternative to the S90 and makes for a sensible buy as well.

Mercedes-Benz E450

Final Verdict

The Volvo S90 Recharge is a brilliant offering in the segment and is a strong and more sensible alternative to its mainstream German rivals. It offers a power-packed hybrid powertrain with a dedicated EV mode, excellent fuel economy for a big luxury sedan, one of the most comfortable seats in the segment, and a wide list of features along with a superior safety aspect as compared to its German counterparts. If you’re in the market looking for a PHEV sedan with an excellent set of features and superior safety, the 2022 Volvo S90 Recharge would be the best bet.
