The V60 isn't just any ordinary station wagon. The wagon comes from Swedish luxury automaker Volvo. This family wagon gets sci-fi movie like safety features and Volvo has a great reputation for making the safest cars in the industry. In fact, no other car in the market gets safety tech like the Volvo gets and hence this one is probably the safest car to carry your family and kids around.

"Volvo has streamlined its engine offerings using a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder for all V60 trims. But we'll say it again: These are phenomenal engines that punch above their weight. - Kelley Blue Book"

Engine and Transmission

The Volvo V60 uses a 2.0L 4-cylinder turbocharged engine which makes about 240 horsepower and delivers 258 lb-ft of torque. The power unit comes mated to a conventional torque converter 8-speed automatic transmission. All the power is sent to the front wheels but you can always avail the AWD variant.

Both the rivals of the Volvo, the BMW 330i xDrive and the Audi A4 all road Premium use a similar 2.0L 4-cylinder turbocharged engine. Yet, both the cars make more power than the Volvo V60. The BMW 330i xDrive makes 248 horses while the Audi A4 Premium makes 252 horses. The BMW delivers 258lb-ft of torque while the Audi delivers 273 lb-ft of torque.

Acceleration

You wouldn't really care about acceleration timings while buying a station wagon, yet we have them with us for you. Step on the gas of the Volvo V60 and the wagon will go from 0-60 MPH in about 7.3 seconds. Take it to the drag strip and the V60 will hit the quarter-mile mark in about 15.5 seconds.

The V60 isn't really a fast car and in fact is the slowest car of the lot. The BMW happens to be the fastest car of the lot with 0-60 MPH acceleration timing of 5.5 seconds and a quarter mile acceleration timings of 14.2 seconds. The Audi A4 Allroad Premium, on the other hand, is faster than Volvo but slower than the BMW and so has the quarter-mile acceleration timing of 14.3 seconds and does a 0-60 MPH in 5.9 seconds.

Ride and Handling

The steering of the V60 wagon is pretty responsive and gives ample amount of feedback. It just gives you the right amount of confidence to steer at high speeds. You simply cannot expect sports car-like driving experience from this car but the Volvo does offer great handling for a station wagon. Not the car you would take on narrow roads but the V60 certainly is a good highway hauler.

We must remember that the Volvo V60 isn't an ordinary wagon but it is a luxury station and so Volvo has offered great ride quality with this car. The suspensions are smartly tweaked and hence absorb every bump and pothole you meet. There is a certain amount of body roll but the nicely cushioned seats of the V60 do the job of holding you in place really well.

Braking

The V60 is a very big car and thus requires a good set of brakes to bring itself to rest. Volvo has done its job quite well and has equipped the V60 with 11.8 inches diameter discs at the front and 11.9 inches diameter discs at the rear. The V60 comes to a standstill from 60 MPH at a distance of 130 feet which is decent for a car of this size but not really the best.

2017 Volvo V60 Fuel Economy

Fuel economy would be on top of your mind while buying a family car and the Volvo doesn't disappoint you in this case. The V60 can go for 25 miles in the city on a gallon of fuel while it can go for 36 miles on the highway on a gallon of fuel. The V60 gets a combined fuel economy rating of 29 MPG.

2017 Volvo V60 Interior

8.5/10
"The 2017 Volvo V60 offers a stylish interior fitted with premium materials. The look is subtly classy and as appealing as that of any of its direct competitors. The cabin is quiet, with a serene atmosphere enhanced by the car's composed ride quality. - Edmunds"

The V60 wagon is the derivative of the S60 luxury sedan and thus many interior elements of the V60 have come straight from the S60 sedan. Hop on to the inside and actually doesn't feel like you are sitting in a station wagon. The car offers a sedan like an experience although it is a station wagon. The quality of the materials is really great and the materials used are upmarket.

Volvo has adopted an all-black theme for the interiors just to make the car feel more premium. The dashboard is neatly laid out with different buttons and switches and keys wrapped in leather and other high quality materials. The steering wheel is also wrapped in leather and has a sort of 'V' like aluminum element on it with a large Volvo logo sitting in the center of the steering wheel. The gear selector is also nice and stubby and comes crafted in leather and aluminum. All in all, an interior of the Volvo is a comforting place to be in.

Seating and Comfort

The V60 can accommodate 5 adult passengers. The space on the inside is ample, however, it isn't really the best in the competition. The V60 offers a total head/shoulder/leg room of 37.7/57.0/41.9 inches respectively on the front while on the rear you get a total head/shoulder/leg room of 37.6/55.2/33.5 inches respectively.

