With no powertrain options to choose from, the 2022 V60 Cross Country is now offered only in a single trim guise with loads of other options packages available to choose from. As standard, it features many safety functions and creature comforts inside its already premium designed and solid built cabin. To add to that, the $1,9000 Advance Package adds adaptive LED lights with headlight washers, a head-up display, LED fog lights, a 360-degree camera, and adaptive cruise control. There is also a Lounge Package and a Polestar Package amongst other smaller packages to choose from that can better spec the V60.

As the base trim already has a lot of premium elements to it and the V60 Cross Country costs a bit on the higher side as well, it is best to not opt for any option packages and save some money instead. 

2022 Volvo V60 Cross Country Wagon Release Date

Volvo has already listed the 2022 V60 Cross Country on their website and is set to hit the showrooms very soon. Expect deliveries to begin by the fall of 2021.

The 2022 Volvo V60 Cross Country wagon gets only a single powertrain option in the US market which includes the 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that is paired up with an eight-speed automatic transmission that powers all four wheels as standard. The output is rated for 250 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. The performance is pretty strong though as it takes just 6.4 seconds for the 0-60 mph sprint while the quarter takes a hint over 15 seconds. Volvo has also limited the top speed to just 112 mph for improving safety in high-speed crashes. 

The maximum towing capacity of just 2,000 lbs is where the V60 lags behind against most of its competitors. The V60 Cross Country is more capable in dirt and snow conditions than its regular sibling and that hasn’t affected its ride and handling much. It glides over bumps and potholes rather well and the body roll around corners is very well tamed as well. The steering is well-weighted as well and the all-wheel-drive drivetrain smartly sends all its power just to the front wheels in normal circumstances but can send up to 50 percent of torque to the rear wheels when needed. 

Though the straight-line acceleration performance of the Volvo is pretty sweet in itself, it feels lackluster when compared to its peers. The Mercedes- Benz E450 Wagon boasts of a much larger six-cylinder engine and hence is the quickest one of the lot. That being said, Audi Allroad and the Subaru Outback too are much quicker and can tow much higher loads in spite of offering marginally greater engine output. 

The lower engine output might mean a higher fuel efficiency figure for some vehicles but that is not really the case with the V60 Cross Country. It is about average in the segment as it is rated for 25 mpg combined by the EPA. The 15.9-gallon fuel tank isn’t the largest which therefore limits the driving range to under 400 miles which translated to frequent gas station visits when on a long drive.

The larger six-cylinder engine under the hood of the Mercedes obviously has the highest fuel consumption in this comparison and hence also employs a much larger gas tank. Both the Subaru Outback and the Audi A4 Allroad return pretty similar fuel efficiency figures as one another which is marginally higher than the Volvo. The higher fuel tank capacity of the Subaru aids it in offering a much longer driving range as well.

The cabin of any Volvo is marvelous to look at and feels utmost premium to touch and feel and the V60 Cross Country is no exception to that. It is spacious, has a simple, clean, and sophisticated design, and utilizes premium quality materials all around for a refreshing ambiance inside the car. The tasteful use of wood inlays, leather, shiny plastics, and premium fabric, all work well with the interior of the V60. 

There is no shortage of space for all the five occupants in the V60 with the front row offering great legroom and enough seat adjustability and functionality to seat most average Americans rather comfortably. The rear seat is pretty good too for its class and although it’s not expansive, not many would complain about the back seat.

The luggage space behind the rear seat measures in at approximately 23 cu-ft which can further be extended to over 50 cu-ft by folding down the rear seat. This too isn’t the best in the segment but should be pretty handy for camping trips and long family holidays. The Interior cabin has decent storage pockets and cup holders but a few more would have made life easier for all its occupants when hauling the entire family. 

The 2022 Subaru Outback is a star in this regard as it not only has better headroom all around, it also offers much more legroom for the rear seats and almost 50 percent more cargo space than the Volvo. The Mercedes too offers a bit more space for its rear seat occupants but compromises a bit of legroom at the front. The cargo space in the E450 Wagon is second to the Subaru while the Audi offers marginally more space in the trunk than the V60. How intuitive is the 2022 Volvo V60 Cross Country Wagon’s infotainment unit?

Volvo has been known for its vertically integrated infotainment system and although the 12.3-inch Sensus Connect system is rather large and has attractive graphics, it suffers from occasional lag. Also, there is a learning curve to it and hence it isn’t the most intuitive system on the market today.

The Volvos of yesteryears were known for long boxy wagons that weren’t desirable by any means, and although the V60 wagon is still a long and kind boxy, it is very attractive and desirable to look at.

The “Thor’s Hammer” LED headlight design and the large front grille with the Volvo moniker at the center look aggressive and stylish. The ride height of the 2022 V60 Cross Country is also amongst the best in the business with the Subaru offering a marginally higher stance. The Mercedes on the contrary has a much lower hunkered down stance while the Audi A4 Allroad offers a decent amount of ground clearance. Both the wagons are very competitively priced against each other and although the Audi has a marginally higher engine output, it performs better both in terms of acceleration and towing prowess.

It also has marginally higher fuel efficiency and cargo space compared to the Volvo. Audi’s infotainment system is also just too good over the one in Volvo and the safety aspect is also well taken care of. Therefore, the Audi Allroad feels like the better option between the two.

2022 Volvo V60 Cross Country Wagon vs Mercedes-Benz E-Class Wagon E450 4MATIC

The Mercedes-Benz E450 wagon is a much larger station wagon than the V60 Cross Country and also costs a whopping $22,000 moreover it. For that much additional money, it features a larger and more powerful engine that returns superior acceleration and towing performance.

It is also not far behind in terms of fuel economy than the Volvo, and also offers a more spacious cabin with larger cargo capacity. The technology and safety features are also slicker to use in the Mercedes. Unless the price is a concern, the Mercedes feels like a holistically better wagon over the V60. 

2022 Volvo V60 Cross Country Wagon vs Subaru Outback XT

The Subaru Outback has created its own fan base due to its perfection in almost every aspect of a station wagon. To begin with, it isn’t as expensive as the luxury brands and yet offers great levels of comfort and technology. The acceleration and towing performance are pretty strong while the fuel economy is one of the best in the segment.

The cabin and cargo space is undoubtedly the best in the business and the high ride height gives it the edge in the mud, slush, and snow. If one can compromise on the premium element of the Volvo to save over 10 grand, there is no doubt that the Outback XT is a much better option. 

The new Volvo V60 Cross Country has perfected the premium station wagon to an extent that there is hardly any competition to it. The Mercedes is far pricier while the Subaru lacks the premium appeal. Although the Audi is a great alternative, the striking interior and exterior designs, great safety records and the extraordinary levels of dependability from Volvo are all unparalleled by a huge margin.