The BMW, in spite of being the smallest car of the lot in terms of exterior dimensions, offers the largest space on the inside. The BMW offers a head/shoulder/leg room of 40.4/55.1/42.1 inches on the front while on the rear it offers a head/shoulder/leg room of 38.3/55.1/35 inches.

Infotainment System

Volvo calls its infotainment system as the Sensus Connect infotainment system. This system offers you an integrated modem, WiFi hotspot, and a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system. The quality of the touch screen isn't all that really great and the screen lags quite a bit in spite of being pretty intuitive. The system desperately needs an update and is the biggest turn-off in the car.

We have no complaints about the sound quality of the car credit to the 12 speakers Harman Kardon high-quality audio system. The audio system functions really well and offers crisp sound quality. You also get AUX, USB and iPod inputs with the infotainment system.

Interior Features

Some of the goodies on the inside of the Volvo V60 are listed below:

  • Leather crafted steering wheel with silk metal inlay.
  • Dual zone electronic climate control with pollen filter.
  • 7-inch touch screen infotainment display.
  • High-quality leather seats.
  • Harman-Kardon 12 speaker audio system.

Cargo Capacity

The V60 offers a decent amount of luggage space and carrying large bags on long road trips wouldn't really be a problem with this car. With the second row of seats up, the Volvo offers a cargo volume of 28 cubic feet. Fold down the second row of seats and you open up to 43.8 cubic feet of luggage volume.

The Volvo has the best cargo volume on offer when the second row of seats is up. However, it loses to both its rivals once the second row of seats is down. The Audi offers cargo volume of 58.5 cubic feet while the BMW offers 53.0 cubic feet of cargo volume when the second row of seats are down.

"This may be the best-looking of Volvo's "60" series of cars, which includes the S60 sedan and XC60 SUV. The V60's profile is graceful and elegant, with a sloping roofline that extends the cargo area, but without making it look like a sedan wearing a backpack." - KBB

Dimensions and Weight

The V60 is evidently a large car and its proportionate dimensions give it an attractive shape and a solid stance. The V60 is 182 inches long, 73.4 inches wide and 58.4 inches tall. The wagon also gets a ground clearance of 54 inches and features a long wheelbase of 109.3 inches. The V60 weighs about 3670 lbs.

2017 Volvo V60 Safety

As stated earlier, Volvo is a brand known for building the safest cars in the business. In fact, safety features have become the unique selling point of all the Volvos these days and the V60 is no exception.

The Insurance Institute of Highway Safety rates the V60 as ‘Good' in most of its crash tests while the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration hasn't yet tested the V60.

2017 Volvo V60 Competition

BMW 330i xDrive vs Volvo V60

The BMW 330i xDrive is the German rival of the Volvo V60. The BMW 330i is also is the derivative of the 3-series luxury sedan of BMW. Both, the BMW and the Volvo use a similar 2-liter engine but the BMW makes 8 horses more than the Volvo. The BMW also features the better acceleration timings and also has the better braking stats. The BMW also has slightly spacious interiors.

On the flip side, the Volvo is $6000 cheaper than the BMW. The Volvo has the better fuel efficiency numbers and also gets the better cargo volume. Analyzing both the cars carefully, we can only say that the Volvo has a slight edge over the BMW. Although the BMW has the better performance stats, the Volvo scores big in terms of functionality and practicality. And so, the Volvo V60 is the better car of the two according to us.

Audi A4 Allroad Premium vs Volvo V60

The Audi A4 Allroad Premium is yet another German rival of the Volvo V60. Just like the V60, the A4 Allroad is also a derivative of Audi's A4 luxury sedan. Again, the Audi and the Volvo use similar 2-liter engine but the Audi makes 12 more horses than the Volvo. The Audi also boasts the better acceleration and braking stats. The Audi also offers more space on the inside.

On the contrary, the Volvo is about $8000 cheaper than the Audi. The Volvo also has the better fuel efficiency figures and also offers the better trunk storage capacity. Comparing both the cars closely, we would rather suggest that you buy the Volvo which is the more practical and safer car of the two.

2017 Volvo V60 Final Verdict

Sense over snob, substance over style is the philosophy that Volvo has followed while building the V60. The V60 ticks all the boxes right and does the job of being a family wagon really well. A long hauler, a kids carrier, a grocery getter, the V60 can do all the jobs with ease. Moreover, the V60 comes at a bargain price of $36150. The practicality of a wagon and the luxury of a sedan. That's what the Volvo V60 is.
